Document Signed, oblong folio, March 2, 1928

1928. Rare UA Stock Certificate is "No. 9" dated March 2, 1928, issued for 1998 shares to Pickford-Faribanks Studios Company and signed by Robert Fairbanks, Jr., Mary Pickford Fairbanks, John Mott, Edwin Loeb as Secretary and one other. The stock certificate reads, "This Certifies that PICKFORD FAIRBANKS STUDIOS COMPANY is the owner of One Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety-Eight Shares of the Capital Stock of United Artists Studios Corporation..." The front of the certificate is signed by "R. Fairbanks" as President of United Artists Studio Corporation and "Edwin Loeb" as Secretary with "cancelled" penned across their signatures. "Cancelled" is also written at an angle in midsection of the certificate. Loeb was an attorney and cofounder of the International Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences which awards the Oscars. [The Academy dropped the International from its name at a later date.] The stub attached at left is signed, "R. Fairbanks, VP" as vice president of "Pickford- Fairbanks Studios Company." The following text shows on verso of the certificate: "For value received WE hereby sell, transfer and assign to MARY PICKFORD FAIRBANKS 999 SHARES AND DOUGLAS FAIRBANKS 999 SHARES..."  Signing for PICKFORD FAIRBANKS STUDIOS CO. are: "R Fairbanks," "Mary Pickford Fairbanks," "John G. Mott," and two others. The corporate seal shows through on the verso. The stamp on verso of the stub shows the hand written date of "3/2/28.". On February 14, 1922, Pickford-Fairbanks Studios Company filed articles of incorporation. Named as Directors were Douglas's brothers John Fairbanks and Robert Fairbanks, Mary's mother Charlotte Pickford Smith (died March 21, 1928), Mary's brother Jack Pickford, and Mary's attorney, John G. Mott. Three years earlier, February 5, 1919, United Artists was founded and incorporated as a joint venture on by D.W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. The four founders sought to avoid the control of the powerful commercial film studio and to protect their independence. They also created their own distributorships. The four who founded United Artists each held 20% of the company with the remaining 20% held by lawyer, William Gibbs McAdoo, son-in-law of Woodrow Wilson. As a cofounder as well as the producer and star of her own films, Canadian born Mary Pickford became the most powerful woman in Hollywood.

Autograph Letter, signed, to the literary agent, Major Pond, on Benêt's "John Brown's Body" and a possible lecture series under Pond's management

[New York], 1928. 4 pp., on stationery of "Hotel Le Marquis". 8vo. Two perforations in upper left corner, legibility unaffected. 4 pp., on stationery of "Hotel Le Marquis". 8vo. Benêt on John Brown: "I tried to do my best with him…". Fascinating letter, written soon after the publication of Benêt's most enduring poem, JOHN BROWN'S BODY (1928), to America's most eminent literary agent of the day, Major Pond. "Thank you very much indeed for your interesting letter. I am particularly glad that someone who was actually brought up in the John Brown atmosphere, as you were, would have been in any way satisfied with the reconstruction I attempted of the period -- and of the character of that most contradictory man. I tried to do my best with him -- but one never knows and your letter gave me great pleasure. "I have given a couple of readings from the poem to small audiences - and not under the management of any lecture bureau. And, if I were going to do that thing at all, it goes without saying that I would be much more interested in a proposition from yourself than from anyone else. But, to be perfectly frank, I am not going to do it at all unless I have to. I am not a good lecturer - my voice does not carry particularly - and while I enjoy reading my verse, it's pretty tiring to do it more than once in every so often. However I appreciate your thinking of me in this connection -- and, as I say, if it ever did seem advisable for me to do anything of the sort, I'd much rather do it under your management …".

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Innermost Asia, Detailed Report of Explorations in Central Asia, Kan-Su and Eastern Iran: carried out and described under the orders of H.M. Indian Government, Vol. I Text; Vol. II Text; Vol. III Plates and Plans

The Clarendon Press at Oxford 1928 - Extremely scarce in the trade (only one additional set of these three volumes available at this time). Under the orders of the Indian Government, Sir Marc Aurel Stein (November 26, 1868-October 26, 1943), K.C.I.E., Director of the Indian Archaeological Survey, assembled a major travel and exploration junket to and through Central Asia and Inner Mongolia from 1913 to 1916, being the third of four major episodes of reconnaissance. Stein was an amateur archaeologist, but a quite competent ethnologist, too, and geographer, linguist and surveyor. A four-volume account of his travels and their findings from this four-year study resulted, published in 1928 by the Clarendon Press, Oxford. Available here are the first three volumes. In addition to the texts he provided in the first two volumes, descriptive lists of antiques collected were provided by F.H. Andrews and F.M.G. Lorimer, with Appendices being provided a cadre of catalogers: J. Allan E. Benveniste, A.H. Francke, L. Giles, R.L. Hobson, T.A. Joyce, S. Konow, A. von Le Coq, W. Lentz, S. Levi, H. Maspero, F.E. Pargiter, R. Smith, W.J. Sollas, R.C. Spiller, F.W. Thomas, and V. Thomsen. Handsomely bound in brown cloth, with gilt stamped lettering to covers and spines, and with a lovely gilt illustration to the middle of each cover. Paste-downs are quite sturdy and unsoiled, the text blocks are clean and tight, with only slight (understandable) waviness to text. Previous owner's inscription, neatly rendered, to all three volumes at first free endpaper. Comprises well over 500 plates, most of which are remarkable for their clarity and distinctness. The much-sought-after Atlas volume (Volume IV) comprises 52 maps, not present here. Volume I is xxxix + 547 pp. in length. The volume shows moderate wear to covers, some darkening and dust-soiling to fore-edge, bumping to three tips and a scuffing to rear bottom tip, also seemingly stained by coffee, affecting the tips to the final 20 or so pages, not even remotely affecting text. Volume II is sharp and handsome, in length, xii + 569-1159 pp. Volume III, comprising "Plates and Plans," is xi + ~505 pages of plates, unpaginated. Bumping to spine heads and feet, but minimally so. Overall, an attractive, handsomely produced, tightly bound, tank-like set of three volumes of a monumental work of archaeology, architecture, photography, travel and documentation. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
