Innermost Asia, Detailed Report of Explorations in Central Asia, Kan-Su and Eastern Iran: carried out and described under the orders of H.M. Indian Government, Vol. I Text; Vol. II Text; Vol. III Plates and Plans

Oxford, England: The Clarendon Press at Oxford, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Extremely scarce in the trade (only one additional set of these three volumes available at this time). Under the orders of the Indian Government, Sir Marc Aurel Stein (November 26, 1868-October 26, 1943), K.C.I.E., Director of the Indian Archaeological Survey, assembled a major travel and exploration junket to and through Central Asia and Inner Mongolia from 1913 to 1916, being the third of four major episodes of reconnaissance. Stein was an amateur archaeologist, but a quite competent ethnologist, too, and geographer, linguist and surveyor. A four-volume account of his travels and their findings from this four-year study resulted, published in 1928 by the Clarendon Press, Oxford. Available here are the first three volumes. In addition to the texts he provided in the first two volumes, descriptive lists of antiques collected were provided by F.H. Andrews and F.M.G. Lorimer, with Appendices being provided a cadre of catalogers: J. Allan E. Benveniste, A.H. Francke, L. Giles, R.L. Hobson, T.A. Joyce, S. Konow, A. von Le Coq, W. Lentz, S. Levi, H. Maspero, F.E. Pargiter, R. Smith, W.J. Sollas, R.C. Spiller, F.W. Thomas, and V. Thomsen. Handsomely bound in brown cloth, with gilt stamped lettering to covers and spines, and with a lovely gilt illustration to the middle of each cover. Paste-downs are quite sturdy and unsoiled, the text blocks are clean and tight, with only slight (understandable) waviness to text. Previous owner's inscription, neatly rendered, to all three volumes at first free endpaper. Comprises well over 500 plates, most of which are remarkable for their clarity and distinctness. The much-sought-after Atlas volume (Volume IV) comprises 52 maps, not present here. Volume I is xxxix + 547 pp. in length. The volume shows moderate wear to covers, some darkening and dust-soiling to fore-edge, bumping to three tips and a scuffing to rear bottom tip, also seemingly stained by coffee, affecting the tips to the final 20 or so pages, not even remotely affecting text. Volume II is sharp and handsome, in length, xii + 569-1159 pp. Volume III, comprising "Plates and Plans," is xi + ~505 pages of plates, unpaginated. Bumping to spine heads and feet, but minimally so. Overall, an attractive, handsomely produced, tightly bound, tank-like set of three volumes of a monumental work of archaeology, architecture, photography, travel and documentation. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

Moscow: Zemlya i Fabrika, 1928. 324, [2] pp. 21x15 cm. In original illustrated oversized wrappers. Small tears of the wrappers, Soviet bookshop stamp on the back cover. 1 of 6000 copies. First translation. Cover design by P. Miturich. Pyotr Vasilievich Miturich (1887-1956), Russian artist. In 1910-1920 was close with such artists like Tatlin, Punin, Bruni, futurists and poet Velimir Khlebnikov (was married to his sister artist Vera Khlebnikova). John Reed is best remembered for his first-hand account of the Bolshevik Revolution, Ten Days That Shook the World - much loved by Lenin and consequently by Soviet people. Reed died in Russia in 1920, and was buried at the Kremlin Wall Necropolis, one of only two Americans to have been given this honor in Russia, the other being labor organizer Bill Haywood. The book developed from his experience, he has traveled the spring of 1905 as a war correspondent for Russia and the Balkans. Traveling to Russia, Reed was outraged to learn that the ambassador in Petrograd was inclined to believe they were spies. Reed and Robinson were re-arrested when they tried to slip into Romania. This time it was the British ambassador (Robinson being a British subject) who finally secured permission for them to leave, but not before all their papers were seized in Kiev. In Bucharest the duo spent time piecing together their journey, with Reed at one point traveling to Constantinople in hopes of seeing action at Gallipoli. These experiences led to Reed's book, The War in Eastern Europe, published in April 1916.

1928. Zus. 6½ SS. auf 5 Bll. Gr.-4to. Mit ms. adr. Kuverts.

Shanghai of Today. A Souvenir Album of Fifty Vandyck Prints of "The Model Settlement"....

Shanghai. Kelly & Walsh. 1928. 15pp + 50 striking tipped in plates on an individual leaf each with decorative border and printed caption on opposite leaf. Black and white plate on upper cover. Original paper covered limp boards marked and worn with loss particularly at corners, plain modern cloth spine, Japanese paper repairs on joints. From the library of Arthur Hacker, Hong Kong author, artist, historian and collector with a neat pencilled underneath each image. Although the binding is worn and damaged the contents of this copy are very good and clean. 31 X 25cm. The eight page introduction by O.M. Green, editor of the North China Daily News, offers a very interesting picture of the city of Shanghai in the late 1920s. O.M. Green's opinions are interesting and no doubt reflect the thoughts of many others at the time. Certain of the great benefit and superiority of Western ways and Westerner governance he gives only limited recognition to the contribution of the local Chinese people. His text is accompanied by the 50 views which of course are the heart of this book. These striking views of Shanghai through a soft lens include a great many street scenes showing the local inhabitants going about their daily business with the grand buildings of Shanghai featuring in the background. Heft, 1928). 21x15 cm. 99-138 pp. Plain quarter cloth with marbled boards, paper label on front board with ''54'' printed and an ''A'' in handwriting. With the library stamp of Magnus Hirschfeld-Stiftung on front paste-down, front wrapper and first text page. With the title in handwriting on the first text page. The boards are slightly bowed. Contents are a bit toned in margins. A well-preserved copy. Max Alsberg (1877-1933), German jurist from a Jewish merchant family and one of the most famous criminal defense lawyers of the Weimar Republic. He describes in this work a case where a man is wrongly convicted as the court fails to expose an unreliable witness, and urges that forensic psychiatrist should be consulted at trials on a regular basis. One of few surviving books from the library of the Magnus Hirschfeld-Stiftung, which was seized and, to a great extent, burned by the Nazi regime. Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935), Jewish German physician and sexologist. He was a co-founder of the Wissenschaftlich-humanitäre Komitee in 1897, an organisation which implemented ''the first advocacy for homosexual and transgender rights'' (Goltz: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Movements, 2008), and started the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft in Berlin in 1919. The institute gained world-wide reputation for its providing of medical consultations and its educational activities concerning sexuality. The library, from which the offered book is derived, housed at the institute consisted of around 40 000 volumes. They were all seized or burned in 1933, as the Nazi regime started persecuting perceived sexual deviants. Later that same year, an auction was arranged where approximately 8000 volumes from the institute's library were sold (cf. Dose & Herrn: Verloren 1933: Bibliothek und Archiv des Instituts für Sexualwissenschaft in Berlin, Frankfurt 2006). The whereabouts of these supposedly survived copies are unknown, in any case books from the institute's library are extremely scarce.
