The Well Of Loneliness (First UK Printing)

The First UK printing published by Jonathan Cape in 1928 with an 'Appreciation by Havelock Ellis'. True first state with typographical error on page 50 ('whip' instead of 'whips'). The BOOK is in Very Good+ condition. Pushing to spine tips. Gilt titling remains bright as does the black top-stain. A hint of discolouration to one tiny area of cloth on the spine and a single minuscular stain to the upper board. Mild offsetting to end papers with light spotting to the prelims and in a few other places. The scarce paper WRAPPER is in Very Good+ condition. Moderate edge-wear with loss - see images. This loss is more pronounced to the spine ends and corners. The wrapper remains very presentable in the removable Brodart archival protector. Professional Japanese tissue paper repairs to the verso of the wrapper. This famous and highly controversial lesbian novel became the target of a campaign by the editor of the Sunday Express newspaper, who believed it to be morally toxic. The novel went through two small printings in Britain before being suppressed. In the same year there was a continental printing in English, from the more liberal Parisian publishers, Pegasus Press. For decades The Well of Loneliness was the best-known lesbian novel in English. One opponent of the book declared ,'I would rather give a healthy boy or a healthy girl a phial of prussic acid than this novel. Poison kills the body, but moral poison kills the soul. 'By the end of the year the book had been judged 'obscene' and all copies for sale were ordered to be destroyed by British authorities. This is one of the few copies that survived -- the very first issue before a minor textual error was corrected. Very scarce in the original wrapper. Collectible. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

        THE CHILDERMASS (SECTION1)

Chatto and Windus, London 1928 - Chatto and Windus, London, 1928 First Edition. Octavo. Original yellow cloth boards with red trim, lettered to spine in red. Top edge stained yellow, lower edge untrimmed. Minor rubbing to lower edge, otherwise a fine copy in a fine dust jacket with the same red trim, with one or two tiny spots on the upper panel. A superb example and a rare survivor in this state. With the publisher's prospectus for 'The Childermass' and another advertising leaflet loosely inserted, the former with scattered foxing. 'The Childermass' was first published in two editions: a special limited edition of 225 copies and an ordinary edition of 2500 copies of which 1000 were destroyed by the publisher. Fine copies of the ordinary edition seem to be the more scarce. Lewis intended to publish 'The Childermass' in three sections, with sections 2 and 3 following soon after the publication of the first. However, the series wasn't completed until the mid 1950s and titled collectively "The Human Age". [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

[IN THE HEART OF CONSTRUCTIVISM] Ezhegodnik MAO. #5. (Yubileinyi vypusk) [i.e. Yearbook of Moscow Architecture Society. #5. Anniversary Issue]

Moscow: Izd-vo Moskovskogo Arkhitekturnogo Obshchestva, 1928. VIII, 135, [6] pp.: ills., photographs, plans. 33х26 cm. In original wrappers and illustrated dust-wrapper. Very good. Front cover not attached to the text block and the spine, tiny tears of the top and bottom of the spine, spots, tears and losses of the dust-wrapper. Rare. One of 2000 copies. With advertisement slip by Victor Kokorin (Moscow, [1927]. 4 pp. 24,5х17 cm. Near fine, restored tear of the spine). Both the dust-wrapper and the slip are of constructivist style. Title page, table of contents, introduction, captions and authors' names in Russian and German. Dust-wrapper designed by Nikolai Kolli. Bilingual feature of this edition considered as an evidence of international nature of architecture and the bold creative experiments that would be interesting not only in USSR but abroad. Among presented in this edition are design projects by architects Vesnin brothers, Shchusev, Ivanitsky, Zholtovsky, Kokorin, Barkhin, Razov, Golosov, Chernyshev, Voinov, Fridman, and others. Moscow Architecture Society was founded in 1867 and was the first Russian professional union of architects and constructing engineers. They studied architecture, organized exhibitions and competitions. They first began to hold open architecture design competitions in 1868, and in 1920s these competitions played an important part in creating an advantageous atmosphere for architectural designing and for developing of avant-garde. Interesting that during the forming years (1920s) there was a small number of architects. But even this small group wasn't occupied with real projects (constructing was rare during Civil war and for some time after it). So 1920s became the era of architectural designing and pre-projecting. As a result a small group of architects formed a creative reserve, unrealized heritage, which held large shaping potential. In the late 1920s state constructing started to bring some of those projects to life but many of them were considered too avant-garde. In the beginning of the 20th century Moscow architectural look was rapidly changing, and MAO Yearbooks are a great evidence of that metamorphosis. Even though it's called 'yearbook' there were only 6 such editions with first printed in 1909. This is an anniversary issue (60 years of the society) and the first in 10 years a public printed material with information on the society's activities and architectural competitions, results of the art process and construction. WorldCat locates 6 copies in US libraries (Princeton, Art Institute of Chicago, Harvard, Getty, Arizona State University, Columbia).

        The House At Pooh Corner

Published by Methuen & co. London, 1928. 8vo. This is a lovely example of the children's classic by A. A. Milne. Bound in it's original salmon pink boards, with gold gilt detailing. This first edition is in Near Fine condition, with unmarked, pictorial endpapers, tightly bound leaves and beautifully bright and clean pages. There is a gift inscription to the title page, and the odd spot due to age on just a couple of pages. The spine ends and board corners are very slightly bumped and there is some fading to the spine due to sun exposure. This excellent example is housed in a Near Fine dustjacket. The jacket retains its colour and is clean and bright, with just a couple of minute marks to the rear panel and some mild rubbing around the corners and where the jacket wraps around. There is some slight wear to the edges, predominantly at the spine ends with a couple of very small tears, no more than half a centimetre in length at most. In all, this is an exceptional copy of this children's classic and is a rare find indeed in this lovely condition!

Autograph Letter, signed. to Eddie Wasserman. Undated ("At Home Sunday"). Postmarked April 23,1928

[New York?], 1928. Near Fine. Original mailing envelope present. One page on note-sized paper. 23cm. 64 words. Larsen signed this letter as Nella Larsen Imes, her married name at the time this letter was written. She writes, in part: "Many thanks for your very perceptive review. I do like it. Incidentally, I think that perhaps you have missed your calling. So few reviewers really seem able to get at the real heart of a book as you do." The review was probably of "Quicksand" her first novel which was published in 1928. We originally sold this letter many years ago to Richard Newman, the good-hearted Scholar of African American studies, when he was working at the New York Public Library. Autograph material relating to Larsen is extremely uncommon. After "Passing," her second novel in 1929, and a short story or two, Larsen stopped writing, withdrew from the literary circle and from Harlem.

[CZECH AVANT-GARDE] S lodí jež dovážÃ čaj a kávu [i.e. With the Boat that Imports Tea and Coffee. Poetry. 1926-1927]

Prague: Odeon, 1928. 63, [4] pp.: ill. 19x13,1 cm. In later binding. Near fine, clean and sound copy. Without original wrappers. Signed by the author postcard with author's photograph laid in. Legendary work containing Karel Teige's full page typography and colored typographical design experiments. The second, but first illustrated edition. With 5 full-page, including the title page, and 6 smaller functionalist typographical compositions by Teige, printed in rose and black on cream stock. Teige's compositions, created from geometric shapes, typographical symbols, and letters, do not harmonize with the character of the poems; rather they stand as a parallel, individual, and independent expression. Together with Biebl's 'Zlom', an outstanding example of Teige's concept of constructivist typography, in the colophon rightfully described as 'typographical montage'. Konstantin Biebl (1898-1951) was a Czech poet. In 1926-1927 he accomplished his voyage to Ceylon, Sumatra and Java where he learned about European settlers in the area and colonial practices towards the locals. The voyage inspired Biebl to write a well-known collection of poems and several short stories, and he returned to the topic in most of his following works. Karel Teige (1900-1951) was a Czech modernist avant-garde artist, art critic, editor of the avant-garde journals and miscellanies. He was leading figure of the Czech avant-garde in-betweens wars. From 1923 he insisted on the integration of painting and poetry, from which emerged a new poetic genre of picture-poem. Following the program of Russian constructivists and supporters of production art, he declared the end of arts and abandonment of traditional art techniques. He was particularly interested in the books and journals' design and usage of photomontage, posters and abstract typographical compositions executed in the spirit of Czech constructivism.

        COSTUMES BY EROS

1928 - AIKEN, Conrad. COSTUMES BY EROS. NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1928. Small 8vo., blue cloth in dust jacket; 266 pages. First Edition. A collection of 14 short stories, each dealing with the emotion typified by the Greek God Eros. Signed presentation from Aiken (using his initials) on the front endpaper: "M.F. from CA. Coals to Newcastle back again 1928." [See scan]. I believe this book was presented to Maurice Firuski, who owned the Dunster House Bookshop in Cambridge, Massachusetts and was a friend of Aiken. In 1927 he started "The Housatonuc" bookstore in Salisbury, Connecticut specializing in rare and antiquarian books. The move may have inspired the presentation- "Coals to Newcastle" is a British idiom for a foolhardy or pointless action. Laid in is a copy of an e-mail from Aiken's grand daughter Lizza Aiken, who is the daughter of Joan Aiken. In the letter Aiken confirms the handwriting is that of her grandfather and that the "joke" in the presentation "is typical, so I think I can fairly confidently say that I think it is his signature, in slightly grandiose mood." With a small promotional four-page leaflet promoting the Jonathan Cape English edition of this title laid in. Very Good (contents clean & tight); minor wear (some moderate browning & two small interior tape repairs, price-clipped) d/j. $875.00. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Jeu de massacre. 12 personnages à la recherche d'une (balle)

Editions Socialistes 1928 - EDITION ORIGINALE D'UNE GRANDE RARETE ET D'UNE FRAICHEUR EXCEPTIONNELLE. Jeu de massacre. 12 personnages à la recherche d'une [balle]. Les Editions Socialistes. 1928. FAIRY GARLAND

      - (DULAC,EDMUND)illus. A FAIRY GARLAND being fairy tales from the Old French. Lond: Cassell (1928). Large 4to, vellum backed blue cloth, small snag at base of spine and slight bit of foxing else fine. LIMITED TO 1000 LARGE PAPER NUMBERED COPIES SIGNED BY DULAC. Old French fairy tales by Perrault, D'Aulnoy and Count Hamilton are illustrated by Dulac with 12 beautiful color plates. Laid in is an interesting ONE PAGE HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM DULAC written to the editor of the Daily Graphic. Dulac was obviously upset that the public's right to hear all music was being modified. His letter expresses his outrage and certainly is a window into his personality: " I wonder sometimes what the world would do without the help of the men "who know what the public want"! . their concern for the intellectual aesthetic welfare of others is paramount, their hardiness can only be compared to that of the methusalesque tortoise, their only weakness is that they do not always know "what the public what" - and which I understand, is taken into account in Mr. de Lara's scheme - is to be trated like a lot of undeveloped children, and be administered music like a medicine in graduated doses. Discussions of the relative merits of Parsifal and Maritana are futile, and it is precisely in avoiding these absurd restrictions of the use of certain types of music to certain classes of people, that Mr. de Lara's scheme is valuable. Maritana was not composed for the "uneducated" nor Parsifal for the "highbrows." What the public wants is the opportunity for the largest possible number to hear the largest possible number of operas. All premature expressions of opinion as to what should or should not be given them is preposterous. Yours faithfully Edmund Dulac." [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
