        Sun Also Rises (German)

1928 - HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Fiesta [The Sun Also Rises]. Berlin: Ernst Rowohlt, 1928. Octavo, original blue cloth, original dust jacket. $20,000.First edition in German, Hemingway's own copy with his ownership signature on the front free endpaper, presentation copy additionally inscribed and signed by him on the title page, "For Frazer [sic] Bragg Drew wishing him good luck always, Ernest Hemingway. It's hard to keep books in decent condition in a country where they have hurricanes. These books are all survivors." As a young teacher, Drew wrote a letter to which Hemingway responded with uncharacteristic kindness, signing six of Drew's books and presenting him with six more "as an act of contrition" for taking so long to return the books. Hemingway then invited Drew to visit, and on April 8, 1955, one year after Hemingway won the Nobel Prize, they spent a long afternoon discussing literature, later recounted by Drew in his article "Unedited Notes on a Visit to Finca Vigia" (in Bruccoli, Conversations With Ernest Hemingway, 89-98). At the end of Drew's visit Hemingway said "Let's go up to the house and sign those books of yours." Hemingway inscribed all the books Drew had brought with him and presented him with many others from his own collection; this volume was undoubtedly one of the books presented and inscribed by Hemingway that day. The Sun Also Rises first published in English in 1926. Grissom, 698. Bookplate of Fraser Drew. Publisher's postcard laid in.Scattered light foxing to text; scarce original dust jacket with mild toning to spine and extremities, only minor shallow chipping to spine ends. An extremely good copy with a wonderful Hemingway inscription. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

1928 - SASSOON, Siegfried. Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man. WITH: Memoirs Of An Infantry Officer. WITH: Sherston's Progress. London: Faber & Gwyer; Faber & Faber, 1928, 1930, (1936). Three volumes. Octavo, modern full black morocco, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Housed in a custom felt-lined slipcase. $2200.First trade editions of Sassoon's fictionalized autobiographical trilogy, handsomely and uniformly bound.Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man, Sassoon's first prose work, inaugurated his fictionalized autobiographical trilogy by winning two of England's most coveted literary awards, the 1928 Hawthornden Prize and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. It was followed by Memoirs of an Infantry Officer and Sherston's Progress, the latter reflecting one of his pennames. Sassoon's trilogy earned high praise for "precise and yet passionate" insight into the terrible cost of war and his evocative portrayal of "English society, politics and literature" (New York Times). This first trade edition was published anonymously and precedes the signed limited edition that followed later that same year, bearing Sassoon's name. The latter two volumes were issued simultaneously with the signed limited issues. Keynes A30b; A33b; A40b. Fine condition, a handsome set. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

, 1928. 1928. AIKEN, Conrad. COSTUMES BY EROS. NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1928. Small 8vo., blue cloth in dust jacket; 266 pages. First Edition. A collection of 14 short stories, each dealing with the emotion typified by the Greek God Eros. Signed presentation from Aiken (using his initials) on the front endpaper: "M.F. from CA. Coals to Newcastle back again 1928." [See scan]. I believe this book was presented to Maurice Firuski, who owned the Dunster House Bookshop in Cambridge, Massachusetts and was a friend of Aiken. In 1927 he started "The Housatonuc" bookstore in Salisbury, Connecticut specializing in rare and antiquarian books. The move may have inspired the presentation- "Coals to Newcastle" is a British idiom for a foolhardy or pointless action. Laid in is a copy of an e-mail from Aiken's grand daughter Lizza Aiken, who is the daughter of Joan Aiken. In the letter Aiken confirms the handwriting is that of her grandfather and that the "joke" in the presentation "is typical, so I think I can fairly confidently say that I think it is his signature, in slightly grandiose mood." With a small promotional four-page leaflet promoting the Jonathan Cape English edition of this title laid in. Very Good (contents clean & tight); minor wear (some moderate browning & two small interior tape repairs, price-clipped) d/j. $875.00.

        Oriental Collection

1928 - BROWN, G.M.L. Oriental Collection. New York: Foliophiles, 1928. Folio, 24 folders with descriptive text containing 39 leaves (1 scroll leaf in separate box), housed in original cloth box. $11,000.First edition of this classic Foliophiles leaf book, number 1 of only 45 copies, with 39 individual leaves from the 12th to the 19th centuries, representing all the major Asian writing systems."In its usual form, a leaf book contains an original leaf from a significant manuscript or printed book, accompanied by an essay written by a knowledgeable, or at least prominent, author". Although many private collectors tipped in leaves from other books as part of the process of 'extra-illustration,' these individually created books are not considered to be leaf books. Standard sources on book collecting and leaf books trace the true beginning of the genre to 1865, with the publication of Francis Fry's A Description of the Great Bible". [which] included 14 original leaves, which were taken from incomplete or defective 16th- and 17th-century English Bibles. Fry, a businessman who spent much of his later life collecting and studying Bibles, believed, as he wrote in his introduction, that 'no description is equal to an actual leaf.' Reading about a book can be educational and rewarding, but seeing and handling the book""whether the complete object, or a single leaf extracted from it""is a completely different, and potentially much richer, experience. A belief in the power of the original object has been one of the main motivations for the production of leaf books ever since". The book collecting boom of the 1920s brought with it significantly increased production of leaf books of all kinds". Organizations such as the Society of Foliophiles created and marketed several different portfolios of leaves, including Specimens of Oriental Mss. and Printing (1928)" (Silver). In his brief introduction, Brown notes: "The Oriental manuscripts and printed books represented in this portfolio are fairly representative of the progress of the art of writing, and to a lesser degree of printing, throughout Asia. In my comments attached to these examples there has been an attempt to describe the development of the various languages represented." The collection consists of 24 folders and 1 box, containing a total of 39 individual leaves: 1.Nestorian Syriac manuscript (16th-century book of prayers, worming to margins) and printed leaf from a New Testament in Syriac (1843). 2.Armenian manuscript (catechism and book of prayers, 1741) and printed leaf from an Armenian book of rituals (1831). 3.Arabic manuscript in Cufic characters (12th-century Koran). 4.Arabic manuscript (15th-century book of devotions) and modern Arabic manuscript (Koran). 5.Arabic manuscript (17th-century Koran, probably Egyptian, light worming to margins) and printed leaf from an Arabic book (1833 work of French authorship on health and hygiene).6.Arabic manuscript written in Persia (early 19th-century suras). 7.Turkish manuscript (late 18th-century book of travels with miniature view of Mecca on verso) and printed leaf from a Turkish dictionary (1841). 8.Persian manuscript (biographies of noted Sufis, 1478, worming and edge restoration). 9.Persian manuscript (the Gulistan of Sa'di, 1563) and printed leaf from a Persian textbook (1827). 10.Persian manuscript (the Shahnama of Firdausi, 17th century) and Persian manuscript (the Kamsah of Nizami, 17th century). 11.Persian manuscript with miniature (1520, edge restoration). 12.Kashmir manuscript in Persian (1848). 13.Sanskrit manuscript (end of 18th century) and printed leaf from a New Testament in Sanskrit (1844). 14.Sanskrit manuscript (18th-century puranas) and illuminated Sanskrit manuscript (early 19th-century Mahabarata). 15.Rajput miniature painting (early 19th-century Mahabarata). 16.Hindi manuscript (the Chronicles of Rajputana, 1839) and printed leaf from Sakuntala in Hindi (1876). 17.Tibetan Buddist manuscript (1662-1722; scroll manuscript in [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Shanghai of Today. A Souvenir Album of Fifty Vandyck Prints of "The Model Settlement".

Shanghai.: Kelly & Walsh.. Second Edition enlarged.. 1928.. 15pp + 50 striking tipped in plates on an individual leaf each with decorative border and printed caption on opposite leaf. Black and white plate on upper cover. Original paper covered limp boards marked and worn with loss particularly at corners, plain modern cloth spine, Japanese paper repairs on joints. From the library of Arthur Hacker, Hong Kong author, artist, historian and collector with a neat pencilled underneath each image. Although the binding is worn and damaged the contents of this copy are very good and clean. 31 X 25cm. The eight page introduction by O.M. Green, editor of the North China Daily News, offers a very interesting picture of the city of Shanghai in the late 1920s. O.M. Green's opinions are interesting and no doubt reflect the thoughts of many others at the time. Certain of the great benefit and superiority of Western ways and Westerner governance he gives only limited recognition to the contribution of the local Chinese people. His text is accompanied by the 50 views which of course are the heart of this book. These striking views of Shanghai through a soft lens include a great many street scenes showing the local inhabitants going about their daily business with the grand buildings of Shanghai featuring in the background. .

Harrap & Co., [1928].Limited to 250 numbered copies for England (this copy being No. 102) and 125 copies for the United States, signed by Arthur Rackham. Minimal foxing to preliminary leaves.Publisher's vellum over boards, front cover and spine decoratively stamped in gilt, color pictorial end-papers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Corners very slightly bumped, engraved bookplate on front paste-down. A near fine copy. Housed in a later gray cloth slipcase.By 1928, the traditional Rackham book - freely and lavishly illustrated, and lushly produced - was, culturally no longer in fashion nor financially feasible. Artistically, Rackham's work was being overshadowed by a younger generation. Publisher George Harrap stepped in, took up the challenge, and, through production economies, published a new kind of Rackham book. But if the volumes were not as spectacular as in the past, the artwork was no less impressive.Latimore and Haskell, pp. 63-64. Riall, pp. 164-165.

Map Showing the Overland and Overseas Flights of Charles A. Lindbergh Colonel and Flight Comdr. 110th Observation Sqdn. Missouri Nat. Guard.

John Day Company. New York. 1928. - Very large color pictorial map, 26 1/4 x 45 1/2 inches on sheet 29 x 48 1/2 inches, folded as issued, now mounted on linen. The map has been professionally restored, with three vertical folds and one horizontal fold all showing evident signs of restoration from heavy wear along folds and paper loss in three places in the margin. Color vignette images such as of the flagship of Ferdinand Magellan, Columbus' Santa Maria, and the "U.S. Cruiser Memphis Bringing Capt. Lindbergh Home" enliven the seas. An elaborate cartouche at lower left contains a portrait of Lindbergh and four of his medals.

Colorful Original Signed Design for a Dress and Jacket

      - Striking original large-format jacket and dress design in the hand of the French fashion designer regarded as one of the greatest names in fashion history. Acccomplished in pencil and color inks and signed "Yves Saint Laurent" lower left in bold black ink. Approx 19 x 23 inches, archivally framed to slightly larger. A very rare authentic example, seldom encountered on the market and with extraordinary provenance. From the collection of June Weir-Baron (1928 - 2015), Fashion Historian and Journalist, the first woman Vice President at Fairchild Publications, a major force in her capacity as Fashion Editor and Assistant publisher of Women's Wear Daily and W, as an influential editor at Vogue, Executive Fashion Editor at Harper's Bazaar, deputy Style Editor for The New York Times Sunday Magazine and Contributing Editor at Mirabella. The design is ca. 1985, the year in which Caroline Rennolds Milbank wrote, "The most consistently celebrated and influential designer of the past twenty-five years, Yves Saint Laurent can be credited with both spurring the couture's rise from its sixties ashes and with finally rendering ready-to-wear reputable."

Mott. Three years earlier, February 5, 1919, United Artists was founded and incorporated as a joint venture on by D.W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. The four founders sought to avoid the control of the powerful commercial film studio and to protect their independence. They also created their own distributorships. The four who founded United Artists each held 20% of the company with the remaining 20% held by lawyer, William Gibbs McAdoo, son-in-law of Woodrow Wilson. As a cofounder as well as the producer and star of her own films, Canadian born Mary Pickford became the most powerful woman in Hollywood. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Autograph Letter, signed, to the literary agent, Major Pond, on Benêt's "John Brown's Body" and a possible lecture series under Pond's management

[New York], 1928. 4 pp., on stationery of "Hotel Le Marquis". 8vo. Two perforations in upper left corner, legibility unaffected. 4 pp., on stationery of "Hotel Le Marquis". 8vo. Benêt on John Brown: "I tried to do my best with him…". Fascinating letter, written soon after the publication of Benêt's most enduring poem, JOHN BROWN'S BODY (1928), to America's most eminent literary agent of the day, Major Pond. "Thank you very much indeed for your interesting letter. I am particularly glad that someone who was actually brought up in the John Brown atmosphere, as you were, would have been in any way satisfied with the reconstruction I attempted of the period -- and of the character of that most contradictory man. I tried to do my best with him -- but one never knows and your letter gave me great pleasure. "I have given a couple of readings from the poem to small audiences - and not under the management of any lecture bureau. And, if I were going to do that thing at all, it goes without saying that I would be much more interested in a proposition from yourself than from anyone else. But, to be perfectly frank, I am not going to do it at all unless I have to. I am not a good lecturer - my voice does not carry particularly - and while I enjoy reading my verse, it's pretty tiring to do it more than once in every so often. However I appreciate your thinking of me in this connection -- and, as I say, if it ever did seem advisable for me to do anything of the sort, I'd much rather do it under your management …".
