        The Tower.

First Edition. 8. 110 pages. Hardcover. Original, beautifully illustrated cloth with gilt lettering and ornaments after a design by Sturge Moore. Excellent condition with some wear and rubbing to the binding. Interior excellent and clean ! No annotations or former name entries. Very clean example of this rare books. [Wade 158] Thoor Ballylee Castle (Irish Túr Bhaile Uí Laí) is a fortified, 15th (or 16th) century Hiberno-Norman tower house built by the septs de Burgo, or Burke, near the town of Gort in County Galway, Ireland. It is also known as Yeats' Tower because it was once owned and inhabited by the poet William Butler Yeats. (Wikipedia) The Tower was a book of poems by W. B. Yeats, published in 1928. The Tower was Yeats's first major collection as Nobel Laureate after receiving the Nobel Prize in 1923. It is considered to be one of the poet's most influential volumes and was well received by the public. The title, which the book shares with the second poem, refers to Ballylee Castle, a Norman tower which Yeats purchased and restored in 1917. Yeats Gaelicized the name to Thoor Ballyllee, and it has retained the title to this day. Yeats often summered at Thoor Ballylee with his family until 1928. The book includes several of Yeats' most famous poems, including "Sailing to Byzantium," "Leda and the Swan," and "Among School Children." All of the poems included in The Tower had previously appeared elsewhere in print collections and periodicals. Many of the poems featured in Seven Poems and a Fragment, The Cat and the Moon and Certain Poems, and October Blast released by Cuala Press. Other poems had been collected in A Vision. Yeats commissioned Thomas Sturge Moore to create the cover for the volume in 1927. The gold wood-cut style image depicts Thoor Ballylee and its reflection in waters below the tower all on a light green background. The poet praised Moore's artwork, noting that the cover was both a true representation of Thoor Ballylee and a successful symbolic design for the collection. Moore's work on The Tower and other collections solidified Yeats's modern image in both American and English print editions. Many of the poems in The Tower demonstrate Yeats's disillusionment with the limitations of the physical world and his withdrawal from ordinary life. The poet seeks to transcend the conflicts between the dichotomies of mind/body and thought/action by allowing poetry to exist in the world of vision rather than the world of reality. (Wikipedia)

Collection of Plays published by Victor Gollancz.

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd., 1928-44 - 265 volumes (110 titles), octavo. Original cloth (with dust jackets unless stated) or wrappers, many wraparound bands. Generally excellent condition, having been stored in the publisher's file copy archive since their publication - most copies stamped "File Copy" or marked by hand as such. An extraordinarily comprehensive collection of first editions of plays and theatrical anthologies printed by British publishing titan Victor Gollancz (founded 1927) from 1928 to 1944. This entire collection (with the exception of two titles brought in to supplement a gap) derives from the publisher's own file copy archive, which accounts for the exceptional condition and completeness of this Gollancz theatrical library, presenting many valuable first editions (a fine first of R. C. Sherriff's Journey's End being a notable example), and many play texts that are hard to find. The collection comprises a complete run of the Famous Plays series (1929-1937), which superbly encapsulates the stage culture of the 1930s London, as well as a hugely comprehensive selection of the Gollancz plays published singly in slim volumes with grey dust jackets, and a number of the signature yellow-jacketed Gollancz publications also containing plays (as well as musical and ballet texts). The vast majority of these plays were performed in London theatres in the 1920s, 30s and 40s, as attested by the numerous wraparound bands (rare survivals in themselves) advertising their "now being performed at" the likes of The Globe, The Savoy, The Duke of York, The Criteron, etc. A complete list of the titles follows - all "1st"s are first impressions unless otherwise stated, all hardbacks have jackets unless otherwise stated. Many of the titles are present in both hard and soft variants and with duplicates: John van Druten, The Return of the Soldier, 1928 [1st wrappers] John van Druten, Young Woodley, 1928 [1st hardback, 3rd impression wrappers] Ashely Dukes, Such Men are Dangerous, 1928 [1st hardback x 2, 1st wrappers x 2] Ashley Dukes, The Fountain-Head, 1928 [1st hardback, 1st wrappers x 2] Monckton Hoffe, Many Waters, 1928 [1st hardback, 1st wrappers] Miles Malleson, Four People, 1928 [1st hardback, 2nd impression hardback, 1st wrappers, 2nd impression wrappers] Benn W.       In 8, cm 20 x 16, pp. 110. Brossura editoriale con sovraccoperta. Edizione originale rara.

Ralph and the Train Wreckers / Or the Secret of the Blue Freight Cars (IN ORIGINAL DUST JACKET)

Grosset & Dunlap, New York 1928 - Original printing of the hard-to-find final installment in the "Ralph and the Railroad" boys' adventure series, in original dust jacket. Glossy frontispiece on coated stock. Modest rub to corners. Catalog at rear lists through "Tom Swift and His Airline Express" (1926) and "Don Sturdy Among the Gorillas" (1927.) But verso of jacket (G&D still listed most of their juvenile titles to jacket verso, at this point) offers Tom Swift through "Talking Pictures" (1928), five Ted Scotts through "Search for the Lost Flyers" (1928), X Bar X Boys through "Nugget Camp" (1928), and one additional Don Sturdy (for a total of eight), through "Captured by Head Hunters" (1928.) Small brown stains in margin where frontispiece meets title page -- did someone once apply some non-archival glue or tape? Dust jacket missing top half inch of spine (the word "Ralph" is lost, there) and there's a 1/4-by-1/2-inch hole to rear panel near spine, as well as other closed tears and smaller chips to corners. Some small pieces of archival clear plastic tape have also been applied to verso -- jacket "good only." 248 pp. plus 4 pp. publisher's catalog. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

20 Hrs. and 40 Min. Our Flight in the Friendship. The American Girl, First Across the Atlantic by Air, Tells Her Story.

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1928. First edition, second printing, published the same year as the first. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the half title page, "To Mr. and Mrs. White with thanks for their kindness Amelia Earhart."Also included as an autographed letter signed by Amelia Earhart to the same recipient dated 14 March 1929 to Mrs. White, "thanking her for hosting the pilot while in Texas, sending this book, and mentioning that she is still enjoying the fresh gladiolas and sweet peas." In very good condition with light rubbing. A warm inscription. "In April 1928 Earhart received the telephone call that would change her life: an offer to become the first woman to fly the Atlantic. Earhart's impeccable character and physical resemblance to Charles A. Lindbergh made her an easy choice for the promoters, aviator Richard Byrd, publisher George Putnam, and socialite Amy Phipps Guest, who had originally intended to make the flight. On the morning of 3 July 1928 Earhart departed from Boston Harbor in a trimotor Fokker with pilots Wilmer 'Bill' Stultz and Louis 'Slim' Gordon. Earhart agreed to go as a passenger, though 'the idea of going as just 'extra weight' did not appeal to me at all.' Following the departure from Trepassy, Newfoundland, at 11:40 a.m. on 17 June, the Friendship encountered miserable weather, and Earhart never touched the controls during the 20-hour, 40-minute flight. Stultz landed the Fokker on the water at Burry Port, Wales, and Earhart became an immediate sensation. Earhart was astounded by the reception she received. She was feted in London and New York and was given a ticker-tape parade down Broadway with her nearly forgotten fellow pilots. On the postflight tour around the country... Earhart sensed her opportunity to promote her passions of aviation, feminism, and pacifism... Earhart became an accomplished speaker, writer, and columnist for Cosmopolitan. She joined Lindbergh in promoting a new air mail service, Transcontinental Air Transport, and she purchased a Lockheed Vega, which she flew in the first women's cross-country air derby in 1929" (ANB).

        MEMOIRS OF A FOX-HUNTING MAN

London: Faber and Gwyer Ltd. , 1928. Limited ed. Hardcover. Very Good +. 6 x 9 in. 395 pp. Blue cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine. A limited, signed edition on hand-made paper of 260, of which this is number 202. Condition of the book is VERY GOOD+ ; just the merest hint of shelf wear, covers extraordinarily clean and unblemished. Spine is sunned. Binding is tight and hinges have no play whatsover. The text is bright, clean and unmarked, with just a hint of foxing to the endpapers. Included is a 4 1/2 x 7 inch loose page of hand-laid paper with ink sketches of WWI officers, which was in this book when we bought it. I can't prove that they are by Sassoon, but they bear a striking similarity to a few others I researched online, notably sketches on letters from the front, circa 1917. See photograph provided and decide for yourself. A lovely copy of this rare and cherished book, with a likely terrific bonus in the sketch. Sport/Memoir. RGR.

Bottoms Up. Being a glossary of useful information for the thirsty.; Compiled by Two Knights and a Maid assisted by John Walker and the Haig Brothers

Minneapolis: Gordon Volland Publications / The Buzza Company, 1928. First edition. Original card covers, tied with a silk cord. 41 pages, printed rectos only. Die-cut in the shape of a cocktail shaker. Light wear to covers, pencil inscription inside cover. Damp mark affects the first eight pages. To quote Richard Powers's socialdance.stanford website: " This rare Prohibition Era cocktail recipe book, die-cut in the shape of a cocktail shaker, was published in the U.S. in 1928, at the height of the Prohibition Era, flaunting the ban on alcohol with cocktail recipes by famous silent film stars, vaudeville performers and musicians, including W. C. Fields, Fanny Brice, Florenz Ziegfield, Ted Lewis and George Gershwin. Bottoms Up is notable for two reasons. It was one of only a few cocktail books published in the U.S. during Prohibition, and it's the earliest known example of a book of cocktail recipes of famous celebrities. This is a natural pairing. While most Americans found it difficult or impossible to obtain alcohol during Prohibition, celebrities, especially in the entertainment business, thrived on the underground cocktail culture. . . . Today's tradition of American cocktails primarily developed during, and because of, Prohibition. Cocktail books before this era were usually trade publications intended for professional bartenders. Then the 1920s and early 30s saw the emergence of do-it-yourself cocktail books, mostly published in England, France, Canada and Cuba, featuring the new explosion of cocktails that developed during Prohibition. Very few cocktail books were published in the U.S. at this time, since the ingredients weren't available, and Bottoms Up is the rarest of them all....George Earl Buzza Jr. began his career as an artist, drawing cartoons for the Chicago Tribune. He was also a writer, printer, publisher, entrepreneur, and cocktail afficionado. He founded the Buzza Company in Minneapolis and built a factory with a distinctive tower, called Craftacres. Buzza also published a variety of books on topics such as entertaining, etiquette, bridge, and childrens' books. And the odd 1928 cocktail book Bottoms Up, at a time that most of the ingredients were illegal. In 1929, just before the stock market crash, Buzza sold his interest in the company and moved to Hollywood, intending to retire. Instead, the tireless entrepreneur formed a partnership with a fellow Minneapolis business associate. He became president of the Buzza-Cardozo Company, a greeting card firm in Hollywood, which also published books on the side, including Hollywood Cocktails, once again published during Prohibition. George designed the book himself. e Buzza Company specialized in designing and manufacturing greeting cards. By 1927 it was one of the nation's largest greeting card companies, shipping 40 million cards a year, with annual sales of $2.5 million.eorge Earl Buzza Jr. began his career as an artist, drawing cartoons for the Chicago Tribune.
