[ASIA - TURKMENISTAN] [Collection of Forty-Nine Original Photographs of Soviet Turkmenistan, Including Over Twenty Views of Ashgabat Taken Before the 1948 Earthquake, Views of Chardzhou, Mary, Kyzyl-Arvat, and Picturesque Portraits of the Local People]

Ca. 1928-1930. Forty-nine loose gelatin silver prints from ca. 13x18 cm (5 ¼ x 7 in) to ca. 10,5x16 cm (4 ¼ x 6 ¼ in). Seven photos captioned and/or numbered in Russian on verso. A couple of photos with minor small corners creases, one with a corner chip, but overall a very good collection. Interesting collection of early vivid photo views and scenes of Soviet Turkmenistan taken a few years after it had become a part of the Soviet Union (1924). The images were taken by talented Tashkent photographer Ivan Panov who worked for the State Art Publishing House in Moscow (Izogiz). Many of Panov's views of Central Asian cities and landscapes, as well as portraits of local people were printed as postcards by the Izogiz in the 1930s (he is known for his views of Tashkent, Lake Issyk-Kul in Kyrgyzstan, Chelyabinsk, Moscow, Black Sea resorts and others). The collection includes over twenty views of Ashgabat taken before the city was heavily destroyed during the 1948 earthquake. The images show the Baha'i temple (first in the world, constructed in 1908, demolished in 1963), monument to V. Lenin (finished in 1927), Turkmen Institute of Culture (decorated with the sculptures of Reading Turkmens - a man and a woman), Turkmen State Museum, Polytechnic school, Ashgabat Central Committee of the Communist Party, the storefront of the Ashgabat branch of the State Publishing House (Gosizdat), railway station, covered galleries of the city market, building of the textile factory (constructed in 1924), three views of Ashgabat water tower built after a project by V. Shukhov, Ashgabat state theatre of Russian drama, cinema theatre, and others. There are also interesting views of a Turkmen aul (village) near Kyzyl-Arvat (now Serdar, north-west of Ashgabat); boats and boats men on the Amu Darya River at Chardzhou (now Turkmenabad); a market and a camel caravan at rest in Mary (an oasis in the Karakum Desert). Over a dozen portraits depict the Turkmen people at a market (selling watermelons, sheep, harnesses); local families outside or inside their yurts, children, camel drovers, and others. Overall an interesting collection of vivid views of first Soviet years in Turkmenistan.

Original Drawing Signed with initials, with dedication in Cyrillic, rendered in colored pencil, 8vo, n,p., Nov.. 2, 1941

This is a suggestively erotic drawing, more subtle than is typical for Eisenstein's erotic drawings probably because of the age of the boy to whom he dedicated the picture. Eisenstein drew a female elephant wearing earrings cavorting with a male crocodile. In the background is a palm tree, in the foreground a shore line. He dedicates his bold, fantastical red and blue pencil drawing to Duglas Aleaxandrov, son of Soviet film maker Gregori Aleksandrov. Duglas was named after American actor Douglas Fairbanks. Eisenstein traveled with Aleksandrov to the United States and to Mexico in 1928. In the lower right, he writes in Cyrillic, "To My Friend Dug 2.11.41." On verso of the drawing is part of a print which was cut to make this smaller 8.75 x 6 inch sheet on which Eisenstein crafted this sketch for his friend's son. Eisenstein is rare in any form and especially with film association. Eisenstein drew this colorful sketch at the outset of war between Germany and the Soviet Union in 1941 . It was also the year "Nevsky" was rereleased to huge acclaim. Eisenstein and other artists were evacuated to Almaty (formerly Alma-Ata), Kazakhstan, and most stayed from 1941 to 1944.

        Contes. Editions du Tercentaire.

Paris: Au Sans Pareil, Rene Hilsum & Cie, 1928. A binding of particular joy to Bonet who believed it to be his first truly satisfactory work, terming it a "relieure heureuse. No. 12 of only 27 copies printed on velin de cuve and reserved for the Amis du Sans Pareil, this copy extra-illustrated with 12 proofs, one signed, 7 unpublished plate and the original propsectus boudn at the back. 33 plates by 33 artists including Laboureur, Charles Laborde, Marie Laurencin, J.G. Daragnes, A. Alexeieff, Andre Dignimont, Louis Jou, Constant le Breton and Frans Masereel. Some wood engravings printed in two colours, one coloured by pochoir and the remainder in black and white. In a remarkable binding designed by Paul Bonet, bound by Ferdinand Giraldon and finished between October 1929 and April 1930 of light brown crushed levant morocco, upper cover inlaid with semi-circular inlays of shades of brown morocco outlined in blind and platinum forming concentric circles, intersected by two cones of curved platinum fillets, lettered in black with the titles of the ten Contes of Perrault, blue morocco doublures with cascades of variously sized inlaid and tooled stars and dots, blue watered-silk endpapers, platinum top edge, decorated morocco backed chemise to match the spine of the binding in the original morocco edges slipcase. Signed on front turn-in. A very fine Art Deco binding by Paul Bonet fro the tercentenary edition of Perrault's tales called "L'Edition des 33 graveurs". Bonte considered that this binding held a pivotal and unique position in the development of his work. In his Carnets he describes it as a 'relieure heureuse' or happy binding and adds that it was the first that was satisfactory to him from a technical point of view. The binding appears to have been executed for R.Marty, his main patron between 1926 and 1929, but was not completed in time to be included in Auguste Blaizot's sale of Marty's collection in 1930.

ORIGINAL 1928 PHOTOGRAPH: "SHERLOCK HOLMES AUTHOR POSES IN PSYCHIC MUSEUM"

London, 1928. Doyle, A(rthur) Conan. ORIGINAL 1928 PHOTOGRAPH: "SHERLOCK HOLMES AUTHOR POSES IN PSYCHIC MUSEUM." London: Associated Press, (November 17th, 1928). Original vintage 8" by 10" gelatin silver print of Arthur Conan Doyle as he poses with his collection of items on display at his Psychic Museum which he established in close proximity to Westminster Abbey. Photographic images of Doyle, especially in this delicious context, are exceedingly uncommon. On the reverse of the photo are the AP's copyright stamp, date stamp, and a wonderful original press snipe with the following observation:" Sire Arthur Conan Doyle, famous creator of Sherlock Holmes and one of the world's greatest supporters of spiritualism, visualizes a virtually crimeless world as the result of the activities of the clairvoyant detectives who will be in attendance in every police station." Wonderful stuff! The photograph shows moderate handling wear with a few tiny nicks and creases to the borders but is otherwise in Very Good condition. PLEASE NOTE: the Lakin & Marley watermark is NOT on the actual photo, it's there in this specific case to discourage this rare image from being stolen and re-used by internet scoundrels. . Unbound. Very Good. Photograph.

        Orlando.

London: Hogarth Press, , 1928. A Biography. Octavo. Original orange cloth, title to spine gilt. Housed in an orange quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Frontispiece and 7 plates. Spine dulled, small mark to front cover, internally fresh. First edition, first impression. A superb presentation copy, inscribed by the author, "To Ottoline from Virginia", on the front free endpaper. Next to this, the recipient, Lady Ottoline Morrell, has drawn her monogram in pencil, and added the date (11 October 1928)and her address (Gower Street, WC). With Morrell's characteristic marginal markings in pencil to a number of passages in the text that appealed to her, and annotations to the rear free endpaper. Around the time the book was inscribed, Morrell had finished the renovations at No. 10 Gower Street, which she had acquired earlier in the year; she gave up residence in her country home, Garsington Manor, where she had been a renowned hostess, and began opening the town house to "the talent and intellect of London" (Darroch, p. 268). Woolf's initial spitefulness towards Morrell diminished with her move to London. She admired Morrell's uncomplaining spirit in the face of various ailments, including necrosis of the jaw, and, though she had initially derided Morrell's bohemian dress and mannerisms as "grand and artificial", with her arrival at Gower Street, "she realised that 'she continued to be as vivid, as idiosyncratic, and as unselfconsciously bizarre' wherever she was, 'whether you put her in a Lyons Corner Shop or in Windsor Castle'" (Humm, p. 220). Ottoline's "aristocratic connections, zest for theater, passion for art, and attachment to France converged in making her, at varying times, victim, idol, and, as Virginia Woolf said, "enchantress" of Bloomsbury" (Caws & Wright, p. 121). Provenance: from the library of Lady Ottoline Morrell, thence by descent.

PETER PAN. Or The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up

, 1928. 1928. [with letter from Cynthia Asquith] London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1928. Original blue-grey cloth with cover and spine labels, with dust jacket. First Edition of Barrie's famous play featuring Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, the Darling children and Nana, and of course Captain Hook and Smee. "Peter Pan" first turned up as a relatively minor character in Barrie's 1902 novel, THE LITTLE WHITE BIRD. Then in December 1904 this play was first produced, but it was not published until 1928, as this volume in "The Uniform Edition of The Plays of J. M. Barrie." (In the interim, 1911 to be specific, Barrie wrote a narrative version which was published as the book PETER AND WENDY.)~Included in this book is Barrie's 29-page Dedication "To the Five" in which he relates how, decades earlier, he had created (with their help) Peter Pan. Although he identifies them here only as #s 1 through 5, these were the five sons of Arthur and Sylvia Llewelyn Davies, with whom Barrie (according to a biographer) was "obsessed." The boys' names were George, John, Peter, Michael and Nicholas, and in the play they appear as George (the father) Darling, John Darling, Peter Pan, and Michael Nicholas Darling.~This volume is in fine condition; the dust jacket is just about fine as well, with a few tiny edge-nicks. Cutler pp 200-201.~Loosely inserted is a letter from "C. Greene (for Sir James Barrie)" to Samuel Heiman, dated 21 January 1927, regarding a speech Barrie had made; on the front endpaper (which is browned from the letter) is Heiman's bookplate. "C. Greene" was the pen-name of Barrie's personal secretary, Lady Cynthia Asquith, daughter-in-law of the former Prime Minister -- and herself a published writer.
