HODSON, Vernon Charles Paget.
London: Constable & Company Ltd. [vols. 2 & 3]; Phillimore & Co. Ltd. [vols. 3 & 4], 1927-46. London: Constable & Company Ltd. [vols. 2 & 3]; Phillimore & Co. Ltd. [vols. 3 & 4],, 1927-46. Alphabetically Arranged and Annotated with Biographical and Genealogical Notices. 4 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, spines lettered and ruled in gilt, blind rules to covers, bottom edges untrimmed (fore edges also untrimmed in volumes 3 & 4). With the dust jackets for volumes 1 & 2. Edges spotted, endpapers browned, short split to vol. 1 inner hinge, vol. 3 very slightly sunned along extremities, vol. 4 spine rolled, the 2 dust jackets spotted, with slightly chipped and frayed spines and joint-ends, and a few other minor nicks or chips. An excellent, bright set. First edition of this extremely uncommon and indispensable reference work, containing over 7,000 records and much improved and expanded from its predecessor, Dodwell and Miles's Alphabetical List, which was published in 1838. There was an 18-year hiatus between the publication of the second and third volumes, and the dust jackets of the first two volumes state that the print-run was limited to 500 copies of each, of which 450 were for sale; the final two volumes were also issued in a limited edition, though the number of copies is not stated. We trace four complete sets in auction records in the last 50 years, with no recorded mention of the dust jackets. Hodson (c. 1883-1963) was an officer in the Indian Army.

SUMMERS, Montague, ed.)
London: The Fortune Press, 1927 - Octavo. Original brown boards, brown cloth backstrip, spine lettered in gilt, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. With the dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown, pencilled ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Surface-splitting to hinge between signatures D and E, light spotting to deckle-edges, faint tanning to endleaves. An excellent copy in the clean and fresh dust jacket. Wood-engraved frontispiece and title-page, foliate head- and tailpieces, facsimile of original title-page. First Fortune Press edition (and second overall), limited to 575 copies printed on hand-made paper, of which this is number 474. This "collection of all the choice songs, poems, prologues, and epilogues, (sung and spoken at courts and theaters) never in print before" was originally published in London in 1672, that edition now represented in only eight known copies in libraries worldwide. An unusually restrained production from Reginald Caton's Fortune Press: "Caton was an enigma. The Fortune Press made him money principally through its steady output of pornography His interest in proper literature was a means of providing his pornography list with a shroud of respectability and, given that it made him little money, as a tax dodge for his other role as landlord of a large number of low-rent, barely habitable properties in Brighton" (Bradford, The Odd Couple, Ch. 3). D. Appleton and Co. New York 1927. First Edition. Edna Reindel dustjacket art. Author's scarce first novel. A "Penetrating study of modern social life in New York and Europe. Several of Bellah's western stories served as the basis for acclaimed films including: Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and Rio Grande. Claude ANET
Paris: Simon Kra, 1927. The earliest biography of the great French tennis star Suzanne Lenglen, her career not yet being over. Claude Anet was a very close friend and a natural choice for this book. Covers her early life and also the heady life that she led on the French Riviera over many years when her regular afternoon matches were watched at Cannes and Nice by huge crowds with vast sums of money being wagered on the result. The matches with Dorothea Lambert Chambers, Molla Mallory and Helen Wills each get their own chapter. This book was only issued in a run of 300 copies. French language. 8vo. 196pp. Rebound in quarter leather with marbled boards and endpapers. Original paper wrappers retained. A very good copy.

DELTEIL, Joseph.
New York: Minton, Blach & Company, 1927. New York: Minton, Blach & Company,, 1927. Translated from the French Jacques Le Clercq. Octavo. Original blue cloth, title gilt to the spine, blue top-stain. With the handsome pictorial dust jacket featuring artwork by C. Le Roy Baldridge. Cloth a little spotted, light toning to the text, else very good in a slightly rubbed jacket with a few minor chips at the edges. First edition in English of this highly-coloured popular history of World War I which had been published in French the previous year. This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper by the translator, who has neatly added his New York address to the title page. Le Clercq was a published poet, who also contributed articles and reviews to the Smart Set and the American Mercury, later becoming an editor for Brentano's. The recipient. Charles Mills Gayley, professor of English and Classics at the University of California, Berkeley, almost certainly taught Le Clercq during his time there, and would have been a colleague during the translator's time as Instructor of Romance Languages, 1920-2. Gayley was notable for his promotion of America's entry into World War I. Loosely inserted pencilled rough draft for Gayley's note of thanks for the book; "I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed your brilliant translation … it could have been made only by one who is a poet himself".

Catalogue - spectacles etc. Societe des Lunetiers, Paris.
- The company [192-?]. Cloth screw binder 28x20cm; 350pp, illustrated throughout. A nice copy. An exemplary catalogue of everything for improved vision and those in the trade. Spectacles, goggles, lens of all kinds, and all the bits and pieces for ophthalmologists and optomerists. The Societe was a conglomerate that began as co-operative in the mid 19th century and set out to conquer the optical world. They are still doing so under some forgettable name. There is no mention here of their radical new Stigmal lens which dates this before 1927.
