In The Ring And Out [Inscribed By Jack Johnson To Ralph Capone, Brother Of Al Capone]]

Chicago: National Sports Publishing Company, 1927. First Edition. Red Cloth. Very Good/No Dust Jacket. Photographs. Inscribed By Jack Johnson. 259 Pp. Red Ribbed Cloth, Gilt. Some Wear, Spine Gilt Present But Weak, Pages Browning,A Few Small Water Spot On Front Cover And One On Rear Cover, Inscribed To Ralph (Capone). Autobiography Of Jack Johnson, [1878-1946), Prizefighter. "Despite The Tissue Of Untruths That Fill In The Ring-And Out, Jack Johnson's 1927 Autobiography, There Is Little Doubt That Even Here He Remained Unyieldingly The Auteur Of His Own Mythology, That Is, On The One Indisputably True Claim He Made About The Book. He Wrote The Book Himself, Without A Ghost-Writer. He Is One Of Only, At Best, A Handful Of Star Athletes Who Can Say That." [Oxford Companion To African American Literature.] From The Library Of Sportswriter Art Cohn, Who Famously Criticisms Of Racial Preferences In Sports And Published Strong Criticisms Of Avery Brundage And The U. S. Olympic Committee On Their Behalf. "Art Dedicated His Career To Making Sports Truly All-American..." This Copy Inscribed "To Ralph My Friend From A Fair Heavyweight Jack Johnson." Johnson Opened The Club De Luxe In New York In 1920; This Became The Cotton Club When Taken Over By Owney Madden In 1923, And Ralph Capone, Brother Of Al Capone, Later Opened A Chicago Branch Of The Club. One Might Fairly State That Ralph Capone Was The Only Person Known Throughout Chicago As Just "Ralph" At That Time, And Johnson Usually Inscribed His Books With Both A First And Last Name Of The Recipient, And Only Ralph Capone Was Well Known Enough To Be Addressed Only As "Ralph". Records Show That Johnson Knew Many Of The Famous Gangsters Of The 1920'S Thru 1940'S, So This May Have Been Inscribed To Ralph Capone; Iif It Was Inscribed To Capone, It May Be The Only Book Ever Inscribed To Him. Worn But Solid, Hinges Tight, Spine Gilt Present But Weak, Point Of Fraying At Top Of Rear Spine Edge, A Few Small Light Damp Spots, No Other Names Or Marks. No Dust Jacket.

        La Nouvelle lanterne

NL 1927 - PLANHOL (René de). La Nouvelle lanterne. Paris, NL, 1927-1937. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Films Paramount. Livre D'Or Saison 1927-1928

Paris: Societe Anonyme Francaise des Films Paramount. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Scarce movie studio promotion, with only copy recorded on OCLC at the BNF. Folio, 38 by 28 cm. Unpaginated, but four pages devoted to each of 42 productions slated for the season. Each of the productions has one full page color plate -- essentially a movie poster mock-up -- and one or two tinted pages with photo images from the upcoming production. Most of the movies are from Hollywood, but there are a few French productions. At the time, Paramount was the largest and most powerful studio, and this lavish promotion, intended for exhibitors, was issued probably right before the release of "The Jazz Singer" and the movie industry was thrown into turmoil. Thus it came out at the precise moment bullish confidence was at its zenith, and in terms of silent movies, the industry had settled into some maturity, soon of course to be shaken. Many of the stars on the Paramount roster then remain well-known to this day, at least by movie afficianados, and a good number of them went on to substantial careers in the thirties and beyond in sound movies: Adolph Menjou, Bebe Daniels, Wallace Beery, Gloria Swanson, Warner Baxter, to name a few. Others are now more solidly associated with Silents, such as Harold Lloyd, Pola Negri and Clara Bow, although they all did make the transition to sound pictures. Visually, a highlight is a color plate of a movie theatre lobby, an image that captures the opulence, pretension and spirit of the commercial film industry in the late twenties. A fun, colorful, flamboyant and informative work for a serious movie buff. The cover has a bronzed surface, with blindstamping of the title, the Paramount insignia, etc. Restorations to the joints. Clean within.

THIRTY-FOUR DECORATIVE DESIGNS BY FRANCIS CREASE with a Preface by Evelyn St John Waugh

Privately Printed 1927 - First edition, sole printing, limited to sixty copies "for private circulation". Folio. Original marbled paper covered boards with one of the Crease designs stamped on the front board. A near fine copy with just a trace of wear to the spine ends. Pictorial title page plus 33 further Beardsley-esque designs by Francis Crease. Francis Crease was a master at Lancing whilst Waugh was there and taught him calligraphy and graphic design. Waugh called him "one of two characters who were equal and opposite influences on my adolescence. a secret man" (A Little Learning). He also had some regard for Crease as an artist as a letter to Dudley Carew of 1922 attests, ".a wider outlook has given me a far larger realisation of Crease's designs. I am convinced now that that man is a great artist. Before I hung my admiration on his character & did not understand his work fully. It is really great Carey. I am now convinced of that." Although Waugh's contribution is merely listed as a preface, it is the sole text of the book, thus staking a claim to be considered his second published work (after PRB) and preceding all of his fiction. With engraved frontispiece, 5 folding engraved maps, 4 full-page engraved plates (views). Modern half morocco.

Alden & Landis 715/148 (4 copies); Muller, America 1927; Sabin 18386 & 72761; Tiele, Bibl. 291; STCN (1 copy). Rare first and only Dutch edition (the second edition in any language, and the first to include illustrations in addition to maps) of a very colourful and influential eye-witness account of an important voyage around the world and especially along the Pacific coast of Mexico and South America, 1708 to 1711. Its story of the marooned Alexander Selkirk served (with Edward Cooke's account of the same voyage) as the basis for Defoe's 1719 Robinson Crusoe. Since the first edition of Rogers was not illustrated, the present plate of his party meeting Selkirk before his hut seems to be the world's first Robinson Crusoe illustration. With an old owner's name (Schuchardt) on the title-page. With water stains affecting about fifty leaves and small holes in a half-dozen leaves, some repaired. Good copy of the first illustrated edition of an exciting story of adventures at sea.

HISTOIRE CHARMANTE DE L'ADOLESCENTE SUCRE D'AMOUR

Paris: F.-L. Schmied, 1927. FIRST EDITION. No. 50 OF 170 COPIES, SIGNED BY SCHMIED y. This is an excellent example of the impressive book arts productions of François-Louis Schmied (1873-1941), a man who raised Art Deco to its highest level in the field of bibliophile publishing in France and someone who generally was responsible (as here) for every aspect of the production of his books. He engraved all of the woodcut decorations and plates for "Histoire," and printed them himself as well as designed the layout of the text, which was printed with the assistance of his son Théo and P. Guillemat. The text here is a love story set in the Middle East, the work of Dr. Joseph-Charles Mardrus (1868-1949), who described himself as "Muslim by birth and Parisian by accident." Born in Egypt and educated in Lebanon, the physician and eminent Orientalist was a fixture in the intellectual circles of Paris, where he helped to inspire the rage for all things Oriental. He produced a well-received, unexpurgated translation of "One Thousand and One Nights," and was commissioned by the French government to produce a translation of the Koran. He gives full credit to Schmied for the realization of the present work in his inscription, which reads: "Dear Schmied, it is to please you that this unpublished text has been developed. Without you, without your enthusiasm, it would still be in nothingness. Your friend, J. C. M.". 318 x 241 mm. (12 1/2 x 9 1/2"). 8 p.l. (first four blank), 145 pp., [9] leaves (last four blank). FIRST EDITION. No. 50 OF 170 COPIES, SIGNED BY SCHMIED. Unbound as issued in original printed paper wrappers. With 14 full-page color wood engravings (including the frontispiece signed in pencil by Schmied) and 635 color panel borders, line fillers, and tailpieces in the Art Deco style, all by Schmied. Recto of limitations page with a facsimile inscription by the author to Schmied. Carteret IV, 263. Short ink mark to margin of title page, just the faintest isolated smudge or freckled foxing, otherwise a very fine copy, clean and fresh, with the fragile wrapper unsoiled and remarkably well preserved. C. M."

FIRST EDITIONS (2 Volume) OF GEORG OHM'S FIRST & SECOND PAPERS, HERE BEGINNING A SERIES "of experiments documenting the voltage across and the current through simple electrical circuits containing various lengths of wire" (History of Science: The Wenner Collection). These papers lead directly to his seminal 1927 formulation theory of galvanic electricity, or Ohm's Law. Note that the first paper, Vorläufige, (V. 14) was published first in Schweigger's Journal fur Chemie und Physik while the second paper, also in Schweigger's (V. 16), was published simultaneously in Annalen der Physik as well - meaning that neither scholars nor collectors consider the Schweigger appearance of the second paper, Bestimmung, or the Annalen appearance of more import or worth than the other. " In the field of electrical measurement, Ohm was the great pioneer" ( PMM, 174). He began publishing his electricity researches in 1825 with the first paper: "Vorlaufige Anzeige des Gesetzes" offered here. In it, he "sought to find a functional relationship between the decrease in the electromagnetic force exerted by a current-carrying wire and the length of the wire. Although this paper contained some fundamental errors, it was remarkable for its direct foundation on experiment - the paper deduced clear mathematical relationships based purely on the experimental evidence that Ohm had tabulated; this would grow to be a defining characteristic of all Ohm's early papers (Jeremy Norman). In the second paper offered , Ohm presented the experimental proof of his law, "the fundamental law of electric circuits" (Dibner 63). "Ohm's experimental procedure in ["Bestimmung des Gesetzes"] was analogous to that which he had used earlier but was modified in several significant ways… He now used a thermoelectric pile in order to eliminate the fluctuations in current strength accompanying the voltaic pile, fluctuations that Ohm attributed to changes produced by the current in the distribution of the components in the liquid conductor. "Second, he sought a direct relationship between the electromagnetic force of the current and the entire length of the connecting wire. . . . [in] the paper in question Ohm simply observed that the data from each of his several sets of experiments were very closely represented by the formula X = a/(b + x), where X is the strength of the electromagnetic effect-which he took as a measure of the electric current-of a conductor of length x on the magnetic needle of a Coulomb torsion balance, and where a and b are constants the exact nature of which he proposed to determine from additional series of carefully controlled experiments. The observation that b remained constant for all series of experiments, whereas a varied with temperature, led Ohm to conclude that a depended solely on the electromotive force of the pile and b solely on the resistance of the remaining portion of the circuit, in particular that of the pile itself. He also observed that the electromotive force of the thermoelectric pile appeared to be exactly proportional to the temperature difference at its end points. . . . " "After reconfirming the validity of his law by a further series of experiments, Ohm exhibited its explanatory powers on some of the chief unsolved problems which had occupied scientists working on the pile; and he showed how it also cast light on a number of other previously reported but poorly understood experimental findings. . . . The fruitful application of Ohm's simple law to existing problems was an explanatory tour de force" (DSB, Vol. 10). CONDITION & DETAILS: 2 volumes. Halle: Journal für Chemie und Physik. 8vo. Volume 14: [2], 14, [496], 3, [2]. 3 plates. Volume 16: [2], 16, [496], 4, [2]. 3 large fold-out plates. Small stamp on title pages. Beautifully rebound in period goatskin over marbled paper; 5 raised bands at the spine with gilt-tooling and -lettering in the compartments. New endpapers. Minor toning within. Near fine condition.

With engraved frontispiece, 5 folding engraved maps, 4 full-page engraved plates (views). Modern half morocco.

Rare first and only Dutch edition (the second edition in any language, and the first to include illustrations in addition to maps) of a very colourful and influential eye-witness account of an important voyage around the world and especially along the Pacific coast of Mexico and South America, 1708 to 1711. Its story of the marooned Alexander Selkirk served (with Edward Cooke's account of the same voyage) as the basis for Defoe's 1719 Robinson Crusoe .
