        F. Wagner-Poltrock [Unique Extr-Illustrated Family Copy]

Berlin, Leipzig und Wien: Friedrich Ernst Hübsch, 1927. Hardcover. g to vg. Quarto. xxv, 78pp., plus 36 original photographs and four architectural plans mounted to 20 privately bound heavy stock leaves. Original yellow cloth with reverse yellow design and lettering on printed brown surface of cover and spine. Tan endpapers girding original illustrations on inside covers. Introduction by Eugen Kurt Fischer, a journalist, radio broadcaster and author on the theory and history of radio plays, and one of the pioneers of German radio. The architect Friedrich Wagner-Poltrock (1883-1961) was a government building officer in Chemnitz from 1914-1925. In 1925 Poltrock-Wagner opened his own architecture office in Chemnitz and went on to become one of the most important architects helping to shape the modern architecture of the city, most prominently with his Industrieschule Chemnitz (Industrial School), Transformatorenwerk Chemnitz-Mitte (Transformer Factory) and the Strumpffabrik Götze Oberlungwitz (Stocking Factory). The "Neue Werkkunst" volume is one of a series of publications on contemporary architecture with representatives of the new architecture as well as conservative architects. This volume contains alltogether 50 original b/w photographs mounted on privately bound in separate leaves, including vintage prints (9 1/4 x 6 3/4") of Wagner-Poltrock projects mentioned above, some with handwritten captions, reproductions of architectural drawings and plans, a photograph of Wagner-Poltrock and his wife Elisabeth mounted to the free front endpaper with a handwritten description by their daughter Gudula underneath (my parents Friedrich Wagner-Poltrock, Anna Elisabeth geb. Wildeman on December 6, 1960, her 70th birthday, a few weeks before father's death on February 5th, 1961), the obituary mounted to the tan back endpaper as well as laid in newspaper articles. Handwritten captions for original photographs include "our cabin on the Keilberg in the Ore Mountains" or "Haus Friedrich in Burkardtsdorf in the Ore Mountains, 1931" and on the side of this photograph showing the Wagner-Poltock house "The girl with the braids am I, Gudula, 7-8 years old."In addition to the two portrait photographs the book contains- seven of the hunting tavern in Fürstenbrunn, 1930, - five photographs of the Goetze Stocking Factory, 1929, (one of them with handwritten caption in pencil on verso, probably by Wagner-Poltrock himself, "Bild zeigt: Alte u. Neubau ... Neue Fabrick mit Neubau 1927, Verbindung beider Gebäude durch Turm).- eleven of the Industrial School Chemnitz (plus four architectural drawings of the school), 1928, - three depicting the Transformer Factory, 1929, - ten photographs of residential buildings, including Landhaus Otto, 1928, - four of the Diesterweg School, including two of architectural models, 1928-1930, - one bowling alley, - five reproductions of sketches of Prague,- one public sculpture, 1933, and - one unidentified buildingThe versatility of Wagner-Poltrock's interests and projects is astonishing. It encompasses schools, churches, bridges, high risers, water towers, country homes, hunting lodges, castles, factories, streets. gardens, a stadium, even a cemetery was among his plans. Among the staff of his firm were Alfred Gerstenberg, Heinz Götze, Laurentinus Hinrichsen, Robert Jüttner, Friedrich Keller-Niederlenz, Herbert Neumeister, Waldemar Nödelchen, Erich Loebell, Gottfried Ruckdeschel, Hanns Wolfgang Scharre und Max Werner. The plates of the original publication illustrate the wide palette of architectural works by Wagner-Poltrock and feature sepia toned architectural photographs, one of them credited to Werner Kump, reproductions of architectural drawings and plans, scenic sketches and watercolors. An extraordinary view of the work of this influential architect.Compare to the original publication this rebound copy differs in the the following ways: illustrated endpapers, front endpaper with publisher's logo, half-title and copyright page on verso are missing and replaced with free endpapers and mounted photographs. Page xxvi listing engineers and architects working in Wagner-Poltrock's office, as mentioed above, is covered with an original photograph of the Industrieschule. On the following page the printed word Abbildungen (images) is covered with a pasted down original photograph of Landhaus Otto and loose. Text in German. Binding with light wear along edges and lightly rubbed. Cloth at spine separated at back joint, probably the result of adding mentioned additional plates. Board still firmly attached. Wagner-Poltrock with address inked to front tan endpaper, address crossed out with pencil and new address plus Gudula Soergel geb. Wagner-Poltrock penciled below. Trapezoid shaped artistic b/w exlibris glued to inside front and back cover reading Polier (Supervisor of a architectural project) and Architekt. One leaf, plate one and two is missing and replaced with loose leave containing original prints and plates 75-78 rebound out of order before plates 73 and 74. Obituary with crease at foredge. Considering the personalized additions requiring disassembly and rebinding of the book this copy is in good to very good condition.

The Story of My Experiments with Truth.

Ahmedabad: Navajivan Press, 1927-9.. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK-FORM, also the FIRST ENGLISH LANGUAGE PRINTING, translated from the Gujarati. Octavo, 2 volumes COMPLETE, with sepia portraits of the author in each. Pale green linen-covered boards, blocked in dark blue, in original grey dust-wrappers blocked in the same fashion, priced at 5/8 rupees to spine, edges untrimmed. Some very light and occasional spotting, books and jackets lightly handled and edgeworn, spine a little toned to volume one. There is none of the inherent browning of the endpapers and the contents are remarkably fresh. Both volumes contain a contemporary gift note to Scottish academic Stanley W. Davies, from the legal historian and author Mahtabsing Sahibsing Shahani of Delhi. The fact that both volumes when new were sent to a more favourable climate would account for this exceptional survival. This two-volume work is an inestimable rarity, essentially unheard of in decent jackets; the present example is near fine. Mahatma Gandhi [1869-1948), the inspirational major political and spiritual leader of India. His autobiography was serialized in Gujarati in the weekly magazine Navjivan, 1925-28 and is collected in book-form as two volumes, being published two years apart. Occasionally mis-described as 'Holland', it was in fact bound in 'khadi' cloth, a homespun linen that Gandhi adopted as a symbol of Indian struggle against the British, this material also being used for the traditional clothing of the printers who produced this book, and seemingly a delicacy to the insect life of the Indian subcontinent. It has long been described as a tan colour binding, yet the true shade is a fugitive pale green as seen here- even this fine copy has slightly sunned to beige/tan at the extremities. The two-volume work is uncommon in any condition (7 at auction in 35 years) and has, to my knowledge never been encountered in collectable condition in jacket; just two wrappered copies are recorded at auction, -one an ex-library set, suitably worn and another 'frayed' example around volume two only.

        Zhelezni ikoni [Iron icons]

Novo iskustvo [New art], Sofia 1927 - Original publisher's wrappers, 12mo - 177/130mm., 46+2 p. (See Domenico Jacono, Bulgarian modernism 1919-1934, N 37, p.47). First edition of this program poetical book, printed in the same publishing house where were issued Lamar's magazine "Novis". The once in this book with revolutionary verses is the new religion with their new icons - hammered (not just made) from iron. The woodcut by Max Metzger (see Ruja Marinska, 20ties in the Bulgarian art, p. 126) on the front cover visualize the essence of these poems: The opened (without walls) temple, ringing bell and speech - this is the constructivist image of the new religion. The traditional icon is replaced by the title of the book - the image of the saint (saints) was replaced by the words of revolution. Under the arch we see a symbol of a musical note depicted the move - it's ringing the bells of new knowledge. The new icons are not silent anymore, they speak loudly, they are iron words. But. A little more distant glance will recognize a male face with left blinking eye. More precisely - a stylized portrait of a certain tragic figure of that era. The letters of the title "Iron Icons" closed lower half of this portrait, where the mouth is suppose to be. From this perspective, already overlapping geometric shapes below will distinguish black boots. In the heel of the left boot, in white circle we can see "X" - that is the Bulgarian letter for "H". Honestly, we prefer the first interpretation (M. Dimitrov). About this copy. Very good at all with a few small shortcomings. Slightly uneven outlines and rounded corners, two missing parts at the edges of the spine (about 1 cm. each). The pictures shows real colors etc. Our images aren't splendid, but are true. We stay available for any question and extra pictures on request. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Khorosho! Oktiabr'skaia Poema

1927 - First edition. 8vo., original typographic wrappers designed by El Lissitzky. Moscow, State Publishing. Inscribed by the author on the inside of the wrapper (there is no preliminary blank leaf or endpaper) with a quotation from his own verse, which translates as: ?In all situations and at all times 'Life is good and it is good to be alive'?, signed and dated 24th October 1927. A postscript quotes, presumably reinforcing an intended irony of the principal inscription, from a popular song of the period: ?'And early tomorrow at dawn, all my family will cry'? Khorsho!, variously translated as Good! or Very Goodis a long poem celebrating the 10th anniversary of the October revolution. With one cup ring to the upper wrapper and some other small stains, overlapping edges of wrappers very slightly worn and crumpled, but an excellent copy withal.         The etchings of Norman Lindsay

London : Constable & Co., 1927. Folio, gilt-lettered blue buckram (spine faded, one corner slightly bumped), top edge gilt, 45 leaves of plates with accompanying title leaf, each a fine photogravure reproduction of a Norman Lindsay etching, occasional foxing. Limited to 129 copies of which 120 were for sale, signed and numbered by Norman Lindsay. A de luxe edition of 31 copies with the original etching 'Your Fate' was also issued. The etchings of Norman Lindsay, published in lavish large format, was admired by Lindsay himself 'as a facsimile perfect as reproduction can be' (from a 1938 letter to Andrew Watt), and '[it] remains one of the most tantalising collections of his work' (BLOOMFIELD, Lin. The complete etchings of Norman Lindsay, Odana 1998, p 65). Lindsay's popularity in the 1920s had risen meteorically, so that the very restricted print run of only 160 copies over two editions fell far short of the market's demands. The book sold out a month prior to publication, dissapointing many prominent collectors including Howard Hinton in New England. Only a handful of copies made it to Austraila, due to it selling out in London, as well as the fact that Australian customs held the two copies sent to Gill's Fine Art Society on the grounds that it was an immoral publication. Bloomfield notes that many copies have been broken to sell the plates: as early as 1938 the reproductions were selling for 21 shilling each, prompting her to observe that 'The Etchings of Norman Lindsay has become the rarest of any of Norman's books'. This statement is supported by a quote from George Mackaness, who wrote in 1965: '... within my knowledge only one copy of this has ever appeared in any Australian or British bookseller's catalogue or at auction'. A handful of copies have been sold since then, but The etchings of Norman Lindsay remains one of his most sumptuous and rare large scale publications.

Autograph Letter, signed ("Aldous Huxley"), to Mr. Rimington, regarding photographic portraits of himself

Florence, Italy, 1927. 1-1/2 pages in ink, on front and rear of single sheet. 1 vols. 4to. Fine. 1-1/2 pages in ink, on front and rear of single sheet. 1 vols. 4to. " ... the photograph is good ... made by the Steichen Studio" Apologizing for not being able to send a photograph of himself any better than the reproduction of one he has cut out of VANITY FAIR from the previous April, Huxley remarks: "I have been living away from my possessions, I could not get at any old portraits ... I'm sorry I can't do better. But the photograph is good - & if by the way, Doran's should want to use any picture for advertising purposes, I wish they'd use this, which was made by the Steichen Studio, New York, or else an excellent newspaper picture made by the Montauk Photograph Co ... . whose address is, I think, Canal Street, near the wharf."

Candide, or All for the Best.

New York: The Bennett Libraries Inc.,, 1927. Translated from the French. With 10 etchings. Exact reprint of the earliest English text printed in Holland by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen, founded in Haarlem Anno MDCCIII. Octavo. Publisher's deluxe red morocco, titles and decoration to spine gilt in compartments, covers blocked with elaborate gilt design, Tice nude tan calf onlay to front cover, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, full green and red morocco doublures decorated in gilt, green silk moiré endpapers, red silk page marker. Frontispiece and 9 other plates in two states (10 on japon, 10 on pannekoek paper) with captioned tissue-guards, an additional hand-coloured etching on japon, and an original signed drawing in coloured pencils by Tice. Titles printed in red and black. Spine lightly browned, slight rubbing to head of spine, a little offsetting to endpapers, page marker loose, partly unopened; an excellent copy. First Tice edition, one of three copies extra-illustrated with 11 hand-coloured etchings on japon, from a total edition of 1,000 copies, this copy also with a signed full page original sketch in coloured pencils by Tice on the half-title. This special limitation is presented as a manuscript slip, itself signed and hand-illustrated by Tice, laid down to the limitation page with the justification "One of three copies with Original Etchings". These original etchings thus present all ten original plates in two states, and add an additional illustration (facing p. 30) not given in the normal issue. The rest of the edition consists of 247 copies printed on Pannekoek paper, with colour plates and bound in less elaborately decorated full morocco to a design by Tice, and 750 copies in quarter cloth, with uncoloured plates. The only other copy of this special issue that we can trace at auction did not have the original hand-illustration by Tice present in this copy. Clara Tice (1888–1973) was a notorious New York bohemian artist, known as "the Queen of Greenwich Village". She was, according to the New York Times, the first woman in New York to bob her hair, in 1908. She began exhibiting her art from 1910 and in 1915 her fame skyrocketed when the Society for the Prevention of Vice attempted to confiscate her works at the bohemian restaurant Polly's. "Tice was apparently so highly regarded and so instantly recognizable as one of those 'queer artists' that her role in the first Greenwich Village Follies was simply to play herself. As 'Clara,' she stepped out onto the stage at the appointed time, outfitted in one of her typically bizarre bohemian ensembles, and conducted a 'quick chalk talk of nudes, bees and butterflies'" (Sawelsan-Gorse). Throughout the 1920s she illustrated for Vanity Fair amongst other magazines, and illustrated several books with her softly erotic drawings.

[SHORT LIFE OF THE SOCIETY OF RUSSIAN SCULPTORS] Katalog 2-i vystavki skul'ptury Obshchestva russkikh skul'ptorov O.R.S. [i.e. The Catalogue of the Second Exhibition of Sculpture of the Society of Russian Sculptors O.R.S.]

Moscow: Glavnauka, 1927. 16 pp. 17,2x13,3 cm. In original printed wrappers. Very good, two close tears of the spine and some spots near the spine. One of 1000 copies. Very rare. The catalogue for the 2nd exhibition (of only 4 held by the Society) which took place in 1927 provides names of the members and exhibitors with the addresses, for each work materials and titles are named. The catalogue is supplied with a list of the members of the Society with their positions and the address of the board. The Society (ORS) was founded in 1926 by former members of the Moscow Union of Artists and Sculptors. The impetus for the creation was the success of the sculptural department of the OBIS exhibition held in early 1925. The Society consisted of almost all famous Moscow sculptors, and their ranks was regularly replenished by the graduates of the sculpture faculty of Vkhutemas-Vkhutein. About 20 people were constantly members, 10-15 more sculptors were involved as exhibitors (candidates). Many participants were simultaneously members of other societies and unions: Korolev and Kepinov - OMH, Chaikov - «4 iskusstva», Shadr - AHRR; however, the ORS flourished tolerance for various trends in art (including the «left»). The meetings were held mainly in the workshop of Ryndziunskaia. Reports were read and discussed on the problems of sculpture like Ternovets made a report «On Contemporary Sculpture in the West», architect Konstantin Melnikov with a report «On Cooperation of Sculptors and Architects in Contemporary Construction». The ORS didn't have a program but they were determined to strengthened position of sculpture as an independent art genre and paid a lot of attention to raising the level of professionalism. The ORS held 4 exhibitions: in March-April 1926 (the State Historical Museum), in April 1927 (the Museum of the Revolution), in June 1929 and June 1931 (both - the Pushkin Museum), which were partly financed by Glavnauka. The exhibition committee was engaged in selection of works for the exhibitions, at different times it included Vatagin, Efimov, Zlatovratsky, Chaikov, Domogatsky, Mukhina. If the first exhibition declared a sculpture as an independent genre with such strong works like "Flame of Revolution" by Mukhina, the second was supposed to consolidate its positions. For the opening of the 2nd exhibition the monumental Chaikov's sculpture «The Tower of October» was set in front of the Museum of the Revolution. The exhibition was attended by 33 masters who showed 133 works, including: «The Walking Elephant» and «Seated Peacock» by Vatagin, «A.S. Pushkin» by Domogatsky, "The Wind» by Mukhina, «Sitting Woman (Stasya)» by Lebedeva, «Molodaika» by Ryndzyunskaya, «Oktyabrenok» by Sandomirskaya, «Bather», «Mostostroitel» by Chaikov. Since the late 1920s, the ORS was attacked by Proletkult theorists for lack of «ideological content» and adherence to «bourgeois» forms of «sculpture». In the spring of 1932 the Society was liquidated. Worldcat locates only one copy in Getty Research Institute.

Strande, oft ghedichte van de schelpen, kinckhornen, ende andere wonderlicke zee-schepselen, tot lof van den schepper aller dinghen.Amsterdam, Dirck Pietersz. Pers, 1614. 4to. With woodcut device on title-page with the motto "Templum Dei estis vos". Gold-tooled brown/green (goatskin) morocco (1914), gold-tooled spine, triple gold fillets on boards and double on board edges, richly gold-tooled turn-ins, gilt edges; bound by the leading Brussels bookbinder Charles de Samblanx.

Knuttel, “Een vergeten dichter” in: De gids XCI (1927), pp. 292-299; STCN (5 copies); for the binder: H. Dubois d'Enghien, La reliure en Belgique au 19e siècle, pp. 147-152. Very rare second edition of a pioneering Dutch renaissance poem on shells, comparable to Huygens's much later and much better known Hofwijck (1653). "If we compare both poets, Huygens has more to say and has a lot more twists than the repetitive Philibert, but the latter is nevertheless more poetic. Van Borssele sees with a painter's eye, speaks more beauty, is more courageous and less forced in his images and epithets, and gives more warmth to his verse" (Knuttel). Van Borsselen based his poems on the collection of shells of his brother-in-law, Cornelis Van Blijenburgh (1545-1618), but it's much more than just a dry enumeration and description. The poem was probably written before 1600 and first published in 1611. Both editions are equally rare. The work is charmingly bound by the leading Brussels bookbinder Charles de Samblanx (1855-1943)."Son œuvre, extrêmement abondant et varié, offrait dans tous les genres des spécimens remarquables. Il avait contribué, pour une largo part, à maintenir dans notre pays l'art de la reliure au niveau élevé où l'avaient porté nos bons relieurs des périodes romantique et Second Empire" (Dubois d'Enghien). With a library stamp. The bookblock is trimmed closely to the letterpress marginal notes, a few times touching a few letters, some minor foxing along the extremities and a restored tear in the last leaf, otherwise in good condition. The binding fine, with only the corners of the boards slightly rubbed.

Its aim is to collect and publish all known ancient Greek inscriptions from the mainland and islands of Greece. Ancient inscriptions are among the most important sources for all areas of research into the ancient world. The first 14 volumes of this Corpus contain an exhaustive collection of Greek inscriptions found in the following regions: Vols. I-III (1873-1895), Athens and Attica; Vols. IV-V (1902-1913), the Peloponnese; Vols. VII-IX (1892-1897), Central Greece; Vols. XI-XII (1895-1927), Aegean Islands; Vol. XIV (1890), Italy and Sicily. As an academic project still continued up to this day, it is important to note that: Volume VI (Inscriptiones Achaeae et Elidis); Vol. VIII (Inscriptiones Delphorum) ; Vol. X (Inscriptiones Epiri, Macedoniae, Thraciae, Scythiae); Vol. XI, part 1; and Vol. XIII (Inscriptiones Cretae insulae) have not yet been published. Vol. XII, part 4 (Inscriptiones Coi, Calymnae, insularum Milesiarum), and part 6 (Inscriptiones Chii et Sami cum Corassiis Icariaque) were not published until 2010, 2012 and 2016 for the 3 fascicules of Vol. XII, part 4; and 2000 and 2003 for the two fascicules of Vol. XII, part 6. Therefore, these seven volumes are evidently not in this collection.Vol. 9, part 2 contains a list of all the books of the Corpus published by Georg Reimer between 1873 and 1908.At the exception for Vol. 11, part 3 which was published in 1927 by De Gruyter, all the other books were published by Georg Reimer.Ex-library copies with stickers at upper front cover and tail of spine of each volume, bookplate on inside of front cover, pocket at rear, and stamp at upper and lower paper edges. Volume one (not the supplement) is a facsimile of the original 1873 edition. All the other volumes are first editions. Water-staining through the first 50 pages of Volume 3, part 1. Text in Latin and Greek. Bindings in overall good+ to very good, interior in good- to good (Vol. 3, part 1) to very good condition (the remaining volumes).
