Diffraction of Cathode Rays by a Thin Film" (Thomson, Paget, Reid) in Nature, Vol. 119, No. 3007, June 18, 1927, p. 890 AND "The Diffraction of Cathode Rays by Thin Films of Platinum (Thomson) in Nature, Vol. 120, No. 3031, December 3, 1927, p. 802

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THOMSON & REID'S NOBEL PRIZE WINNING PAPERS "for the experimental discovery of the diffraction of electrons by crystals" (Nobel Prize Portal). The experiments conducted here "beautifully confirmed the [de Broglie's] wave theory" (Lindau Nobel Laureate Portal). Sir George Paget Thomson was born in 1892, the son of the physicist Sir J. J. Thomson. Paget Thomson studied at Cambridge's Trinity College, later working for a year studying atomic structure with his father; this was followed by work at Cavendish Laboratory until WWI. Following a post at Cambridge, Paget Thomson became Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen. It is at Aberdeen that Paget Thomson began to carry out experiments revealing the phenomena of electron diffraction with thin metal foils and high-voltage electrons. In 1924, the de Broglie hypothesis argued that a wave must be associated with the motion of any material corpuscle. "Reasoning that the effect would be easier to analyze with a solid than with a gaseous target, Thomson asked one of his students, Alexander Reid, to modify an existing apparatus and investigate the scattering of a beam of electrons with energy in the keV range through this celluloid films at normal incidence" (Lindau). In the first paper offered here (June 1927), Reid and Paget Thomson describe "the rings formed when a beam of cathode rays was sent at normal incidence through a thin film of celluloid and struck a photograph plate placed some distance behind the film. These were attributed to a diffraction of the cathode rays by the film, the cathode rays behaving as waves of wave-length h/mv according to de Broglie's theory of wave mechanics, and regularities in the structure of the film, or in the size of the molecules, making it behave as a kind of diffraction grating" (Abstract). In the paper of 1927 December, Paget Thomson (working alone) confirmed and extended his experimentation "to films of gold, aluminium, and of an unknown (probably organic) substance. In particular, the relation that the size of the rings is in all cases inversely as the momentum of the cathode rays is fully confirmed, and the number and size of the rings correspond remarkably with what is to be expected from the known crystalline structure of gold and aluminium, using de Broglie's expression for the wave- length of the cathode rays" (Abstract). "Whereas his father had seen the electron as a particle (and won his Nobel Prize in the process), Paget Thomson demonstrated that it could be diffracted like a wave, a discovery proving the principle of wave-particle duality which had first been posited by de Broglie in the 1920s as what is often dubbed the de Broglie hypothesis" (Strickland, Creators of Quantum Physics, 180). CONDITION & DETAILS: Two issues in original wraps. London: Macmillan. 4to. (10.5 x 7.5 inches; 262 x 188mm). Ex-libris with stamps on front wraps; professionally rebacked at the spine (see scan).       Jonathan Cape, London 1927 - O'Brien A101. This is the large paper edition limited to 315 copies of which 300 were for sale. The size of the volume was dictated by the inclusion of the eleven colour plates that were originally prepared for the legendary 1926 Subscribers edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Altogether there are nineteen plates, the colour plates have tissue guards. Bound in brown buckram boards with dark pigskin spine lettered in gilt. In vg condition with slight rub to top of spine.         The Scattering of Electrons by a Single Crystal of Nickel" in Nature 119, No. 2998, April 16, 1927, pp. 558-560

Macmillan, London 1927 - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PRINTED WRAPS OF DAVISSON & GERMER'S SEMINAL CONFIRMATION OF DE BROGLIE'S HYPOTHESIS ON THE WAVE NATURE OF MATTER. For this work, Davisson and Thomson shared the 1937 Nobel Prize in Physics "for the experimental discovery of the diffraction of electrons by crystals" (Nobel Prize Portal).Fine condition housed in custom clamshell box.Davisson and Germer's 1927 confirmation of de Broglie's hypothesis --the first observation of the wave nature of electrons. de Broglie's wave-particle duality hypothesis and this 1927 confirmation were major steps forward in the experimental confirmation of quantum mechanics. Though Davisson's discovery was somewhat "accidental", it is considered the "definitive confirmation of de Broglie's hypothesis" (L'Annunziata, Radioactivity, 428; Brush, Making 20th Century Science, 224). "The Nobel prize-winning discovery of electron diffraction in 1927 had its starting point in research" begun in 1917 in the engineering department at Western Electric" (Kraugh, Quantum Generations 130). As part of an unrelated lawsuit, Clinton J. Davisson and his assistant, Lester Germer, "began work on the thermionic emission of Wehnelt cathodes. Although the work did not influence the outcome of the suit? it eventually developed in a highly satisfactory and completely unexpected way. In their extended research program, Davisson and Germer were led to study electron emissions from metal surfaces under electron bombardment. In 1924 [their] electron-electron scattering experiments resulted in patterns that Davisson interpreted as arising from the crystal structure of the metal, but nothing further seemed to follow from the experiments. The physicists did not think of electrons as waves. "It was only in the spring of 1926, when Davisson spent a holiday in England, that he happened to learn about de Broglie's ideas of 1924 that electrons might be diffracted by crystals. At that time, Davisson did not know of the new quantum mechanics, but he was told by European colleagues that Schrödinger's theory might be the key to understanding his experiments. In a letter to Richardson, he wrote 'I am still working at Schrödinger and others and believe that I am beginning to get some idea of what it is all about. In particular I think that I know the sort of experiment we should make with our scattering apparatus to test the theory'. "The new direction of the old research program resulted in [this] famous Davisson-Germer experiment proving experimentally de Broglie's formula that", in short, matter also behaves like waves" (ibid). Davisson and Germer's experiment, one they at first did not understand, had definitively demonstrated the wave nature of the electron, thereby confirming de Broglie's hypothesis. Their experiment put wave-particle duality on solid experimental footing and was a major step forward in the development of quantum mechanics. Note that in addition to this issue we also offer the full volume separately. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Macmillan. Complete single issue professionally rebaked at the spine. Small quite faint institutional stamp on the front wrap (see photos). 4to. Bright and clean inside and out. Fine condition. Housed in custom clamshell box. [Attributes: First Edition]

The opposite page shows another view of the Chinese military train, a pair of large mounted guns on an armored train car. To the right is a Chinese officer pointing to a large pierced hole in the train with a foreign engineer peering out from the small window. The train sports the Republic of China flag with a Chinese military unit flag painted on the side. Another view shows a group of abandoned Chinese coffins that went to the dogs; a group of soldiers in garrison caps at attention with fixed bayonets as the officers salute someone near the person taking the photo, some Chinese officers also present. * Next 2 pages show Chinese on a wheel barrow, some Japanese women by a pond in Kimono and a group of British troops from their colonial Empire: blacks, Indians, white trumpeter, Chinese, and others with musical instruments all wear white cork-type pith helmets.         The Stabilization of the Mark

London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd,, 1927. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, front board ruled in blind. With 2 newspaper obituaries for Schacht laid in. Photographic portrait frontispiece. Spine ends and corners bumped and worn, a few minor marks to boards, hinges gently cracked but firm, endpapers tanned, overall a very good copy. First UK edition in English, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author, "To Mr Fred B. Bate, with kind regards", dated 17 November 1927, to the front free endpaper. The recipient is presumably the American broadcaster Frederick Blantford Bate (1886–1970), who was the NBC representative in London at the time. The book was originally published in German in Stuttgart by Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt earlier the same year. The German financial expert is credited with almost single-handedly halting the Weimar Republic's hyperinflation crisis of 1922–3 with the introduction of the Rentenmark—the subject of this book—and thereafter he served as president of the Reichsbank before becoming minister of economics (1934–7) under Hitler's rule. Although charged in 1945 as a war criminal for his early support of Hitler and for his role in enabling Hitler's armament plans, he was acquitted at Nuremberg and went on to establish his own bank and act as an international financial consultant. This copy is accompanied by two brief newspaper articles from the Chicago Daily News and the Chicago Sun-Times, both dated 5 June 1970, on Schacht's life; Schacht had died the day before. Both name Schacht as "the financial wizard who helped Hitler's rise to power".

1920 - 1927. [Architectural projects of the VKhUTEMAS faculty].

Izd. VKHUTEMASa Moskva 1927 - Quarto (24 x 17 cm). XIV, 45 pp. illustrated with 45 photogravures of student architectural drawings. Original photomontage wrappers designed by El Lissitsky; some wear along edges, joints weak, light soiling. Fresh example of the first edition with original wrappers showing Lissitsky's design that ingeniously combined an image of a hand with the compass with innovative use of type. The book includes an introduction by professor N. Dokuchayev and some of the VKhUTEMAS faculty's architectural drawings: renderings of factories, the Palace of Labor, communal housing and other state-sponsored projects, most unrealised. The VKhUTEMAS Workshop had a brief but significant existence, established in 1920 and dissolved in 1930. Its impact both at the time and now is tremendous, as the Workshop furthered the development of constructivism and rationalism in architecture. Created by Vladimir Tatlin in 1920 under the name 'Higher Art and Technical Studios', the school was formed by the merging of the Stroganov School of Industrial Art and the Moscow School of Painting. Abandoning traditional curriculum and encouraging the avant-garde, the school quickly became the leading art school in the post-revolutionary period. Key instructors were Aleksandra Exter, Kazimir Malevich, Lyubov Popova, Alexander Rodchenko and Nadezhda Udaltsova. From a print run of 1000 copies, rare in fine condition considering the fragility of the production. MoMA 702. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Very good with clean, unmarked text. Suzuki was the first great scholar-interpreter of the East to the West. He virtually single-handedly brought the message of Zen, and Buddhism in general, to the West. His writings have sparked a radical change in Western ways of thinking. The historian Arnold Toynbee has predicted that future historians, when looking back on this period, will consider of major significance not events currently viewed as being of lasting importance, but rather an event few people are even aware of: the transmission of Budhhism from East to West. .         The Stabilization of the Mark.

London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1927 - Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, front board ruled in blind. With 2 newspaper obituaries for Schacht laid in. Spine ends and corners bumped and worn, a few minor marks to boards, hinges gently cracked but firm, endpapers tanned, overall a very good copy. Photographic portrait frontispiece. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Designed to capture the beauty and grace of the great medieval psalters and books of hours this masterpiece embraces traditional styles to create a truly modern and unique work of art. This Folio Society limited edition has been produced to exacting standards, from the choice of materials to the traditional craftsmanship of binding the books. This Folio Society limited edition has been produced to exacting standards, from the choice of materials to the traditional craftsmanship of binding the books. The original 1927 cover was an unexciting quarter-binding with patterned paper sides, so we commissioned Neil Gower to create a new design derived from one of Eric Gill's full-page illustrations. The image and titling are blocked in 22-carat gold on full leather. The poem is accompanied by a commentary volume containing essays by Roderick Cave on the history of the Golden Cockerel Press, and Professor Barry Windeatt on the sources, structure and interpretation of Troilus and Criseyde. In the 1920s the Golden Cockerel Press produced three works which are considered amongst the finest achievements of the private press movement, uniting the talents of the typographer Robert Gibbings and artist-engraver Eric Gill. They represented a union between text and illustration that has remained a gold standard for designers ever since. We are now pleased to present the earliest of these masterpieces: Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde. This was the work that marked the start of a fertile creative collaboration between Gill and Gibbings. Although Gill had worked on books for Gibbings before, this was the first project to fire his enthusiasm and inspire his finest work. Gill greatly admired medieval manuscripts (he had begun his working life as a calligrapher) and he wanted to create a modern response to the books of hours and psalters which so delighted him. He developed borders to frame each page with marginal illustrations, and initial letters often printed in red and blue - a very pared-down, but conscious allusion to illuminated manuscripts. For Troilus and Criseyde Gill also created full-page illustrations with which to begin each of the five books of the poem. It reveals the moment at which Gill's ideas were developing from more traditional illustration to a very different kind of page design, and unites the beauty of both forms The story of Troilus and Criseyde is of early medieval origin, and would have been familiar to Chaucer's readers. Troilus is a Trojan prince. Criseyde is the daughter of the traitor Calchas. The pair fall in love, and are brought together by Criseyde's uncle Pandarus. They are blissfully happy until Criseyde is forced to leave Troy. She betrays her vows of fidelity to Troilus and accepts the love of Diomedes, a Greek leader. The poem ends with Troilus' death at the hands of Achilles and his final happiness as he ascends to heaven. A poem of extraordinary power, Troilus and Criseyde is a consummate work of art in both its themes and construction. It is divided into five parts, with the lovers' union taking place exactly halfway through the poem. Its .

The Protocols of Zion].

Doloi Zlo Parizh 1927 - Octavo (24 x 15.7 cm). 64 pp. Original publisher's wrappers including a photogravure. A fine, fresh example of this émigré edition of the most notorious of anti-semitic slanders. The text of the 24 protocols comes from the Nilus' 1911 edition, with addition of an extensive introduction by the publisher, Duke Mikhail Gorchakov. "The Protocols" is an antisemitic hoax purporting to describe a Jewish plan for global domination. It was first published in Russia in 1903, later translated into multiple languages, and disseminated internationally in the early part of the 20th century. The text purports to document the minutes of a late 19th-century meeting of Jewish leaders discussing their goal of global Jewish hegemony by subverting the morals of "gentiles", and by controlling the press and the world's economies. Following the October Revolution, the Protocols of Zion came to be seen in a new light by the Russian right. Viewed through the prism of their anti-semitic beliefs, the predominantly Jewish make-up of the new Bolshevik government appeared to provide material proof of the prophecies that the text had purportedly first revealed. In order to make those links explicit, this émigré edition uses as its cover a photograph of Soviet officials titled, "The Jewish Government in Russia". Books on Jewish and Masonic conspiracies abounded during the early years of Russian emigration, finding fertile ground amongst the more reactionary elements of the community. In reality, these works tend to reveal rather less about the given subject matter than they do about the émigré community's own attempts to make sense of their own unhappy fate. In 1930s it was proved that the source material for the forged text consisted jointly of "Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu", an 1864 political satire by Maurice Joly and a chapter from "Biarritz", an 1868 novel by the antisemitic German novelist Hermann Goedsche. Kharkov, Izdatelstvo "Proarlii", 1927-28. 14 parts, 8vo. All in the original wrappers, printed in two colours, in the original printed (slightly worn) folder. This is a rare survival of the history and documentation of the first 14 party congresses of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (Bolshevik), and their subsumed predecessor organization, the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, edited and partly written by the first offical Party historian, the revolutionary, doctor of history and member of the party since 1898, Lepshinskii. Born in 1868, he had joined Narodnaia Volnia as an 18-year old, and met Lenin in the late 1890s in Siberia. As an active revolutionary he was arrested and banished a few times. In the 1920s he was one of the founders and directors of Istpart (Commission on Party History) and in 1927 he became director of the Historical Museum, in the 1930s director of the Museum of the Revolution in Moscow. About half of the issues are in 'second edition', i.e. second print run, which varied betwen 7000 and 10,000 copies; not much given the size of the Soviet population. Very few libraries hold single reports only, New York Public Library has a later volume of 16 reports published together in book form; not in COPAC.
