Spin and front cover with slight uneven fading of the red morocco, else fine. Folio (c.427 x 310 mm). Borders and initials are designed by Louise Powell and then cut on wood by W. M. Quick and Geo[rge] H. Ford. This is the largest sized book of the Ashendene Press. "Don Quixote" represented a new direction for the Ashendene Press in its typeface and decoration. The new typeface by Emery Walker was based on the font used in the Ulm 1482 edition of Ptolemy and was "a much lighter, more elegant letter than the earlier fount," the denser Subiaco type. "And with the use of this less dictatorial type face, the printer could cast away a little of his restraint in planning whatever lay outside it. So in Don Quixote we find at last an alphabet of open and freely drawn, decorative initial letters, designed by Louise Powell and shadowing something of Kelmscott Press taste from years before." -Franklin, pp. 56-57.

These epoch making volumes were published by Luzac and Company of London for The Eastern Buddhist Society of Kyoto, Japan, in 1927,1933, and 1934. True first editions not to be confused with the Rider reprints published in the 1950's. All bound in the original cloth with spines lettered in gilt. First Series, 1927, x, 423 pages. Contents include Zen As The Chinese Interpretation Of The Doctrine Of Enlightenment; Enlightenment And Ignorance; History Of Zen Buddhism In China, From Bodhi-Dharma To The Sixth Partiarch (Hui-Neng); Satori, And Practical Methods Of Zen Instruction; The Meditation Hall And The Ideals Of Zen Life; The Ten Cow-Herding Pictures. Third Series, 1934, xiv, 392 pages, with thirty-three collotype reproductions of Old Masters (some fold-out). Very good with clean, unmarked text. Suzuki was the first great scholar-interpreter of the East to the West. He virtually single-handedly brought the message of Zen, and Buddhism in general, to the West. His writings have sparked a radical change in Western ways of thinking. The historian Arnold Toynbee has predicted that future historians, when looking back on this period, will consider of major significance not events currently viewed as being of lasting importance, but rather an event few people are even aware of: the transmission of Budhhism from East to West. .         The Stabilization of the Mark.

London: George Allen & Unwin Ltd, 1927 - Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, front board ruled in blind. With 2 newspaper obituaries for Schacht laid in. Spine ends and corners bumped and worn, a few minor marks to boards, hinges gently cracked but firm, endpapers tanned, overall a very good copy. Photographic portrait frontispiece. First UK edition in English, first impression, presentation copy, inscribed by the author, "To Mr Fred B. Bate, with kind regards", dated 17 November 1927, to the front free endpaper. The recipient is presumably the American broadcaster Frederick Blantford Bate (1886–1970), who was the NBC representative in London at the time. The book was originally published in German in Stuttgart by Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt earlier the same year. The German financial expert is credited with almost single-handedly halting the Weimar Republic's hyperinflation crisis of 1922–3 with the introduction of the Rentenmark—the subject of this book—and thereafter he served as president of the Reichsbank before becoming minister of economics (1934–7) under Hitler's rule. Although charged in 1945 as a war criminal for his early support of Hitler and for his role in enabling Hitler's armament plans, he was acquitted at Nuremberg and went on to establish his own bank and act as an international financial consultant. This copy is accompanied by two brief newspaper articles from the Chicago Daily News and the Chicago Sun-Times, both dated 5 June 1970, on Schacht's life; Schacht had died the day before. Both name Schacht as "the financial wizard who helped Hitler's rise to power". [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Designed to capture the beauty and grace of the great medieval psalters and books of hours this masterpiece embraces traditional styles to create a truly modern and unique work of art. This Folio Society limited edition has been produced to exacting standards, from the choice of materials to the traditional craftsmanship of binding the books. This Folio Society limited edition has been produced to exacting standards, from the choice of materials to the traditional craftsmanship of binding the books. The original 1927 cover was an unexciting quarter-binding with patterned paper sides, so we commissioned Neil Gower to create a new design derived from one of Eric Gill's full-page illustrations. The image and titling are blocked in 22-carat gold on full leather. The poem is accompanied by a commentary volume containing essays by Roderick Cave on the history of the Golden Cockerel Press, and Professor Barry Windeatt on the sources, structure and interpretation of Troilus and Criseyde. In the 1920s the Golden Cockerel Press produced three works which are considered amongst the finest achievements of the private press movement, uniting the talents of the typographer Robert Gibbings and artist-engraver Eric Gill. They represented a union between text and illustration that has remained a gold standard for designers ever since. We are now pleased to present the earliest of these masterpieces: Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde. This was the work that marked the start of a fertile creative collaboration between Gill and Gibbings. Although Gill had worked on books for Gibbings before, this was the first project to fire his enthusiasm and inspire his finest work. Gill greatly admired medieval manuscripts (he had begun his working life as a calligrapher) and he wanted to create a modern response to the books of hours and psalters which so delighted him. He developed borders to frame each page with marginal illustrations, and initial letters often printed in red and blue - a very pared-down, but conscious allusion to illuminated manuscripts. For Troilus and Criseyde Gill also created full-page illustrations with which to begin each of the five books of the poem. It reveals the moment at which Gill's ideas were developing from more traditional illustration to a very different kind of page design, and unites the beauty of both forms The story of Troilus and Criseyde is of early medieval origin, and would have been familiar to Chaucer's readers. Troilus is a Trojan prince. Criseyde is the daughter of the traitor Calchas. The pair fall in love, and are brought together by Criseyde's uncle Pandarus. They are blissfully happy until Criseyde is forced to leave Troy. She betrays her vows of fidelity to Troilus and accepts the love of Diomedes, a Greek leader. The poem ends with Troilus' death at the hands of Achilles and his final happiness as he ascends to heaven. A poem of extraordinary power, Troilus and Criseyde is a consummate work of art in both its themes and construction. It is divided into five parts, with the lovers' union taking place exactly halfway through the poem. Its .

        The Protocols of Zion].

Doloi Zlo Parizh 1927 - Octavo (24 x 15.7 cm). 64 pp. Original publisher's wrappers including a photogravure. A fine, fresh example of this émigré edition of the most notorious of anti-semitic slanders. The text of the 24 protocols comes from the Nilus' 1911 edition, with addition of an extensive introduction by the publisher, Duke Mikhail Gorchakov. "The Protocols" is an antisemitic hoax purporting to describe a Jewish plan for global domination. It was first published in Russia in 1903, later translated into multiple languages, and disseminated internationally in the early part of the 20th century. The text purports to document the minutes of a late 19th-century meeting of Jewish leaders discussing their goal of global Jewish hegemony by subverting the morals of "gentiles", and by controlling the press and the world's economies. Following the October Revolution, the Protocols of Zion came to be seen in a new light by the Russian right. Viewed through the prism of their anti-semitic beliefs, the predominantly Jewish make-up of the new Bolshevik government appeared to provide material proof of the prophecies that the text had purportedly first revealed. In order to make those links explicit, this émigré edition uses as its cover a photograph of Soviet officials titled, "The Jewish Government in Russia". Books on Jewish and Masonic conspiracies abounded during the early years of Russian emigration, finding fertile ground amongst the more reactionary elements of the community. In reality, these works tend to reveal rather less about the given subject matter than they do about the émigré community's own attempts to make sense of their own unhappy fate. In 1930s it was proved that the source material for the forged text consisted jointly of "Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu", an 1864 political satire by Maurice Joly and a chapter from "Biarritz", an 1868 novel by the antisemitic German novelist Hermann Goedsche. Istoriia VKP (b) v sezdakh.

Kharkov, Izdatelstvo "Proarlii", 1927-28. 14 parts, 8vo. All in the original wrappers, printed in two colours, in the original printed (slightly worn) folder. This is a rare survival of the history and documentation of the first 14 party congresses of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (Bolshevik), and their subsumed predecessor organization, the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party, edited and partly written by the first offical Party historian, the revolutionary, doctor of history and member of the party since 1898, Lepshinskii. Born in 1868, he had joined Narodnaia Volnia as an 18-year old, and met Lenin in the late 1890s in Siberia. As an active revolutionary he was arrested and banished a few times. In the 1920s he was one of the founders and directors of Istpart (Commission on Party History) and in 1927 he became director of the Historical Museum, in the 1930s director of the Museum of the Revolution in Moscow. About half of the issues are in 'second edition', i.e. second print run, which varied betwen 7000 and 10,000 copies; not much given the size of the Soviet population. Very few libraries hold single reports only, New York Public Library has a later volume of 16 reports published together in book form; not in COPAC.

        F. Wagner-Poltrock [Unique Extr-Illustrated Family Copy]

Berlin, Leipzig und Wien: Friedrich Ernst Hübsch, 1927. Hardcover. g to vg. Quarto. xxv, 78pp., plus 36 original photographs and four architectural plans mounted to 20 privately bound heavy stock leaves. Original yellow cloth with reverse yellow design and lettering on printed brown surface of cover and spine. Tan endpapers girding original illustrations on inside covers. Introduction by Eugen Kurt Fischer, a journalist, radio broadcaster and author on the theory and history of radio plays, and one of the pioneers of German radio. The architect Friedrich Wagner-Poltrock (1883-1961) was a government building officer in Chemnitz from 1914-1925. In 1925 Poltrock-Wagner opened his own architecture office in Chemnitz and went on to become one of the most important architects helping to shape the modern architecture of the city, most prominently with his Industrieschule Chemnitz (Industrial School), Transformatorenwerk Chemnitz-Mitte (Transformer Factory) and the Strumpffabrik Götze Oberlungwitz (Stocking Factory). The "Neue Werkkunst" volume is one of a series of publications on contemporary architecture with representatives of the new architecture as well as conservative architects. This volume contains alltogether 50 original b/w photographs mounted on privately bound in separate leaves, including vintage prints (9 1/4 x 6 3/4") of Wagner-Poltrock projects mentioned above, some with handwritten captions, reproductions of architectural drawings and plans, a photograph of Wagner-Poltrock and his wife Elisabeth mounted to the free front endpaper with a handwritten description by their daughter Gudula underneath (my parents Friedrich Wagner-Poltrock, Anna Elisabeth geb. Wildeman on December 6, 1960, her 70th birthday, a few weeks before father's death on February 5th, 1961), the obituary mounted to the tan back endpaper as well as laid in newspaper articles. Handwritten captions for original photographs include "our cabin on the Keilberg in the Ore Mountains" or "Haus Friedrich in Burkardtsdorf in the Ore Mountains, 1931" and on the side of this photograph showing the Wagner-Poltock house "The girl with the braids am I, Gudula, 7-8 years old."In addition to the two portrait photographs the book contains- seven of the hunting tavern in Fürstenbrunn, 1930, - five photographs of the Goetze Stocking Factory, 1929, (one of them with handwritten caption in pencil on verso, probably by Wagner-Poltrock himself, "Bild zeigt: Alte u. Neubau ... Neue Fabrick mit Neubau 1927, Verbindung beider Gebäude durch Turm).- eleven of the Industrial School Chemnitz (plus four architectural drawings of the school), 1928, - three depicting the Transformer Factory, 1929, - ten photographs of residential buildings, including Landhaus Otto, 1928, - four of the Diesterweg School, including two of architectural models, 1928-1930, - one bowling alley, - five reproductions of sketches of Prague,- one public sculpture, 1933, and - one unidentified buildingThe versatility of Wagner-Poltrock's interests and projects is astonishing. It encompasses schools, churches, bridges, high risers, water towers, country homes, hunting lodges, castles, factories, streets. gardens, a stadium, even a cemetery was among his plans. Among the staff of his firm were Alfred Gerstenberg, Heinz Götze, Laurentinus Hinrichsen, Robert Jüttner, Friedrich Keller-Niederlenz, Herbert Neumeister, Waldemar Nödelchen, Erich Loebell, Gottfried Ruckdeschel, Hanns Wolfgang Scharre und Max Werner. The plates of the original publication illustrate the wide palette of architectural works by Wagner-Poltrock and feature sepia toned architectural photographs, one of them credited to Werner Kump, reproductions of architectural drawings and plans, scenic sketches and watercolors. An extraordinary view of the work of this influential architect.Compare to the original publication this rebound copy differs in the the following ways: illustrated endpapers, front endpaper with publisher's logo, half-title and copyright page on verso are missing and replaced with free endpapers and mounted photographs. Page xxvi listing engineers and architects working in Wagner-Poltrock's office, as mentioed above, is covered with an original photograph of the Industrieschule. On the following page the printed word Abbildungen (images) is covered with a pasted down original photograph of Landhaus Otto and loose. Text in German. Binding with light wear along edges and lightly rubbed. Cloth at spine separated at back joint, probably the result of adding mentioned additional plates. Board still firmly attached. Wagner-Poltrock with address inked to front tan endpaper, address crossed out with pencil and new address plus Gudula Soergel geb. Wagner-Poltrock penciled below. Trapezoid shaped artistic b/w exlibris glued to inside front and back cover reading Polier (Supervisor of a architectural project) and Architekt. One leaf, plate one and two is missing and replaced with loose leave containing original prints and plates 75-78 rebound out of order before plates 73 and 74. Obituary with crease at foredge. Considering the personalized additions requiring disassembly and rebinding of the book this copy is in good to very good condition.

The Story of My Experiments with Truth.

Ahmedabad: Navajivan Press, 1927-9.. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK-FORM, also the FIRST ENGLISH LANGUAGE PRINTING, translated from the Gujarati. Octavo, 2 volumes COMPLETE, with sepia portraits of the author in each. Pale green linen-covered boards, blocked in dark blue, in original grey dust-wrappers blocked in the same fashion, priced at 5/8 rupees to spine, edges untrimmed. Some very light and occasional spotting, books and jackets lightly handled and edgeworn, spine a little toned to volume one. There is none of the inherent browning of the endpapers and the contents are remarkably fresh. Both volumes contain a contemporary gift note to Scottish academic Stanley W. Davies, from the legal historian and author Mahtabsing Sahibsing Shahani of Delhi. The fact that both volumes when new were sent to a more favourable climate would account for this exceptional survival. This two-volume work is an inestimable rarity, essentially unheard of in decent jackets; the present example is near fine. Mahatma Gandhi [1869-1948), the inspirational major political and spiritual leader of India. His autobiography was serialized in Gujarati in the weekly magazine Navjivan, 1925-28 and is collected in book-form as two volumes, being published two years apart. Occasionally mis-described as 'Holland', it was in fact bound in 'khadi' cloth, a homespun linen that Gandhi adopted as a symbol of Indian struggle against the British, this material also being used for the traditional clothing of the printers who produced this book, and seemingly a delicacy to the insect life of the Indian subcontinent. It has long been described as a tan colour binding, yet the true shade is a fugitive pale green as seen here- even this fine copy has slightly sunned to beige/tan at the extremities. The two-volume work is uncommon in any condition (7 at auction in 35 years) and has, to my knowledge never been encountered in collectable condition in jacket; just two wrappered copies are recorded at auction, -one an ex-library set, suitably worn and another 'frayed' example around volume two only.

        Zhelezni ikoni [Iron icons]

Novo iskustvo [New art], Sofia 1927 - Original publisher's wrappers, 12mo - 177/130mm., 46+2 p. (See Domenico Jacono, Bulgarian modernism 1919-1934, N 37, p.47). First edition of this program poetical book, printed in the same publishing house where were issued Lamar's magazine "Novis". The once in this book with revolutionary verses is the new religion with their new icons - hammered (not just made) from iron. The woodcut by Max Metzger (see Ruja Marinska, 20ties in the Bulgarian art, p. 126) on the front cover visualize the essence of these poems: The opened (without walls) temple, ringing bell and speech - this is the constructivist image of the new religion. The traditional icon is replaced by the title of the book - the image of the saint (saints) was replaced by the words of revolution. Under the arch we see a symbol of a musical note depicted the move - it's ringing the bells of new knowledge. The new icons are not silent anymore, they speak loudly, they are iron words. But. A little more distant glance will recognize a male face with left blinking eye. More precisely - a stylized portrait of a certain tragic figure of that era. The letters of the title "Iron Icons" closed lower half of this portrait, where the mouth is suppose to be. From this perspective, already overlapping geometric shapes below will distinguish black boots. In the heel of the left boot, in white circle we can see "X" - that is the Bulgarian letter for "H". Honestly, we prefer the first interpretation (M. Dimitrov). About this copy. Very good at all with a few small shortcomings. Slightly uneven outlines and rounded corners, two missing parts at the edges of the spine (about 1 cm. each). The pictures shows real colors etc. Our images aren't splendid, but are true. We stay available for any question and extra pictures on request. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        The etchings of Norman Lindsay

London : Constable & Co., 1927. Folio, gilt-lettered blue buckram (spine faded, one corner slightly bumped), top edge gilt, 45 leaves of plates with accompanying title leaf, each a fine photogravure reproduction of a Norman Lindsay etching, occasional foxing. Limited to 129 copies of which 120 were for sale, signed and numbered by Norman Lindsay. A de luxe edition of 31 copies with the original etching 'Your Fate' was also issued. The etchings of Norman Lindsay, published in lavish large format, was admired by Lindsay himself 'as a facsimile perfect as reproduction can be' (from a 1938 letter to Andrew Watt), and '[it] remains one of the most tantalising collections of his work' (BLOOMFIELD, Lin. The complete etchings of Norman Lindsay, Odana 1998, p 65). Lindsay's popularity in the 1920s had risen meteorically, so that the very restricted print run of only 160 copies over two editions fell far short of the market's demands. The book sold out a month prior to publication, dissapointing many prominent collectors including Howard Hinton in New England. Only a handful of copies made it to Austraila, due to it selling out in London, as well as the fact that Australian customs held the two copies sent to Gill's Fine Art Society on the grounds that it was an immoral publication. Bloomfield notes that many copies have been broken to sell the plates: as early as 1938 the reproductions were selling for 21 shilling each, prompting her to observe that 'The Etchings of Norman Lindsay has become the rarest of any of Norman's books'. This statement is supported by a quote from George Mackaness, who wrote in 1965: '... within my knowledge only one copy of this has ever appeared in any Australian or British bookseller's catalogue or at auction'. A handful of copies have been sold since then, but The etchings of Norman Lindsay remains one of his most sumptuous and rare large scale publications.
