Art Notes Bound issues 1-85 complete

1896, October onward to June 1927. 7 Volumes bound in crumbling thin flexible leather. Profusely illustrated in bw. All edges are gilt. This stunning ensemble includes the issues of Art Notes bound as follows: 1-12, 13-24, 25-36, 37-48, 49-60, 61-73, 74-85. These small publications from Macbeth Gallery in New York are incredibly scarce. Macbeth Gallery was the pre-eminent dealer for American Art in NYC beginning in the 1890s. They published these small booklets to both promote their stock and to educate their customers. They are filled with anecdotal and ephemeral information that will not be found elsewhere. In 23 years, this is the first set of these I have had, and likely the last I will see. Covers are poor. Contents are VG+.

Autograph Postcard Signed to Adila Aranyi, November, 1902

CARDS. Budapest, 1902. 5.5 x 3.75 inch postcard, addressed to Adila Aranyi in Bartok's hand. Autograph postcard from Bartok to the violinist Adila Aranyi dated November 27, 1902 discussing his violin arrangement of Strauss's Don Quixote, 3rd variation. With the following message in Bartok's microscript handwriting (translated from the Hungarian): "In Budapest, on Thursday... I strongly object to the statement that I am the winning party! Anyhow we shall still discuss this tomorrow. Thank you very much for the lovely card. Please do not be overly alarmed by the numerous Strauss-cards. Be consoled knowing that  ?  there?s more to come. By the way, I think that the variation of Sancho Panza is not difficult, and so maybe we can rehearse that, too, tomorrow. Greetings till we meet again from B2." The postcard shows a photograph of Verlag von Hofphotograph J. Lowy, Vien, 1902. One of many postcards Bartok wrote to Aranyi during the period of 1902-1905, a period in which, according to Bartok's biographer Benjamin Suchoff, "he had fallen in love with the lively Adila." - Suchoff, Bela Bartok - Life and Work, p. 33. This postcard was written two days after the manuscript postcard of Bartok's Strauss arrangement of Don Quixote, 3rd variation, which now resides at the Pierpont Morgan Library (OCLC 270561619). A wonderful piece of correspondence from early in Bartok's career. About fine condition overall, with some normal age-related tanning. Please contact us for additional pictures or information. . Fine. 1927.

        Now We Are Six

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1927. Octavo. Original red cloth, title to spine gilt, vignette to covers gilt, pink illustrated endpapers, top edge gilt. With the dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard. Spine gently rolled and lightly toned, minor rubbing to extremities; an excellent copy in the unusually bright jacket with browned spine and tiny nicks to extremities. First edition, first impression, with the ownership inscription of Marjorie Shepard, Ernest Shepard's niece, on the half-title. Following the success of When We Were Very Young Milne began planning a second book of poetry for children. In a January 1926 letter to his brother Ken he included it as number one in a list of "things which ought to be done": "A book of verses (about 15 done to date) to appear in 1927 or 1928" (Thwaite p. 293). By the time that Winnie-the-Pooh was published in late 1926 half the poems for this third book were already complete. Published on 13 October 1927 in an edition of 50,000 regular trade copies, it took only two months for Now We Are Six to eclipse the sales records of the previous two books. Full of Milne's charming verse, this collection is also notable for including many illustrations of Pooh, Piglet, and the other nursery toys, even when uncalled for by the poems.

        [Photo Album]: Camp Lenape

Pennsylvania. 1927. Oblong small quarto measuring 8" x 12". String-tied flexible felt wrappers with "LC" stitched to the front wrapper. Contains 88 sepia toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs measuring between 2" x 3" and 3.5" x 6" with some captions. Rubbing and small chips thus very good with near fine photographs.A photo album and scrapbook kept by New York native, Henry L. Priestley ,during the summer of 1927 which he spent at Camp Lenape in Pennsylvania. The camp was on the banks of Fairview Lake which was home to a number of Y.M.C.A. and Scout camps beginning at the turn of the century. Priestley was a part of a boy's camp which spent the summer of 1927 horseback riding, swimming, learning rope tricks, and dressing like cowboys and Indians. The album opens with pages of camp friends listing their name, birthday, address, and a "special thought" about Henry. Some o fht ethoughts include "may you grow to be a great big hero," "the Rough Rider," and "good boy Hank." These are written over two pages, back and front, and contain the names of 54 boys and every space is filled. Another section in the album is a space for "Social Events," which includes a line reading, "had the Lenape Wild West Show, in which I was a settler who helped defend the fort." Another entry reads, "we had Water Sports Day, in which I entered the swimming races and came in last." Priestley also illustrated the album with a few drawings of bull riders and horses. The photographs show the boys at the camp, their cabins, and the surrounding landscape showing the wooded area and lake. The boys are seen basket weaving, fishing, canoeing and a minstrel show which featured young men in blackface. To keep in line with the Native American name of the camp numerous photos show boys in head dresses or cowboy outfits and counselors dressed similarly including one captioned "Chief Owaneco." Another pastime of the camp was shooting and a photo shows boys laying on their belly participating in target practice. A nice collection of photographs depicting a boy's camp in the 1920s. .

        Vingt-Cinq Costumes pour le Théâtre

Paris: Bloch and Meynial, 1927. Limited First Edition. Heavy Wrappers. . Very Good Plus/Good. No. 185 of 275 copies. 4to. 32 by 24 cm. 25 tipped-in pochoir costume plates by Barbier. Lettered tissue guards. Colas 218. The artwork is all dated to the early post-World War One period, into the early 1920s. Captured here is the fantasy spun by the costuming, so at odds with the parsimonious theatrical zeitgeist of the present when it seems so much of classic theater and opera is willfully updated to the unglamorous present day. Not that the costumes here are entirely unrelated to the then contemporary styles -- one can discern the cross-fertilization of costuming with fashion effortlessly, though, through Barbier's fluent presentation. Barbier focuses on the escapist element of theater, and his renderings usher us on this excursion. The plays represented include works by Rostand and Hugo, among others. Original pictorial wrappers. Closed tear of joints by extremities, with the longer tear at the base (about 6 cm in length). Glassine dust jacket mostly intact, but with several tears and chips, especially by the lower portion of the rear cover, and then by the spine extremities and neighboring joints. Frontis portrait of Barbier has flattened cornered crease. Otherwise, the plates, most importantly, are very clean and bright.

La danza come un modo di essere. Prefazione di Marco Ramperti. Ventisette fotografie fuori testo.

Milan: Casa Editrice I. R. A. G., 25 April 1927 - Folio. Original red morocco, titles gilt to spine and front, gilt design to front board, moiré silk endpapers. Spine an corners a little worn, some faint spotting to the first and final blank, small tear to the lower margin of first blank, very good condition overall. 10 large photographic prints mounted on black card, and 16 smaller photographic images on 8 plates at the rear. True first edition, copy number 1 of 225 copies on handmade paper signed by Ruskaja, this copy specially bound and additionally inscribed on the first blank, "A Benito Mussolini, ommagio di devozione e di infinita ammirazione, Jia Ruskaja, 11 Julio 1927, Roma". La danza come un modo di essere was republished the following year by Casa Editrice Aples, in a larger, though still limited, edition of 1,500 copies. That edition is now uncommon, but the first is truly rare; we can find no example of the 1927 edition in library holdings worldwide, nor any recorded at auction. The red morocco binding here is likely to be unique to Mussolini's special presentation copy. Jia Ruskaja, born Evgenija Borisenko (1902–1970), whose stage name simply means "I am Russian", was the daughter of a White Russian officer. She fled Russia in 1918 just after the October Revolution. After studies in Geneva and a failed marriage to an Englishman in Constantinople, she settled in Rome and devoted herself to dance. She had her debut on 4 June 1921, and swiftly became a prominent proponent of the "free dance" movement introduced by Isadora Duncan, dancing at the Teatro degli Indipendenti throughout the 1920s before opening her own ballet school in Milan at the Teatre dal Verme in 1929. By 1932 she was promoted to the charge of the Teatro della Scala ballet school, and in 1940 her own school was recognised by the state as the Regia Scuola di Danza (from 1948 named the Academia Nazionale di Danza), for which she acted as founding director until her death. "There is little doubt that the frequent visits and the presence in Italy of companies and personalities such as Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, Isadora Duncan, Ida Rubinstein, Bella Hunter, Mary Wigman and Jia Ruskaja, channelled the interest of Italian theatre-goers away from such a culturally sterile form of national choreography. Some of those 'innovative' foreign inputs, moreover, were soon destined to become official manifestations of the Fascist regime's politically pre-determined culture. The allegedly negative effect of Fascist culture on the Italian ballet tradition is much debated among Italian dance scholars and has yet to be fully ascertained. Some claim that, by supporting other forms of dance such as the 'free' and neo-classically inspired style promoted by Jia Ruskaja, and by forcing eminent supporters of the ballet to move abroad, Mussolini's regime gave a deadly blow to what was left of the once-acclaimed art form. Others point out that it was under the Fascist regime that two important ballet institutions were created in Rome, such as the Opera Ballet School (1928) and the Regia Scola di Danza (Royal School of Dance) (1940)" (Grau). This is a compelling association copy for the history of dance in Italy, connecting one of its most modernising proponents to the head of state, and revealing the manner by which parts of futurist culture was promoted under Mussolini's fascist regime.         First Crossing of the Polar Sea.

New York: George H. Doran Company, 1927. First edition of this classic work. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by Lincoln Ellsworth on the front free endpaper, "To Mrs. Spencer H. Smith, with the kindest regards of Lincoln Ellsworth 9 Nov. 1927." In near fine condition with light rubbing. Desirable signed and inscribed. The first expedition to reach the geographic South Pole was led by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. He and four others arrived at the pole on 14 December 1911,[n 1] five weeks ahead of a British party led by Robert Falcon Scott as part of the Terra Nova Expedition. Amundsen and his team returned safely to their base, and later learned that Scott and his four companions had died on their return journey. Amundsen's initial plans had focused on the Arctic and the conquest of the North Pole by means of an extended drift in an icebound ship. He obtained the use of Fridtjof Nansen's polar exploration ship Fram, and undertook extensive fundraising. Preparations for this expedition were disrupted when, in 1909, the rival American explorers Frederick Cook and Robert E. Peary each claimed to have reached the North Pole. Amundsen then changed his plan and began to prepare for a conquest of the South Pole; uncertain of the extent to which the public and his backers would support him, he kept this revised objective secret. When he set out in June 1910, he led even his crew to believe they were embarking on an Arctic drift, and revealed their true Antarctic destination only when Fram was leaving their last port of call, Madeira. Amundsen made his Antarctic base, which he named "Framheim", in the Bay of Whales on the Great Ice Barrier. After months of preparation, depot-laying and a false start that ended in near-disaster, he and his party set out for the pole in October 1911. In the course of their journey they discovered the Axel Heiberg Glacier, which provided their route to the polar plateau and ultimately to the South Pole. The party's mastery of the use of skis and their expertise with sledge dogs ensured rapid and relatively trouble-free travel. Other achievements of the expedition included the first exploration of King Edward VII Land and an extensive oceanographic cruise. The expedition's success was widely applauded, though the story of Scott's heroic failure overshadowed its achievement in the United Kingdom. Amundsen's decision to keep his true plans secret until the last moment was criticized by some. Recent polar historians have more fully recognized the skill and courage of Amundsen's party; the permanent scientific base at the pole bears his name, together with that of Scott.

Pag. OBrosch.
