London: The Readers Library Publishing Company Ltd., n.d.. [1927]. original decorated red-brown boards, front and spine panels stamped in gold.. Old gift inscription on front free endpaper. Text paper tanned,. hairline cracks along inner hinges (still sound and tight), small. damp stain to bottom edge of rear cover, a good copy in good first. printing dust jacket (with wraparound illustration by Aubrey Hammond). that does not list METROPOLIS on the rear flap, with light wear at. edges, two small chip from bottom edge of front panel, with internal. tape mend, and some fading to green ink on front panel. (#134626). First edition in English. The first printing without mention of this title in list of Readers Library books on page [7]. Novelization of the screenplay by Fritz Lang and Thea von Harbou of Lang's 1926 UFA film which was about three hours long in it's original seventeen-reel version. "Though often described as the first SF epic of the cinema, this famous German film -- of which no complete version now exists -- has just as much in common with the cinema of the Gothic. Though set in a future visually emphasized by towering buildings and vast brooding machines, the city of Metropolis has an underworld dark and medieval in atmosphere ... The story of METROPOLIS is trite and its politics ludicrously simplistic; but these flaws cannot detract from the sheer visual power of the film -- a combination of the high Expressionistic sets (the work of art directors Otto Hunte, Erich Kettelhut and Karl Vollbrecht) and Lang's direction ... METROPOLIS, which was extremely expensive and not a financial success, almost bankrupted the studio that made it (UFA). The film was cut almost as soon as it was released, and -- still in the 1920s -- shortened yet more radically in the UK and USA. Even recently restored archival versions are half an hour shorter than the original." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 804-5. C. Later 1920s Collection of Fine Portrait Photography of Natalie Hays Hammond By Soichi Sunami, Peter A. Juley & Son, Ira L. Hill Studio, Ames & Others

New York - London, 1927. Collection of fine art portrait photographs of Natalie Hays Hammond (1904-1985) heiress daughter of mining engineer and speculator-developer of mining properties John Hays Hammond who became a painter, Broadway set and costume designer, author, and patron of the arts; includes: portrait by Soichi Sunami (1885-1971) with his blindstamp at bottom right and with his studio stamp on back, 7" x 9 1/2" approx., printed on glossy stock to the edge of the paper, light edgewear, very striking and with a somewhat 'noir' feel to the image, shadows and softening of the clothing, upturned collar, very good-we speculate that Hammond's friendship and work with the famous dancer Martha Graham may have been the 'meeting point' for Sunami and Hammond - the photographer known for his Graham portraiture; Peter A. Juley & Son, the leading fine arts photography firm in New York from 1906 to 1975 and perhaps most famously known for their portraits of artists at work - as this portrait, matte finish in sepia tones 7 1/4" x 9" approx., with studio imprint on back and with the signature in pen lower right 'Juley N Y', of Hammond at studio drawing board, concentrating with pen in hand. A bit of fade towards edges, line of old mount residue on back of cardstock, nevertheless atmospheric, good plus; (3) images taken at Ira L. Hill's Studio, N.Y.C. Ira L. Hill (1877-1947) eccentric and prolific society, fashion and Broadway acting portrait photographer - each with the studio stamp and one with the handwritten 'Natalie Hays Hammond' identified, all on glossy stock, printed to the edge. All different poses, 2 differing clothing outfits, (a) 9" x 11 3/4", light wear, few scratches & tiny abrasions, one corner chipped away, good, (b) 9 3/8" x 11 3/4", light wear, few tiny edge abrasions, very good and (c) 9 1/2" x 12 1/2", top two corners with old crease lines, some other tiny flecking in the body of the image, good; A medium size child portrait of a very young Natalie being held fondly by her father John Hays Hammond (1855-1936) "...the best-known mining engineer in the world..." after his stupendously successful exploits working with Cecil Rhodes in the development of mines in South Africa (DAB) and the source of his daughter's later fortune, in sepia tones gum print, pencil signed Ames below right, image 4 3/4" x 7" approx., hinged at side to heavy paper stock mount, approx. 8 3/4" x 12 1/2" image fine, mount with a bit of edge, tips wear, old mounting hinge residue on back of mount paper, very good; light wear; A photographic portrait of "Miss Natalie Hammond dau. of Mr. & Mrs. John Hays Hammond of Washington marble portrait in Royal Academy exhibition 1926 by Cecil Thomas Permission given to reproduce (signed) Cecil Thomas" by the sculptor, evidently commissioned by the family for the work. 6" x 8" approx., glossy stock, some minor edge, tips wear and soiling on back, very good; and (2) portraits that are unidentified as to studio: 9" x 13" approx. size for both, done in gold tones reminiscent of the best of Arnold Genthe portrait work, subtle lighting effects, soft tones and yet very dramatically posed and taken - some edge, tips wear and corner-creasing, one with two closed edge-tears - with all faults still superb images and perhaps the best-taken of the lot; all in all, a very good group of some of the best of the photo portraiture work taken by well-known society and art photographers of the time; especially interesting to have the ability to compare the same subject taken through the eyes of several master studios' work; N.H. Hammond's former home in North Salem, New York is now part of the Hammond Museum and Japanese Stroll Garden in that community. . Good.

The binding firm was carried on by successive members of the family into the 1930s. A Collection of Motivational Poster Cards (Poster Sales Letters)

C.J. Howard. Chicago. C.J. Howard. 1927. Collection is contained in original imprinted cardboard C.J. Howard packaging box. 7"x4.75" when closed (horizontal folding card).7"x9.5" when opened. Each card presents a striking Art Deco multicolored lithograph and various coloured borders and decorations printed upon folded heavy card stock. Early in the 1920s Charles Mather, who worked for his family’s Chicago printing house, the Mather Company, took an idea brought to him by one of the firm’s salesmen, Charles Howard Rosenfeld. What Rosenfeld proposed was a series of posters whose focus was to give workers incentive to work better and to work harder. Mather called these prints, “Constructive Organization Posters.” These posters were made to be placed on office and factory walls and were expected to inspire workers to do their best. Mather sold his posters by subscription and produced more than 300 varieties between 1923 and 1929.In 1925 Rosenfeld and another employee broke from Mather to form their own company, the C. J. Howard Company, to sell incentive cards to be displayed on desks in a re-useable easel. These cards and posters were printed as multicolored lithographs to produce easily readable images accompanied by tagline messages promoting such admirable qualities as teamwork, punctuality, loyalty, and safety." -Rockwell Museum "At the dawn of the 20th century, managers had been skeptical about using visual images as communication tools because their appeals to the emotions contradicted prevailing Protestant notions of self-discipline. By deploying motivational posters and illustrated booklets managers began to loosen their former dependence on rationalism and to explore the potential of aesthetics to regulate the emotional environment. In doing so they honed their abilities to define the “correct” forms of selfhood in the factory and to habituate workers to the kinds of values and behaviors that managers deemed appropriate and necessary for the harmonization of workplace relations. This collection represents Motivational Aesthetics- the design rationales and sales techniques of the Syndicate’s two main companies, Mather (which sold motivational posters) and C.J. Howard (which sold motivational booklets for foremen) as a case study of how managers and motivational specialists honed their abilities to cultivate workplace cooperation in the 1920s. Drawing from recent studies of emotion and affect omne may interpret the post-World War I factory as a realm of aesthetic training where habits and dispositions were actively shaped."-David Gray Cards are in Very Fine, pristine condition, retaining their original clarity and luminesence. Box presents repaired splitting to both horizontal sides and various minor rubbing - still quite functional and bright. A stunning and complete gathering of an important component of American Business,Labor and Advertising history. Only one other extant complete collection found - in the holdings of the Smithsonian Institution.

All works by Tsiolkovski are rare and important.Tsiolkovski was a pioneer in the field of experimental aerodynamics; by, among other things, building one of the world's first wind-tunnels, he derived a number of highly important laws of aerodynamics and is one of the founders of modern aerodynamics. In 1921 he came up with the idea of making a vehicle of transportation that was carried on a cushion of air. It is in this work he develops the idea (see D.S.B. XIII: 484).The father of modern rocketry, Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovski (1857-1935), is probably most widely known for his works on rocket propulsion, however his contributions to several fields of science have been immense and of exceedingly seminal character. Deafened at the age of nine and as a consequence thereof unable to go to school, he was forced to learn everything on his own hand. His father, a forester, was fond of scientific experiments, and though not wealthy, he had books on science and natural history. Tsiolkovski began by reading all books he could find on these subjects and as a consequence was able to construct quite complicated devices for measuring distances and many other things. Having seen how gifted his son was, his father sent him to Moscow, where Tsiolkovski spend all three years in libraries, receiving no teaching but his own, but still succeeding in taking a degree in physics from the university. T. can thus be seen as a purely self-taught man. After Moscow he settled in the small city of Borovskoye, where he taught physics at a school, spending all his spare time conducting experiments and writing about them. He devoted his intellect mainly to three scientific problems of the greatest importance at the time: The aeroplane, the (long-range) rocket and the all metal dirigible. Self-taught as he was and unable to come in touch with new publications in his fields of interest, he began with nothing and made all necessary calculations himself. Calculations and experiments were always at the base of his scientific works, and no conclusions were derived from intuition and guesswork. He was the first in the world to solve numerous problems concerning his three main interests, but unable to be recognized by the tsar-regime and considered, at best, a dreamer and a utopian, the struggle for his inventions was long and hard. Aged 24 he was the first in the world to formulate the possibility of applying the principle of reactive motion for flight in a vacuum, thus presenting a simple plan for a spaceship. He established the possibility of space travel by means of rockets, and is thus called the father of rocketry. He is also called the father of the all-metal dirigible. He is the first to propose and state that liquid fuel is necessary for spaceflight. He was the first in the world to make calculations for the air-jet and turbo-prop-planes, and it is in his works we find the most complete elaboration of the theory of rocket propulsion for many years to come. "In his works on rocket dynamics Tsiolkovsky, the first in the history of science, calculated the efficiency of the rocket and pointed out the advantages of rocket motors at high velocities." (Kosmodemyansky, Moscow, 1956, p. 69). T. saw it as necessary step for mankind to explore and inhabit outer space and nothing could prevent him from working on the possibilities of this; in short, among many other things, we owe to him the fundamental principles of rocket dynamics. After the Revolution T. became a member of the Academy, was allotted a personal pension in 1921, and became able to devote himself entirely to his scientific work. Now his contemporaries finally saw him as the founder of a new domain of human knowledge, a new science, he was, and he was awarded the Red Banner of Labour Order for outstanding services to his country

Howard Beach and Ozone Park: Vol. 18 of 29 Atlases of Insurance Maps for Queens

Sanborn Map Company New York: Sanborn Map Company, 1927. hardcover. very good. Atlas. Lithograph with original hand coloring. Massive elephant folio. Decorative calligraphic titles, indices, and key maps. Contains a set of 74 maps along with changes recorded on paste-on correction slips through 1973. Quarter leather binding with gilt title on front and spine. This volume includes Shore Parkway (Belt Parkway) and Conduit Avenue intersection and the Aqueduct Racetrack. Maps also show the original Spring Creek Basin reaching inland as far as Conduit Avenue, and the original shoreline along Jamaica Bay. The Sanborn map collection consists of a uniform series of large scale maps, dating from 1867 to the present depicting the commercial, industrial, and residential sections of some twelve thousand cities and towns in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The maps were designed to assist fire insurance agents in determining the degree of hazard associated with a particular property and therefore show the size, shape and construction of dwellings, commercial buildings, and factories as well as fire walls locations of windows and doors, sprinkler systems, and types of roofs. The maps also indicate widths and names of streets, property boundaries, building use, and house and block numbers. They show locations of water mains, giving their dimensions, and of fire alarm boxes and hydrants. Sanborn maps are an unrivaled source of information about the structure and use of buildings in American Cities. The collection includes some fifty thousand editions of fire insurance maps comprising an estimated seven hundred thousand individual sheets. The Library of Congress holdings represent the largest extant collection of maps produced by the Sanborn Map Company. The majority of the maps were acquired by the Library through copyright deposit, but the collection was substantially enriched in 1967 when the Bureau of the Census transferred to the Library of Congress a complete set. The 1,899 loose-leaf binders were particularly noteworthy because they included later editions than those previously acquired by the Library. The Bureau of the Census set of maps had been regularly updated by printed, paste-on corrections supplied by the Sanborn Map Company, whereas the Library of Congress copies were retained in the form in which they were copyrighted.

Die Staatstheorie im französischen (franzoesischen) Denken von Heute. [In: Revue Universitaire Internationale. Offiziells Organ der Vereinigung für studentische Völkerbundarbeit. Deutsche Ausgabe.].

Paris, January 1927. 8vo. Entire issue present, in the original printed wrappers, uncut. Wrappers a bit soiled, and first leaves of the entire issue with a few tears, far from affecting text, and a brown spot to first few leaves. Otherwise internally fine. Inner hinge weak. Pp. 26 - 39. [Entire volume: 70, (8), (1, -colophon) pp.].. The extremely scarce first printing, in German, of Sartre's third publication, "The Theory of State in modern French Thought". The work appeared simultaneously in German, French, and English, and all three publications are of the greatest scarcity. Contat and Rybalka were unable to find the French edition for the bibliography of Sartre's works and had to do with the English version. They state that the "Revue universitaire internationale" is not to be found anywhere, in no French libraries: "Il nous a été impossible de retrouver l'édition francaise de cette revue qui était publiée à Paris par la Fédération universitaire internationale simultanément en francais, anglais et allemand. Le titre de l'édition francaise est: "Revue universitaire internationale". Elle ne figure au catalogue d'aucune bibliothèque de France." (Contat & Rybalka). The present article is a brilliant and well founded essay of state theory by the 22 year old Sartre, published 16 years before his philosophical breakthrough, "L'Etre et le Néant" from 1943. Sartre was urged by his fellow opinionator Daniel Lagache to write the article. Lagache was the editor of the "Revue Universitaire Internationale", in which the article appeared.

Three leaves. Original handwritten and signed manuscript in with additions and corrections in Carl Nielsen's own hand. All three leaves folded once in the middle. Third leaf signed by Nielsen.. Dette bevirkede at musikken i langt højere grad kom til at fremstå levende og dynamisk, hvilket også Carl Nielsen bemærker.___________________Carl Nielsen encourages the Danish music society to attend a concert with the famous Viennese quartet Kolisch Quartet.
