Less than a month before Lindbergh would fly the Spirit of St. Louis on its maiden flight in preparation for his historic trans-Atlantic journey, he pays for the plane\'s critical navigation instruments, including his compass

Partly printed Document Signed, \"Charles A. Lindbergh,\" 1 page, 6.25\" x 2.75\", San Diego, April 4, 1927, a check drawn on the United States National Bank and filled out in his hand to \"Ryan Airlines\" for $923.27. Vertical creases affect one letter in signature, stamp and punch cancelations clear of signature, minor wear at top right corner, else very good. Lindbergh, a young and unknown pilot, was an unlikely candidate for the $25,000 Orteig Prize, offered by Franco-American hotelier Raymond Orteig for the first non-stop flight between New York and Paris. Unlike his well-funded and prominent rivals, Lindbergh began his quest with the modest sum of $2,000 saved from his salary as a U.S. Air Mail pilot and an additional $15,000 in financing from St. Louis businessmen Harold M. Bixby and Harry H. Knight. Even with the financing in place, obtaining a plane capable of the journey proved difficult. They were unable to find a suitable design from Wright Aeronaut

        Stilleben mit Kaktus.

Sept. 27. A. S.", verso mit Nachlaßstempel der Künstlerin. 68,7:49,8 cm.

The Diffraction of Electrons by a Crystal of Nickel in The Physical Review, Vol. 30, No. 6, December 1927, pp. 705-741

      - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of Davisson and Germer's famous 1927 experiment confirming de Broglie's hypothesis on matter waves, a key pillar of the emerging theories of quantum mechanics. The Davisson-Germer experiment demonstrated the wave-like nature of electrons by showing that they could be diffracted by a nickel crystal, and in so doing, provided important experimental support for de Broglie's theory of 'matter waves,' Bohr's theory of complementarity and Schrodinger's theory of wave mechanics. Their experiment did not begin as a test of the wave theory. They 'were studying the surface of a piece of metallic nickel by bombarding it with electrons, and observing how many electrons were scattered at various angles. During the experiment an accident occurred. Air entered the vacuum tube containing the nickel target, so that an oxide film formed on its surface. To reduce the oxide on the target the two experimenters heated the nickel to high temperatures. The effect of this was that large crystals were formed in the metal. When they repeated the experiment they obtained quite different results. Peaks in the intensity of the reflected electrons occurred at specific angles, in contrast to what they had observed before the accident. They immediately noticed the similarity of this behavior to the diffraction of X-rays by crystals. It was thus that Davisson and Germer discovered electron waves" (Dardo, Nobel Laureates and Twentieth-Century Physics, 197-198). The wave nature of the electron had been established. In April of the same year, 1927, Davisson and Germer published a small and very cautious announcement of their findings in Nature. The Physical Review paper is lengthy and is "a detailed, comprehensive report on experiments performed, conclusions reached and questions left unanswered. One of the significant features of the paper was its thoughtful examination of the possible ways of interpreting the systematic differences between observed and calculated electron wavelengths" (Physics Today, January 1978, 40). Their writing makes clear that between the March announcement in Nature and April when the Physical Review abstract was first prepared, they had "already gone beyond the point of using the 'known' structure of the nickel crystal to find out about the possibility of the wave properties of the electron: they were now using the 'known' electron waves to learn new facts about the nickel crystal" (Physics Today, 39). Davisson and Germer showed that waves are not simply mathematical conveniences, but have observable physical effects. Just as Compton showed that waves could act like particles, Davisson and Germer showed that particles could act as waves. Compton's work, together with that of Davisson and Germer established the wave particle duality hypothesis so fundamental to quantum theory. CONDITION & DETAILS: Minneapolis: American Physical Society. The Physical Review, Vol. 30, No. 6, December 1927, pp. 705-741. Quarto (10 x 7 inches; 250 x 175mm). The original wraps are toned and faded, more so at the edges. There is chipping with minor loss at the head of the spine and a small corner of the lower left rear wrap is missing; slight crease at the center foot of the textblock. There is a very, very slight stain at the foot of about three quarter of the pages, but one does have to look carefully to see it. Withal, the issue remains tightly and solidly bound.

        Jahrbuch der Einbandkunst 2.-4. Jahrgang 1928-1930 in zwei Bänden H A L B F R A N Z B Ä N D E

Leipzig, Verlag für Einbandkunst,. . (Vorwort). - Mit Beiträgen von Otto Dorfner, D.Cockerell, H.Endres, H.Fürstenberg, E.P.Goldschmidt, K.Haebler, G.D.Hobson, M.J. Husung, E.Kyriss, H.Loubier, E.Preetorius, I.Schunke u. a.

1927 omputation of the coefficient of spontaneous emission of an atom (Wikipedia). He "supplied a systematic procedure for transferring the characteristic quantum phenomenon of discreteness of physical quantities from the quantum mechanical treatment of particles to a corresponding treatment of field.         Modes and Manners of the Nineteenth Century:

London: London, J. M. Dent & Sons Limited; New York, E. P. Dutton & Co,, 1927. As Represented in the Pictures and Engravings of the Time. Translated from the German by M. Edwardes. With an Introduction by Grace Rhys. 4 volumes, octavo. Finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in contemporary blue-green half morocco, compartments tooled in gilt, raised bands, titles to spines direct, blue cloth sides, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Illustrated throughout with chromolithographic plates, photographic plates and illustrations in the text. Second edition in English, revised and enlarged, the first to include a fourth volume. A copiously illustrated book on European fashion and manners between 1790 and 1878, modes and manners was originally published in Germany under the title Die mode: Menschen und Moden im neunzehnten Jahrhundert nach Bildern und Kupfern der Zeit in 1907, and in the UK in 1909. The fourth volume brings up this recognised standard on fashion to 1914 and the "Modern Amazon".

        Malerei Fotografie Film

München: Albert Langen Verlag, 1927. A little frayed at the spine tips, else very good in yellow boards lacking the rare dust wrapper. The first notable copy of this landmark publication I have seen or handled.. Second edition, following the scarce 1925 edition. Published as Bauhaus Bücher 8, edited by Moholy-Nagy and Walter Gropius. A fine contemporary presentation copy, SIGNED by Moholy-Nagy and INSCRIBED in 1928 to lumber baron Adolf Sommerfeld, who was responsible for financing several Bauhaus projects involving both Walter Gropius and Moholy: "damit man nicht streitet [translation: so that one does not argue] / für Herr Sommerfeld / Moholy = Nagy / 3 VII 28". Illustrated with photographs and collages by Moholy-Nagy, Renger-Patzsch, Man Ray, etc., and setting out the thesis of the New Vision photographers, artists, and graphic designers. The juxtaposition of photography and typography was of particular importance to Moholy-Nagy, and the interplay of these elements is one reason for the enduring influence this book has on all the media it portrays. (Roth 44-45; Parr / Badger, v1, 91-92; Open Book 60-61; Auer 121).

Roger Sheringham and the Vane Mystery

London: W. Collins Sons and co., 1927., 1927. First Edition. Octavo. Bound in publisher's blue cloth, with red titles to front board and spine. In pictorial dust wrapper, which depicts in black and blue, a disembodied hand, a fleeing woman, and a question mark, titles to spine, and blurb, advertising matter, and sillhouette biplane to rear cover. The binding is tight, and the text shows minor spotting throughout. The colours of the dust wrapper remain bright, with a number of minor chips to edges of front cover, a missing section to the top corner of the rear cover and a second at the top of spine which removes the "Ro" and "She" of the title. A presentable copy, rare with its dust wrapper.
