Methuen, London 1927 - x, 103 p. Illus. Green leather, spine a bit faded, some edge wear and wear at top of spine. Owner's signature on half title. Cracked at pp. 36-37. Slight wear. Small ink mark on text block edge. Tape marks inside where two added illustrations have come loose. The Book and Magazine Collector lists the DeLuxe edition as having been issued in blue, green, or red leather binding, with a slipcase. This item no longer has a slipcase. Ann Thwaite in 'The Brilliant Career of Winnie The Pooh' states that it was published on October 13, 1927 in both England and America. The owner's signature is dated 4.11.27 so she was an early and keen owner! Dorothy Parker, a keen reader in another way, printed her classic review in November 1927. "But I too have a very strong feeling about the Whimsicality of Milne. I'm feeling it right now. It's in my stomach." Fortunately, the rest of the world did not agree with Parker about this enduring classic. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Introduction, foreword with table of the 591 languages & dialects of Africa, extensive bibliography. Lg. 8vo., pp.378, dialect key map ep's, black topstain, stunning African inspired & designed black & ochre printed cloth with small decorative illustrations in-text. Contains 103 original folk-tales, compiled from all over Africa, all of which were chosen by one of the 20th century's most important French poets. The translator, Margery Bianco was Margery (Bianco) Williams, author of "The Velveteen Rabbit." A major undertaking & acknowledged masterpiece, this volume brings to the English speaking world, for the very first time, the rich & sensitive images gathered from the Bantu, Haussa, Hottentot, Sumali & others. "And so in this anthology we have not only the wit & wisdom of Africa but the soul of a people which may be judged by the criteria of pure letters" - from the intro. by Arthur B. Spingarn. An important work by this master traveler, cubist, poet & novelist who impacted directly on the thinking of Max Jacob, Apollinaire, Cocteau & Andre Salmon with his innovative poetic techniques & revolutionary observations.         Ulysses.

Rhein-Verlag 1927 - Translated by Georg Goyert. Basel: Rhein-Verlag, 1927. Three volumes. Original half morocco over patterned paper boards, gilt morocco lettering-pieces, the spines numbered in gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut. FIRST EDITION IN GERMAN, LIMITED TO 1000 COPIES, THIS NUMBER 1 SIGNED BY JOYCE. THE FIRST PUBLISHED UNDER JOYCE'S SUPERVISION. A German edition of Ulysses was originally planned by Deutsche Verlag in 1924, but failed to appear. The project was then taken over by Joyce's German publisher Rhein-Verlag, who held a competition to find a translator for Ulysses. The competition was won by Georg Goyert and in August 1926 he met with Joyce in Ostend to revise the text. Joyce's reaction to the publication schedule was ambivalent; as he wrote to Harriet Shaw Weaver, Last week the entire typescript of Ulysses in German arrived and on top of it the German translator to revise it with me. We work together all day practically, word for word. They want to bring it out in October! I hope the German publisher won't rush the translation--and me (letter of 29 August 1926, J. Joyce Letters (London: 1957-1966) III, p.142). However, the writer's fears were realised, and in November he expressed his annoyance to his brother Stanislaus Joyce thus: The Germans, having given me four days at Ostende, to revise the translation with the translator (we did 88 pages) are now rushing the translation into print. It is of course full of the absurdest errors and with large gaps. Such is financial literature (letter of 5 November 1926, J. Joyce op. cit., III, p.145). But, despite his initial trepidation, Joyce seems to have been pleased with the edition when it appeared in Autumn 1927, and he wrote to Daniel Brody of Rhein-Verlag on receipt of a copy to congratulate him on the fine production of the work: [Gestatten Sie dass ich Ihnen meinen besten Dank ausdrücke für Ihre höfliche Gedacht. III, p.165). Such is financial literature. The publication was successful, and on 19 November Joyce sent a postcard to Claud W. Sykes stating that The edition was sold out in 3 weeks (J. Joyce op. cit. III, p.167). The limited edition of 1,000 copies for sale was issued in a half morocco binding (as here) and in green wrappers; as Slocum and Cahoon note, The emphasis on the private nature of the publication and the strict limitation of copies was caused by some fear that Ulysses might be subject to censorship.         ULYSSES

Paris Shakespeare and Company 1927 - First Edition, ninth printing, and the true Paris issue of the 1927 printing. Square 8vo, bound in the publisher’s original blue wraps formatted as the first edition of 1922, printed and lettered in white on the upper cover and spine. [6], 735 pp. An especially well preserved and handsome copy, especially so for the original wrappers and textblock which remains largely unopened and pristine. A fine copy of the original "Shakespeare and Company" --Sylvia Beach-- advertising card is still enclosed, the text block very fine, the wrappers with only some minor and expected mellowing or evidence of age, but clearly an unused, unread copy and quite rare thus. SCARCE EARLY PRINTING OF ULYSSES. THE RARE TRUE SHAKESPEARE AND COMPANY 1927 PRINTING IN UNREAD, UNOPENED, PRISTINE STATE. The most important novel of the twentieth century . ULYSSES can be viewed as the pinnacle of the Modernist movement, and its impact on all subsequent western literature is unmistakable. Such writers as Virginia Woolf, John Dos Passos, William Faulkner, Samuel Beckett, Malcolm Lowry, and Anthony Burgess have all paid tribute, consciously or unconsciously, to Joyce's influence. Burgess as well pronounced it the greatest single work in the English literature of this century, and he is not alone in that opinion. According to James Spoerri, "This fortunate combination of printer and publisher resulted in the appearance of ULYSSES as a book whose physical aspect is particularly suited to its content. It is (an). inviting volume, the blue and white of its covers subtly evocative of the Greece whose epic it so closely parallels" (quoted in the catalogue for the Garden Sale, Sotheby's 1989).         Ulysses [published in Two Worlds Monthly, ed. Samuel Roth].

New York: Two Worlds Publishing Company, [July 1926–September 1927] - 11 volumes, octavo. Original white and beige wrappers printed in red and black. Volume II number 4 with the original wrap-around band. A fine set. Unauthorized printing of 13 bowdlerized episodes from Ulysses by the New York publisher Samuel Roth (1893–1974). The set was originally released as 11 individual instalments containing 13 episodes. It was later published as two bound volumes containing 14 episodes including the final instalment (Vol. III, no. 4) that was never released separately and so is not included here. The publisher Samuel Roth was known for publishing sexually explicit literature and other underground material, including a pirated edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover. His pirating of Ulysses "resulted in considerable public indignation and provoked the 'International Protest' signed by 167 artists and writers and printed in transition I" (Slocum & Cahoon p. 100). Joyce was able to obtain an injunction against Roth, but not until after Two Worlds Monthly had already ceased publication. A fine set, exceptionally scarce in this condition. Slocum & Cahoon C68.
