        International Protest.

Paris: 2 February,, 1927. Folio, single leaf. With a custom black cloth folder, and housed in a matching chemise and black quarter morocco slipcase, titles to spine gilt and gilt decoration to front board. A lightly creased, clean sheet. English text of the protest against Samuel Roth's piracy of Ulysses in Two Worlds Monthly. Joyce, frustrated by the slow-moving legal proceedings against Roth, had this protest drawn up, which he revised. More than 167 literary and cultural figures added their names to the protest, including Wyndham Lewis, E. M, Forster, Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, W. B. Yeats, D. H. Lawrence, Virigina Woolf, and T. S. Eliot. It was released to the press on Joyce's birthday, and later reprinted in the April 1927 issue of Transition. The protest turned Roth into a literary pariah but failed to restrain him from printing more instalments. The injunction which Joyce won against Roth on 28 December 1928 only managed to put a temporary stop to his activities: the following year he published a piracy of the novel under the fictitious imprint of "Shakespeare and Company, Paris 1927". This unauthorised edition, effectively the first American edition, was later used as a template by Random House for their 1934 edition, which remained the standard edition in the US until 1961.

Original pen and ink drawing for Troilus and Criseyde

1927 - Pen and ink on paper, measuring 8 by 2 3/4 inches, matted and framed. This is Gill's design for a border that appears three times in the Golden Cockerel Press edition of Troilus and Criseyde, and it shows Chaucer sitting in a tree writing "Troilus" in a book. The design appears on pages 179, 243, and 310 of the published work. The drawing is double-matted, and the older, inner mat bears a pencil notation: "Museum study of modern book illustration by Eric Gill," suggesting that the drawing was once part of an exhibit. A fine drawing from one of the highspots of Gill's work as a book illustrator, in a tasteful gilded frame that measures 18 1/4 by 12 1/2 inches (463x317mm). (Skelton P444).

The Bridge of San Luis Rey

New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1927. First edition of the author's masterpiece and winner of the Pulitzer Prize. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the title page, "For ___ ________: with the cordial regards of Thornton Wilder Woodbridge, Connecticut March 1957." Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light restoration to the spine extremities. Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 greatest novels of the 20th century and named by Time Magazine as one of its 100 Best English-language novels from 1923-2005. "Few novels identify their basic plotline as succinctly and forthrightly as the opening line of Thornton Wilder's 1927 novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey: "On Friday noon, July the twentieth, 1714, the finest bridge in all Peru broke and precipitated five travelers into the gulf below." The novel's conceit is this: a certain Brother Juniper was himself about to step out onto the bridge when it broke and subsequently witnessed the plunge of five people into the abyss below. Brother Juniper wonders if the tragedy happened according to a divine plan or was simply a random instance of misfortune. His curiosity leads him to investigate the lives of the five victims to prove that the bridge collapse and the resulting deaths were indeed divine intervention--that God intended for them to die then and there. But, of course, the point of the novel is that there is no commonality among them, other than the fact that they are all simply human, with their own frailties. Wilder ends his at-once urgent and serene novel with this haunting passage: "But soon we shall die and all memory of these five will have left the earth, and we ourselves shall be loved for a while and forgotten. But the love will have been enough; all those impulses of love return to the love that made them. Even memory is not necessary for love. There is a land of the living and a land of the dead, and the bridge is love, the only survival, the only meaning" (Brad Hooper). "One of the greatest reading novels in this century's American writing...Wonderfully lucid reading" (Edmund Fuller).

        Tarzan Of The Apes (Signed)

New York: Grosset & Dunlap Publishers, [1927]. First Grosset & Dunlap reprint, with the silhouette of Tarzan in the tree used as a frontispiece illustration. Hardcover. SIGNED. 392pp. Duodecimo [19 cm] Red cloth over boards with the title stamped in black on the spine and front cover. Publisher's dark green top stain. Very good. Rubbed and bumped at the spine ends and corners of the covers (the underlying boards are just barely peeking through at the bottom fore edge corners). The covers are just a bit soiled, and there are four small, light moisture stains on the front cover. The most prominent stain is in the lower, right corner of the front cover, and measures 1 and 1/4" tall by 1/2" wide, at the widest point. The text block edges are lightly foxed, and the pages are tanned. Zeuschner 701. Signed by Edgar Rice Burroughs on the front free endpaper. A signed reprint of the story that made Burroughs' fortune, and a story which was followed by over twenty sequels. The novel relates the story of John Clayton, who was born in the western coastal jungles of equatorial Africa to a marooned couple from England, who unfortunately die relatively early in his life. He is then adopted as an infant by the she-ape Kala and named "Tarzan" ("White Skin" in the language of the apes) and raised without knowledge of his human heritage. Renowned science fiction bibliographer, E. F. Bleiler states in "Science Fiction Writers: Critical Studies of the Major Authors from the Early Nineteenth Century to the Present Day," that Tarzan of the Apes is perhaps the only character in twentieth-century English literature to achieve universal familiarity. Bleiler goes on to explain, that Burroughs' first novel, Under the Moons of Mars, garnished little attention, however his second, Tarzan of the Apes (All Story, October 1912), was an instant success, and within two years Burroughs was writing full-time. Over the next thirty-five years he wrote over one hundred novels and short stories, and it is claimed that his books sold close to six million copies during his lifetime. His individual stories were commonly published in magazines and books, translated into foreign languages, serialized in newspapers, published in comic books and strips, as well as published as "Big-Little" books, read over the radio, and turned into motion picture productions.

Paul Steegemann,, Berlin, 1927 - Berlin, Paul Steegemann, [1927]. 260 + 4 S. OLwd. EA dieser Ausgabe. (Umschlagszeichnung von Christian Schad.) - Ebd. fleckig, leicht berieben, Lichtschatten, Gbrsp. The History of the Valorous and Wittie Knight-Errant Don-Quixote of the Mancha. Translated out of the Spanish by Thomas Shelton.

Chelsea Ashendene Press -28 1927 - First Ashendene edition, one of 225 copies on Batchelor paper, out of a total edition of 245 copies, folio, printed in red and black in the new Ptolemy type, modelled on type used by F. Holle of Ulm in the printing of Ptolemy's 'Geographia' in 1482, text in double columns; border and initials designed by Louise Powell and cut on wood by W. M. Quick and Geo. H. Ford, original pigskin by W. H. Smith & Son, all edges untrimmed, internally fine, edges a little browned, binding slightly rubbed with a few faint marks, else very good, each volume preserved in a later black cloth slip-case with morocco head and foot at entry. A beautiful example of a one of the great works of the Ashendene Press. The Ashendene Press was a small private press founded by St John Hornby (1867–1946). It operated from 1895 to 1915 in Chelsea, and was revived after the war in 1920. Its books are considered to be amongst the finest of the Private Press movement. "First appearance of Ptolemy type. Ashendene knight-in-armour paper taken as a single work Don-Quixote is the largest of the Ashendene books. It has an interesting alternative to Hewitt's drawn or printed initials, the successful but unrepeatable device of neo-Kelmscott initials, borders and opening words cut on wood from designs by Louise Powell. The new Ashendene type was imitated and adapted from the Geographia of Ptolemaeus, printed by Leonard Holle at Ulm in 1482. In two columns, with red used chiefly for headings and shoulder notes, decorated but not illustrated, this link with the Kelmscott past was an entirely successful venture" (Franklin, The Ashendene Press). Ashendene Bibliography XXXVI; Franklin, The Ashendene Press, pp. 241-242; Ransom, Private Presses, p. 206, no. 39; Tomkinson, p. 8, no. 39. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Candide, or All for the best

New York: Bennett Libraries 8vo (23 cm; 9.25"). 2 vols. in 1. 182 pp., [4] ff., color plates.. 1927 Sole edition illustrated by Clara Tice, the illustrations numbering ten, printed in color, and definitely of an erotic nature. This copy (no. 130) is one of 250 copies "on special deckle-edge Pannekoek paper." The title-page, printed in black and red, announces this is an "Exact reprint of the earliest English text" and tells us that it was "printed in Holland by Joh. Enschede en Zonen for the Bennett Libraries, Inc." In the early decades of the 20th century, Tice was a sensation because of her provocative art and as the embodiment of bohemian Greenwich Village — gaining, indeed, the sobriquet "The Queen of Greenwich Village." Binding: Publisher's black goat, round spine with raised bands lettered in gilt and with a gilt-stamped female nude figure in center area of spine; front cover with two gilt-stamped reclining female nude figures reminiscent of those on big-rig mud guards! Elegant gilt turn-ins, top edge gilt and other edges deckle. Housed in a brown paper–covered open-back case. Case rubbed but sound; binding as above with spine a little pulled, corners a little bumped, and front joint (outside) a little abraded. First leaves separated and tipped in; possibly, cancels? All illustrations eye-popping in several senses; all tissue guards present.
