[MEYERHOLD ADAPTING GOGOL] Revizor v teatre imeni Vs. Meyerholda / Sbornik statei [i.e. The Government Inspector in Meyerhold's theatre. Articles]

Leningrad: Academia, 1927. 72 pp.: port., ill. In original illustrated wrappers in constructivist style by E.I. Kaplan. Schemes in text also by Kaplan. Near fine. Some soiling of the covers, Soviet bookshop's stamp on the title page. One of 3100 copies. From the series "Modern Theatre. Not Periodical Series on Matters of Modern Theatre published by Department of history and theory of theatre of the State Institute of art history" (2nd issue). Articles by A.A. Gvozdev, E.I. Kaplan, Y.A. Nazarenko, A.L. Slonimsky, V.N. Soloviev on the new interpretation of the famous Gogol's comedy The Government Inspector (i.e. Revizor). This staging caused a strong reaction among critics of the day, which usually was the case with the avant-garde theater of Meyerhold. He managed to combine different texts of Gogol using Revizor as a main theme. This staging now is regarded classical also due to the performance of Mikhail Chekhov who played the leading role of Khlestakov. Emmanuil Iosifovich Kaplan (1895-1961), singer, director and teacher. Since 1925 he worked as director in Leningrad theatre of opera and ballet and Maly Theatre, sometimes he decorated his productions himself (in 1925 he graduated Academy of arts). From 1927 to 1952 he worked as stage director in Leningrad conservatory.

        ORIGINAL PHOTO

1927. Soft cover. Fine. Leslie Simpson was a successful American mining engineer stationed in Johannesburg. Late in life he took up big game hunting, killing his first lion at age 50. He arrived in East Africa in 1920 on the first Model A Ford seen in the area. He hunted Kenya & Tanganyika throughout the 1920's killing up to 300 lion with his own rifle and under fair chase conditions. This does not include hunts he took part in as a Professional. Around 1920 he had a hunting camp on the fringe of the Serengeti in Tanganyika from which he guided clients like Paul Selby, a wildlife photographer from Johannesburg. Simpson was a wealth man and donated "African Hall's" of taxidermy to the California Academy of Sciences (San Francisco) and the Los Angeles Museum. He personally hunted each of the animals exhibited in the halls. He is primarily known for being a great lion hunter. Pictured here (right) in an 8.5 x 11 inch black and white photo in near fine condition and in a handsome recent wooden frame. He was considered a rather shy man and photos of him are not common. Fine.

        Arabische Reise. No place, 1927-1928.

1927. Large 8vo (172 x 240 mm). Scrapbook containing clippings of the newspaper series "Arabische Reise" and other articles on Arabia, along with various illustrations and music. 80 pp., each sheet covered on one side with coloured paper or cloth. Contemp. green library cloth with cover label. Original clippings of Muhammad Asad's "Arabian Journey", serialized in the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" in 1927, and including other early newspaper articles by Asad (as well as an essay by Hermann Hesse). The handsome album, apparently assembled by a German or Swiss traveller, Georg Hartmann (whose ownership is inscribed on the pastedown and initialled to the upper cover), is decorated with numerous illustrations cut from contemporary magazines, including several showing camel-mounted bedouins in the desert, a view of Mecca, portraits of Abdul Aziz ibn Saud, the muezzin's call to prayer (arranged in musical notes), and the original business wrapping paper of the Istanbul confectioner Hajji Bekir, whom Hartmann seems to have visited during a 1928 visit to Turkey. On the pastedown, Hartmann has entered a table of contents (with a - possibly slightly later - portrait of Ibn Saud as King). - Muhammad Asad (previously, Leopold Weiss) was a leading traveller and journalist of the 20th century who, in 1926, converted to Islam from Judaism, eventually becoming a diplomat for Pakistan and a best-selling author. His enthusiasm for Wahhabism is evident from these early travel reports from the Arabian Peninsula, where Ibn Saud had just captured Mecca and proclaimed independence in the Hejaz and Nejd, but had not yet united his dominions into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Indeed, Asad's feature on Ibn Saud (also included here) constitutes nothing less than a hagiographic portrait of the ideal ruler, and his incisive writings on Islam aim to familiarize western audiences with what he perceived as the purest and truest form of the religion he had come to embrace, criticizing occidental images of the Muslim faith gleaned from the Ottoman or Persian tradition, which he viewed as corruptions.

A Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way. Edited by Edwin B. Frost... and Mary R. Calvert... Part I Photographs and Descriptions. Part II Charts and Tables.

Two volumes. Oblong 4to. vi, 32; (viii) pp. Publisher's brown buckram, gilt lettered to the spines. Frontispiece portrait of Barnard, 1 full page plate of the Bruce photographic telescope at Yerkes Observatory, part I with 51 silver print photographs - all mounted on linen with a page description opposite - plus part II with 50 charts, each with a numbered key facing. Some minor fading and wear to the bindings, very good overall. Edward Emerson Barnard (1857-1923) was born into a poor family in Nashville, Tennessee, his father having died before his birth. At the age of nine he began working at a photographer's studio to supplement the family income. His interest in astronomy began early in life as well and though he was pretty much self-taught he soon became an expert comet finder. In 1882 his talent was spotted and he was employed by the local Vanderbilt University as an astronomer, before being taken on by the director of the far larger Lick Observatory in California in 1887. He continued to make important discoveries all the while and gradually began to incorporate the use of photography in his investigations. In 1895 he moved on to the University of Chicago's Yerkes Observatory where his career reached its apogee with this extraordinary work. One of approximately 700 copies produced, which, by the very nature of the wonderful mounted photographs therein, could never have been mass produced or certainly not to this extremely high standard. Barnard first received funding for the atlas in 1907 and exerted great effort in collecting the data and thousands of photographs for it, checking each one meticulously and selecting only the best. He passed away in 1923 and the work was completed by his colleagues at the Yerkes Observatory - Frost, the director, and Calvert, Barnard's niece.

Photo Album - Colonial Singapore with Rare Views of Pulau Brani Island

Singapore, 1927. Singapore, Johor, circa 1927-1930. Photograph album of an officer of the British Royal Engineers, stationed at a kampong (hamlet or village) in Singapore, quite possibly on Pulau Brani island in Keppel Bay. At least one photograph is captioned to verso, revealing location. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 7 x 4 cm, and the largest 11,5 x 9 cm. Oblong 8vo. string-tied album measuring approximately 26 x 35,5 cm, black cloth boards. Contains 53 gelatin silver print photographs mounted with corners onto black cardstock leaves. Some images mildly faded or creased, otherwise in Very Good Condition. Featuring several nostalgic views including undeveloped bays, clusters of houses on stilts perched over the water, and some colonial buildings, this album possesses some rare views of Malaysia approximately one hundred years ago. Several of the photographs illustrate the cleverly constructed Malay homes on stilts, some with long narrow foot bridges extending to the shore, others with small sampans to embark for access. One of the photographs is captioned to verso, and identifies Singapore across the bay, suggesting that the officer is standing on Pulau Brani island, which does appear to be at the appropriate distance. Two views showing chimney stack also suggest this location, where the Straits Trading Company had established a Western-style tin smelting factory in 1890. Large steamships are present in the bay. The manuscript caption reads as follows: "View of Kampong taken from Sgt.'s Mess, rails on left are on the steps leading from the mess to the Sampans. Part of Singapore docks across the water." Kampong is a Malaysian and Indonesian term for a village. In another Malay village of thatched roof-tops, curious locals all dressed in white cloth garments come out to greet or observe the photographer, making for a charming view. Locals also gather at a central well. Two rare views show a barrack block in the Changi Cantonment, with a large 'Royal Engineers' banner laid on the hillside facing the Johor Strait. Other long narrow edifices appear to also be military quarters. English colonial lifestyle is well illustrated with views of lovely ranch-style residences, the interior of one these being photographed. A group of men heads out for some sport shooting, and a gathering brings together some six couples. We also find one photograph of the Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque, constructed from 1892 to 1900, in Johor Bahru, the capital of the state of Johor, Malaysia. Other views, including some of the Malay stilt house villages, may also be from Johor. The Straits Trading Company tin smelting facility was equipped with a three-ton reverberatory furnace for smelting tin ore which was shipped from the Malay states, Siam and Australia. In 1904, the Bon Accord Dock & Yard also had ship-repair facilities on Pulau Brani island. . Very Good.

Covenant of the KK Kindred" signed by Hargrave

Kibbo Kift, London 1927 - "Covenant of the KK Kindred" ornately printed, signed by Hargrave, these were issued to all members, numbered and with their adopted Kin identity. This one is for Carol Griffiths - "Lone Kinsman" 19th October 1927. A very scarce item The organisation was founded by the charismatic Englishman John Hargrave (aka 'White Fox'), artist, author and Boy Scout Commissioner for Woodcraft and Camping, who had become disenchanted with the increasingly militaristic tendency in the Scout movement after World War I. Hargrave was promptly expelled from the Scouts by Scout founder Robert Baden-Powell. With a small group of like-minded, dissident, anti-war Scoutmasters and Scoutmistresses under his own direct leadership, he set about building an alternative and very different movement. Baden-Powell expelled Hargrave with extreme reluctance, and only after some wealthy backers had threatened to withdraw funding from the Scouts unless he was expelled. The Kibbo Kift (archaic Kentish dialect for 'proof of great strength'[2]) has been described as 'the only genuine English national movement of modern times' and was certainly very different from Baden-Powell's Boy Scouts. Based on the woodcraft principles of naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton that had been a key part of the early Scout programme, the Kibbo Kift was to be not merely a youth organisation but was to involve all ages and, very daring for the times, it was open to both sexes. The ideas of world peace and the regeneration of urban man through the open-air life replaced the nationalism and militarism Hargrave had detested in the post-World War I Scouts. Kinsmen and women were organised in Clans, Tribes and Lodges. Each individual took a 'woodcraft name', inspired by their ideas of 'Indian-style' names. The correct costume had to be hand-made by each individual or 'rooftree' (family group) and while the everyday 'habit' of Saxon hood, jerkin, shorts and long cloak must have seemed outlandish enough in the English countryside of the early 1920s; for ceremonial occasions, brilliantly coloured surcoats or silk-embroidered robes were worn by the various office-holders such as the Tallykeeper, Campswarden, Ritesmaster and Gleeman. Hargrave himself was 'Head Man' and his leadership was dynamic, inspirational and frankly autocratic. The Mark of the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift is typical of the symbolism that can be seen in many of their designs. Its meaning is: Worship (The K sign) Forever (the Circle of Unity and Eternity) Life (the Flame) through Knowledge (the Tree). Or again, ‘Worship Life Forever with Knowledge’. The Kibbo Kift's central activities of hiking and camping were refined and elevated to the level of a spiritual exercise. The weekend 'Tribal' Camps and the great annual 'Althing' were marked by colourful and impressive ritual, inspired by their ideas of what Native American ceremonies might be like, but couched in language reminiscent of the Norse Sagas and rich in Saxon archaisms. Kinsmen were not only required to make their own lightweight, one-man hiking tents (the first seen in England) but to decorate them with vivid, symbolic designs of their own devising. Influenced by Hargrave's own artistic taste, an ultra-modern 'futurist' style of design became general, and the robes, regalia, tents and other items of decorative art, often of an extremely high standard, represent an extraordinary 'democratisation' of the avant-garde art of the day. The Kibbo Kift were never more than a few hundred strong. Kinsmen and Kinswomen included the Suffragettes Emmeline Pethick Lawrence, Mary Neal and May Billinghurst, the journalist Henry Nevinson, the photographer Angus McBean, and Ruth Clark. The Advisory Committee included Havelock Ellis, Maurice Maeterlinck, the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, H. G. Wells and Professor Julian Huxley. D. H. Lawrence took an interest in the Kindred and it has been suggested that Mellors in Lady Chatterley's Lover is based on an archetypal Kinsman. The growth of [Attributes: First Edition]
