Hotel Gray et d'Albion et Galeries Fleuries [WITH 35 ORIGINAL SILVER GELATIN PRINTS]

NP, [Cannes] 1927 - Oblong quarto. [35] leaves. Uncut. Original string bound photo-album, with gold lettering to front cover. Unique photo-album documenting the construction and completion of the famous Galeries Fleuries, in Cannes in 1923-24, and consisting of luxury shops, tearooms, preceded by colonnades and arcades surrounding a luxuriant floral garden and a miniature golf. Nice architect Charles Dalmas* and his son Marcel traced its plans. The album opens with two original photographs: The first one is a portrait of French architect Charles Dalmas, next to a photograph of an unidentified man (presumably the director of the Hotel Gray et d'Albion). Both pictures have an oval shape, and measure 5 1/2 x 4". The next eleven leaves each contain each a silver gelatin print depicting the various construction stages. Each photograph measures 4 3/4 x 6 3/4". The following eighteen leaves each contain an original photograph showing various areas of the Galeries Fleuries after their completion (people strolling in the floral garden, tearooms with people enjoying themselves at the terrace, people playing at the miniature golf, facades of a few luxury shops, etc.). Two of the pictures are tinted. Each photograph measures 4 3/4 x 6 3/4". The next leaf features a 4 3/4 x 6 3/4" photograph of Charles Dalmas accompanied with his son Marcel, posing under one of the arcades. The following three leaves each contain a loose original silver gelatin print depicting the Galeries Fleuries heavily covered with snow, after the severe and unusual snow storm of December 18, 1927 (size: 7 x 9 1/4", image: 4 1/8 x 6 1/8"). All the photographs (except the last three which are loose) are pasted to a decorative heavy cardstock. Pasted on inside of back cover is a vintage newspaper article covering the inauguration of the Galeries Fleuries (February 9, 1924).Moderate creasing and sporadic closed tears along edges of album. Back cover creased. Newspaper article age-toned.Upper corner of the first loose photograph slightly chipped (not affecting image). Album in overall good, interior in very good, original photographs in near fine to fine condition. * Architect Charles Dalmas (1863-1938): After completing his studies in Paris at the Academie des Beaux Arts, Charles Dalmas returned to Nice where he built up his business steadily, ultimately completing around 100 houses, 20 or so hotels and other projects. He built some of Nice's most beautiful apartment buildings, such as the Hôtel Hermitage (Avenue Bieckert), the Winter Palace and the Grand Palace. The Hôtel Atlantic (now the Boscol Exedra Hôtel, 12 Boulevard Victor-Hugo) and the Hôtel Le Royal (23 Promenade des Anglais) are just two of his fine hotel commissions. The Hôtel Plaza (Rue du Verdun), where he re-designed the facade, reflects the period fashion for elaborate stucco decorations. Dalmas, more than any other, can be said to be the man behind much of the characteristic Belle Époque style present in Nice and the French Riviera. After WWI, Charles Dalmas built two of the finest examples of Art Deco, with his delightful pavillon of the Alpes-Maritimes for the 1925 International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Arts, and the Palais de la Méditerranée, in Nice (1929).         POEMS (1914-1927)

London: William Heinemann, Ltd, 1927. No. 63 OF 115 SIGNED COPIES (100 of which were for sale). This is an attractively bound collection of the early poetry of Robert Graves, including the war poems that first brought him notice. It was compiled with the assistance of his second wife, the American poet Laura Riding, at a time when Graves was struggling to find his footing and his poetic voice in the post-war world. Robert von Ranke Graves (1895-1985) had an unusual childhood among men of his age and class. His father was a British poet, and his mother the daughter of a German academic; he grew up in a literary household where artistic achievement was emphasized over sport and hunting prowess. He was set to study classics at Oxford when the First World War intervened. Like his friend Siegfried Sasson, Graves became a haunting voice for youth in the trenches of France. His memoir of that time, "Goodbye to All That" (1929), brought him lasting fame. His career spanned more than 70 years, and included acclaimed novels, poetry, literary criticism, social history, and groundbreaking works on the influence of classical mythology on literature. The present strictly limited edition is uncommonly seen on the market in agreeable condition. The very pleasant binding here is from the most recent generation of Sangorski productions.. 230 x 147 mm. (9 x 5 3/4"). xii, 229, [1] pp. No. 63 OF 115 SIGNED COPIES (100 of which were for sale). Graceful navy crushed morocco, gilt, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (stamp-signed on rear turn-in), covers with an unusual Art Deco-style frame composed of straight and curving gilt rules, dots, and circlets, punctuated with stylized lily and poppy tools, raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with a bold floral spray on a ground of gilt dots, red morocco label, turn-ins with geometric tooling, blue floral-printed endpapers, top edge gilt. Original paper wrappers bound in. In a suede-lined slipcase with matching morocco lip. Printed on Ellerslie paper with unicorn watermark. Faint offsetting (from bookmark?) to half title, a few spots of foxing to margin of final leaf, otherwise a very fine copy internally, quite clean, fresh, and bright, and in an as-new binding.         My: román [We: a novel]. Lidová knihovna Aventina, svazek 23 [Aventinum's Popular library, volume 23]

Ot. Storch-Marien, Prague 1927 - Small octavo (16.5 × 11.5 cm). Original decorative wrappers; 172, [3] pp. Publisher's ads. Very good or better; with just a tiny tear to the lower spine. The second ever appearance in print of Zamyatin's only completed novel, a groundbreaking work in the genre of a futuristic dystopia that was read as a bitter satire on Soviet society and could not be published in Russia. Completed in 1921, it was first issued in an English translation in 1924 (New York, E. P. Dutton), on which the present translation was actually by and large based. Evidently Roman Jakobson, living in Prague at the time, helped the translator, Vaclav Koenig, by repeatedly writing to Zamiatin and even requesting a copy of the English translation (Olshanskaya, 266). This translation even preceded the severely altered version of the Russian original that appeared in the Russian emigre journal "Volia Rossii", also in early 1927. In order to avoid repercussions for Zamyatin, who was then still living in the Soviet Union, the editor of "Volia Rossii" had pretended to publish a translation of a Czech literary work. Nevertheless, "the apearance of the Russian version in Volia Rossii caused an open political campaign against Zamiatin in the Soviet Union, and in 1931 he wrote a letter to Stalin requesting permission to emigrate" (Olshansky, 267). The Czech translation is rare, with KVK, OCLC showing only the copies at the Czech National Library and in Ljubljana. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Now We Are Six (SIGNED by Milne & Shepard)

Methuen & Co. Ltd, London 1927 - 8vo, 103pp. First Edition Limited to 200 copies, SIGNED by Author AND Illustrator, large paper edition printed on hand made paper. This book is beautifully bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in half red Morocco with a gilt illustration after Shepard to the top left front corner. There are five gilt lined raised bands to the spine. As well as a compartment each for title and author, there are four further compartments with superb gilt decorations ¿ from top to bottom: Winnie-the-Pooh, a dragonfly, a lizard, a butterfly. All pages edges are gilt and very bright. The binding is very tight and completely square. There is no hint of cracking to the outer joints and there are no bumps anywhere on the book. Internally, the pages are so exceptionally clean, bright and fresh that it appears unread. Vibrant end papers. There are no marks, inscriptions or previous keeper name. This is a near fine copy of this exquisitely bound Milne classic that we have not listed as fine due to a couple of very light (finger nail?) marks to the Morocco. It was originally retailed by Harrods and purchased by the previous owner with her very first wage packet. It has been incredibly well cared for over the years to have survived in such magnificent condition. Please do not hesitate to request further images (we have many more ready) or information.
