      Rand Kardex Service Corp Bronx 1927 - Original 6 by 4 inch bank signature card, signed by Condon. During this time, John F. Condon, a well-known Bronx personality and retired school teacher, wrote a letter to the Bronx Home News,offering $1,000 if the kidnapper would turn the child over to a Catholic priest. John F. Condon received a letter reportedly written by the kidnappers. It authorized Condon to be their intermediary with Lindbergh. Lindbergh accepted the letter as genuine. Following the latest letter's instructions, Condon placed a classified ad in the New York American reading: "Money is Ready. Jafsie". Condon then waited for further instructions from the culprits. A meeting between "Jafsie" and a representative of the group that claimed to be the kidnappers was eventually scheduled for late one evening at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx. According to Condon, the man sounded foreign but stayed in the shadows during the conversation, and he was thus unable to get a close look at his face. The man said his name was John, and he related his story: he was a "Scandinavian" sailor, part of a gang of three men and two women. The baby was being held on a boat, unharmed, but would be returned only for ransom. When Condon expressed doubt that "john" actually had the baby, he promised some proof: the kidnapper would soon return the baby's sleeping suit. The stranger asked Condon, ". would I 'burn' [be executed], if the package [i.e. the baby] were dead?" When questioned further, he assured Condon that the baby was alive.On March 16, Condon received a toddler's sleeping suit by mail, and a seventh ransom note. After Lindbergh identified the sleeping suit, Condon placed a new ad in the Home News: "Money is ready. No cops. No secret service. I come alone, like last time." On April 1, Condon received a letter saying it was time for the ransom to be delivered. The ransom was packaged in a wooden box that was custom-made in the hope that it could later be identified. The ransom money included a number of gold certificates - gold certificates were about to be withdrawn from circulation, and it was hoped this would draw attention to anyone spending them. The bills were not marked but their serial numbers were recorded. Some sources credit this idea to Frank J. Wilson, others to Elmer Lincoln Irey. On April 2, Condon was given a note by an unknown cab driver.[further explanation needed] Condon met "John" and told him that they had been able to raise only $50,000. Titled and signed by John Minihan verso. Beautifully framed. Pearse Hutchinson (1927 14 January 2012) was an Irish poet, broadcaster and translator. Hutchinson was born in Glasgow. His father, Harry Hutchinson, a Scottish printer whose own father had left Dublin to find work in Scotland, was Sinn Féin treasurer in Glasgow and was interned in Frongoch in 191921. His mother, Cathleen Sara, was born in Cowcaddens, Glasgow, of emigrant parents from Donegal. She was a friend of Constance Markievicz. In response to a letter from Cathleen, Éamon de Valera found work in Dublin for Harry as a clerk in the Labour Exchange, and later he held a post in Stationery Office. Pearse was five years old when the family moved to Dublin, and was the last to be enrolled in St. Enda's School before it closed. He then went to school at the Christian Brothers, Synge Street where he learnt Irish and Latin. One of his close friends there was the poet and literary critic John Jordan. In 1948 he attended University College Dublin where he spent a year and a half, learning Spanish and Italian. Having published some poems in The Bell in 1945, his poetic development was greatly influenced by a 1950 holiday in Spain and Portugal. A short stop en route at Vigo brought him into contact for the first time with the culture of Galicia. Later, in Andalusia, he was entranced by the landscape and by the works of the Spanish poets Lorca, Prados and Cernuda: "That early September of 1950," he would later write, "the light walked for me as it never had before, and I walked through the light I'd always longed for". In 1951 he left Ireland again, determined to go and live in Spain. Unable to get work in Madrid, as he had hoped, he travelled instead to Geneva, where he got a job as a translator with the International Labour Office, which brought him into contact with Catalan exiles, speaking a language then largely suppressed in Spain. An invitation by a Dutch friend led to a visit to the Netherlands, in preparation for which he taught himself Dutch. He returned to Ireland in 1953, and he became interested in the Irish language poetry of writers such as Piaras Feiritéar and Aonghus Fionn Ó Dálaigh, and published a number of poems in Irish in the magazine Comhar in 1954. The same year he travelled again to Spain, this time to Barcelona, where he learnt the Catalan and Galician languages, and got to know Catalan poets such as Salvador Espriu and Carles Riba. With the British poet P. J. Kavanagh, he organised a reading of Catalan poetry in the British Institute. He went home to Ireland in 1957 but returned to Barcelona in 1961, and continued to support Catalan poets. An invitation by the publisher Joan Gili to translate some poems by Josep Carner led to the publication of his first book, a collection of thirty of Carner's poems in Catalan and English, in 1962. A project to publish Hutchinson's translation of Espriu's La Pell de brau (The Bull-skin), fell through some years later. Some of the poems from this project are included in the collection Done into English. In 1963, his first collection of original poems in English, Tongue Without Hands (the title a quotation from the Spanish epic El Cid), was published by Dolmen Press in Ireland. In 1967, having spent nearly ten years altogether in Spain, Hutchinson returned to Ireland, making a living as a poet and journalist writing in both Irish and English. In 1968, a collection of poems in Irish, Faoistin Bhacach (A Lame Confession), was published. Expansions, a collection in English, followed in 1969. Friend Songs (1970) was a new collection of translations, this time of medieval poems originally written in Galaicoportuguese. In 1972 Watching the Morning Grow, a new collection of original poems in English, came out, followed in 1975 by another, The Frost Is All Over. In October 1971, Hutchinson took up the Gregory Fellowship in Poetry at the University of Leeds, on the recommendation of Professor A. Norman Jeffares. There was some controversy around the appointment following accusations, later retracted, that Jeffares had been guilty of bias in the selection because of their joint Irish heritage. Hutchinson held tenure at the University for three years, and during that time contributed to the University's influential poetry magazine Poetry & Audience one edition of the magazine, devoted entirely to his poetry, was published as a limited edition. From 1977 to 1978 he compiled and presented Oró Domhnaigh, a weekly radio programme of Irish poetry, music and folklore for Ireland's national network, RTÉ. He also contributed a weekly column on the Irish language to the station's magazine RTÉ Guide for over ten years. 1981 saw the publication of another translated collection: this time a collaboration with Melita Cataldi, of Old Irish lyrics into Italian. Another collection in English, Climbing the Light (1985), which also included translations from Irish, Italian and Galician, was followed in 1989 by his last Irish collection, Le Cead na Gréine (By Leave of the Sun). The Soul that Kissed the Body (1990) was a selection of his Irish poems translated into English. His most recent English collection was Barnsley Main Seam (1995) the long title poem celebrates the splendours of York Minster, and is a homage to the manual workers of the world. His Collected Poems were published in 2002 to mark his 75th birthday. This was followed in 2003 by Done into English, a selection of many of the translated works he produced over the years it contains translations of more than sixty poets from over a dozen languages or dialects, including Catalan, Italian, Dutch, Milanese and Irish. 'Every poem in this book has been translated because I liked it', he explained. A co-editor and founder of the literary journal Cyphers, he received the Butler Award for Irish writing in 1969. He is a member of Aosdána, the state-supported association of artists, from which he received a cnuas (stipend) to allow him to go on writing. He has described this as "a miracle and a godsend": "I was fifty-four when I was invited to become a member and frankly I was at the end of my tether. I might have carried on, but I would have been in the gutter because I would have been evicted or I would have gone mad or killed myself or both." A two-day symposium of events was held at Trinity College Dublin, to celebrate his 80th birthday in 2007, with readings from his works by writers including Macdara Woods, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Paul Durcan and Sujata Bhatt.[4] In his most recent collection, At Least for a While (2008), which was shortlisted for the Poetry Now Award, he comments on the replacement of the traditional symbolism of Ireland with the Celtic Tiger: "Music and a small plant/ we had for emblems once./ Better, surely,/ than lion or eagle./ Now our proudest boast/ is a dangerous beast of prey." He lived in Rathgar, Dublin, and died on 14 January 2012. Hutchinson's 'unique achievements resist neat classification', writes Michael Kenneally. 'When he writes of privilege and opportunism Hutchinson leaves no aftertaste of self-righteousness'. The Irish Times has described him as 'one of Ireland's most inventive, instructive, and perennially newsworthy poets. ... His poems are often short, they can appear delicate on the page, and they sometimes seem to record glimpses or passing glances, but they always embody and, at their best, articulate Hutchinson's desire for what he once called "true gentleness".' Mosquitoes is divided into six chapters, with one chapter dedicated to each of the four days of the yachting trip as well as a prologue and epilogue. Throughout the novel, Faulkner describes the characters' interactions with one another with underlying themes of sexuality, all the while exploring his overarching theme of the artist's role in society. A semi-autobiographical novel, Mosquitoes was decidedly influenced by Faulkner's life in New Orleans as an aspiring writer, and, its focus on the role of artist in society clearly reflects Faulkner's determination to define himself as a young author. I send it FROM ISRAEL EMS Amerika, also known as The Man Who Disappeared[1] and as The Missing Person[2] (German: Der Verschollene), is the incomplete first novel of author Franz Kafka (1883-1924), written between 1911 and 1914[3] and published posthumously in 1927. The novel originally began as a short story titled The Stoker. The novel incorporates many details of the experiences of his relatives who had emigrated to the United States. The story describes the bizarre wanderings of sixteen-year-old European immigrant Karl Roßmann, who was forced to go to New York City to escape the scandal of his seduction by a housemaid. As the ship arrives in the United States, he becomes friends with a stoker who is about to be dismissed from his job. Karl identifies with the stoker and decides to help him; together they go to see the captain of the ship. In a surreal turn of events, Karl's uncle, Senator Jacob, is in a meeting with the captain. Karl does not know that Senator Jacob is his uncle, but Mr. Jacob recognizes him and takes him away from the stoker. Karl stays with his uncle for some time but is later abandoned by him after making a visit to his uncle's friend without his uncle's full approval. Wandering aimlessly, he becomes friends with two drifters named Robinson and Delamarche. They promise to find him a job, but they sell his suit without permission, eat his food in front of him without offering him any, and ransack his belongings. Finally, Karl departs from them on bad terms after he's offered a job by a manageress at Hotel Occidental. He works there as a lift-boy. One day Robinson shows up drunk at his work asking him for money. Afraid of losing his job being seen talking with a friend, which is forbidden for lift-boys, Karl agrees to lend him money, then commits the far worse offence of bunking a drunk-sick Robinson in the lift-boy dorm. Being dismissed for leaving his post, Karl agrees not only to pay for Robinson's taxi, but also joins him. They travel to Delamarche's place. Delamarche is now staying with a wealthy and obese lady named Brunelda. She wants to take in Karl as her servant. Karl refuses, but Delamarche physically forces him to stay and he is imprisoned in her apartment. He tries to break out, but is beaten by Delamarche and Robinson. On the balcony, he chats with a student who tells him he should stay, because it is hard to find a job elsewhere. He decides to stay. One day he sees an advertisement for the Nature Theatre of Oklahoma, which is looking for employees. The theatre promises to find employment for everyone. Karl applies for a job and gets engaged as a "technical worker." He is then sent to Oklahoma by train and is welcomed by the vastness of the valleys and adopts the name "Ne In conversations Kafka used to refer to this book as his "American novel," later he called it simply The Stoker, after the title of the first chapter, which appeared separately in 1913.[4] Kafka's working title was The Man Who Disappeared (Der Verschollene).[5] The title Amerika was chosen by Kafka's literary executor, Max Brod, who assembled the uncompleted manuscript and published it after his death.[5] Brod donated the manuscript to the University of Oxford. Kafka broke off his work on this novel with unexpected suddenness, and it remained unfinished. From what he told his friend and biographer Max Brod, the incomplete chapter "The Nature Theatre of Oklahoma" (a chapter the beginning of which particularly delighted Kafka, so that he used to read it aloud with great effect) was intended to be the concluding chapter of the work and was supposed to end on a note of reconciliation. In enigmatic language, Kafka used to hint smilingly that within this "almost limitless" theatre his young hero was going to find again a profession, a stand-by, his freedom, even his old home and his parents, as if by some celestial witchery.[7] The parts of the narrative immediately preceding this chapter are also incomplete. Two large fragments, describing Karl's service with Brunelda, are extant, but do not fill up the gaps. Only the first six chapters were divided and given titles by Kafka. The novel is more explicitly humorous but slightly more realistic (except in the last chapter) than most of Kafka's works, but it shares the same motifs of an oppressive and intangible system putting the protagonist repeatedly in bizarre situations. Specifically, within Amerika, a scorned individual often must plead his innocence in front of remote and mysterious figures of authority. However, it is often Karl who voluntarily submits to such treatment (helping a drunk Robinson at the hotel rather than having him thrown out, paying for Robinson's taxi, travelling to Delamarche's home, resigning himself to stay in imprisonment). In the story, the Statue of Liberty is holding a sword, and some scholars have interpreted this as a "might makes right" philosophy Kafka may have believed the United States holds Kafka was fond of reading travel books and memoirs. The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin was one of his favorite books, from which he liked reading passages aloud. Although he always had a longing for free space and distant lands, it is said that he never travelled farther than France and Upper Italy.[9] Despite this, a rare photo shows Kafka with an unknown man at Marielyst beach, in Denmark.[10] Kafka, at the time, was also reading, or rereading, several novels by Charles Dickens and made the following remarks in his diary: "My intention was, as I now see, to write a Dickens novel, enriched by the sharper lights which I took from our modern times, and by the pallid ones I would have found in my own interior In 1966, James Ferman directed Amerika for the BBC series Theatre 625.[12] Zbyněk Brynych directed the 1969 film Amerika oder der Verschollene for the German TV station ZDF.[13] The novel was adapted for the screen as the film Klassenverhältnisse (Class Relations) by Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet in 1984. Federico Fellini's Intervista revolves around the fictional filming of this novel's adaptation. The novel was made into a movie called Amerika in 1994 by Czech director Vladimír Michálek.[14] In 2004, a version adapted for the stage by Ip Wischin and directed by Tino Geirun, toured the USA.[15] German artist Martin Kippenberger attempted to conclude the story in his installation The Happy Ending of Franz Kafka's "Amerika". In 2012, the Tête à Tête opera company performed Samuel Bordoli's adaptation, the chamber opera Amerika.[16] Canadian cartoonist Réal Godbout released a graphic novel adaptation in French, as L'Amérique, ou Le Disparu, published by Les Éditions La Pastèque in 2013. In 2014 it appeared in English, as Amerika (translated by Helge Dascher), published by Conundrum Press (Canada). [17] [18] In 2016, American rock band Young the Giant released their single Amerika as part of an inspiration from Kafka's Amerika.

      London, U.K.: March 17, 1924-Oct. 27, 1927. - - sc Small octavo [approximately 7 inches high by 4-3/8 inches wide]. The 4 letters dated "March 17, 1924", "July 27, 1924", "Jan. 17, 1926" and "Oct. 27, 1927" are penned in black ink on his personalized letterhead with his Kensington address printed in the top right corner. Three of the letters fill 1-1/2 to 1-2/3 sides of the letterhead. The 7/27/24 letter fills 2 sheets of letterhead [4 sides]. All four are signed "Yours ever, H. P. Greene". The letters are lightly bumped & soiled with small stains to the 1st side of the 1st letter & a few light ink stains to the 3rd letter. The letters have been folded once for mailing with a tiny tear to the right side of the fold & to the top edge of the 1st letter. Very good. Irish baritone Harry Plunket Greene made a notable contribution to British musical life not only through his concerts and recitals but also by writing and lecturing on his art, and in the field of competitions and examinations. He studied for two years at the Stuttgart Conservatory under Hromada, made his debut in "The Messiah" in 1888, and his operatic debut at Covent Garden in 1890. Thereafter he chose to make his career in recital. During the 1890s he became one of the foremost British interpreters of the German lieder, giving the first complete public performance of Schumann's "Dichterliebe" to be heard in London in 1895. He was much admired for his style, musicianship and intelligence. He created the title part in Hubert Parry's "Job" and was the original exponent or dedicatee of many of Parry's lyrical works. Charles Villiers Stanford wrote "Songs of the Sea" for him. He was a friend of Elgar and was the original baritone in the first performance of Elgar's "Dream of Gerontius" under Hans Richter in 1900.This is a wonderful selection of the singer's correspondence, with many musical references. The letters, written in a somewhat difficult handwriting, are friendly, informal and at times teasingly affectionate. They are addressed to "Dear Griffin", and from the content it is clear that Griffin was a singer and Plunket Greene was his teacher or mentor: "I have just heard from Bowman [Paget Bowman of British National Opera Company] that a letter will arrive for you next Wednesday asking you to go down and play 'Pagliacci'.Let's run through it again before you go" [3/17/24]; "As soon as you have mastered time and can have a picture in your mind of the shape of phrases [you] will be able to go where you like and carry all before you." [7/27/24]; "Don't forget that it is the word and not the note which pulls you out of your difficulties & that in the word it is the consonant & not the vowel which links up with the engine." [7/27/24].There are a number of references to other musicians. Plunket Greene writes of the British National Opera Company: "The B.N.O. wound up opening here. He [Bowman?] evicted Percy Pitt and got back Fred Austin & the change is little short of miraculous. The whole company shot up in style like a flower." [7/27/24]. Conductor Percy Pitt left the BNOC in 1924 and became Principal Conductor at Covent Garden. There is a somewhat illegible reference here to Vaughan Williams' "Hugh the Drover" which was in the BNOC's repertoire and was first performed at His Majesty's Theatre on 7/14/24. In the same letter Plunket Greene writes of the death of cellist Victor Herbert, whom he would presumably have known from his time studying in Stuttgart: "Poor old Victor Herbert; I remember him so well. It is queer to look back on the time when he was principal cello in the Stuttgart orchestra in the '80s.". On October 27, 1927, he writes of the all-girl harmony singing trio formed in 1924 by Pearl [Hamilton] Santos, Violet Hamilton and Jessie Fordyce: "The Hamilton Sisters & Fordyce are just A1 as they are. I wouldn't interfere with them for anything. It's just perfect in its way.
