After Sir John was elected to Parliament in 1892, he passed control of the firm to his eldest son Ernest, who became managing director and started publishing more trade journals.         Now We Are Six (SIGNED by Milne & Shepard)

Methuen & Co. Ltd, London 1927 - 8vo, 103pp. First Edition Limited to 200 copies, SIGNED by Author AND Illustrator, large paper edition printed on hand made paper. This book is beautifully bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in half red Morocco with a gilt illustration after Shepard to the top left front corner. There are five gilt lined raised bands to the spine. As well as a compartment each for title and author, there are four further compartments with superb gilt decorations ¿ from top to bottom: Winnie-the-Pooh, a dragonfly, a lizard, a butterfly. All pages edges are gilt and very bright. The binding is very tight and completely square. There is no hint of cracking to the outer joints and there are no bumps anywhere on the book. Internally, the pages are so exceptionally clean, bright and fresh that it appears unread. Vibrant end papers. There are no marks, inscriptions or previous keeper name. This is a near fine copy of this exquisitely bound Milne classic that we have not listed as fine due to a couple of very light (finger nail?) marks to the Morocco. It was originally retailed by Harrods and purchased by the previous owner with her very first wage packet. It has been incredibly well cared for over the years to have survived in such magnificent condition. Please do not hesitate to request further images (we have many more ready) or information. A fine copy, housed in a the original blue cloth slipcase. Samuel Pepys FRS, MP, JP, (23 February 1633-26 May 1703) was an English naval administrator and Member of Parliament who is now most famous for the diary he kept for a decade while still a relatively young man. Although Pepys had no maritime experience, he rose by patronage, hard work and his talent for administration, to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under both King Charles II and subsequently King James II. His influence and reforms at the Admiralty were important in the early professionalisation of the Royal Navy. The detailed private diary Pepys kept from 1660 until 1669 was first published in the 19th century, and is one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period. It provides a combination of personal revelation and eyewitness accounts of great events, such as the Great Plague of London, the Second Dutch War and the Great Fire of London.

        Revolt in the Desert

New York: George H. Doran Co, 1927. First American edition. Pictorial endpapers after Kennington; with 16 plates and a folding map. [xx], 328 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Brown cloth. Fine in very good plus pictorial dust jacket, camel variant (half-inch tear at back fold), bright and generally fresh. First American edition. Pictorial endpapers after Kennington; with 16 plates and a folding map. [xx], 328 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Handsome Copy. Revolt in the Desert was an instant bestseller on both sides of the Atlantic, and "[w]ithin weeks of publication the combined royalties from Revolt were more than sufficient to pay off the Seven Pillars overdraft. Lawrence's Trustees therefore invoked a special clause inserted in the contract with Cape to protect his privacy, and halted publication in England. Revolt continued to sell well, however, both in the United States and in translation" (Wilson [1988], pp. 180). Lawrence was characteristically of two minds about the book: dismissive of the text, which he viewed as an embarrassment to himself, and yet attentive to the critical response. A handsome copy of the first American edition (trade issue). O'Brien A107

Journal de Madame Rose de Saulces de Freycinet d’après le manuscrit original, accompagné de notes par Charles Duplomb

Paris, France: Société D'Éditions Géographiques, Maritimes et Coloniales, 1927. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine. 190 pp. Quarto- 9.5" x 12" tall. With 25 plates from drawings, engravings, aquatints with some in colour, 3 double-page. French text. Original printed wrappers and glassine jacket. Scarce original publication of this journal kept from 1817 to 1820. Rose Marie Pinon (1794-1832) was a well-educated middle class girl when she married French naval officer and navigator Captain Louis de Freycinet (1779- 1842). Despite the fact that wives were forbidden to join their husbands, in 1817, Rose accompanied Louis on a hazardous three year surveying voyage that would sail across the Atlantic to Rio de Janeiro, around South Africa to Australia, the Cook Islands, Hawaii and eventually the Falkland Islands where it was shipwrecked. Hill notes that "This important journal was written by the wife of Louis de Freycinet who was a rare female passenger on a naval voyage. The journal remained unpublished for nearly a century. Smuggled on board, Rose's presence was made public to the crew only after the vessel was well out of sight of the French coast. Although the crew was not entirely happy, Rose became a productive sailor and enjoyed life at sea. Her journal reveals a young and vivacious woman who made keen observations on the peoples and places she encountered. The journal is here illustrated with several unpublished drawings by the expedition's artist, Jacques Etienne Arago." Views include those of Rio de Janeiro, Port Jackson and the islands of Bourbon, Timor, Caroline and Hawaii. Slight toning of page margins but text and plates are completely unaffected. There are a few minor indentations to margins of preliminaries and two tiny holes in endpaper margins. Hill 652, Chadenat 1607. A splendid rare copy offered for sale by Come By Chance Books.
