        Silhouetten Gedichte Eines Deutsch-Amerikaners

Vienna: Artur Wolf Verlag, 1927. 8vo. 76pp. 16 original etchings printed in colors by Erhard Amadeus Dier, each signed in pencil. Original red morocco-backed boards, gilt-lettered on front cover and spine. An arresting series of images by the Austrian artist Erhard Dier (1893-1969), who was a student of Camillo Sitte and Josef Jungwirth at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Dier traveled to Switzerland, Italy and Spain before starting a career as an illustrator, working on designs for Austrian banknotes, tapestries, porcelain, wallpapers, and church windows. While generally known for a florid and temperate style, the present suite offers dramatic contrast, evoking some of the darker spirit found in the work of artists like Gustave Doré or Odilon Redon. Dier contributed to many issues of 'Die Muskete' around this time, always credited as "Amadeus" and hence explaining the difficulty in tracing his full body of work. Scarce: OCLC/WorldCat lists only the copy at the Unversity of Southern California. Stain on cover, two etchings sprung and with light wear at corners, otherwise fine.

        [Original Watercolor Dust Jacket Design]

[London], 1927. Original pen and watercolor drawing (190 x 128 mm) on artboard (255 x 198 mm). Signed in the image. Some dust soiling and smudges, some tape residue on verso with adhesion losses, pencil editorial comment on verso; still, in good state. A draft front jacket panel design by Pares for the dust jacket for Edith Ayrton Zangwill's last novel, THE HOUSE (John Murray, 1928). An editorial note (in faint pencil) on the verso implies that this design was rejected: "The Author would like a beautiful grey stone house of Tudor style - the drawing rough does not suggest a haunted house. Too modern - not two houses only one." Pares was a prolific and accomplished designer of dust jackets from the 1920s through the late 1940s, with over 600 designs credited to her. Many of the titles she designed for were mysteries or thrillers, but also included such titles as GOOD-BYE MR. CHIPS and Stapledon's STAR MAKER. Given the apparent surprising scarcity of Zangwill's novel, we've not had an opportunity to compare this draft artwork with the finished product.

        Neudachlivyi Naezdnik [The Unlucky Jockey].

Moscow: Izdanie G.F. None recorded on worldcat. 1927 - Very rare First Edition.Moscow 1927. Illustrated by A. Komarov. 30pp [2]. 11 x 14.5cm. Original colour illustrated wraps, stapled. B&W illustrations, colour centrefold. Light even toning to paper stock, minor shallow creasing, light rubbing and prominent dogearing, some minor separation to spine. Minor even toning to wraps, shallow creasing, rubbing, nudging, minor closed tears, some open tears, some separation to spine. Given his participation in the Volunteer Army during the Russian Civil War and better known for being a fervent anti-Soviet emigré, it is surprising that this little book would be published not once but twice in Russia during his exile. Beautifully printed with the full colour centrefold, the illustrations by Aleksei Komarov who was often paired with authors for his naturalist drawings. It is very rare for me to include a second edition in a catalogue, in this case an allowance has been made for the sheer extraordinary nature of the book. None recorded on Worldcat.         BLENDED WORLDS ..

Miami, Arizona: Southern Arizona Publishing Co., 1927.. Octavo, pp. [1-6] [1-3] 4-243 [244-250] [note: first two and last three leaves are blanks], original blue cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. First edition. Limited to 100 copies numbered and signed by Van Dyke, plus some out-of-series copies, this being one of the latter. Eccentric occult science fiction novel, sequel to THE FLASH, also privately printed by the author in an edition of 100 copies in Miami, Arizona, in 1927. THE FLASH and its sequel first appeared as serials in the Miami, Arizona, DAILY SILVER BELT. This is definitely not your usual Victorian, talking-heads-in-flowing-white-robes kind of occult romance; but rather a wild and wooly tale in the American tradition of such works as RONDAH, REVI-LONA, and DR. ZELL AND THE PRINCESS CHARLOTTE. It's a red-blooded, action-packed adventure, blending backdrops of the Wild West and the Roaring Twenties, complete with bootleggers, prize fighters, romantic passion, grizzled prospectors, super science and a bizarre 25-page journey through an underworld cavern in which we learn about Glowhumes, unsaturated Electrohumes, the Ancient Order of Wasted Propaganda, radicals and coefficients, the Interrogator and the Disseminator, and the progressive concentration of "sparkles" as one ascends the food chain. Taken together, they form the wacky, sui generis occultism that animates this story philosophically. Here is a quest whose hunted treasure turns out to be multilayered both figuratively and literally. It follows the adventures of Charlie, Mary and Frank (brother, sister, friend) in search of unspecified treasure at the foot of Sleeping Beauty, seen in a vision in Chicago, drawing them across the country in a covered wagon until they arrive in Arizona at a mountainous formation that looks like a giant Sleeping Beauty. Charlie is given to trances and astral travel, and early on in the story fails to return from one. It is his corpse, strapped to a rubber air mattress gliding sideways across a raging river that initiates the trip to the underworld. Mary is beautiful, quick, ethereal and extremely devoted to Charlie. Frank is brawny, slow, down-to-earth and extremely devoted to Mary. The story in large part is about how Mary becomes more earthy (and humble) and Frank more spiritual (and confident) until they pass through all the inner and outer obstacles keeping them apart as a romantic couple. Along the way, Frank becomes a champion prize fighter under the management of Dorothy, a feisty and fetching schoolteacher who gets off a bus to help Frank after the storm that separates him from Mary, but who then gets a taste of the fast life on Frank's winnings and finds another lover. Mary becomes a celebrated mind-reader, fortuneteller and faith-healer under the cynical management of her Uncle Joseph, a cagey prospector fond of doing vocal impressions. Van Dyke lacks the polish of the professional writer and is sometimes awkward, abrupt or confusing; but he tells a complex yet fast-moving story and tells it with suspense, psychological credibility, thematic depth, and comedy (sometimes unintentional). Most impressive is how he combines customarily opposite qualities, writing convincingly of the city and the desert, the boxing ring and a magical cavern, crooks and angels, thus making his book itself an intriguing example of blended worlds. A significant book that should be better known. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978), Reginald (1979; 1992) or Day (1963). Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 110. Cloth rubbed at edges, several small stains, two gatherings slightly proud, a very good copy. Quite uncommon. (#149503)

These epoch making volumes were published by Luzac and Company of London for The Eastern Buddhist Society of Kyoto, Japan, in 1927,1933, and 1934. True first editions not to be confused with the Rider reprints published in the 1950's. All bound in the original cloth with spines lettered in gilt. First Series, 1927, x, 423 pages. Contents include Zen As The Chinese Interpretation Of The Doctrine Of Enlightenment; Enlightenment And Ignorance; History Of Zen Buddhism In China, From Bodhi-Dharma To The Sixth Partiarch (Hui-Neng); Satori, And Practical Methods Of Zen Instruction; The Meditation Hall And The Ideals Of Zen Life; The Ten Cow-Herding Pictures. Very good with browning to the endsheets, no markings. Second Series, 1933, xii, 326 pages, with twenty-five collotype reproductions of Old Masters (some fold-out). Contents include The Koan Exercise; The Secret Message Of Bodhidharma; Two Zen Text-Books (the Pi-Yen-Chi and the Wu-Men-Kuan); Passivity In The Buddhist Life. Insect holes at extreme top corner of the first thirty pages, else clean and very good, no markings. Third Series, 1934, xiv, 392 pages, with thirty-three collotype reproductions of Old Masters (some fold-out). Contents include From Zen To The Gandavyuha; The Gandavyuha, The Bodhisatva-Ideal, And The Buddha; The Bodhisatva's Abode; The Desire For Enlightenment; The Significance Of The Prajna-Paramita-Hridaya Sutra In Zen Buddhism; The Philosophy And Religion Of The Prajnaparamita; Buddhist, Especially Zen, Contributions To Japanese Culture; The Zen Life In Pictures. Very good with clean, unmarked text. Suzuki was the first great scholar-interpreter of the East to the West. He virtually single-handedly brought the message of Zen, and Buddhism in general, to the West. His writings have sparked a radical change in Western ways of thinking. The historian Arnold Toynbee has predicted that future historians, when looking back on this period, will consider of major significance not events currently viewed as being of lasting importance, but rather an event few people are even aware of: the transmission of Budhhism from East to West.         HATSUMEI THE INVENTION 40 issues.

1927 - [MAGAZINE] TEIKOKU HATSUMEI KYO^KAI. HATSUMEI THE INVENTION 41 issues. To^kyo^, Maru-no-uchi. Magazines, bound Western style in decorated wrappers. 1927 - 1943. About 26 x 19 cm in size. This important magazine began in 1905. The Imperial Science and Invention Society, that published the magazine, built a permanent research facility for inventors in the Meguro area in Tokyo about the time of the earthquake. The magazine continued after the war and is still in publication today. This group of issues is as follows: Vol. 24 [1927], #s 3,4,5,7; Vol. 27 [1930] #s 9 & 11; Vol. 29 [1932] #s 5 & 7; Vol. 34 [1937] #s 6-12; Vol.35 [1938] #s 9 & 10; Vol.36 [1939] #9; Vol.37 [1940] #s 2,4,6-9, 12; Vol.38 [1941] #s 2- 4,10,12; Vol.39 [1942] #s 2,4-6,8,9,12; Vol.40 [1943] #s 1,2,4,5. The earlier issues are dedicated to civilian inventions, though as war looms in the late 30s and arrives in the 40s, the inventions grow warlike, as well. However, in 1943, there is a strange cover photo of a torn Japanese flag seemingly hanging at half staff - odd message, indeed, in the middle of a total war. Overall good or better condition with occasional soiling and edgewear. Very unusual in the marketplace. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
