MILNE, A. A.
London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1926. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1926. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt vignette to front cover, single gilt rule frame to front board, top edge gilt, yellow map endpapers. With the dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by Ernest H. Shepard. Contemporary gift inscription to first blank. Cloth fresh and bright, faint toning to endpapers as often, otherwise unmarked and fresh. A near-fine copy in the near-fine jacket, the spine barely faded, slight dust-soiling, else remarkably well-preserved. First edition, first impression. After the huge success of When We Were Very Young, first published on 6 November 1924, Milne was asked to contribute a story to the London Evening News. "The Wrong Sort of Bees", published on Christmas Eve 1925, was based on a bedtime story that Milne had told his son Christopher. It starred Christopher's stuffed bear, who had made his first public appearance in the poem "Teddy Bear", published in Punch in 1924 and later in When We Were Very Young. The original toy was a top-of-the-range Alpha Farnell bought at Harrods for Christopher Milne's first birthday, known initially as Edward or Edward Bear, then later rechristened Winnie-the-Pooh (after a favourite bear cub at London zoo). Winnie-the-Pooh was an immediate success and garnered even more enthusiastic reviews than its predecessor, with one critic writing that "When the real Christopher Robin is a little old man, children will find him waiting for them. It is the child's book of the season that seems certain to stay" (Thwaite p. 317).

A.A. Milne
Winnie The Pooh By A A Milne Methuen & Co, London - 1926 True UK First Edition / First Printing **A Lovely Original In Beautiful Condition** I am delighted to offer for auction an original First Edition / First Printing of the scarce Milne book ' Winnie The Pooh'. Published in 1926 this children's classic is a superior example compared to alot that surface presenting as nearly fine. There were four original Pooh books running between 1924-1928 followed on by The Christopher Robin Story Book in 1929. The stories and characters are still much loved the world over today and this book is the one of the most charming children's stories ever written. A delight for the collector and worthy of any shelf. Book Info: Winnie The Pooh, Methuen, London 1926: First Edition / First Printing. The book is bound in the original green cloth covers with nice bright gilt titles and decorations. This book presents beautifully, certainly one of the better examples i have encountered. Clean, bright and fresh covers showing just a hint of shelf wear to the outer extremities. The colour is perfect with no marks or blemishes and the spine hasn't darkened so holds it full colour well. The gilt is bright and sharp and overall the book looks lovely not showing a bit of its age. Internally the book is again very good+ with the original beige mapped endpapers as called for (changed to green for all later prints). There are No inscriptions or graffiti with one small sticker to the front inner. The pages are pretty much immaculate from front to back with a small mark to the first few couple of leaves only. … [Click Below for Full Description]

FRASER, Ronald:
London: Jonathan Cape. 1926. First edition, first printing. First edition, first printing. Publisher's original green cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in the Eric Ravilious illustrated dustwrapper. A lovely very near fine copy, the binding square and firm, the extremities just slightly bumped. The contents, with offsetting to the endpapers and a few spots on the text block, are otherwise clean throughout and free of inscriptions or stamps. Complete with with the lightly rubbed dustwrapper which is a little dusty and entirely without loss or tears. Not price clipped (5s. net to the lower front flap). Very scarce in the true first edition (the American edition was published later the same year). An intriguing magical realism novella in which a young female botanical student at Kew Gardens experiences sexual awakening through a spiritual transference into the worlds and lives of the plants that she tends. The book has become something of a cult classic. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

Each printed on both sides of a single folio sheet [ 335 x 203 mm]. 6th - 17th May, 1926. The Times was reduced to printing these single sheet issues during the General Strike. Besides the ten daily issues for Thursday 6th May - Monday 17th May (the paper was not published on a Sunday), there is an Imperial and Foreign Trade and Engineering Supplement dated Saturday 8th May (printed on one side only), and two issues of the Weekly Edition, dated Saturday 8th May (one side only) and Saturday 15th May. They are almost as good as new, having been kept in an envelope. They offer the most fascinating insight into the times, covering both monumental and mundane matters (including the county cricket scores and daily Broadcasting Programme).

[Click Below for Full Description]

Commercial Press, 1926. The True Story of Ah Q by Lu-Hsün Translated into English by George Kin Leung Publisher: The Commercial Press, Limited, Shanghai, China 1926 The first English edition with its extremely rare dustjacket, professionally repaired at spine area. Jacket is chipped with some loss. INSCRIBED to eminent Sinologist Herbert A. Giles by the translator George Kin Leung. Commercial Press, 1926 (1st). Collation: pp. vii+100; consisting of signed flyleaf; blank pre-title page; title-page (colophon on verso); dedication page; Preface, Contents, [1]-100. Most of the spine of the illustrated jacket is absent, restored with fibre paper. Minor foxing to preliminary pages. Internally tight and sound. From Wiki: "The True Story of Ah Q is an episodic novella written by Lu Xun, first published as a serial between December 4, 1921 and February 12, 1922. It was later placed in his first short story collection Call to Arms (吶喊, Nàhǎn) in 1923 and is the longest story in the collection. The piece is generally held to be a masterpiece of modern Chinese literature, since it is considered the first piece of work to fully utilize Vernacular Chinese after the 1919 May 4th Movement in China. Both the novella form and the low social station of the protagonist were new in the ancient Chinese literature. This is the only novella published by Lu Xun."
