PERSIA
1926-27. Small oblong album. 76 original small format silver gelatin photographs, all but one tipped in, around two thirds captioned in ink. Contemporary floral cloth, a little dusty, corners bumped. Various places, including Abadan, Bahmanshir River and Aden, S.S. British Emperor was the first ship built for the British Tanker Company Ltd (BTC), the maritime transport arm of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. The present album was compiled by one of her crew members and contains a number of photographs of Abadan and the Bahmanshir River, which flows parallel to the Shatt al-Arab/Arvand Rud, emptying into the Persian Gulf. Though APOC-related albums generally tend to focus on the oil fields, this photographer shows more interest in the local people, with a series of excellent portraits being among the best images, including young men carrying tanks of kerosene, a fireman, two uniformed river pilots, Persian cavalry and a class of Jewish schoolchildren and their teacher. There are also photographs of a Kuwaiti dhow, numerous steamships and views of Port Said, Mombasa and Aden. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Joyce, James
Shakespeare and Company, Paris, 1926. This is a very good copy in the original and fragile paperback binding with the Greek flag blue cover. Some minor wear to outer edge and spine as might be expected (see image). Hard to find in this condition. The first printing of Ulysses to have the type entirely reset, work accomplished with Joyce's participation, the 8th printing overall and one of the key Shakespeare and Company printings, very early and desirable. Ulysses was printed (in English) by Shakespeare and Company, the independent bookstore in Paris which had been established in 1919 by the American expatriate Sylvia Beach -- and which became the gathering-place for such literary greats as Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein and of course James Joyce. As is also noted on this volume's bibliographic history page, the first printing was published by Shakespeare and Company in 1922, The Eighth Printing was published in 1926, when the type was entirely re-set to correct the legion of typographic errors in the harried first printing that had carried through all the previous printings, thus basically making the 8th printing the true 2nd Shakespeare and company edition, making for a bibliographically interesting volume. An attractive well preserved copy of an elusive edition. 735pp. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall 8th Printing (Second Edition1st Printing. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Eddington, A.S.
Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1926. First edition, first printing. A milestone of astrophysics, in which Eddington essentially established the modern conceptions of stellar structure and evolution. As stated on the cover, "This study of the mechanical and physical conditions in the deep interior of the stars has been undertaken primarily in the hope that an understanding of the internal mechanism will throw light on the external phenomena accessible to observation. The inquiry involves much of the recently won knowledge of atoms and radiation and makes evident the ties which unite pure physics with astrophysics." Fine, showing only the slightest shelf wear to corners; previous seller's light pencil notes on ffep, otherwise unmarked, pages clean and bright with only very light toning, no foxing. In the practically unobtainable original dust jacket, in very good condition, unfaded, with some extensive creasing, especially along top edges of front and across rear panel, but no chips, tears or soiling; in a protective cover. 8vo, 10 3/4" x 7 1/2"; 27.5mm x 19.5mm. An exceptionally nice copy of an important book in the history of science, very scarce in this condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Rambova, Natacha (Winifred Kimball Shaughnessy Valentino, 1897-1966)
Hutchinson & Co, (Publishers) Ltd., London. Usually dated 1926, though as the foreword is dated December, 1926, we doubt it was in stores before January. This volume is bound in red cloth with gilt title "Rudolph Valentino" dropped out of black spine label. As this title is usually encountered in purple cloth with larger gilt spine titles -- and given the nice condition of these endpapers, while the rest of the book is a bit musty with occasional minor spotting -- we suspect this may be a re-bind. Very good with all 16 called-for B&W plates firmly attached (though frontispiece may have been re-glued in place.) Those hoping the offer of an "intimate" portrait means Ms. Rambova will discuss the silent film star's sexual prowess -- or even his inclinations -- are likely to be disappointed. (Dancer and film star Rodolfo Alfonso Guglielmi di Valentina d'Antonguella died Aug. 23, 1926. He and Rambova (nee Winifred Kimball Shaughnessy in Salt Lake City) had divorced in 1925 after a two-year marriage. Valentino's first bride, Jean Acker, was indeed a lesbian who locked him out of her bedroom on their wedding night. Rumors that both Valentino and Rambova were homosexual were denied by those who knew them.) 224 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Clarke, Harry (SIGNED)
Dublin. The postcard was sent from Paris on April 12, 1926 addressed to Mrs.Clarke 48 North Circular Road Dublin Ireland. He writes: "Have just got in here after a long journey. Paris much as ever on first impression. Am leaving for London on Thursday and shall be there for Friday.R and (?) are doing fine & no fights.Hope all is well.Harry" The stamp is torn with loss. An artistic colour card. In addition the following items are with it: (1/2) Harry Clarke Stained Glass, Limited & J. Clarke & Sons businesscards; (3/4) A small piece of paper with Harry Clarke's autograph dated 1917 and a modern reproduction of an old Photograph of Clarke; (5/7) An ink Sketch of Margaret Clarke by Brigid Ganly. SIGNED by the artist and an unused J.Clarke & Sons Postcard with an illustration on the front of the stained glass window erected in Mercy Convent, Gort, Co. Galway. A modern print of an old photograph of Clarke's grave in Chur, Switzerland. He was buried in Chur. A headstone was erected; but local law required that the family pledge to maintain the grave for 15 years after the death. This was not explained to the Clarke family and Harry Clarke's remains were disinterred in 1946 and reburied in a communal grave. His original headstone was removed from his grave. Since then it has other occupiers. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
