JOYCE, James, & Sylvia Beach.)
Paris: Shakespeare & Co.,/Adrienne Monnier,/J.-O. Fourcade,, 1926–37. 6 small pamphlets. All preserved in excellent condition. This small collection includes three pamphlets (one 10-page, two 4-page) from 1929 advertising the first French translation of Joyce's Ulysses (published 1929 by Maison des Amis des Livres, translated by Auguste Morel and assisted by Stuart Gilbert, reviewed by Valery Larbaud with the collaboration of Joyce himself), one of which bears a striking amateur photograph of Joyce. Also included is an 8-page pamphlet (published 1937) noting the proceedings of "Les Amis de Shakespeare and Company" in the year 1936, with a 2-page piece by Jean Schlumberger, and the following minutes (including a list of Les Amis) written by Adrienne Monnier. "A Catalogue of a Collection Containing Manuscript & Rare Editions of James Joyce, a Few Manuscript of Walt Whitman, and two Drawings by William Blake" is also included (16-pages, undated but post-1927), these all belonging to Sylvia Beach and offered for sale at Shakespeare and Company, representing the first major sale of Joyce material. The catalogue is illustrated with four black and white reproductions, one of a corrected Joyce proof, one Whitman manuscript, and two superb Blake drawings. The final piece is a 12-page catalogue for Sylvia Beach's Walt Whitman exhibition, held at Shakespeare and Company 20 April – 20 June 1926, which includes, laid in, an invitation card from Beach to the private opening of the exhibition on 19 April.

Doré, Henry, S.J.
T'Usewei Printing Press, Shanghai, 1926. Two parts in eight volumes (of thirteen published through 1938 ?). Open-sewn cloth backed printed boards. Heavily illustrated with hundreds of plates and facsimiles printed via chromolithography. Extremities of boards worn, a few corners bruised, spine labels largely chipped away, volume 5 shaken, with several gatherings started, endsheets a bit dusty, a bit musty, some marginal tanning; generally a good set, the plates fresh and bright. First edition in English of this mammoth undertaking, translated from the French, with historical and explanatory notes, by M. Kennelly. The First Part (comprised of the first five volume) is devoted to Superstitious Practices; the remaining three volumes, denoted the Second Part, are devoted to the Chinese Pantheon of religious figures. Given the span of years over which the work was published, many of the extant sets are fragmentary or want later volumes. Doré served as a Jesuit missionary for over twenty years in the Kiangsu and Nganhwei provinces. His original French text began publication in 1911 as elements in the VARIÉTÉS SINOLOGIQUES, and the preface to the first volume of this English text projected completion of the French work, in eight volumes, by 1915. 2 vol. in-8 reliure demi-basane bordeaux, Bibliothèque Internationale d'Economie Politique, Marcel Giard, Paris, 1926, L pp., 2 ff. blancs, 5 ff., 411 pp. ; 491 pp. Remarquable exemplaire, de la propre bibliothèque du professeur Georges-Henri Bousquet (1900-1978), qui publie ici la seconde édition des "Systèmes socialistes" de Pareto.

Erni Hiir / Jaan Vahtra cover design
Noor-Eesti, Tartu 1926 - Estonian language. Octavo 13 x 17 cm. Weight 130 gr. Wrappers, 71 [1] pp. The book is in Very Good condition, without any losses, remarks and damages. Frayed cover corners with creases across, cover shows some rubbing and yellowing with light brown stains (oxidation); internally minor foxing to the sheets edges. Current seldom seen verse collection is considered as the peak of poet's creativity. Collection consists of 39 love poems with elements of Futurism and represented by the adolescent indiscipline of young poet. Hiir's verses show traces of the vulgar dadaism with which he advertised himself at the outset. His feeling for strict form is deliberately in abeyance, and his experiments lead him to write verses with octopodic lines and to replace iambus with dactyl. The strongest side of his poetry not in the thoughtful development of a theme, but in its mood, which carry optimism and joyfulness more, than any other poet of the time. Book's amazing avant-garde constructivist cover design created by outstanding Estonian artist Jaan Vahtra (1882-1947), one of the most bright talents of Estonian modern art, a founding member of the Estonian Art Group of Cubism and Constructivism. Erni Hiir (Ernst Hiir) (1900-1989) was the most influential Estonian futurist poet. In his love poems instead of using beautiful erotic words, author distances himself from Standard Estonian and created a new poetic lexicon of onomatopoetic expressions, glossolalia, sounds, syllables, word fragments and foreign words to express the tender feelings of the heart. Poems of Hiir … [Click Below for Full Description]

Roethe, Gustav, Germanist (1859–1926).
Berlin, 13. Januar 1926. - 1½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. Some of the plates trimmed close at fore-edge by printer, with the caption to the plate on page 45 mostly trimmed off. Overall, a very good copy and very scarce in dust jacket. Lawrence, T. E.
London: [For the Author by Manning Pike and H.J. Hodgson, 1926]. First Edition. Extremely scarce privately printed edition, which was one of only 170 complete copies. Initialed for this reason by Lawrence at xix: "Complete copy i.xii.26 T.E.S" and with "Roberts" marked out and replaced with "K[ennington]." Additionally inscribed by Lawrence to his attorney regarding the book's publication: "E.G. Eliot from T.E. Lawrence with apologies for the trouble it is going to bring him. 30.XI.26." Original reddish-brown morocco gilt binding, raised bands, with top edge gilt and others uncut. Pictorial endpapers by Kennington. Slight rubbing to extremities but overall an excellent and complete copy with 65 lithographic plates and a striking frontispiece. As is often the case, the 'Prickly Pear' plate is present here, but not the two Paul Nash illustrations on pages 92 and 208, nor the Blair-Hughes-Stanton wood-engraving that illustrated the dedicatory poem in some copies. A very rare presentation copy of the author's epic masterpiece, with a prescient inscription by Lawrence to his lawyer, warning him of potential legal problems following publication. A remarkably accurate military history interwoven with heroic adventure and spiritual insight, The Seven Pillars of Wisdom was itself an epic in its creation given Lawrence's multiple manuscripts and drafts that slowed the final release for almost a decade. During the process, Lawrence remained grateful to his subscribers and guaranteed that there would be no library or review copies in his lifetime; and he worked to ensure that each copy … [Click Below for Full Description]
