Berlin Springer -27, 1926. (22,5 x 15,5 cm). Insgesamt wohlerhalten. - DSB 15, 42 [Attributes: First Edition]

A very fine and clean copy. 19 pp. ¶ First printing, in the scarce offprint, of Minot and Murphy's seminal Nobel Prize winning paper which "ranks as one of the greatest modern advances in [anemia] therapy." (GM). Minot and Murphy shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1934 with George Whipple "for their discoveries concerning liver therapy in cases of anaemia". (Satoskar, Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapeutics).<br><br>"Prompted by pathologist George Whipple's research on the feeding of liver to anemic dogs, Minot and Murphy fed liver to their patients. In a now famous 1926 paper [the present], they announced its miraculous benefits for forty-five otherwise doomed souls." Carl Van Vechten
London: Alfred A. Knopf, 1926. First UK Edition, Fourth Impression (stated on jacket spine). Octavo (7.5" x 5.5"); [viii], 286p. Thick printed black dustjacket showing "7s. 6d. net" price; book in brown cloth with gilt to spine. Blue lettering to title page. Jacket cleanly separated along each fold but repaired on the inside with tape, with a couple other smaller clean tears and shallow chips along edges. Boards lightly edgeworn with some fading along top edge and a bit of a cock to spine. Toning to endpapers and some foxing to initial pages, with sparse, lighter foxing occasionally to interior. Binding is sound. Not an ex-library copy. Rare to find in its dustjacket in any edition, the novel takes its name from a 19th century term for church balconies, where African Americans congregants were forced to sit apart from the white congregants who sat below. It was, unsurprisingly, controversial, with both African American and white critics and writers split in their reception and reviews. [AB-340] [Attributes: Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Glyn Morgan (1926-2015)
Contemporary - Description Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers. ConditionIn fine condition.BiographyGlyn Morgan was a Welsh artist, born in Pontypridd, Glamorgan, in 1926. His artistic education began at Cardiff College of Art in 1942, where he studied under renowned Welsh artist Ceri Richards. It was during his time at Cardiff that Glyn was first introduced to the work of Cedric Morris, who proved to be his main source of inspiration throughout his artistic career. In 1944 Glyn studied at Benton Edge (formally known as the East Anglian School of Drawing and Painting), where his friendship with Cedric Morris began. The two painted each other many times, and Glyn organised a Benton Edge exhibition at Bury St Edmunds Art Gallery in 1985, as well as contributing to the 2002 book ‘Benton End Remembered’. Glyn went on to attend Camberwell School of Art from 1947-1948 and during his time there he also taught painting at schools in Suffolk, Somerset and even Greece. His travels in Greece inspired an interest in Greek mythology, and he produces a series of paintings inspired by Greek mythology which were shown at the Chappel Galleries in 1996. Classical music also inspired his work, and his roots in Welsh history are also present in his work. Interestingly, he was very open about how difficult he sometimes found painting â€" he said in 1994 at the time of his and Cedric Morris’ exhibition at the Chappel Galleries ‘My pictures were, and still are, a battlefield’ (quoted in the Telegraph’s obituary). The Chapp … [Click Below for Full Description]

Doyle, A. Conan
New York: George H. Doran Company, (1926). Original yellow-green cloth, with dust jacket. First American Edition, published two months after the English. This is Doyle's psychic novel, for which he resurrected Professor Challenger (who had journeyed to the land of the dinosaurs in THE LOST WORLD and had faced the end of human life in THE POISON BELT; he would later return for two short stories, "When the World Screamed" and "The Disintegration Machine"). By the 1920s, following the loss of his son and his brother at the end of the Great War, Doyle's preoccupation was spiritualism; just as his other semi-autobiographical novel THE STARK MUNRO LETTERS had provided insights into Doyle's early years in medicine, so THE LAND OF MIST does into his later years in spiritualism.~Unlike the non-fiction books on spiritualism, the novel has a clear narrative, with the hero and heroine taking in one aspect or other of the occult at a time. Lord John Roxton is compelled to change his tune after a session in a haunted house, an episode in which Doyle was in his element: '. Great God! They are moving! They were rushing swiftly and noiselessly downwards! Black, black as night, huge, ill-defined, semi-human and altogether evil and damnable.' [Pearsall, quoting from the text]~This is a bright, near- fine copy (just a hint of cover soil). The quite scarce dust jacket (which on the front panel portrays a glowering Challenger filling an easy chair to capacity, and is printed with ads on the reverse side) is very good -- a few small edge-chips, very light soil.
