Emil Cadoo
Rare vintage silver gelatin male nude photo by Emil Cadoo (1926-2002), circa 1965 - a supremely sensual and evocative image of a male nude couple on a bearskin rug. Cadoo was an expatriate New York artist who worked and lived from the 1960's onward in Paris, during which time he befriended writers like Henry Miller (his nudes illustrate a Miller title), and created a large and vastly overlooked body of male nude photography - perhaps the best and yet least known work of the period, ripe for rediscovery. This original vintage print is a superb example of the intimacy and elegance of his work. Very rare. With Cadoo's studio stamp on verso. In excellent condition. Measures 9.25" by 6.75".

Lewis, H.H. [Harold Harwell] (1901-1985); editor. Communist American Poet and farmhand.
Cape Girardeau, MO: H.H. Lewis, 1926. SIGNED BY THE COMMUNIST AMERICAN POET H.H. LEWIS - Octavo, 8-3/4 inches high by 5-3/4 inches wide. Printed tan wraps, titled in a rustic decorative style on the front cover and with a short poem printed on the rear cover. This little periodical was once bound in with a larger collection of pamphlets as attested by remnants of green cloth tape and stab marks along the inner edge. 21 pages, illustrated with 3 textual vignettes or decorations. The contents are bright & clean. Good. Signed in blue ink by H.H. Lewis on the last page and with a correction in his hand on page 4. RARE. This issue is dedicated to Noah F. Whitaker, the poet-editor of the small poetry magazine "Pegasus" and includes an appearance of his poem "I Hate The Stony-Hearted Crew". Also appearing in this issue is the short poem "The Dreamers" by New York Bohemian poet Anton Romatka. In addition to Lewis' own contributions, including his poem "Amateur Woes", several other contributors are identified as Ezrirah Gunk, Mogler Snodgrass, The Boss, Joe Slimp, Farthingstone B. Twatt, names so unlikely that they may well be pseudonyms for Lewis himself. Lewis concludes on the last page: "Grand Finale: Beloved readers bear with me. You are about to finish one of the queerest magazines that you ever read - one that fully lives up to its name: it is really outlandish. The old junk-pile rattles and groans. Long years of hard service have uniformly weakened it here and there and at all points. It's under the impending fate of general and complete collapse but still holds out. Milne, A. A. (Alan Alexander)
London: Methuen and Co, 1926. Ernest H. Shepard. Hard Cover. First Edition. Near Fine. Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. First edition, first printing. Original publisher's dark green cloth, with Christopher Robin and Pooh image stamped in gilt to the front board, spine lettering in gilt, top edge gilt, pictorial endpapers. About near fine, spine ends lightly worn with some mild rubbing to the corners, slight lean to spine and a former owner bookplate to the front pastedown. Overall, a very handsome and extremely bright copy. Winnie-the-Pooh is the second in Milne's series of children's books featuring the adventures of the teddy bear character Winnie the Pooh and his friends. Each telling an individual and complete story, the chapters of Winnie-the-Pooh can be read independently of one another. Milne created the story of Winnie the Pooh for his son Christopher Robin, who had a teddy bear named Edward Bear. In his introduction, Milne explains how Edward Bear became Winnie the Pooh, although he notes that "we can't remember whether Winnie is called after Pooh, or Pooh after Winnie." The name "Winnie" comes from a bear that the Milnes saw at the London Zoo, while the name "Pooh" is from a swan whom the fictional Christopher Robin encountered in When We Were Very Young (1924). New York: American Geographical Society, under the patronage of the Czech Academy of Science, Letters, and Arts, and Charles R. Crane, 1926. First edition. Printed map on four folded sheets, each measuring approximately 62 x 60 cm, scale 1:1,000,000. Amr. Geo. Soc. Oriental Explorations and Studies Nos. 2-5 In fine condition, preserved in original cloth slipcase. A richly detailed map of northern Arabia, covering the region stretching between the Gulf of Aqaba, Aleppo, the Euphrates, and the Nefud Desert in Saudi Arabia, based on Alois Musil's expeditions in the region between 1908 and 1915. Musil began as a Czech orientalist and completed in German service, seeking to prevent British attempts to instigate Arab revolts against the Ottoman Empire. The map relied on Musil's own surveys and his collection of oral information from local inhabitants. He attracted criticism for the latter when it was first issued, but the result is a densely packed, informative view of the desert, with even pools of rainwater and broken wells noted. Militarily useful information, such as the state of roads, caravan or carriage, railway routes, and telegraph lines are indicated. An Arabic transliteration guide is printed on the map. This map was issued to accompany Musil's description of the Northern Hijaz, which the American Geographical Society published between 1926 and 1927. Musil's work, lacking the romantic airs of Doughty or Lawrence, and published mo … [Click Below for Full Description]

[PATHÉ FILM.] [DIDIÉE, Louis].
1926. 8vo, pp. xii, 155, [1] blank, with an initial blank; title-page printed in red and orange, text printed on a pale yellow ground; with numerous photographic illustrations and diagrams in the text, and six tables on three folding card mounts with a total 107 small samples of developed film (some slight oxidation to a number of examples, but overall in good condition); small tear at tail of p. 100 & 105, with some soiling to outer margin of p. 60, and some light marginal browning throughout; First edition of this important primary source book in the history of early cinema and film production. Published by Pathé, this extensive technical manual on the development of Pathé film for motion pictures was one of a small number of such manuals published during the 1920s by the leading producers of film stock, and contains not only technical information on the colouring systems used at the time by the motion picture industry, but is notable for including sets of illustrations made of actual pieces of original nitrate film. 'These books, together with a handful of other primary sources, constitute the basis of our knowledge of a relatively neglected topic in the study of early cinema: the effects achieved by colouring film stock' (Paolo Chechi Usai, 'The Color of Nitrate' p. 22, in Richard Abel, ed., Silent Film, 1996). Four basic methods of producing coloured films existed before the introduction of technicolour. These were: hand colouring (the earliest and most basic), stencil-colouring (pathécolor was a refined version), tinting (staining the film uniformly) and toning (redev … [Click Below for Full Description]

Louis De Broglie [J.D. Cockcroft association]
Gauthier-Villars et Cie, Paris, 1926. 250mm; pp. vi, 133, diagrs. WAVE MECHANICS COMES TO RUTHERFORD'S CAVENDISH LABORATORY. Important association copy of the first edition of Louis De Broglie's 'Ondes et Mouvements' [Waves and Motions], from the working library of J.D. Cockcroft, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1951 for his work (with E.T.S. Walton and Ernest Rutherford) at the Cavendish Laboratory in the 1930s where he had successfully 'split the atom', i.e. produced artificial disintegrations of a number of elements. In the mid 1920s quantum mechanics and De Broglie work in particular had caused a sensation in Cambridge. For example in 1925, after a research trip to Göttingen, P.M.S. Blackett returned to Cambridge 'brimful of talk and enthusiasm and wave mechanics' (RS Biographical Memoirs); and in in August 1927 George Paget Thomson (son of JJ Thomson) presented photographs to Cambridge's 'Kapitza Club' showing electron diffraction, the central tenet of De Broglie's work. The association is all the more important because it was an effect of wave mechanics, quantum tunelling, that proved crucial in Cockcroft's Nobel work on artificial disintegration. The date of the acquisition is given by Cockcroft, December 1926, on his signed inscription to the front flyleaf. On pages 4 and 5 we find a small pencil note on an equation, in Cockcroft's hand, and then, remarkably, a pencil wave-form diagram next to another equation. Condition: good; covers worn and marked, with evidence of small labels having been removed from upper and lower inner corners; rebacked in matc … [Click Below for Full Description]
