Venclova, Antanas and Jonas J. Burbos, designer
Kaunas: self-published (printed by S. Joselevi?iaus), 1926. Octavo (18.7 × 14 cm). Original pictorial wrappers by Jonas J. Burbos; 31 pp. A fine copy, apparently unread. Debut publication of Venclova (1906-1971), the Lithuanian and Soviet poet, writer, and politician. Venclova was the founder and editor of the most important Lithuanian avant-garde journal of the interwar period, Tre?ias Frontas (1928-1930), which had a powerful impact on the stagnant cultural scene of the conservative and authoritarian regime of Antanas Smetona. It propagated a literary style which it called "neorealism"-a synthesis of Soviet realism, German Expressionism and Italian Futurism. The present work is likewise marked by keen awareness of international tendencies, especially expressionism and futurism -- with numerous references to modern technology, such as electricity, streetcars, and the radio. In later years, Venclova spent time in Moscow and became a prominent communist leader. During the German occupation he retreated to the Soviet Union, but once again held numerous important positions after WWII. From 1954 to 1959 Venclova was the head of the Lithuanian Writers' Union. Illustrated with an understated design by Jonas J. Burbos, about whom we are unable to find any information. As of December 2019, KVK and OCLC only trace one copy, and none in North America. Maurois, Andre (engravings by J.-E. Laboureur)
Paris: Societe d'edition "le livre", Emile Chamontin, directeur, 1926. No. 10 of 20 of this edition. Paperback. VG+ but with soiling to covers where glassine was lacking, minor age toning to extremities of some pages not bad overall a tight copy that could have been stored better. The front cover is slightly cattywampus from the two extra sets of engravings being inserted in the front of the book, as might be expected. Printed wraps with glassine remnants on inside flaps. 24 pp., 15 engravings (etchings) withing the text, and two extra sets of these illustrations, each set representing a different state, are included (only 20 such sets were issued of the overall edition of 430 copies. Text is in French. The book itself has been printed on Imperial Japon, and the extra engraving printed on Imperial Japon and on Holland Van Gelder (it appears from the colophon and limitation at the rear of the book). Quite rare as a result of this limited configuration. Each set of plates is wrapped in glassine, and the extremities of these plates show age-toning or light soiling.

Vseukrains'ke fotokinoupravlinnia (VUFKU)
1926. Kiev: VUFKU, 1926. Small quarto (26 × 17.5 cm). Original beige pictorial wrappers; 51 pp. Wrappers somewhat worn; chip to rear wrapper; water stain to lower right corner of text. Scarce promotional album of the All-Ukrainian Photo Cinema Administration (VUFKU), the state-run film industry administration active from 1922 to 1930. In its early years, "the VUKFU was a 'very experimental and adventurous centre,' which published a journal, Kino, that informed its readers of European, American, and Asian productions, and nourished such artists as Dziga Vertov and Alexander Dovzhenko" (Irena R. Makaryk, Modernism in Kiev, 443). The short introductory text in Ukrainian and French is followed by photographs of key directors and actors associated with VUFKU in the 1920s, such as Dovzhenko, Grycher, Vertov, Al. Solov'ev, H. Tasin, and Marko Tereshchenko. Also shown are scenes from famous films, one view of the interior of the studio, as well as the process of its construction. "La Revolution d'Octobre 1917 a donné naissance à l'Art cinématographique ukraïnien... rien que chez nous, dans l'Union des Républiques Socialistes Soviètiques, on a su considérer le Cinéma comme un véritable Art..." Berlin, August Scherl, 1926. First Edition. Third Impression. An important book, with four stills (complete) from the science fiction epic of the same year. The third issue in wraps. Preceded by the first thousand with the Willy Reimann illustration (of which was have a copy in stock as of writing), and the second thousand matching this issue. Condition is near fine. Externally just lightly worn, internally with a fairly trivial waterstain to first couple of dozen leaves. Doesn't really detract. Spine a little worn, but a very presentable copy. Thea von Harbou and her husband, Fritz Lang, worked on the film concurrently. The plot of the film and book were produced together. It was a massive undertaking, and hugely popular. It remains one of the era's most important films, and the present title is one of the most collectable books in science fiction film. Uncommon. Cover art / illustrations by Werner Graul [5809, Hyraxia Books].All items will be packed in bubble-wrap and either a cardboard book-wrap or a box where appropriate. STRACHEY, Lytton
New York Harcourt Brace and Company, 1926. First US edition, and first edition in hardback. Original paper covered boards with printed label on the upper cover. Inscribed by Strachey for Henry Lamb on the front endpaper, "To H.L. from the Lecturer". A very good copy, small chip to the edge of the title label and some fading to the boards. A fantastic Bloomsbury association, inscribed by Strachey for the artist Henry Lamb, whose portrait of a languid Strachey is one of his most accomplished pictures. Lamb was a protégé of Ottoline Morrell who introduced him into the Bloomsbury sphere. Strachey first set eyes on the painter at a Gordon Square soiree in 1905 and was immediately struck by his beauty, confiding his affection to Duncan Grant. While Lytton almost certainly never realised this affection, they maintained a friendship and correspondence, and he later sat for him a number of times between 1908 and 1914, culminating in the famous portrait. Venclova, Antanas and Jonas J. Burbos, designer
Kaunas: self-published (printed by S. Joselevičiaus), 1926. Octavo (18.7 × 14 cm). Original pictorial wrappers by Jonas J. Burbos; 31 pp. A fine copy, apparently unread. Debut publication of Venclova (1906-1971), the Lithuanian and Soviet poet, writer, and politician. Venclova was the founder and editor of the most important Lithuanian avant-garde journal of the interwar period, Trečias Frontas (1928-1930), which had a powerful impact on the stagnant cultural scene of the conservative and authoritarian regime of Antanas Smetona.
