Osvald SIRÉN
Paris: Librairie National d'Art et d'Homme, G. Van Oest, 1926. Condition: Boards very gently shelf worn and corners bumped, upper cover of Vol. I dampstained; some plates starting to separate and one plate (no. 121) loose, not an uncommon occurance as the textblocks are too heavy for the bindings. Three volumes; folio (33cm.); publisher's navy blue cloth, gilt-lettered spines, top edges gilt, others untrimmed; vi,67pp. & 274 collotype plates; additional 14 plates of maps and plans, all but one folding; frontispieces in each volume. Still, quite a nice, better than usual set in the original binding. The collected photographs taken by the Swedish art historian and sinologist during his stay in Peking in 1922. "The Sun Also Rises" by Ernest Hemingway. First edition, first printing, and first issue with the misspelling of the word stopped as "stoppped" on page 181, line 26. Published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1926. 12mo[5" x 7 3/8"], 259 pp. The book is bound in black leather with gilt titling to the spine. The leather is in fine condition. The interior is in very good condition. A faint notation in colored pencil on the title page which has been partially erased. The textblock is toned with some light scattered spotting. "The Sun Also Rises" is the first major novel written by Ernest Hemingway. Published in 1926, the novel was recognized as a major modern piece of literature and established Hemingway's status as a literary figure. "The Sun Also Rises" is about a group of American expatriates who live in Paris and travel to Pamplona, Spain to watch the bullfights. Based largely on Hemingway and his friends, deemed "The Lost Generation", which included writers, artists, and poets, the novel is a reflection on the group and the specific relationships and dynamics within it. On the surface, the novel is the love story between protagonist Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley, a divorcee and temptress. Within the course of the novel, though, Lady Brett manages to seduce a string of men, causing tensions to run high with bitter jealousy. It is a story of unrequited love, lust, envy, beauty, and seedy ugliness. One of Hemingway's most important works, "The Sun Also Rises" is an American classic. Cornell WOOLRICH
Boni and Liverlight. Condition: Good + / Signed. Octavo, 286pp. A good or better copy in the publisher's navy cloth. Wear to corners, hinges cracked, and gentle wear to the spine ends, lacking the extremely scarce dust jacket. SIGNED and warmly INSCRIBED by Woolrich on the front free endpaper in the year of publication, when he was just 23 years old: "To Ken Daughrity in memory of many pleasant sympathies we share / from his devoted friend Cornell Woolrich. New York Aug. 10, 1926." The inscription takes up most of the leaf. This book is extremely uncommon signed, and the warm inscription suggests that Daughrity was a good friend, perhaps from Columbia University, which Woolrich was attending just until this novel was published. One of the novel's characters, Vera Dougherty, could perhaps have been named by Woolrich in a nod to Daughrity. Though not a bright copy, a uniquely attractive inscription on Woolrich's first book. INGRAMS, William Harold.]
Zanzibar: printed by the Government printer, 1926. Zanzibar: printed by the Government printer,, 1926. Small octavo. Original green cloth, title black to front cover, plain endpapers. Spine and tips a little bumped, boards a little bowed. A very good copy. Third edition, revised and enlarged. All iterations are rare, with one copy of the second edition of 1921 (Wellcome) and two of the third edition traced in libraries (Manchester and SOAS). The author is signed in the preface as "W. H. I."; this is noted colonial officer Harold Ingrams, who worked for the colonial service in Zanzibar from 1919 to 1927 and in 1931 wrote the book Zanzibar: its History and its People. Ingrams offers advice to incoming officers about how they should prepare for life in Zanzibar and what they should expect. His tone is not sensationalist and, although he urges some caution ("it would be unwise to bring out valuable animals" (p. 24)), he concludes that "Zanzibar has the reputation of being upon the whole, a pleasant place of residence" (p. 27). He also adds that "to a student of Eastern life and language the variety of mankind to be met in Zanzibar is a constant source of interest... Lining the bazaar behind pyramids of rice and other grain sit Indian shopkeepers and their families... Gold turbaned Khojas, white turbaned Bohoras, Hindus of all castes, shovel-hatted Parsees, Lascars, fierce looking Sikhs and the humble water Bheesti mingle with the crowd" (p. 26).

"In a letter to Amadeo Filippi in May 1949 Schoenberg wrote that the Drei Satiren were composed when he had been very angered by the attacks by some of his younger contemporaries. Through the Satires he wanted to attack all those who 'seek personal salvation by taking the middle road...' Secondly, 'take aim at those who pretend to aspire "back to..." Ernest Hemingway
The Torrents of Spring, Ernest Hemingway, Scribners, 1926, First Edition First Impression Hemingway's first long work after the publication of his short story collection "In Our Time". This is a very rare first edition first impression, one of only 1250 copies printed and in excellent condition. Regarded as "the best comic novel ever written by an American" by Scott Fitzgerald, the book was written as a parody of the writing style of some of his contemporaries. Publisher's seal on the copyright page which disappeared in later printings. in very good + / near fine condition the binding is exceptionally tight and straight, the dark grey boards with orange / red lettering are clean with incredibly little rubbing and minor fingermarks, the endpapers and pages are clean without tears, marks or indeed foxing. The first free endpaper shows an ownership inscription of "Edward O'Brien, May 27 1926, Secret meum mihi (my secret is mine), From Ernest Hemingway". O'Brien inscribed all his books in this way (see photo of other inscription to corroborate) and in this case indicating it was received as a gift from Ernest Hemingway. O'Brien was the founding editor of an annual anthology The Best American Short Stories in 1914 continuing until his death in 1941. In the eyes of many young writers - Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Hemingway, and William Saroyan, for example - he became regarded as a respected authority, providing them with encouragement and inspiration by reprinting their stories in his anthologies. Indeed he published Hemingway's "My Old Man" when it had not even been published yet … [Click Below for Full Description]
