You are bidding on Franz von Bayros [1866-1924] Sixty Illustrations to Dante's Divine Comedy. Np, nd [c 1926]. Original linen over boards portfolio with cloth ties and paper label to front board. First and only edition of this suite of illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy by one of the leading figures of the Decadent movement. Bayros' phantasmagoric work, which frequently depicted women engaged in sexual acts with mythological beings, children and animals, gained him notoriety, and ultimately led to his arrest and exile from Germany. This copy very likely lacking original spine; front board dampstained and discolored, some buckling to mounts, with edgewear and crimping to most, dampstaining to the outer margins of several, but tipped in plates in excellent condition. Two plates are lacking in this copy, with fifty eight of the original sixty called for present. A VG copy of a scarce item. OCLC locates 11 copies of the English one volume edition. Please email any questions and thanks for looking! [Attributes: First Edition]

MAUGHAM W. Somerset
1926. First American edition. 8vo. Original light brown cloth, with dust jacket. New York, George H. Doran Company. This edition published about 2 weeks after Heinemann's London one. This is a fine copy; the dust jacket is in very good condition: a few very small chips and tears, one little smudge on the spine, but quite presentable. Maugham got in to hot water with his portrayal of the snobbery in Anglo-Malaysian society, particularly as Maugham in the postscript admits to basing many of the characters on people of his acquaintance. Cyril Connolly included this book in his list of 100 key books of the modern movement. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Patricia Wentworth
1926. Patricia Wentworth - Hue and Cry - Lippincott 1927 - 1st Edition 1st Printing - Matching dates present on title and copyright page with no mention of later printings as required in order to denote the first printing of the first edition. A very good or better example with a touch of lean, areas of rubbing to front board, and a neatly penned previous owner's signature on front fly in a very good soiled and lightly worn dust jacket which has shallow chips, minor creasing, and tape mends on verso of rear flap. All together a rather bright and clean example of this remarkably rare title which is nearly unheard of in the original dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

MEINHOLD, William ( Translated by Lady Wilde ).
Published for the Julian Editions by Ernest Benn Ltd.; Printed at the University Press Cambridge, London, 1926. Hardcover. Folio. xx + 484 pp. Full vellum with gilt titling to spine. Hand-made paper with uncut edges, top edge gilt, decorated title page, illustrated in b&w by Thomas Lowinsky. Edition limited to two hundred and twenty five copies - most of which were bound in cloth - this being one of a more limited number bound in vellum in a cloth slipcase. A huge, beautifully printed and illustrated edition, with the translation by Jane Francesca Agnes, Lady Wilde (1821 – 1896), the mother of Oscar Wilde. The book is a fictional account of the life and death of Sidonia von Borcke (1548 – 1620), a beautiful Pomeranian noble woman who was accused of witchcraft, tortured, and eventually executed. It was written by the outspoken Pomeranian priest Johann Wilhelm Meinhold (1797- 1851), who had earlier caused great outcry when he revealed himself as the author of the work "The Amber Witch." The illustrations are by Thomas Lowinsky (1892-1947) - a renowned British artist and book illustrator. Small bookplate to front endpaper. Otherwise a lovely, bright and unmarked Fine copy. Hemingway, Ernest
The As Stable Publications, 1926. First Edition. With Hemingway's calling card, a printed "Mr. Hemingway" on the recto, to which Hemingway has added "and Mrs." after "Mr." and "with compliments from the Dry Tortugas" just below, a destination Hemingway generally visited with his male friends for fishing expeditions, but in this case likely traveled with his second wife Pauline Pfeiffer, and probably circa early 1930s. MILNE, A.A.
Methuen, 1926. First edition. Deluxe issue in publisher's full olive roan with lettering in gilt and spine elaborately decorated in gilt. Upper cover has vignette in gilt. All edges gilt. Silk marker sash present. A near fine copy, just slightly faded to the spine and a touch of wear to the head of the spine. Pictorial endpapers and line drawings by E.H. Shepard. In 1925 Methuen decided to introduce a small number of these deluxe bindings for Milne's children's books. At this time When We Were Very Young was in its 10th printing and Winnie the Pooh about to be published. The bindings are in lovely soft leather, which has a tendency to become very rubbed, making copies as nice as this one quite uncommon. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Rosenius, P.
Lund, Gleerup, 1926-1949-[1954]. Six volumes in six. Large 4to (34.3 x 24.5 cm). Text with 807 plates (146 coloured). Publisher's uniform, limited edition brown half calf, marbled boards, gilt spines.= A magnificent publication with finely coloured plates of each species, with photos showing their habitat and nesting grounds. This is most probably the largest bird book of one area ever published. "The work is intended to give an account of the life history and habits of all the breeding birds in Sweden and Scandinavia, especially during their breeding season, arranged in accordance with the natural interdependence of the species. Under each species the Latin and the Swedish names of the birds are given." (Anker). Nissen calls for 798 (144 colour) plates. The present set contains two extra colour plates (in vol. III) and eight extra plates not listed in Nissen (in vols. I, IV, V). Vol. VI with one plate less than Nissen states, but that is probably an error. All copies coming on the market differ in their number of plates. Only 100 copies were bound in publisher's half calf, hence full sets are rarely found for sale. The sixth volume is dated 1949, but the postscript by the publisher, in the rear, is dated 1954. One volume skilfully rebacked; otherwise, this set is in a fine state. Anker, 427; Nissen IVB, 793. Kunze, Richard (ed.)
Berlin: Verlag Berlin-Friedenau, 1926. First edition. Softcover. g. Large Quarto (12" x 9"). 212pp., 4pp each. Original illustrated newsprint with black lettering on cover bound in string-bound stiff beige wrappers with typed black lettering on label of spine. A weekly and later biweekly anti-Semite propaganda newsprint published by Richard Kunze starting in 1920 and continued through 1928. The newsprint offers a balanced mix of text and imagery. Except for some two color issues in the fifth volume the issues are illustrated with b/w caricature with distinct anti-Semitic tenor covering historic and contemporary events. Most of the caricatures are not signed or credited to an artist with the exception of a few in the early issues which are signed "Totila." Kunze was a member of the Fatherland Party which was active during the last phase of World War I playing a crucial part in the stab-in-the-back-myth denouncing the German government leaders who signed the Armistice on November 11, 1918 as the "November Criminals." Following brief associations with Deutschvölkischer Schutz und Trutzverband, the Deutschvölkischer Arbeitsring Berlin, which was absorbed by the German National People's Party (DNVP), Kunze founded and led his own anti-Semitic party, the Deutschsoziale Partei, one of the rivals of the Nazi Party on the far right. Kunze lost support when it became public that he diverted party money for his own purposes and, after winding up the party in 1929, he joined the ranks of his old rival, the Nazi Party, in 1930. Though he was arrested after the Battle of Berl … [Click Below for Full Description]

Ernest Hemingway
The Torrents of Spring, Ernest Hemingway, Scribners, 1926, First Edition First Impression Hemingway's first long work after the publication of his short story collection "In Our Time". This is a very rare first edition first impression, one of only 1250 copies printed and in excellent condition. Regarded as "the best comic novel ever written by an American" by Scott Fitzgerald, the book was written as a parody of the writing style of some of his contemporaries. Publisher's seal on the copyright page which disappeared in later printings. in very good + / near fine condition the binding is exceptionally tight and straight, the dark grey boards with orange / red lettering are clean with incredibly little rubbing and minor fingermarks, the endpapers and pages are clean without tears, marks or indeed foxing. The first free endpaper shows an ownership inscription of "Edward O'Brien, May 27 1926, Secret meum mihi (my secret is mine), From Ernest Hemingway". O'Brien inscribed all his books in this way (see photo of other inscription to corroborate) and in this case indicating it was received as a gift from Ernest Hemingway. O'Brien was the founding editor of an annual anthology The Best American Short Stories in 1914 continuing until his death in 1941. In the eyes of many young writers - Sherwood Anderson, Ernest Hemingway, and William Saroyan, for example - he became regarded as a respected authority, providing them with encouragement and inspiration by reprinting their stories in his anthologies. Indeed he published Hemingway's "My Old Man" when it had not even been published yet … [Click Below for Full Description]
