A.A. Milne
Alan Alexander Milne (1926) 'Winnie-the-Pooh', UK first deluxe edition, first printing, published by Methuen. Signed by illustrator Ernest H. Shepard on the title page. In addition, a handwritten and signed letter by A.A. Milne anticipating the birth of Christoper Robin, the protagonist of the seminal Winnie-the-Pooh series. The condition of the book is absolutely fine, still in its original card board box and with the original glassine dust jacket. The print run was 3,000 copies divided into three colours of the leather binding: red, green, and blue. This is the red leather variant. One of 1,000 copies of which perhaps a handful exist in this beautiful condition and signed by the iconic illustrator Ernest Shepard! Condition of the book: a fine book with no issues whatsoever. Silk ribbon market present, all page block edges gilded. No rubbing to the leather biding. Spine like new with the gilding all vibrant and not rubbed out. The book has not been handled and has sat in its box for decades. The original box has usual signs of ageing, i.e. discolouration and a few ageing spots. The best example of this book we have encountered. The letter: Single page ALS, 4.5″ x 6″, on 11 Mallord Street, Chelsea letterhead. Dated "15.iv.20" and signed by A.A. Milne in full signature as "A.A. Milne". Center fold, else near fine. An incredible letter marking the first whisper of the catalyst for Milne's Winnie The Pooh series. Although Milne would not know it at the time, the birth of his son Christopher Robin in August of 1920 which would propel his imagination into the Hundred Acre Woods … [Click Below for Full Description]

APOLLINAIRE, Guillaume, & Raoul Dufy.
Paris: Au Sans Pareil, 1926. Paris: Au Sans Pareil,, 1926. Quarto (285 x 224 mm). Later morocco halved diagonally into red and black fields, lettered in white on spine and front cover, untrimmed. 18 full-page and 18 smaller lithographs by Raoul Dufy. Contemporary bookplate of "J.A. -B.E. Dunbar". Sometime furbished, lettering clumsily retouched, light wear to extremities, spine ends chipped, hinges tender, occasional faint toning; a very good copy in an interesting binding, Apollinaire's name misspelled on the front cover. First Dufy edition, number 113 of 380 copies printed on Montgolfier d'Annonay paper from a total edition of 450. "Dufy again paid tribute to Apollinaire [...] by illustrating one of his major pieces of prose fiction. Le Poète Assassiné was originally a book of short stories which took its title from its opening novella. Dufy had attended the launch party for the book organized by Paul Dermée and Juan Gris, at the Palais d'Orléans in Montparnasse on New Year's Eve 1916. In 1924 the Sans Pareil publishing house reportedly invited Picasso to illustrate a new edition of the story, but once again, two years later, it was Dufy who took on the job [...] The closeness of the working relationship between Dufy and Apollinaire is reflected thematically in the collector's edition of Apollinaire's Le Poète Assassiné, produced in 1926, 10 years after initial publication of the work and eight years after the poet's death" (Brown, pp. 4 and 24).

NICHOLSON, William
William Heinemann Ltd. London, 1926. Publisher's pictorial boards in dustwrapper, as issued. Wrapper rather worn and soiled with paper tape reinforcement to rear, vertical crease to the last two leaves otherwise no faults. Signed by Nicholson to the Cambridge bookseller Gustave David (1860-1936). Known to all, Gustave David was one of Cambridge's enduring personalities and in 1926 William Nicholson executed his well-known drawing of David sitting on a crate at his market stall near Great St. Mary's church. Robin Halwas wrote of him that: "David had a recognisable influence on the intellectual life of of the University and a legendary role in developing the libraries of several generations of Cambridge bibliophiles [-] Towards the end of David's career the University offered him in recognition of the 'conspicuous services he has rendered the cause of humane letters' either an honorary MA or a luncheon in the hall of Trinity College; he chose the latter." A detail of Nicholson's drawing of David was used as the frontis for the valedictory volume 'David of Cambridge. Some Appreciations.' which included contributions from T.R. Glover, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, H.F. Stewart, W.H.D. Rouse and S.C. Roberts. [Cambridge University Press, 1937]. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

MILNE, A. A.
London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1926. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1926. With Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, vignette to front cover in gilt, top edge gilt, yellow map endpapers. Illustrated throughout by Ernest H. Shepard. Spine slightly cocked, rubbing to extremities, touch of wear to very tips, a couple of marks to cloth, front inner hinge a little delicate but firm, faint pencil drawings on endpapers, occasional light soiling to contents; a very good copy. First edition, first impression. Winnie-the-Pooh was an immediate success and garnered even more enthusiastic reviews than its predecessor, with one critic writing that "When the real Christopher Robin is a little old man, children will find him waiting for them. It is the child's book of the season that seems certain to stay" (Thwaite, p. 317).

CAVAFY, Constantine P.
Alexandria: [privately printed by Kasimate and Iona, 1919-26, but circulated 1926-30]. Octavo. Original printed paper wrappers. Comprising 48 bound leaves: 1 blank; 1 title leaf; 44 numbered leaves printed on rectos only, on papers of various qualities and with fonts of various sizes, ff. 42 and 43 mounted on stubs; 2 contents leaves. With a contemporary contents leaf loose, laid in at rear, arranging the poems chronologically. Wrappers expertly repaired, with loss to spine ends and extremities infilled and joints secured with Japanese tissue, browned with faint dampstain to top left of front wrapper. Overall a very good copy. An excellent example of one of Cavafy's scarce, studiously assembled poetry collections, a thematic booklet volume comprising 38 poems privately printed at the author's expense, with an authorial amendment to the collection's sequence. C. P. Cavafy (1863-1933) was famously reticent about publication throughout his career, his intensely self-critical nature and constant need to revise making it almost impossible for him to publish commercially. By 1910, only thirty-nine of his poems had been 'formally' published with a total print run of 300 copies, and at the end of his life he had recognised just 154 of his 262 works as constituting his official canon, rejecting the rest; the first comprehensive edition of his poetry did not appear until after his death in 1935. During his lifetime he privately managed the circulation of his work, selecting a small number for inclusion in periodicals, though he found the pamphlet form too 'rigid' for his liking.
