Die Pilze Mitteleuropas. Herausgegeben von der deutschen Gesellschaft für Pilzenkunde, der deutschen botanischen Gesellschaft, dem deutschen Lehrerverein für Naturkunde unter Redaktion von H. Kniep, Berlin, P. Claussen, Marburg und J. Baß, Stuttgart mit Verwertung des Nachlasses von Adalbert Ricken.

      - Leipzig, Werner Klinkhardt, 1926-1943. In 36 issues. Folio and large 4to. (35.4 x 25.0 cm). 400 [158; 56, 62; 24] pp., 88 plates (57 in full colour), numerous text figures. All in original printed wrappers.l Rare atlas with accompanying text leaves, and with fine plates after watercolours by Maria and Franz Kallenbach. According to Volbracht "Die erste Auflage bliebt wegen des Zweiten Weltkrieges unvollendet". Contents are as follows: Die Röhrlinge (Boletaceae) by F. Kallenbach, in 21 issues (reference text ending prematurely on p. 158 - the last title has an author’s name starting with H); Gallertpilze (Tremelluneae) by W. Neuhoff and die Milchlinge (Lactarii) by B. Knauth and W. Neuhoff in 12 issues; die Täublinge (Russulae) by Schäffer in 3 issues - in total 36 issues. This is all that was published before the end of WWII. Long after the war (1956), a new edition of Knauth's work on Lactarii, written by Neuhoff, was published. Around that time, Meinhard Moser contributed another part (Band IV) on the Schleimköpfe (Phlegmaticum). The latter is not in Volbracht. Both post-war parts are very scarce and not included here. The Russulae part has unusual pagination based on the systematic order of the species. However, only six species (numbered 8, 11, 35, 38, 62, and 63) were treated, each with four pages, for a total of 24 pages. Added: two leaflets, both in the 16th issue. One is a preprinted form "Eine Bitte zur Mitarbeit!", with a return address for providing additional data for "Die geographische Verbreitung der Röhrlinge" by Franz Kallenbach (which probably never materialized into a new geography of the Boletaceae), and one sales leaflet announcing the reprint of Fries' "Hymenomycetes Europaei" and, depending on enough interest, his "Monographia hymenomycetum Sueciae", as well as an overview of the series "Die Pilze Mitteleuropas". A few short annotations in the text, one rear wrapper detached, a few plates with marginal chipping and fraying, one uncoloured plate in duplicate. Schliemann, 551 quotes only 55 plates. Nissen BBI, 2375; Volbracht, 999, 1050, 1461. Not in Stafleu and Cowan. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Contact Editions, Paris 1926 - [1926]. PRESENTATION COPY. SIGNED and inscribed: "To Dora 'My only Friend' [signed] Bob Coates," on title page, with a printed copy of a photograph of the author laid down to front free endpaper. The true first edition has only been known in wrappers; this copy is professionally bound in plain unlettered contemporary dark red cloth with all edges trimmed. Possibly a presentation binding state done by the publisher for the author, or done by the author himself, or even possibly done by the recipient (doubtful). In any case, this is a cloth hardcover binding contemporary with the publication of the book. A surreal science fantasy/crime novel with a mad scientist and a "peeping Tom" ray. The novel was influenced by the principles of DaDa, the nihilistic art movement and its literary offshoot in the Paris of its day.         The Prophet (Uncommon de luxe, Holiday Edition in the original box)

Alfred A. Knopf MCMXXVI (1926), New York - Attractively bound in white velum-paper spine stamped in brown with paper tips. The spine is darkened and discolored. In gold decorated boards stamped with a red circle in which the Prophet's golden hand holds dancing humanity. Wear and flecking to the gold along the front and rear edges of the boards. Internally near fine, clean and tight; virtually unread. With "The Twelve Illustrations in this Volume Reproduced from Original Drawings by the Author." A beautiful book. With the original cardboard box with laid paper lines and with the paste-down label: "The Prophet".and describing this de luxe, Holiday Edition of The Prophet which has been set by hand and embellished with twelve drawings by the author, reproduced in collotype." The box is quite worn with 10 short pieces of tape holding the back of the box in place. The Prophet is a book of 26 prose poetry fables written in English by the Lebanese-American artist, philosopher and writer Kahlil Gibran. It was originally published in 1923 by Alfred A. Knopf. It is Gibran's best known work. The Prophet has been translated into over 40 different languages and has never been out of print. The prophet, Almustafa, has lived in the foreign city of Orphalese for 12 years and is about to board a ship which will carry him home. He is stopped by a group of people, with whom he discusses topics such as life and the human condition. The book is divided into chapters dealing with love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, houses, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death. Though born a Maronite, he was influenced not only by his own religion but also by Islam, and especially by the mysticism of the Sufis. His knowledge of Lebanon's bloody history, with its destructive factional struggles, strengthened his belief in the fundamental unity of religions, which his parents exemplified by welcoming people of various religions in their home. Connections and parallels have also been made to William Blake's work, as well as the theological ideas of Walt Whitman and in Ralph Waldo Emerson such as reincarnation and the Over-soul. Themes of influence in his work were Islamic/Arabic art, European Classicism (particularly Leonardo Da Vinci) andRomanticism (Blake and Auguste Rodin), the pre-Raphelite Brotherhood, and more modern symbolism and surrealism. Gibran followed The Prophet with The Garden of The Prophet, which was published posthumously in 1933. The Garden of the Prophet narrates Almustafa's discussions with nine disciples following Almustafa's return after an intervening absence. (Wikipedia) Later printing with a 1926 title page date and the 1923 copyright date. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

1926.. 1926.. Very good. - sc - A 10 inch high by 8 inch wide sepia toned soft focus photograph of the Hollywood movie star Douglas Fairbanks by the great Hollywood photographer of the 1920's Melbourne Spurr. The image depicts the debonair star of Hollywood swashbuckling epics in three-quarter profile from the chest up. Attired in a sepia jacket over a white shirt with striped tie, Fairbanks focuses his soft gaze and winning smile toward the camera. The photographer's name "Melbourne Spurr / Hollywood" is stamped in blind at bottom left. The portrait is boldly inscribed and signed in ink by Fairbanks diagonally at bottom right: "To Mrs. Fred Carson [sp?] / Best Wishes / Douglas Fairbanks / 1926". There is some minor creasing to the bottom left corner of the photograph. This beautiful portrait is handsomely matted. <p>The American actor and leading man Douglas Fairbanks (1883-1939) is best known for his swashbuckling roles in silent films such as "Robin Hood", "The Thief of Bagdad" and "The Mark of Zorro". In addition to his acting career, Fairbanks was a screenwriter, director and producer who was one of the founders of United Artists and of The Motion Picture Academy, hosting the first Oscar ceremonies in 1929. Married to Mary Pickford, the couple were regarded as Hollywood royalty.<p>Melbourne Spurr (1888-1964) first worked for the noted Hollywood photographer Fred Hartsook. Mary Pickford was so impressed with his work that she helped launch his career as a Hollywood portrait photographer. Spurr who, by the mid 1920's, was considered one of the great celebrity portraitists resisted signing on exclusively with one of the major movie studios, preferring instead to keep his own photography studio. Though he shined throughout the 20's, his Hollywood career gradually declined due to pressure from the large movie companies and Spurr moved on to photographing other major figures including Presidents, artists, authors, and dancers.

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd.,, 1926. With Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt, gilt vignette on front cover, top edges gilt, yellow map endpapers. Illustrated throughout by Ernest H. Shepard. Bumping to corners and ends of spine, with a touch of rubbing to extremities, single torn leaf neatly repaired. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. After the huge success of When We Were Very Young, first published on 6 November 1924, Milne was asked to contribute a story to the London Evening News. "The Wrong Sort of Bees", published on Christmas Eve 1925, was based on a bedtime story that Milne had told his son Christopher. It starred Christopher's stuffed bear, who had made his first public appearance in the poem "Teddy Bear", published in Punch in 1924 and later in When We Were Very Young. The original toy was a top-of-the-range Alpha Farnell bought at Harrods for Christopher Milne's first birthday, known initially as Edward or Edward Bear, then later rechristened Winnie-the-Pooh (after a favourite bear cub at London zoo). Winnie-the-Pooh was an immediate success and garnered even more enthusiastic reviews than its predecessor, with one critic writing that "When the real Christopher Robin is a little old man, children will find him waiting for them. It is the child's book of the season that seems certain to stay" (Thwaite p. 317). The book was first published in London on 14 October 1926 in an edition of 30,000 regular trade copies.

Isabella D'Este; Marchioness of Mantua 1474-1539 (A Study of the Renaissance)

New York: E.P. Dutton and Company, 1926. Reprint. Hardcover. vg. 2 volumes. 8vo. xxiii,392(2). xiii,419pp. Three-quarter leather with gilt lining over marbled boards. Gilt decorated spine. Raised bands. Top edge gilt. Fore-and bottom page edges untrimmed. Ribbon marker in Vol.I. Two stains to fore page edge on Vol.II. Marbled endpapers. Ex Libris. Tissue-guarded frontispiece of Isabella D'Este in both volumes. "Isabella D'Este, the Marchioness of Mantua (1474-1539) was one of the dazzling figures of the Italian Renaissance, playing the Renaissance game with an expertise that outflanked Popes and Emperors, using her brains, her charm, and her unswerving purpose to psych her opponents. This is the first of an important Renaissance figure. It is above all as a patron of art and letters that Isabella D'Este will be remembered. In this respect she deserves a place with the most enlightened princes of the Renaissance, with Lorenzo de Medici and Lodovico Sforza. This book provides a thorough examination of D'Este's life, and a detailed account of an intriguing woman of the Italian Renaissance..." (from "Historical biographies"). Illustrated with reproductions of b/w photographs and paintings. Very good condition.

THE NEW ADAM . Translated from the Original French by P. O. Crowhurst

Stanley Paul & Co. Ltd. [1926]., London - Octavo, pp. [1-7] 8-256, original red cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black. First edition in English. Translation of LE NOUVEL ADAM (1924). Brilliant doctor's experimental operation transforms dying mediocre medical student into a dedicated scientist of towering intellect, a wholly logical and unpleasant superman "devoted to science, but on an inhuman level." His scientific projects include the invention of a death ray that he tests on local villagers in rural France and the creation of artificial earthquakes by means of small atomic explosions. He is accidentally killed in a nuclear force field while engaged in his final project, a plan to set off an atomic explosion in the Netherlands "that will probably wipe out the human race" [Bleiler (1990)]. Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 2-85; (1987) 2-94; and (1995) 2-104. Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1903. Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 185. Bleiler (1978), p. 169. Reginald 12354. Private owner's bookplate affixed to front paste-down. Cloth a bit stained and dust soiled, spine panel a bit sunned, endpapers (printed on poor quality pulp paper stock) a bit age-darkened with offset on recto of half title leaf and verso of last leaf of text, else a very good copy. This uncommon, cheaply made book is rarely found in nice condition. (#149639) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
