C'ÉTAIT LE SOIR DES DIEUX [IT WAS THE EVENING OF THE GODS]

Paris: Éditions Mornay, 1926. No. 213 OF 425 NUMBERED COPIES. This is a striking volume that links considerable aesthetic achievements 80 years apart: a sumptuous specimen of Art Deco book illustration in an animated modern binding by an imaginative and innovative artisan. The brilliant colors of the bouquet on the cover echo the rich pochoir illustrations, with their lush depictions of Tahiti. Our French binder Armelle Guégant (b. 1969) has won numerous awards, and her work is sought after by bibliophiles, who are attracted to her adventuresome designs. Jean Dorsenne is the pen name of journalist and novelist Étienne Troufleau (1892-1944), who travelled to Tahiti after the First World War, documenting the beauty and culture of Polynesia in six "exotic" novels, of which the present one was the first. This deluxe edition has richly colored illustrations by Umberto Brunelleschi, an Italian artist better known as a set designer for La Scala in Milan and Les Folies Bergère in Paris, and as costume desginer to Josephine Baker. Dorsenne joined the French Resistance during World War II; he was captured by the Gestapo and died in Buchenwald.. 208 x 156 mm. (8 1/8 x 6 1/8"). 2 p.1., 232 pp., [2] leaves. No. 213 OF 425 NUMBERED COPIES. DELIGHTFUL ELABORATELY ONLAID GREEN MOROCCO BY ARMELLE GUÉGANT (signed on front turn-in), upper cover with complex onlays consisting of various colors and textures of leather forming an abstract floral bouquet, iridescent bronze endpapers, original illustrated paper wrappers bound in. Housed in a fleece-lined cloth slipcase with matching morocco trim. With head- and tailpieces and other text decoration in a Tahitian style by Maurice L'Hoir, and with 12 plates by U. Brunelleschi, all printed in color by Saudé. Some of the darker colors in the illustrations offset on facing page, the occasional very minor small spot in the margins, otherwise very bright, fresh, and clean internally, and in a vibrant new binding.         Galerie Alfred Flechtheim: Ausstellung George Grosz, 29. März - 24. April 1926 [Veröffentlichungen des Kunst-Archivs, Nr. 1]

Das Kunstarchiv Verlag, Berlin 1926 - Quarto. 36pp. Original printed wrappers. Catalog published on the occasion of an exhibition of paintings and drawings by George Grosz, held during the Spring of 1926 in Berlin, at the Galerie Alfred Flechtheim.* This catalog features 24 duo-tone and b/w photographic reproductions. Includes a poem by Gottfried Benn, and four essay on the artist and his work by Carl Einstein, Marc Neven, Max Herrmann, and Florent Fels. Some age-wear and moderate soiling on wrappers. Upper corners bumped, thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Text in German, gothic script, with one of the four essays in French. Wrappers in overall good- to good, interior in good+ to very good condition. * Alfred Flechtheim (1878-1937) was a German art dealer, art collector, journalist and publisher. Flechtheim appeared in the art world shortly after 1900, with a collection of paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne; French Avant garde early works of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and André Derain; paintings of Wassily Kandinsky, Maurice de Vlaminck, Alexej von Jawlensky, Gabriele Münter, and the Rhein Expressionists Heinrich Campendonk, August Macke, Heinrich Nauen (de), and Paul Adolf Seehaus (de). Flechtheim opened his first gallery in Düsseldorf in 1913, followed by galleries in Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, and Vienna. Flechtheim served in the German Army during World War I, but not at the front. His art business collapsed during the war but he re-opened in Düsseldorf in 1919. In 1921 he founded "Der Querschnitt" (the Cross Section), a cultural magazine. Legendary, glamorous parties in Flechtheim's gallery overflowed with the glitterati of the new Berlin: movie stars, titans of finance, prizefighters and artists of every stripe. As Hitler rose to power in the late 1920s and early 1930s, Flechtheim became a bête noire because of the art he espoused and championed. In 1933, Sturmabteilung men broke up an auction of Flechtheim's paintings. The Nazis aryanized Flechtheim's gallery, as they would many other Jewish businesses, and turned it over to Flechtheim's business manager, Alex Vömel. After the war, former party member Vömel said he didn't even remember who Flechtheim was. The Nazis seized and sold off Flechtheim's private collection, as well as the contents of his gallery. Emigration and Death Six months after the Nazis came to power in 1933, Flechtheim, penniless, fled to Paris, and tried to find work with his former business partner, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. Flechtheim subsequently organized exhibits in London of the paintings of exiled German artists. In London, Flechtheim slipped on a patch of ice, was taken to a hospital, punctured his leg on a rusty nail in his hospital bed, developed septicemia leading to amputation of his leg, and died. Macmillan became Hardy's publishers in 1902 and "in 1912 they undertook a new and definitive edition, called (at Frederick Macmillan's suggestion) the 'Wessex Edition'. For this edition Hardy revised his novels throughout for the last time In a 'General Preface to the Novels and Poems', dated October 1911 and printed in Vol. I, he explained his classification of his novels here adopted for the first time (revealing his estimate of their relative merits) and offered a brief apologia for his work. This is an essay of primary importance The Wessex Edition is in every sense the definitive edition of Hardy's work and the last authority in questions of text" (Purdy). Volumes 1-18 make up the novels and volumes 19-23 the poetry; a further volume was published posthumously in 1931 but is not included within this set. Purdy, pp. 282–286.

Les Églogues ... Texte original et traduction nouvelle par Marc Lafargue. Imprimées par Harry de Kessler. Bois dessinés et exécutés par Aristide Maillol

Weimar: Cranach Press (sold in Paris by Galerie Druet), 1926. Large 4to (binding: 326 x 242 mm). 110, [5] pp. Text in Latin and French. 44 woodcuts by Aristide Maillol, including Cranach Press device on front wrapper; 16 initials designed by Eric Gill and ornamented by Maillol. Copy no. 74 of the regular issue of 250 on Maillol wove paper, from a total French edition of 292. bound by Pierre Legrain in chocolate morocco, overall geometric decor of parallel arcs in gold with areas of cross-hatching, in the interstices patches of variously sized small palladium circles, the design continued onto the spine, lettered in palladium, and onto the wide turn-ins, light brown suede doublures, gold, silver and black marbled liners, original illustrated wrappers preserved; front turn-in signed in gilt "Pierre Legrain"; original chemise and slipcase. Provenance: Colonel Daniel Sickles, bookplate, his sale Paris, 1962-63; with Pierre Berès (sale Paris, Bergé, part 4, 20 June 2006, lot 160).*** A superb geometric binding by Pierre Legrain, on one of the most celebrated of modern artists' books. The Cranach Virgil was the result of a collaboration between the Catalan sculptor Aristide Maillol, Count Harry Kessler, Eric Gill, and other book artisans, which lasted nearly a decade. Maillol and Kessler conceived the idea for this volume while visiting Greece together in 1912. Maillol cut the woodcuts in 1912-1914 in his native village of Banyuls, near the Spanish border. As explained in Kessler's long colophon, the artist drew on local customs (dances) and monuments for inspiration. This was the first of several editions of classical texts illustrated by Maillol. The type was designed by Edward Prince, based on types used by Nicolas Jenson in the 1470s. The wove hemp paper was handmade by Aristide's nephew Gaspard Maillol in a small studio on the road between Marly-le-Roi and Montval (and came to be known as papier de Montval). After all this work, the war came, and the edition was not completed until the mid-1920s, when it was issued in German, English, and French editions. This beautiful copy was exhibited in Paris at the Bibliothèque nationale in 1947, at the Exposition de la Société de la reliure originale. Garvey & Hofer, The Artist and the Book 172; Riva Castleman, A Century of Artists Books, 110; Rewald, The Woodcuts of Aristide Maillol, 8-52.         PUDOVKIN'S FAMOUS EDITING TECHNIQUES] Kinostsenarii: Teoriya stsenariya [i.e. Film Script: The Theory of a Script]

Kinopechat', Moscow 1926 - 64 pp. 15x11 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Rear wrapper is detached and the front wrapper is almost detached from the text block, low margin of p.19 is cut off. Otherwise very good. The first book by Vsevolod Pudovkin (1893-1953), a Russian and Soviet film director, screenwriter and actor. Pudovkin, proves just how integral Russian film was to cinema at the beginning of the 20th century by providing his own montage theory, slightly different from that of Eisenstein, that formed the foundation of the classic Hollywood style of editing, which is used in almost every film today. «The foundation of film art is editing.» In this edition he for the first time describes his editing techniques: contrast, parallelism, symbolism, simultaneity, and leit motif. Each of these techniques are in every editor's arsenal and used in virtually every film made around the world. The constructivist design of the wrappers by Piotr Galadzhiev (1900-1971), Soviet actor, set designer and artist who besides participating in theatre productions was also an illustrator for a few film magazines. He also designed covers for the film magazine Kino-Eye and for the popular film library Kinopechat, for which he produced a cover for the 1926 pamphlet on Sergei Eisenstein and his famous film 'Battleship Potemkin'. Worldcat locates copies in Bowdoin College Library, USC Library. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Slight offsetting to the end-papers. Loosely inserted is a ticket for Hugh MacDiarmid's 70th Birthday party hosted by the Edinburgh City committee communist Party. Hugh MacDiarmid (C.M. Grieve) was Scotland’s most influential and controversial writer in the 20th century. He urged and enabled the regeneration of all aspects of Scotland’s literature and culture through his poetry, polemical writing and political activity. 'A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle' (1926) is generally regarded as Scotland’s masterpiece of Modernism. 'He started writing in Scots, using words and phrases he knew from boyhood and acquired from reading in dictionaries and works of Scottish literature from earlier eras. The poems of Sangschaw (1925), Penny Wheep (1926) and A Drunk Man Looks At The Thistle (1926) were shocking, adult, wry, rebarbative, difficult, piercingly sweet, unsentimental and brutal. They established a new dispensation for Scottish literature, and modernist lusts: for the body and the sexually explicit cognate with Joyce and Lawrence; for the local and demotic, cognate with William Carlos Williams; for the difficult, cognate with Eliot; for the vatic and austere, cognate with Yeats and Pound; for the intellectually demanding, cognate with Stevens and Valéry; but uniquely in the Scottish context, reclaiming a literary history that had fallen into neglect and obfuscation. Forget about Burns, he advised, go back to Dunbar and Henryson, recover and reclaim a national tradition that goes back through millennia.' (Scottish Poetry Library). A wonderful copy of the author's key poetry collection and scarce with such attributes. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

The Brewsters published a memoir of the author in 1934, entitled D. H. Lawrence: Reminiscences and Correspondence. Lawrence signed this book four months before his death. This is the first American edition, published only months after the first English edition. Roberts A34. Text clean and fine, original boards bright. Expert restoration to original spine.         Iz istorii kampanii 1914 goda na russkom fronte. Nachalo voiny i operatsii v Vostochnoi Prussii [The history of the 1914 campaign on the Russian front. The beginning of the war and the operation in Eastern Prussia]

Plamia, Prague 1926 - Quarto (25.5 × 18 cm). Original printed wrappers; X, 436 pp. 14 maps and schemes on separate coated paper. A very good, uncut and unopened copy; light soil to wrappers and spine strip and a few nicks to creases. One of the earliest and most detailed accounts of the Russian invasion of East Prussia following the declaration of war with Germany in 1914. General Lieutenant Golovin commanded numerous regiments during WWI; in 1919 he attempted to join the Kolchak White government in Siberia, but finding the latter in disarray he returned to Paris, where he became well known as a military historian and tactician. After the publication of this initial work on World War I, Golovin continued to study the war both from the perspective of Russian generals and through the memoirs of German and Austrian military leaders, and three further volumes appeared in Paris in 1930, 1936 and 1940 respectively. In the present volume, Golovin describes the outbreak of war, Russia's military position, as well as the first operations in Eastern Prussia. The extensive appendix reproduces a series of official orders as well as fourteen charts and strategic maps, loosely inserted on better paper stock. Savine 06239.         North American Indians

Edinburgh: John Grant,, 1926. Being Letters and Notes on Their Manners, Customs, and Conditions, Written During Their Eight Years' Travel Amongst the Wildest Tribes of Indians in North America. 1832-1839. 2 volumes, large octavo, original pictorial red cloth, titles gilt to spines and front covers with pictorial decoration in gilt and black, top edge gilt, others uncut. Over 300 colour illustrations on 180 plates, including 3 coloured maps, one folding. Very light bumps and rubbing to ends of spines and tips; an excellent, fresh set. A young lawyer turned portraitist, Catlin set out in 1830 from his home in Pennsylvania to record on canvas the indigenous tribes of North America and their way of life. His eight years among the major tribes of the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains resulted in his "Indian Gallery," an enormous collection of artefacts as well as more than four hundred paintings, including portraits and scenes of tribal life. The resultant book, first published with uncoloured plates in 1841, is "one of the most original, authentic and popular works on the subject" (Sabin). "The history and the customs of such a people," Catlin wrote, "preserved by pictorial illustrations, are themes worthy of the lifetime of one man, and nothing short of the loss of my life, shall prevent me from becoming their historian" (Hassrick).

        Mashenka].

Berlin Slovo 1926 - 8vo., (20 x 14 cm.), 169 pp., 6pp. of advertisements, modern green calf, facsimile paper label after the original window-mounted to front cover, original wrappers bound in at rear, edges untrimmed, as published, fine. A lovely copy of the rare first edition of Nabokov's first novel, a partly autobiographical work set during the peak of the Russian emigration to Berlin in 1924, it contains descriptions of the young Nabokov's first serious romance as well as that of the Nabokov family estate. The story unfolds from a Berlin boarding- house filled with an assortment of eccentric Russian émigrés. Lev Ganin, an energetic young officer poised between his past and his future, relives his first love affair. His memories of Mary are suffused with the freshness of youth and the idyllic ambience of pre-revolutionary Russia. In stark contrast is the decidedly unappealing boarder living in the room next to Ganin's, who, he discovers, is Mary's husband, temporarily separated from her by the Revolution but expecting her imminent arrival from Russia. The contemporary critic A. S. Izgoev wrote of the work: "This is a page not only in the biography of a young author, but also in the history of Russian literature, and not merely its émigré branch. Mashenka has about it something of the national self-awareness of the Russian intelligentsia" (quoted by Andrew Field, Nabokov: His Life in Art). After attending a reading another critic, Yuli Aykhenvald, declared Nabokov 'a new Turgenev'. Rare: we could trace only two copies at auction in over 35 years. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        The Prophet

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1926. Hardcover. This is a scarce, early Deluxe Holiday Edition of one the best-selling books of the 20th century. Condition is good plus. The original gold foil paper boards show scuffing, as is typical of this edition. The paper covered spine shows some loss at the ends, as do the paper-covered corners. The binding is nonetheless square and tight. The contents are printed on heavy, watermarked, laid paper with untrimmed fore and bottom edges and gilt top edge, and are printed with ornamental drop caps at the beginning of each section and twelve full-page collotype illustrations by the author. (This is the first edition to include the authorÂ’s illustrations.) The contents are notably clean, free of any spotting. The sole previous ownership mark is a small previous owner sticker affixed to the lower front pastedown with an inked name and number across it. The top edge gilt remains bright. All illustrations are present. The sole interior defect noted is a roughly cut signature at page 84 (the final page of text), leaving both that leaf and the following with rough edges. Since its first publication in 1923, The Prophet has never been out of print. It has reportedly been translated into more than 50 languages, gone through over 160 printings, and more than 100 million copies have sold. Its author, Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931), is the third best-selling poet of all time behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu. These numbers are all the more astonishing considering the unlikely circumstances into which Gibran was born. As a child of poverty in northern Mount Lebanon (then a semi-autonomous part of the Ottoman Empire), Gibran received no formal education during his youth. Upon the imprisonment of his gambler father for embezzlement, Gibran's mother decided to join her brother in the United States. Once settled in a Lebanese community in Boston, Gibran began school enrolled in a class for immigrants as well as art school. Desiring to further his abilities in art, Gibran enrolled in Académie Julian in Paris at the age of 25 where he developed the symbolist style visible in his later illustrations for The Prophet. Influenced by the Eastern Catholic religion he was raised in, Sufi mysticism, and Gibran's meeting with a leader of the Bahá'í Faith, The Prophet is a series of 26 prose poems covering a variety of topics on the human condition. Despite popular reception, The Prophet found little praise from western critics. Irrespective, the The Prophet has enjoyed a wide cultural influence. The book experienced a resurgence in popularity when the counterculture of the 1960s took up the book as a universally accessible spiritual text free of dogma and encouraging unity. The text influenced people as varied as Elvis, JFK, The Beatles, and David Bowie.

        L'Ardenne Mysterieuse

1926. First Edition . Signed. BANNEUX, Louis. LÂ’Ardenne Mystérieuse. Prix de Littérature de Brabant, 1925. Bruxelles: J. Lebègue & Cie., 1926. Tall octavo, original printed pictorial self-wrappers, uncut, original glassine. Housed in custom full morocco slipcase. $1650.First edition, number 22 of only 100 copies issued, with 16 lovely woodcut-style illustrations by Alfred Martin as well as an extra suite of the illustrations. This copy signed and presented by 38 members of the staff and faculty of the Royal Conservatory of Liege to honorary director, Belgian conductor and composer Sylvain Dupuis.Born in Liège, recipient Sylvain Dupuis was trained at the Royal Conservatory there. After graduating in 1878, he was appointed to that schoolÂ’s faculty as a professor, ultimately going on to become Director in 1911. Among his notable pupils were Hubert de Blanck and Charles Houdret. Dupuis worked actively as a composer during the early part of his career, winning the Belgian Prix de Rome for his cantata Le Chant de la Création in 1879 and composing two operas in the 1880s: Moîna and Coûr dÂ’Ognon. With his 1890 appointment to the conducting staff at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, he began to devote more of his energy to his work as an opera conductor. In 1900 he assumed the role of principal conductor at that house, where he conducted its first productions of such operas as Götterdämmerung (1891), Die Entführung aus dem Serail (1902), Tosca (1904), La Damnation de Faust (1906), Madama Butterfly (1909), Elektra (1910) and Roma (1913), among others. The work, presented to him by the faculty and staff of the conservatory at a banquet in honor of his long, loyal and fruitful career in service to the Royal Conservatory, is a collection of folktales from the heavily forested Ardennes region of Belgium and France. The presentation inscription reads: “La Direction, le Corps Professoral et lÂ’Administration du Conservatoire Royal de Musique de Liège à son directeur honoraire: Monsieur Sylvain Dupuis, 12 Juin 1926.” Text in French. Two of the volumes are string-tied cloth, one with an embroidered dragon illustration on the front board, the other is textured leather over paper boards. Contains 455 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1.5" and 6" x 8" with some captions. All volumes near fine with slight edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by Noelie Frances Gutierrez between 1926 and 1946 while living in China. The albums are a collection of family, school, and later military photos compiled by Noelie during her childhood and early adulthood. All the captions are written in English and it is assumed they were Americans stationed in China or that she moved to America after the war. The photos are not kept in complete chronological order but cover two decades of Noelie's life. A large part of her young life was involved with the Coy Guides, a Chinese version of the Girl Scouts. There are photos of the girls in uniform, picnicking, and camping. The girls are seen in group photos in uniform with the 4th Company of the Coy Guides. Noelie's father, who is seen throughout the albums, was a military man sometimes referred to as "Captain Daddy" by Noelie. There are photos of a military base, a few portrait photographs of Mr. Gutierrez, and one of a uniformed man in a bike taxi. The family photos show Noelie and her family around their family homes. One section of photos shows Noelie's first communion in 1936 with photos of her in her white dress and a procession with a statue of the Virgin Mary. In one album a trip to Shanghai is documented with photos of Noelie standing by the Embankment building and a group posing in a garden. The last few pages of one of the albums contains a collection of photostrip portraits of Noelie's family and friends with some signed and dedicated to her. One photo of a destroyed city street has a stamp on the verso saying it is property of "North China Daily News."The final album shows Noelie, with her family apparently still stationed in China, posed with a young soldier during World War II. The album focuses on war related imagery including barracks, an airstrip, ships in a harbor, and soldiers surrounding the 701st MP, Provost Marshals, HQ 5. A series of sweet portrait photos of Noelie and her soldier beau is featured here with the two of them looking cute and in love. The album shows photos of Noelie posing on a mini-golf course and with friends. Later in the album there are photos of a military medal ceremony with soldiers standing at attention and being presented with accolades. After these there is a section of photos showing a fire with images of men on ladders and with water hoses trying to abate the crisis. Men are seen posing around the barracks with military jeeps, enjoying leisurely activities such as playing games in the yard, and working on equipment. One photo shows a man working at a large desk in an office in the barracks. The men are photographed in candids as well as portraits and in group shots. An interesting collection of a young woman's life in China beginning in the 1920s and going through World War II. .
