Le Statut de Kalisz [The Statue of Kalisz].

Paris Table Ronde -1928 1926 - Folio, 38 x 32 cm; 46 leaves (leaf 19 bound twice). Chromolithographs with silver and gold highlights, printed on one side of the paper, in colours throughout. Original brown calf with publisher's gilt and embossed medallion on front cover. Signed and stamped by the author on leaf 45 (leaves unnumbered). Text in French, Polish, English, Hebrew, Yiddish, German, Italian and Spanish. Fine example of this scarce work, published in a limited edition of 500 copies. Considered to be one of Szyk's greatest creations, The Statute of Kalisz explores a significant event in Polish history in which Jews were granted civil and religious privileges commencing with the 13th century. In this work Szyk also emphasised the contributions which Jews had made to Polish society and the mutual and beneficial relationship which existed between Poles and Jews for centuries. This work must be viewed in context of Szyk's lifelong efforts to combat prejudice and especially anti-Semitism trough his art as well as through direct political activism. This context of the May 1924 coup in Poland should also be considered. Szyk believed that Joseph Pilsudski, the coup's leader, was Poland's only hope for true democracy, while current government would often officially sanction anti-Semitism. Szyk chose The Statue of Kalisz as his subject, as this was a historical precedent for fair treatment of Jews by the Polish government. The work shows scenes demonstrating mutually beneficial cooperation between Poles and Jews spreading over a perio of nine centuries. This project was the first time Szyk acted simultaneously as scribe, calligrapher and illustrator. Szyk often looked to medieval illuminated manuscripts for inspiration for his dense colourful imagery. The work includes elaborately illustrated translations of the original Latin text of the laws to French, Polish, English, Hebrew, Yiddish, German, Italian and Spanish - each on separate page.

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF EINSTEIN'S ELEGANT 'TEA LEAF PARADOX' PAPER along with his subsequent 'proposition' published in the next issue. The tea leaf paradox relates to the phenomenon wherein tea leaves in a cup "migrate to the center and bottom of the cup after being stirred rather than being forced to the edges of the cup, as would be expected in a spiral centrifuge" (Wikipedia). Einstein's solution for the most part addresses the erosion of river banks rather than tea leafs; regardless, he repudiates Baer's law which stated that the formation of rivers is influenced by the earth's rotation. "Read first before the Prussian Academy of Sciences on January 7, this paper discussed why the erosion of rivers tends to occur on the right bank in the Northern Hemisphere and on the left in the Southern Hemisphere. Having found no one who was thoroughly familiar with the causal relations involved, Einstein decided to tackle the problem himself" (Calaprice, Einstein Almanac, 132). Einstein from his 1926 article "Imagine a flat bottomed cup full of tea. At the bottom there are some tea leaves, which stay there because they are rather heavier than the liquid they have displaced. If the liquid is made to rotate by a spoon, the leaves will soon collect in the center of the bottom of the cup." "The basic idea is that contrary to what one would think at first, it is the fluid which along with the tea leaves experience a Centrifugal force which cause it to rotate. This is itself would have had no effect, but the friction on the edges slows the fluid in those regions, creating a pressure vortex kind of situation. This causes the centrifugal force which is proportional to the speed to be small at the bottom (due to the bottom surface) than above which creates a circular movement in the vertical direction as the image is showing us which keeps on increasing more and more albeit the friction slowly pushes it into a stationary state. It is because of this complicated movement of the fluid in the vertical direction that causes the tea leaves which are moving through the liquid to collect at the center. "Einstein, in the same paper then goes on to explain a phenomenon by this concept that had been hitherto left unanswered. To quote him, "It is common knowledge that streams tend to curve in serpentine shapes instead of following the line of the maximum declivity of the ground. It is also well known to geographers that the rivers of the northern hemisphere tend to erode chiefly on the right side. The rivers of the southern hemisphere behave in the opposite manner (Baer's law). Many attempts have been made to explain this phenomenon, and I am not sure whether anything I say in the following pages will be new to the expert; some of my considerations are certainly known. Nevertheless, having found nobody who was thoroughly familiar with the causal relations involved, I think it is appropriate to give a short qualitative exposition of them" (Physics de Pristine, 2011). The paper was published in the 12 March 1926 issue of Die Naturwissenschaften, an issue dedicated to Emil Warburg, a German physicist and a friend of Einstein. Warburg's research was primarily in the kinetic theory of gases, electrical conductivity, the discharge of gas, heat radiation, ferromagnetism and photochemistry. CONDITION & DETAILS: Berlin: Julius Springer. Original wraps, complete March and April 1926 issues. 4to. (9.75 x 7.5 inches; 187 x 262mm). Heft 14 has a pencilled ownership name on the front wrap, otherwise both are bright and clean inside and out. Near fine condition.

[Piano-vocal score]

Milano: G. Ricordi & C. [PN 119772], 1926. First Edition of the first version. Hopkinson 12A. Schickling 91.E.1. Turandot, to a libretto by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni after Carlo Gozzi's dramatic fairy-tale, was first performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on April 25, 1926. "There is no Italian opera, before Turandot, in which such an organic attempt is made to integrate music and drama... Puccini was now at the height of his powers, inventing colouristic effects which are violent and jewel-like at the same time... Unfortunately Puccini did not complete his last masterpiece, but if he had lived he would have worked to remove every incongruity, as he had done on other occasions. We are left with a splendid and exceptionally extensive ?fragment', produced by an artist at the peak of his creative and intellectual form." Turandot, to a libretto by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni after Carlo Gozzi's dramatic fairy-tale, was first performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan on April 25, 1926. We are left with a splendid and exceptionally extensive 'fragment', produced by an artist at the peak of his creative and intellectual form." Gabriella Biagi Ravenni and Michele Girardi in Grove Music Online.

Das Kunstarchiv Verlag, Berlin 1926 - Quarto. 36pp. Original printed wrappers. Catalog published on the occasion of an exhibition of paintings and drawings by George Grosz, held during the Spring of 1926 in Berlin, at the Galerie Alfred Flechtheim.* This catalog features 24 duo-tone and b/w photographic reproductions. Upper corners bumped, thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Text in German, gothic script, with one of the four essays in French. Wrappers in overall good- to good, interior in good+ to very good condition. * Alfred Flechtheim (1878-1937) was a German art dealer, art collector, journalist and publisher. Flechtheim appeared in the art world shortly after 1900, with a collection of paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne; French Avant garde early works of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and André Derain; paintings of Wassily Kandinsky, Maurice de Vlaminck, Alexej von Jawlensky, Gabriele Münter, and the Rhein Expressionists Heinrich Campendonk, August Macke, Heinrich Nauen (de), and Paul Adolf Seehaus (de). Flechtheim opened his first gallery in Düsseldorf in 1913, followed by galleries in Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, and Vienna. Flechtheim served in the German Army during World War I, but not at the front. His art business collapsed during the war but he re-opened in Düsseldorf in 1919. In 1921 he founded "Der Querschnitt" (the Cross Section), a cultural magazine. Legendary, glamorous parties in Flechtheim's gallery overflowed with the glitterati of the new Berlin: movie stars, titans of finance, prizefighters and artists of every stripe. As Hitler rose to power in the late 1920s and early 1930s, Flechtheim became a bête noire because of the art he espoused and championed. In 1933, Sturmabteilung men broke up an auction of Flechtheim's paintings. The Nazis aryanized Flechtheim's gallery, as they would many other Jewish businesses, and turned it over to Flechtheim's business manager, Alex Vömel. After the war, former party member Vömel said he didn't even remember who Flechtheim was. The Nazis seized and sold off Flechtheim's private collection, as well as the contents of his gallery. Emigration and Death Six months after the Nazis came to power in 1933, Flechtheim, penniless, fled to Paris, and tried to find work with his former business partner, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. Flechtheim subsequently organized exhibits in London of the paintings of exiled German artists. In London, Flechtheim slipped on a patch of ice, was taken to a hospital, punctured his leg on a rusty nail in his hospital bed, developed septicemia leading to amputation of his leg, and died. For this edition Hardy revised his novels throughout for the last time In a 'General Preface to the Novels and Poems', dated October 1911 and printed in Vol. I, he explained his classification of his novels here adopted for the first time (revealing his estimate of their relative merits) and offered a brief apologia for his work. This is an essay of primary importance The Wessex Edition is in every sense the definitive edition of Hardy's work and the last authority in questions of text" (Purdy). Volumes 1-18 make up the novels and volumes 19-23 the poetry; a further volume was published posthumously in 1931 but is not included within this set. Purdy, pp. 282–286.

Provenance: Colonel Daniel Sickles, bookplate, his sale Paris, 1962-63; with Pierre Berès (sale Paris, Bergé, part 4, 20 June 2006, lot 160).*** A superb geometric binding by Pierre Legrain, on one of the most celebrated of modern artists' books. The Cranach Virgil was the result of a collaboration between the Catalan sculptor Aristide Maillol, Count Harry Kessler, Eric Gill, and other book artisans, which lasted nearly a decade. Maillol and Kessler conceived the idea for this volume while visiting Greece together in 1912. Maillol cut the woodcuts in 1912-1914 in his native village of Banyuls, near the Spanish border. As explained in Kessler's long colophon, the artist drew on local customs (dances) and monuments for inspiration. This was the first of several editions of classical texts illustrated by Maillol. The type was designed by Edward Prince, based on types used by Nicolas Jenson in the 1470s. The wove hemp paper was handmade by Aristide's nephew Gaspard Maillol in a small studio on the road between Marly-le-Roi and Montval (and came to be known as papier de Montval). After all this work, the war came, and the edition was not completed until the mid-1920s, when it was issued in German, English, and French editions. This beautiful copy was exhibited in Paris at the Bibliothèque nationale in 1947, at the Exposition de la Société de la reliure originale. Garvey & Hofer, The Artist and the Book 172; Riva Castleman, A Century of Artists Books, 110; Rewald, The Woodcuts of Aristide Maillol, 8-52.
