Le Baccara. Préface par Jules Romains.

Paris, Chez L'artiste. 1926 - S.d. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Mills & Boon, London 1926 - First edition. Octavo. 136, 16 ads pp., plates. Green cloth. A slight bump on the front board, very good or better without dustwrapper. Inscribed by one of the co-authors: "To George Standing in grateful remembrance of the pleasure of meeting. Clarence N. Bruce. Jan. 1928." Not to be confused with either tennis or squash, rackets or racquets is an indoor racquet sport played in the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada. The sport is infrequently called "hard rackets," possibly to distinguish it from the related sport of squash (formerly called "squash rackets").

Document Signed ("Theodore Dreiser") three times, agreement with Famous Players-Lasky Corporation, also signed by Jesse Lasky, of the Players-Lansky corporation

[Hollywood] 1926 - Carbon typescript, 6 pp., with 2 ink corrections, signed by Dreiser in the margin. 4to. Dreiser Sells the Movie Rights to AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY. Dreiser sells the film rights to his classic novel for $80,000. Interestingly, Horace Liveright - Dreiser's publisher - was to receive the sum of $10,000, which, In the initial version of this contract, was to be paid by "The Seller" (i.e., Dreiser); that small detail was corrected by hand in this copy to "The Purchaser" (i.e., Lasky) -- and the correction duly signed and approved "OK Theodore Dreiser" in the margin! The first treatment of Dreiser's classic was written in the late 20s by the Russian master, Sergei Eisenstein, who was actually hired by Lasky to come to Hollywood in 1930 to direct a film. Untimately, however, Eisenstein proved incompatible with the more commericial orientation of Hollywood, and the first film version appeared in 1931, directed by Josef Von Sternberg - a film version which Dreiser strongly disapproved of. A second version was film in 1951 starring Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor, entitled "A Place in the Sun". Bound with brads In blue wrappers stamped, numbered, and dated by the Legal Dept of the Players-Lasky Corporation, with typed title on upper cover: "THEODORE DREISER | with | FAMOUS PLAYERS - LASKY CORPORATION | Agreement.         Soldiers' Pay

New York: Boni & Liveright, 1926. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-. First Printing, one of only 2500 copies, of the author's first novel. 8vo: 319,[1]pp. Publisher's navy blue cloth, spine and upper cover stamped in yellow, fore-edge untrimmed, stylized blue and white vine-patterned end papers, title page in red and black. A beautiful, crisp, fresh copy, hinges sound and uncracked, pages clean, bright and unmarked, excepting manuscript ex-libris to half-title and verso of front fly leaf, and these trivial faults: one dog-ear, one leaf edge vertically creased, thin one-inch streak to upper cover, otherwise spotless. Without the scarce dust jacket. Petersen A2.1. In 1925, Faulkner moved to New Orleans where he joined a literary circle centered on Sherwood Anderson and was introduced to the modernist innovations of T. S. Eliot and James Joyce. His interest in experimental writing was piqued, and he began a novel, his first, Soldiers' Pay, portraying the tragic homecoming of a wounded war hero. Though set in Georgia, it was, nonetheless, a kind of rehearsal for the later Mississippi novels, full of despair and "mythic motifs of impotence and futile love." (Literary Encyclopedia) Andersen recommended the book for publication, without having ever read it. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. In 1921, Faulkner worked briefly in a New York bookstore, where he met Elizabeth Prall, who later married Sherwood Anderson. That led to an apprenticeship with Anderson when Faulkner moved to New Orleans in 1925. "In a starry literary circle [Faulkner] was inspired to experiment with prose pieces, many of which he published in the New Orleans Picayune and the fledgling literary journal, The Double Dealer. Friends acquainted him with Freud, the mythic world of the anthropologist Sir James Frazer's Golden Bough, and most importantly, the modernist innovations of T. S. Eliot and James Joyce. Faulkner's absorbed interest in experimental writing proceeded apace; building on his brief published pieces in local venues, he began a novel, Soldiers' Pay, which portrayed the tragic homecoming of a fatally wounded war hero. Set in Georgia, it was, nonetheless a kind of rehearsal for the later Mississippi novels. Full of despair and "fisher-king" mythic motifs of impotence and futile love, the novel focussed on the returning veteran, Mahon, who is accompanied by a fellow soldier and a young widow, both met on the homeward bound train. Mahon's heartless flapper fiancé, another woman he has deserted, a jaded, randy intellectual and Mahon's minister father complete a cast that plays out a tragic story of a sterile postwar world in which old loyalties and values seem to mean little. Anderson, who had promised Faulkner he would get the book in print if he didn't have to read it, came through, and the novel was published in 1926." (Literary Encyclopedia).

        Untitled Abstraction

      - Untitled abstract on Masonite (which Rexroth referred to as "Beaver Board"), 12 1/4" wide x 17 3/8" high, ca. 1926, with a double frame (inner frame is glazed and is by Rexroth, outer frame is contemporary and executed to style). Some minor surface abrasion at top-edge (perhaps from the frame), otherwise in fine condition. Some minor surface abrasion at top-edge (perhaps from the frame), otherwise in fine condition In 1944 Rexroth specified on the back of a photo of this painting what is the top and the bottom. He dated it "1926" and noted the colors: "blues, yellows on blue and blue green, white and black circles." The composition uses Mondrian's palette of primaries with black and white, and is a good example of Rexroth's use of solar and lunar polarities (the white and black circles) combined with the magnet form, which also carries the association of musical notation (as in linked eighth notes). Rexroth was particularly interested in music because (like mathematics) its complex interrelationships are recorded in a precise, universal notation. San Francisco Museum of Art label on the back, title given is "Abstraction"; date "in" is "6/29/42". There is a remnant of another label on the back, the little bit of text remaining is illegible.

Paris & Brussels, G. Vanoest, 1926. - 3 volumes. VI, 73, [3 blank]; [3], [1 blank]; [3], [1 blank] pp. With 12 plans and 2 maps (mostly folding), and a total of 274 plates with heliotypes. Publisher's original, printed, blue paper wrappers. First edition in French of a work on the imperial palaces of Beijing by the Finnish-born Swedish art historian and professor Osvald Sirén (1879-1966). Besides the Italian Renaissance, Sirén was very interested in Chinese art and culture, and wrote various books on the subject, mostly in English. The photographs were all taken by Sirén himself, and he wrote an accompanying 40-page introduction on the so-called "Forbidden City", with two small chapters on the seaside and summer palaces. The heliotypes show mostly palaces, some from several angles, but also monuments, pavilions, statues, interiors and gardens, with short descriptions in both French and English. They give a unique view of the city in the early 20th century, since some of the buildings have vanished or are now settled in completely different surroundings. An English edition appeared simultaneous by the same publisher. - With a bookplate in each volume of W.A.S. Swets (1902-92). Minor foxing throughout, original paper wrappers heavily discoloured. Overall a good copy, wholly untrimmed and with the bolts unopened. R. Thiriez, Barbarian Lens: Western Photographers of the Qianlong Emperor's European Palaces, p. 182.         [RODCHENKO'S DESIGN FOR MAYAKOVSKY'S TRAVEL NOTES ABOUT AMERICA] Moe otkrytie Ameriki [i.e. My Discovery of America]

Moscow; Leningrad: GIZ, 1926. 142, [2] pp.: ill. 18x10 cm. Original wrappers designed by Alexander Rodchenko. Very good. Minor loss of the spine from the edges. First edition. One of 3000 copies. Scarce! One of the rarer Mayakovsky/Rodchenko books. The book contains the notes from poet's trip to America and Mexico in 1925 that tend to show the countries from tougher side. The pictures from the trips are included in the edition as well. The wrapper designed by long-time Mayakovsky's collaborator Rodchenko can be called the classic of constructivist design. Mayakovsky disliked America long before he saw it. The lines summarizing the trip - «I would close America, lightly cleaned it, and then opened it again - for the second time» - he wrote on the way to America aboard the steamer. But in New York Mayakovsky came to life. The meeting with David Burliuk was very emotional. He liked the city very much, and he fell in love with lonely walks in Manhattan. Finally, he found a new love, Ellie Jones, who was from Volga Germans and gave birth to their daughter. Hellyer 325; The Russian Avant-Garde Book 656.

THE BAT: A NOVEL FROM THE PLAY BY MARY ROBERTS RINEHART AND AVERY HOPWOOD

In 1920 Rinehart's 1908 mystery thriller THE CIRCULAR STAIRCASE was adapted into a very popular play, The Bat, by Rinehart and Avery Hopwood. The 1926 silent film, The Bat, directed by Roland West and starring Jack Pickford and Louise Fazenda, was based on Rinehart and Hopwood's play. The play was also the basis for a 1930 film, The Bat Whispers, which features a black shrouded arch-criminal. Comic-book creator Bob Kane said in his 1989 autobiography BATMAN AND ME that the villain of the 1930 film The Bat Whispers was an inspiration for his character Batman. A fine copy in fine four-color movie tie-in dust jacket with a scene from the film on the front and spine panels. (#152736)

Diletant. Dekhorathiven roman [Dilettante or The garden with mannequins. Decorative novel]

Strelets [Archer], Sofia 1926 - First edition, Sofia, Strelets. 170/120 mm, 203+1 p. Chavdar Mutafov is inspired of Carl Einstein's novel "Bebuquin or dilettantes of wonder". Dilettante is published by "Strelets", the publisher who also issued "Strelets" magazine, which editor is Chavdar Mutafov. The front cover is one of Dechko Uzunov's masterpieces. See: Domenico Jacono's "Bulgarian modernism", N 34, p.44. Very good - uncut and unread copy, strong covers, spine and sheets. Would be almost excellent but there is few small shortcomings - a small foxing dots on the covers; two slightly bumped corner; slightly folded back cover. The pictures shows real color etc. - the deference with the colors are due to two last pictures are taken by camera, but previous 3 with scanner. In fact - the deference is between artificial light and natural daylight. Our images aren't splendid, but are true. We stay available for any question and extra pictures on request.         In Yiddish:] Literarishe Revi. (Eynmoliker numer). Red. Oyzer Varshavski. Perets Markish, Y. Y. Zinger, Ilya Erenburg, Itsik Fefer, Oyzer Varshavski, L. Kenig, E. Finigberg, L. Blumenfeld, Sh. Gidal. Tseykhnungen fun Mark Shagal

[S.n.] (Imp. d'art Voltaire), Paris 1926 - Illustrated with reproductions of seven drawings (of which one full page) by Marc Chagall. First edition, first number, complete run. In publisher's printed wrappers. 31, (1) p. Marc Chagall-illustrated, scarce Yiddish avant-garde literary review, the first and only number of the last glint of "Di Khalyastre" movement. "Literarishe Revi" was edited by Ozer Warshavsky, the modernist, avant-garde Yiddish writer, the co-editor and creator of the second almanac of the "Di Khalyastre" (Paris, 1924), and contributor to the last issue of Uri Zvi Greenberg's Yiddish Expressionist magazine the "Albatros" (Berlin, 1923). Warshavsky (1898-1945) started his literary career in his home country Poland in the mid-1910s and his first book, the very well received "Shmuglars" (Smugglers) was published in 1920. He became an active contributor to various Yiddish magazines and other publications in Poland (In di berg; Khalyastre I.), London (Di tsayt), New York (Tsukunft) and in Berlin (Albatros). Warshavsky left Poland in 1923, and after a short stay in Berlin, and London, he settled down in Paris. There he joined the Paris-members of the Khalyastre (Gang), one of the major Polish Yiddish avant-garde movements, rooted in the Yung-Yiddish circle led by Peretz Markish, and co-edited its second almanac, which was entirely illustrated by Marc Chagall. With the same artists and other major Yiddish writers including Ilya Ehrenburg and Itzik Feffer Warshavsky edited this single-issue literary magazine, "Literarishe Revi". Besides the writings of Markish, Ehrenburg, and Feffer, it contains texts by Israel Joshua Singer, Leo Kenig, Ezra Fininberg, Zev (Lupus) Blumenfeld, Sh. Gidal, and Warshavsky's essay on Chagall, and a chapter of his novel "Shnittsayt" (The Harvest). The magazine was illustrated with seven reproductions of Marc Chagall's drawings, among them one full page illustration and a self-portrait of the artist. Scarce, we could trace only five copies in institutional holdings worldwide. Wrappers artistically restored. In fine condition. In publisher's printed wrappers First edition, first number, complete run. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
