        La Petite Ville

      A rare, enriched presentation example. The wrappers, preserved in pristine condition, are bound into an exceptional fore-edge vellum binding decorated with two watercolor paintings finely executed directly on the vellum, one on each side. The richness and luminosity of the painted surfaces is arresting; "No paper can ... lend such translucency and richness to watercolor." [John McEwan] The paintings on vellum were done by the Vicomte Max de Beauregard in the year the book was issued, as documented by his signature with date on the rear of the painting on the upper side. The presentation by Yan Dyl is made with a brush on the flyleaf and establishes he was a guest of Max de Beauregard. The example is also signed by the prominent art dealer, collector, and publisher, Daniel Kahnweiler, in his guise as Simon Kra, on the illustrated colophon. BOOK ILLUSTRATIONS: "La Petite Ville" is a remarkable and distinctive work of illustration from the 1920s when there was a great creative outpouring of the book arts in France, under the influence of what has come to be called Art Deco (applied modernism). The illustrations incorporate elements of cubism and are characterized by cut-off composition frames and distorted perspectives, sustaining Yan Dyl's theme of the past manifesting in the present, as repression and furtive theater. Twenty illustrations are pochoir plates without text and follow the 20 descriptive legends on interleaves. Two pochoirs with letters precede the body of the work and introduce its themes. One decorates the upper side of the wrappers: another decorates the half-title leaf and is beautifully lettered with the sub-title, "Avenir Ennui" (Future Trouble). A final illustration, a b/w vignette, decorates the colophon leaf. THE PAINTINGS: in black, rose, charcoal and gray were done with watercolor paints applied directly to the vellum, their application requiring dry brush technique because of calfskin's lack of absorbency. The larger painting on the upper side shows a view of old Foix, (the castle on its heights dates to the 10th century), with stone walls, battlements, and tall narrow houses with sharply sloped red roofs with overhanging eaves. In the foothills of the French Pyrénées, Foix is at the crossroads of ancient pilgrimage routes, to Santiago de Compostela in Spain and Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Houses and town square are laid out below the distinctive medieval castle and crossing tower, set off by black and rose crossing bands that symbolize the town was a halt for pilgrims. There is a powerful sense of history and enclosed space and the castle and town buildings press on two elderly people seen in conversation in the town square and two barely glimpsed figures in second story windows. The oval vignette painted on the lower side employs Yan Dyl's visual syntax and its composition with tower and black lunettes explicitly summons and plays off the Yan Dyl composition on the upper wrapper with its sense of distorted time and space. PUBLISHING NOTE: The pochoirs, after watercolors are done on one side of the leaves by Les Ateliers Jacomet, this example noted as h.c. (hors commerce, not for sale and reserved for collaborators and presentation). FORMAT: Publisher's blue and green flock paper wrappers, the upper side decorated with a striking pochoir with applied gold leaf, the wrappers bound into a pictorial vellum binding with the top edge rolled in gold leaf, quarto sewn with a beige and brown striped headband, brown silk book ribbon sewn in, additional blank leaves inserted. SIZE: 291 x 185 mm. YAN DYL [1887-1944]: illustrated five books between 1926 and 1928 and was a friend of the artist, Robert Delaunay. Published in an edition of 170 copies for subscribers this is one of the 32 incomplete copies inscribed and initialled by Lawrence (Shaw) "Incomplete copy, 1.xii.26. TES". The incomplete copies lack some of the colour plates only, text and textual illustrations complete. Bound in half maroon morocco by De Coverly with elaborate gilt decoration to the spine and raised bands. All edges gilt. Endpapers by Eric Kennington. 58 text illustrations by John, Kennington, Williams Roberts, Paul Nash, Blair Hughes-Stanton, William Nicholson and others. Four fold-out colour maps (two maps duplicated). An attractive and fine copy, all housed in a custom made half morocco drop front box that echoes the binding of the volume. The author's magnum opus and famous account of his part in the Arab Revolt of 1916. This manuscript, written over a period from 1919 originally ran to over 400,000 words, and Lawrence had this printed at the Oxford Times in 1922 in an edition of 8 copies and then in 1926 issued the Subscriber's or Cranwell edition. Printed by Manning Pike and Herbert Hodgson, Lawrence supervised the production at every stage and had copies bound at various leading fine binders of the day. Lawrence stated that the text would not be made publicly available in his lifetime. However, of financial necessity he authorised Jonathan Cape to publish a heavily abridged version under the title of Revolt in the Desert in 1927, which stirred public interest to induce Cape to publish most of the full text within two months of Lawrence's death in 1935. A superb copy and a rare opportunity to obtain one of the scarcest of all editions of this work. Possibly unrecorded variant of one of the three scarce Antwerp editions published in the same year as the first edition by Joos Lambrecht at Ghent in 1539, of an account of a so-called "Landjuweel", a rhetoricians' festival organized in Ghent in June 1539. They were organized by the chamber "De H. Drievuldicheyt" of Ghent and the 19 participating chambers from different cities each presented a play answering the question: "What is of the most comfort for somebody who is dying?" It was the first time that the texts of the plays were published immediately after the festival. The texts breathe the spirit of the Reformation and the book was banned in 1540.The sequence of the three editions is not certain and the differences are minimal. Our copy has the title as described in Nijhoff & Kronenberg 3890, but contains a variant in the colophon: "xxv. Octob." instead of "xv. Octob.". This variant is described in the literature only as part of the other Antwerp editions, but because the variations in the title concern only abbreviations, many libraries may have catalogued copies improperly. Another edition appeared in 1564 in Wesel by Hans de Braecker.Title-page soiled, slip of paper pasted over an erased library stamp in the lower margin of the second leaf, a few minor dampstains and small wormhole in the last leaves.         Autograph letter signed "Lehár Fr" to the celebrated soprano Maria Jeritza

      "Liebe, du Himmel auf Erden" is an aria from Lehár's operetta Paganini (1926), made into a film in 1934. Maria Jeritza performed the song as part of a shortwave broadcast for an American audience in 1935. Lehár's operetta Schön ist die Welt was first performed in 1930 (a revision of his earlier work Endlich allein, 1914). Like other successful composers of the era, Léhar was close to Maria Jeritza (1887-1982), the most celebrated soprano from the final years of the Habsburg empire. She appeared regularly at the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1921 on.. In blue ink on the verso of a postal card with unidentified motif; printed credits to "Phot. Ing. F Mayer." Dated September 29, 1935. In German (with translation). Lehár thanks his correspondent (who is not named but may be identified by circumstantial evidence as the soprano Maria Jeritza) for her interpretation of the song "Liebe du Himmel auf Erden" (Love, you heaven on earth) from his operetta Paganini. He is looking forward to seeing her as Tosca soon. He announces that he will travel to Paris imminently to attend a performance of his operetta Schön ist die Welt: "Still under the spell of the song 'Liebe du Himmel auf Erden' so wonderfully rendered by you I am writing you this letter, and I thank you cordially for the artistic enjoyment... Early next week I will travel to Paris. Schön ist die Welt is going to be performed at the Theâtre Paisé Lyrique." From the collection of Maria Jeritza. Upper joint wholly split, so upper cover only attached where it folds around the edges of the first gathering. A bit cocked, spine worn and chipped with some surface peeling, edges tattered with numerous small closed tears and upper fore-edge splitting.There have been at least 18 editions of Ulysses, each with variations in different impressions. Here we find the eighth printing of the first edition, with the 'type entirely re-set', so de facto the second edition. An uncommon find in its original paper wrappers.

First trade edition of this modern verse bestiary, illustrated with wood engravings by Leon Underwood, "one of the founding fathers of British Modernism" (Telegraph). Best remembered for his African-inspired sculpture, Underwood mastered a wide range of media, and was one of the founders of the English Wood Engraving Society in 1925. The rich black images here are accompanied by nonsense verse in the tradition of Edward Lear and Hilaire Belloc: "The wily serpent never spoils / The appearance of his motive coils / By using lubricating oils." Issued simultaneously with a signed limited edition of twenty-eight copies. A fine copy of a striking book, reflecting the artistic revival of English wood engraving between the wars. (8 1/2 x 5 3/4). SIGNED at the end by the participants: Charles Erskine Scott Wood (who wrote the text), Anne Cobden-Sanderson, Edwin Grabhorn, Robert Grabhorn, Albert M. Bender, Henry H. Taylor, Katharine Field Ehrgott, and J. J. Neuberger. Also signed in pencil on first blank page by fine printer Helen Gentry who worked for the Grabhorns at the time. The wrappers are separated at spine and slightly worn at edges, else contents fine. Anne Cobden-Sanderson (1853- 1926), distinguished British feminist who went to jail in London for her suffragist activities in the early 1900's, was married to the famed fine press printer, T. J. Cobden-Sanderson (1840-1922). Charles Erskine Scott Wood (1852-1944) was a noted San Francisco writer and anarchist; Albert M. Bender (1866-1941) was a Jewish philanthropist in San Francisco noted for his support of the arts; Henry H. Taylor was a fine printer of the firm Taylor & Taylor in San Francisco; Katharine Field Ehrgott was the daughter by a previous marriage of feminist Sara Bard Field Ehrgott (1882-1974), who lived with Charles Erskine Scott Wood.         Autograph letter signed "Lehár Fr" to the celebrated soprano Maria Jeritza

      1926. "Liebe, du Himmel auf Erden" is an aria from Lehár's operetta Paganini (1926), made into a film in 1934. Maria Jeritza performed the song as part of a shortwave broadcast for an American audience in 1935. Lehár's operetta Schön ist die Welt was first performed in 1930 (a revision of his earlier work Endlich allein, 1914). Like other successful composers of the era, Léhar was close to Maria Jeritza (1887-1982), the most celebrated soprano from the final years of the Habsburg empire. She appeared regularly at the Metropolitan Opera in New York from 1921 on.. In blue ink on the verso of a postal card with unidentified motif; printed credits to "Phot. Ing. F Mayer." Dated September 29, 1935. In German (with translation).Lehár thanks his correspondent (who is not named but may be identified by circumstantial evidence as the soprano Maria Jeritza) for her interpretation of the song "Liebe du Himmel auf Erden" (Love, you heaven on earth) from his operetta Paganini. He is looking forward to seeing her as Tosca soon. He announces that he will travel to Paris imminently to attend a performance of his operetta Schön ist die Welt:"Still under the spell of the song 'Liebe du Himmel auf Erden' so wonderfully rendered by you I am writing you this letter, and I thank you cordially for the artistic enjoyment... Early next week I will travel to Paris.
