North of Boston, inscribed by Frost with six lines of verse from The Black Cottage and dated April 1927

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1926. Later printing. Hardcover. This copy of the author's second book is inscribed with six lines verse from his poem The Black Cottage. The nine-line inscription inked on the front free endpaper reads: “For dear me why abandon a belief | Merely because it ceases to be true. | Cling to it long enough and not a doubt | It will turn true again, for so it goes. | Most of the change we think we see in life | Is due to truths being in and out of favor. (p.54 | Robert Frost | For Lesley Taylor | April 1927”. This is a remarkably relevant and timely inscription in the emerging “post-truth” era of “alternate facts” from the poet who read at President Kennedy's inauguration more than half a century ago. When first published in 1914, North of Boston was swiftly hailed by important reviews, bolstering Frost's newly minted literary reputation and precipitating his return to the United States from England, where his first two books were published. This inscribed copy is the November 1926 printing of the second edition. Condition is good plus. The publisher's quarter green cloth binding over green paper-covered boards remains square and tight. We note wear to the edges of the fragile, paper-covered boards, but the chief flaw of the binding is 4 cm split to the cloth, angling from the lower rear hinge to the edge of the lower spine. Though it does not threaten binding integrity, this aesthetic flaw prevents our grading condition as “very good” or better. The contents show moderate age-toning, most evident to the untrimmed fore edges, and light spotting, primarily confined to the half-title and frontispiece verso. The sole previous ownership mark is the decorative bookplate of “Leslie Taylor” affixed to the front pastedown – ostensibly the inscription recipient, whose name Frost apparently misspelled. Iconic American poet and four-time Pulitzer Prize winner Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963), the quintessential poetic voice of New England, was actually born in San Francisco and first published in England. When Frost was eleven, his newly widowed mother moved east to Salem, New Hampshire, to resume a teaching career. There Frost swiftly found his poetic voice, infused by New England scenes and sensibilities. Promising as both a student and writer, Frost nonetheless dropped out of both Dartmouth and Harvard, supporting himself and a young family by teaching and farming. Ironically, it was a 1912 move to England with his wife and children – “the place to be poor and to write poems” – that finally catalyzed his recognition as a noteworthy American poet. The manuscript of A Boy's Will was completed in England and published by David Nutt in 1913. “Yeats pronounced the poetry “the best written in America for some time” and Frost received “two extraordinary tributes in the Nation and the Chicago Dial and a superb review in the Academy.” (ANB) A convocation of critical recognition, introduction to other writers, and creative energy supported the English publication of Frost's second book, North of Boston, in 1914, after which “Frost's reputation as a leading poet had been firmly established in England, and Henry Holt of New York had agreed to publish his books in America.” Accolades met his return to America at the end of 1914 and by 1917 a move to Amherst “launched him on the twofold career he would lead for the rest of his life: teaching whatever “subjects” he pleased at a congenial college… and “barding around,” his term for “saying” poems in a conversational performance.” (ANB) By 1924, two years before this inscribed copy was published, Frost won the first of his eventual four Pulitzer Prizes for poetry (1931, 1937, and 1943). Frost spent the final decade and a half of his life as “the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century” with a host of academic and civic honors to his credit. Two years before his death he became the first poet to read in the program of a U.S. Presidential inauguration (Kennedy, January 1961).

The Satyricon of T. Petronius Arbiter. Burnaby's translation, 1694; with an introduction by C. K. Scott Moncrieff ; ornamented by Martin Travers.

1926 - Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. [c.1926]. 8vo., original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine (gilt however very dulled). With ornaments by Martin Travers. Slight rubbing to extremities otherwise a very good copy (without dust wrapper). Abbey Classics Series (No. 18). From the library of Christopher Isherwood with his ownership signature dated Oxford Dec 1926. The parallels between Isherwood and Petronius are compelling. The protagonist of A Single Man, Isherwood's day-in-the-life of a late-middle-aged college professor grieving the loss of his longtime lover, has been described as "the first forthright, non-neurotic, unapologetic gay character the literary world had seen since Petronius". Isherwood's earlier documentation of the Weimar Republic in his Berlin Stories mirrors the moral decline of Nero's Rome portrayed in the Satyricon. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Seven Pillars of Wisdom. A Triumph

1926 - One of nine proof copies of the 1926 ?Cranwell? or ?Subscribers? edition, this copy almost certainly copy No. 8 according to Lawrence's account, from which the first American edition of 22 copies was set in type. With many wood-engraved initial letters and 13 of the original illustrations in the text, including pasted-in India paper proofs of, at page 339 a reproduction of a drawing, possibly by Eric Kennington and evidently an abandoned version of The Prophet and, at page 564 The Glory of a young Man by Kennington. The pictorial endpapers by Kennington are present as India paper proofs partially pasted down on to endpapers. Irregular collation, with many single leaves pasted on to neighbouring pages, and four pages present as pasted-on sheets of proofing paper lacking the initial letters. The preliminaries, up to the first page of text, were evidently unbound sheets when the book was inscribed, and have been sewn later. Folio, original plain wrappers, uncut. Wrappers with signs of handling including a two inch tear, without loss, to the spine, a one inch square section lacking from the gutter of the upper cover, and other slight wear to the extremities. Some occasional foxing to the text, and signs of use consistent with having been used as setting-copy. Fine blue morocco case. [London, Privately Printed. One of the earliest copies known, with Lawrence's splendid presentation inscription to his literary agent, Raymond Savage. The inscription is a virtual letter, covering the entire endpaper and gives a full (although apparently inaccurate) description of the state of production of Seven Pillars. In addition Lawrence has added his name (TE ?Lawrence?) on the title page, with a note at the foot 'No: this was a sort of joke. The subscribers' copies will all be initialled ?TES? of course, & dated for the day of publication.'According to Lawrence's account of the publication and distribution of the 1926 edition of Seven Pillars (see Texas Quarterly Vol. 5 No. 3, 1956) there were nine proof copies bound up in advance of the final issue. Although the inscription in the present copy says ?Pike made me up two sets of spoiled proofs, in advance of the finished thing; and stitched 'em up, to make corrections etc. easier for me. . .?, Lawrence then goes on to describe a further copy. Four of the proof copies are now located: the present copy; a copy without preliminaries and title page inscribed and given to the College Library at Cranwell (NPG 222); a copy extensively edited by Lawrence and sent to George Doran for the American Revolt in the Desert (University of Texas); a further copy bearing the same revisions copied out by two aircraftsmen and sent to Cape for setting the English Revolt (NPG 243). The differences between the proof copies and the subscribers copies are described by Lawrence in the inscription: ?There are two variants in this, from the final edition as it will be sent to subscribers: but they are not important things. The text is complete: but there are missing the little abstracts of the several books which (printed in red & black) are to introduce the several editions. However, in all essentials, this is the complete text . . .? These proof copies were sent out after Lawrence had removed the two libellous passages, and it is these pages which are present here as pasted-on sheets. In 1926 the law offered little protection from American piracies of books published in London, and to minimize this problem ?Savage had arranged that the American copyright edition of Seven Pillars should be set up and printed by George H. Doran who was publishing the Cape abridgement in New York.? [Wilson, p. 773]. Thus it seems most likely that the two references in the inscription, ?You may find it useful for copyrighting? and ?if you copyright this, good enough? refer to Savage sending this copy to Doran, that the other copy sent to Doran was the heavily amended copy for Revolt.         Ein Anatomischer Totentanz Unter Mitwirkung von Kunstmaler Fritz Stell

Munich: Bergmann, 1926. FIRST EDITION. Fine. 4to. Original beige half-cloth over eggplant-colored boards. 27, (1) pp. With 50 b/w photographic plates, a few of which are photographs of respective paintings by Fritz Stell. Preserved in a fine protective case. A BEAUTIFUL COPY. Very scarce and -- quite frankly -- amazing "memento mori," purported to be in the service of medicine, but we remain unconvinced. There are 50 photographic plates on 25 double-spread pages. Each opposing plate depicts the same subject, i.e. a man or a woman in an artistic pose; on one side we see the nude figure, and on the other their skeletal equivalent in the identical pose. The juxtapositions are similtaneously disquieting and compelling and MUST BE SEEN to be fully appreciated. Albert Hasselwander (1877-1954), was an anatomist and radiologist who published an atlas of X-ray images of the human body during the same year, considered these artfully posed life / death scenes to be a modern anatomical interpretation of the medieval "Dance of Death." We have been looking for a fine copy of this book since 2006. This one is in the freshest possible state.

1926. Ulmann, Doris. Unique oil pigment print photograph, image size 8 x 6 in. [20.3 x 15.2 cm.] mounted to tissue using glassine tape and then tipped to 11 x 14 inch board. SIGNED in pencil beneath the image by the photographer; titled "An Old Woman" and signed again on the blank reverse of the board. Presented in a 16 x 20 inch archival window-mat. In fine condition. Doris Ulmann (1882-1934), although prolific, the majority of her photographs are unique prints and of these, most are left unsigned. As was her practice, Doris Ulmann only signed those photographs she exhibited or intended to exhibit. From 1917 through 1925, Doris Ulmann created approximately 150 oil pigment prints. Given the extreme difficulty in obtaining success with this process, the prints are unique monotypes. The subtle details visible in the deep shadows of this print exhibit a technical mastery of both the exposure and of the pigment process. This print is reproduced as Figure 1, p. xx in Philip Walker Jacobs' excellent THE LIFE AND PHOTOGRAPHY OF DORIS ULMANN. The University of Kentucky Press, 2001. For a detailed description of Ulmann's oil print process and method of presentation, see the above reference, p. 276 -77.

He came to Tokyo where he studied painting under Suzuki Koson and he painted birds and flowers under the guidance of the celebrated American,Ernest Fenollosa, a professor at the Tokyo Imperial Museum. In con- junction with the Daihei print shop, he made bird and flower designs for color prints under the name Kosaon. In 1912, he changed his name to Shoson & only produced paintings until 1926 when he returned to making color-prints,which have been published by Watanabe & sold through their famous shop." Extracted from the 1951 S. Watanabe: CATALOG OF WOOD-CUT COLOR PRINTS BY CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE ARTISTS, p.30; pp30-33 is a list of all Shoson prints, this print is no. 9: "A Group of Geese Near a Pool." This print shows an elaborately embossed feather outline area in grey with blind-stamped areas to make the illusion of feathers realistic, toned with light orange, beaks, legs & feet in orange, yellow & black. Ground grey-green, broken with darker green shadows and shading upward through light yellow-orange to light red-orange. In all six ducks are at play, two very large ducks occupy the foreground, each with shadows. The background is carefully rubbed in a swirling pattern which gives this print a handsome and elegant impression, with the pale pink sky lending itself in to a faint yellow. Expertly printed by hand with the most artistic techniques render this a superb example. Ready for framing and display. BIBLIOGRAPHY: Stephens: THE NEW WAVE, pp 122-125 BLAIR, Dorothy.         The Daisy: Senior Issue. June 1926

East District High School, Brooklyn, New York 1926 - Edited by Daniel Fuchs. Large octavo. 39, [9] ads pp. Stapled and illustrated orange wrappers. Owner's name on front cover, vertical crease, small chip and modest wear on the wrappers, very good. Also includes a page signed by many classmates (but not, it appears, by Fuchs). Fuchs was the author of the classic Jewish-American novel A Summer in Williamsburg set in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Not only did Fuchs edit this high school literary magazine, he is pictured with a brief biography (as well as pictured in the class picture), and here publishes the Second Prize story in the school's Short Story Contest, "Isidore Goldfarb Reflects.", which is very reminiscent of his later fiction. The biography reveals that Fuchs edited and contributed to the magazine for most of his high school tenure, so presumably this is not his first published work. However, we've seen no other copy of the magazine. His first novel, A Summer in Williamsburg, was published in 1934, the same year as the other great Jewish-American Depression classic Call It Sleep by Henry Roth. Fuchs later devoted himself to writing film scripts, one of which, Love Me Or Leave Me, won him an Academy Award. [Attributes: First Edition]

A classification of the tumors of the glioma group

Philadelphia: Lippincott, 1926. Cushing, Harvey (1879-1939) and Percival W. Bailey (1892-1973). A classification of the tumors of the glioma group on a histo-genetic basis with a correlated study of prognosis. [8], 175pp. Text illustrations. Philadelphia, London & Montreal: J. B. Lippincott Co., 1926. 228 x 153 mm. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spine. Fine, bright copy. First Edition. "This monograph is significant in the history of neurology since it represents the first serious attempt to classify gliomatous tumors of the central nervous system on a histological basis correlated with the life history of each type of growth. The analysis offered herein has become the basis of most subsequent classifications of tumors of the glioma group" (Bibliography of the Writings of Harvey Cushing 8). "Through patient study of Cushing's vast material Bailey was able to arrange the different types of glial tumors in an evolutionary tree, indicating their interrelationships and embryological origin. With full clinical records at their disposal, it was possible for the two men to correlate the life history of each tumor with its histological type" (Fulton, Harvey Cushing, p. 522). 4608.

The Satyricon of T. Petronius Arbiter. Burnaby's translation, 1694; with an introduction by C. K. Scott Moncrieff ; ornamented by Martin Travers.

Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co.

[RODCHENKO'S DESIGN FOR MAYAKOVSKY'S TRAVEL NOTES ABOUT AMERICA] Moe otkrytie Ameriki [i.e. My Discovery of America]

Moscow: GIZ, 1926. 142, [2] pp.: ill. 18x10 cm. Original wrappers designed by Alexander Rodchenko. Very good. Minor loss of the spine from the edges. First edition. One of 3000 copies. Scarce! One of the rarer Mayakovsky/Rodchenko books. The book contains the notes from poet's trip to America and Mexico in 1925 that tend to show the countries from tougher side. The pictures from the trips are included in the edition as well. The wrapper designed by long-time Mayakovsky's collaborator Rodchenko can be called the classic of constructivist design. Mayakovsky disliked America long before he saw it. The lines summarizing the trip - «I would close America, lightly cleaned it, and then opened it again - for the second time» - he wrote on the way to America aboard the steamer. But in New York Mayakovsky came to life. The meeting with David Burliuk was very emotional. He liked the city very much, and he fell in love with lonely walks in Manhattan. Finally, he found a new love, Ellie Jones, who was from Volga Germans and gave birth to their daughter. Hellyer 325; The Russian Avant-Garde Book 656.
