L'ouvrage comporte en première partie des textes plus ou moins copieux signés Poulaille, Cingria, Chavannes, Pourrat, Courthion, la seconde section livrant de plus brefs commentaires de Claudel, Cocteau, Delteil, Gilliard, au total 45 participants pour l'ensemble.Nous en avons également un second tout nu, un Vélin pas moche & un alfa propret. Off white acid free matting and Tru Vue UV protectant glass. In extremely good condition, with no fading or acid burn. Crisp, Clean colours. Frame measures 37 X 43 CM (14.5 X 17 inches). Metal wire hanger across back. With Phillips' signature included to the bottom right of the image as well as signed in pencil on just below the right of the image. There is also a pencil notation of the title and edition number below the image to the left. Boulet MBL96. A beautiful woodcut by the famous Canadian artist depicting a young girl in a teal and orange dress. The girl gently rests on the sand watching a small bird in front of her. A peaceful and delicate image. The excellent quality of framing and pristine condition makes this print especially desirable. Walter Joseph Phillips (October 25, 1884 – July 5, 1963) was an English-born Canadian painter and woodcutter, acclaimed as one of Canada's most famous printmakers and for popularizing the colour woodcut in the style of the Japanese. His artistic career spanned from the 1900s through the 1940s, during which time his work was exhibited throughout North America and Great Britain. In 1940 he was asked to become a resident artist at the Banff Centre, then known as the Banff School of Fine Arts, where he played an important role in the development of their visual arts program. Its Walter Phillips Gallery, which focuses on contemporary art, is named after him. The Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta holds an extensive collection of Phillips works and a research archive..

Shepard, this appearing to be one of a small number of the more luxurious deluxe edition produced in soft leather and printed on coated stock. This copy has been rebound in full blue morocco leather with the same gilt depiction on the front cover of Christopher Robin and Pooh that appeared on the original deluxe edition and with gilt depictions of Pooh on the spine, with all edges gilt. Clean copy with a sticker "Jane Austen Prize" pasted to the recto of the first blank.

      1926. [In Two Volumes.] With Eight Plates [in each volume]. London, New York, Toronto and Melbourne: Cassell and Company, n.d. (1926). Original dark blue cloth, with dust jackets. First Edition of Doyle's major work on spiritualism. Ever since his son and his brother had each died of pneumonia during the Great War, Doyle's obsession had been spiritualism, with short tracts such as THE NEW REVELATION and THE VITAL MESSAGE; however, it was in this two-volume compendium that Doyle sought to bring together all of the movement's history. (Doyle acknowledges in his Preface that the majority of the research and even perhaps of the writing was done for him by the psychic authority and book-collector Leslie Curnow; Doyle wanted Curnow to share the credit, but the publisher insisted that only Doyle's name appear on the title page and binding.)~The volumes are unusually bright, in fine condition except that there is very light, occasional foxing on some leaves (as one would expect with this thick wove paper); the rather scarce dust jackets are very good-plus (slight soil and edge-wear, including one small chip at an upper corner and an inch-plus closed tear). Although the number of copies printed is unknown, it was probably relatively few (as the book was priced at 42 shil­lings per set, and as Doyle had had to share in the cost of publication). Just the slightest bit of rubbing to the lower corners of the front board, with a little toning to the leaves; faint unobtrusive stain across the upper edge of the text block; small chip to the upper edge of the rear panel of the dust jacket and a slight chip at the head of the spine, with a small stain to the upper edge of the inside rear panel and to the rear panel; jacket spine just a trifle darkened and worn.

Text block cracked before the half-title page with a small piece lacking from the front free endpaper where it somehow was glued down to the pastedown. Still a Near Fine, bright copy in a near Very Good, unrestored example of the uncommon dustwrapper that has some light green stains on the spine with light chipping at the head. The front panel is neatly separated from the spine . Fitzgerald's first book published after his masterpiece THE GREAT GATSBY which had a print run of 20,870 copies while this book had a run of less than half of that number: 10,100 published. Includes 9 stories, among them "The Rich Boy," which scholar Matthew Bruccoli described as "an extension of THE GREAT GATSBY, enlarging the examination of the effects of wealth on character." The story contains one of Fitzgerald's most famous passages: "Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand. They think, deep in their hearts, that they are better than we are because we had to discover the compensations and refuges of life for ourselves." Bruccoli A 12.I.a

One of 300 copies published (this being No. 172). An early play by Hemingway, extremely scarce, particularly in this condition and including the envelope.       New York: Albert & Charles Boni, 1926. First Edition. cloth. Very Good in a Near Very Good, soiled dustwrapper with a few tears and small chips. Brown cloth. Illustrated with drawings. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper nearly filling the page: "Frank Wilson/Best Wishes/of/Will Rogers/almost an author/Houston June 28, 1928." The title page states "Volume I" but Rogers in his preface reveals that statement to be a joke indicating that many more of these humorous sketches disguised as letters and telegrams to President Coolidge could be compiled. Rogers was born in Indian Territory in 1879 and had some Native American blood in his veins. He began in vaudeville and moved on to motion pictures, a career that was cut short when he died in a small plane crash in 1935 near Point Barrow, Alaska. Perhaps he was best known, however, for his syndicated newspaper column which had such a massive following that the proposition that he run for President was once seriously advanced. His saying, "All I know is what I read in the newspapers," became a popular catchword of the times. Books signed or inscribed by this most popular of American humorists, especially with such a fine inscription, are rather uncommon.

Album comportant 21 ff. portant chacun un bois gravé original signé et un numéro d'inventaire au composteur au verso, 1 f. dactylographié ("Catalogue des oeuvres de A. La Borderie"), toutes les planches sous serpente, l'ensemble cousu sous une couverture de fort papier vert Véronèse portant au premier plat l'ex-libris gravé de l'artiste. Sont jointes séparément : 4 gravures sur bois tirées sur mauvais papier, chacune signée, datée 1928 et légendée "bois original pour La Maison du Maltais de Jean Vignaud". Très curieux album d'un artiste totalement inconnu sur lequel nous n'avons trouvé aucune information (il s'agit peut-être d'un pseudonyme). Dans le catalogue de 23 gravures qu'il fournit (dont 21 sont présentes dans l'album, 2 autres ayant été découpées, probablement par l'artiste), l'artiste nous indique le titre des gravures et, pour certaines, le salon où elles ont été exposées. D'après ces informations, le mystérieux graveur aurait exposé aux salons de la Nationale (Société Nationale des Beaux Arts) de 1926, 1929 et 1930 ainsi qu'au salon des artistes français (Société des artistes français) du Grand Palais de 1931. Les bois sont tirés, en noir ou en sanguine (une sanguine tirant vers le sang-de-boeuf), pour la plupart sur fort vergé grisé, bleu roi, beige ou bleu fumé, certains sont sur papier du Japon. Ils sont tous signés, deux sont également légendés et justifiés ("Rêverie", 2/20 - "En mer", 10/20). Les quatre planches présentées à part font partie de ce qui ressemble à un projet d'illustration non abouti pour le roman "La Maison du Maltais", un grand succès de l'époque qui inspira un premier film en 1927 (et un second en 1938) : il n'existe en effet pas à notre connaissance d'édition illustrée par "La Borderie" de ce texte, pas même en revue. Trois des planches de cette suite (qui ressemble à un essai d'impression) se retrouvent dans l'album, tirées sur un meilleur papier, et auraient été présentées aux salons de 1929 ou de 1931. Trois autres planches de l'album font par ailleurs manifestement partie de cette série. Les gravures sont généralement délicates, certaines sont puissantes, et elles sont de caractère varié : certaines, dans un style art déco, sont subtilement érotiques, d'autres sont clairement exotiques ou d'inspiration mythologique, d'autres son champêtres, l'une enfin, peut-être la plus intéressante, est à thème maritime. Provenance inconnue (l'album figura au catalogue d'une vente Ader de 2008 - 17/10, lot n° 258, invendu semble-t-il). Un album rare, de grande élégance et mystérieux..

John Barrymore (February 15, 1882 ¿ May 29, 1942) was an American broadway, stage, and film actor.       1926. Drypoint. Signed in pencil. 19 in an edition of 150. Image measures 6 x 8". Sheet measures 9.5 x 11". This etching shows a peaceful waterfront scene at dusk. In the foreground, a bird skims along the surface of the water with its wings outstretched, dragging its feet among the fine reeds. Above, another bird glides in the dimming sky, which has been beautifully depicted with gestural lines. The shadowy trees reflected in the water indicate the setting of the sun. This image is from the second state of the print. It is a bright impression in excellent condition with full margins and no chips or tears. Frank W. Benson (1862--1951) was an American Impressionist and Realist artist known best for his work in painting, watercolor, and etching. He got his start as a portrait and mural artist for the Library of Congress and found success as a painter of Academic Realist portraits. Around the turn of the century, his summers in New Hampshire inspired him to take an interest in plein-air Impressionism, with a particular interest in the capture of light and natural surroundings. Yet it is perhaps for his etchings of wildlife for which Benson is most famous, and in particular his etchings of wild fowl, which won him both critical and popular acclaim as well as a place in art history as one of the foremost printmakers of the 20th century. This beautiful image of birds demonstrates what made Benson such a successful and valued artist.

"Rose was instrumental in persuading the Home Office that Douglas should be supplied with writing materials during the poet's incarceration in 1924 for libelling Churchill; whilst imprisoned, Douglas composed the sonnet sequence 'In Excelsis', which he dedicated to Rose, in gratitude for his assistance. However, Douglas later discovered that Rose had abused his trust and stolen manuscripts from him, which had been sold through the booksellers W. & G. Broadside plat map 20 3/4 x 26 1/4 inches folding to 10 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches (pencil and red pencil annotations); plus two promotional pamphlets each folding to 9 x 4 inches. Very good condition. The University of California at Irvine has an extensive collection of the Dana Point Syndicate Records of S.H. Woodruff and provides the following background to this development: "In mid-1926, Los Angeles realtor-builder S.H. (Sidney) Woodruff formed a group of investors as a means to finance the purchase, subdivision, and development of roughly 1,400 acres of coastal property at Dana Point, a town on the Pacific coast in Orange County, California. As the head of this group, known as the Dana Point Syndicate, Woodruff was instrumental in designing the Dana Point development and promoting its coastal amenities through a nationwide publicity campaign. The centerpiece of the development was to be the luxurious cliff-top Dana Point Inn, which was modeled on similar buildings located on the Italian and French Rivieras. Although successful in its early stages, Woodruff's Dana Point development effort failed in 1930, due primarily to the effects of the 1929 stock market crash upon the finances of the investors. Despite setbacks, Woodruff still hoped that his project would come to fruition throughout the 1930s. His alternative financing methods failed, however, and in February 1939, Woodruff, as president of the Dana Point Corporation, received permission to sell off the syndicate's interests. In the end, only thirteen houses were actually constructed by the Dana Point Syndicate, and the hotel itself never went beyond the foundation stage. Prior to his work with the Dana Point Syndicate, Woodruff was best known for his collaboration on the exclusive subdivision known as "Hollywoodland," which gained fame as a result of the large metal sign erected in the Hollywood Hills to publicize its location." These three items document this ambitious, well-connected development which never came to fruition. The "Homes in Dana Point" pamphlet opens up once to show a 3 panel "artist's conception by Charles H. Owens" and then to full sheet size to show red and white photo illustrations "exterior and interior views of a few of the delightful all year round sea-coast homes at Dana Point." Dana Point received its name from Richard Henry Dana, Jr., the author of Two Years Before the Mast (published in 1840), his account of shipping out from Boston as a common seaman on a voyage to California. Dana described the coastal area in the vicinity of present-day Dana Point as "the only romantic spot on the coast." .

Although the spine is sunned and the hinges just starting at the head and foot, it is intact and original, not repaired or lacking as is often the case with this book. Thin line of dampstaining to front cover, else a well-preserved, internally fine copy of this notoriously fragile book, scarce thus. In Mylar wrapper.

      Paris: Au Sans Pareil, 1926.. Thick octavo. Printed green wrappers. Illustrated with two original drypoints, as well as text illustrations, by Jean Lurçat. As usual, the fugitive green wrappers have faded somewhat, but otherwise about fine. First edition. The edition de tête, being one of twenty numbered copies on vélin de cuve, with two extra suites of the drypoints and illustrations, one on Japon, bound in back, each copy designated with the name of one of the friends of the press. The entire edition consisted of 990 copies, plus copies reserved hors commerce. Published in the year of Soupault's breach with the surrealists over politics, CORPS PERDU is not as widely known as the work it is most often compared to, Breton's NADJA, which it anticipated by a year.         Typescripts with Author's Corrections for Two or Three Graces

      103ff. typed carbon sheets comprising the typescripts for the complete contents of Huxley's 1926 collection, Two or Three Graces. In addition to the title novella, the collection contains three shorter stories: "The Monocle," "Fairy Godmother," and "Half-Holiday." This is likely the setting copy for the book, as some of the pencil notations are concerned with matters of font selection and page breaks; also, it has the Little & Ives receipt stamp on the verso of page 4, showing it as being received on 8 December 1925. Huxley composed almost all of his works on the typewriter, and these typescripts show the author's changes in black and red pen, as well as an editor's annotations in pencil for the printer. The title of "Fairy Godmother" was changed by Huxley, and the first page of the story has a slip from the publisher tipped into the margin. Housed in a specially-made, folding cloth chemise and a green morocco-backed slipcase. Some edgewear is present to the thin typing paper, and a marginal tear to page 74 has resulted in slight text loss.

Some light offsetting to the blank endpapers, otherwise a lovely bright copy in publishers green cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gilt Cape logo on rear board. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. In the rare original dustwrapper with wood engraved illustration to front panel and words "Limited edition" on spine. A very near fine book in a very good dustwrapper with small amount of loss to the top and bottom of spine and minor rubbing to edges. Tipped in at the front is a typed letter, signed by Armstrong, to a collector who had written asking about purchasing the author's manuscript for the book. Armstrong writes; "The amount before which my resistance would become extremely difficult to maintain is five hundred dollars". The letter is dated 10 December 1927. Beneath the letter is the bookplate of the collector. The first book to be illustrated by Ravilious, showing that even at the age of 23 he was a master of wood engraving.:

First editions.Erwin Paul Dieseldorff was something of a renaissance man for the Alta Verapaz. Born in Hamburg, he emigrated to Guatemala at the age of twenty to join his uncle and cousin, who had established themselves as merchants and coffee planters some years before. Shortly after his arrival he volunteered to accompany a German cartographer who was mapping out the Verapaz, and while traipsing around its mountains and valleys he acquired an intimate knowledge of the lay of the land. The two Germans also explored caves and excavated Mayan burial sites, which sparked in Dieseldorff a lifelong interest in archaeology and ethnology. In addition to his business ventures (which came to include the largest department store in Coban), Dieseldorff was equally devoted to his intellectual pursuits. His excavations on his own and neighboring fincas yielded a number of polychrome vessels whose hieroglyphics he studied for many years, comparing them to features found in Mayan codices. As his interest in Mayan studies grew, he collected everything he could find that had been published on the subject of Mayan art, culture, and religion, and he journeyed to the major Mayan archaeological sites in Guatemala and Honduras to inspect them first hand. He published numerous papers on archaeology in scholarly journals, culminating in his three-volume Kunst und Religion de Mayavölker (Berlin 1926). In the later 20's and 30's he began analyzing the Mayan and Aztecan calendar systems, working out his own calculations and unorthodox theories, which he published in archaeological journals in Germany, Guatemala, and the United States. He came to be a respected researcher in Mayanist circles and his own extensive collection of Mayan artifacts now resides in the Museo Archaeologico Nacional in Guatemala City.Condition:Corners bumped, spine ends rubbed, lightly soiled else very good copies.

One of the principal centers of the slave trade, Gambia was colonized by a succession of European governments and commercial groups during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Gambia was originally subject to the government of neighboring colony Sierra Leone, which annexed it in 1821. Gambia became a separate colony in 1843.
