        The Old Mulford House (Easthampton)

1926. Etching. Signed in pencil. Image measures 8.25" x 10.75". Sheet measures 11.25" x 15.25". This print provides a lovely view of the Old Mulford House, a colonial farmhouse in Easthampton, basking in the shadow of a tree in the front yard. Hassam has rendered both with a remarkable Impressionist penstroke which appears spontaneous and immediate even in the more enduring medium of etching. By dispersing white spots throughout the shadow, the artist conveys the shadow's flickering impermanence. The print contains the artist's signature and date and is signed again below in pencil. The print is in good condition, with the artist's tack holes at the sheet edges. Childe Hassam (1859-1935) was an American Impressionist painter who lived in New York City. He spent much of his time out on Long Island, where the abundant natural light allowed him to experiment with rendering its reflection in both pen and paint. This beautiful print, an edition of which can be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a fine example of Hassam's impressive work.

London: Etchells & Macdonald, 1926.. Quarto. Cream linen spine and orange cloth over boards, stamped in gilt. Faint dust soiling to spine, trace of normal offsetting to endsheet gutters, otherwise a fine copy in lightly worn slipcase. First edition. Introduction and captions to the illustrations by Bernard Windeler. Illustrated with twenty-three original copper engravings by Wadsworth, printed from the plates, both full-page and vignette, and some delicately handcolored. One of four hundred and fifty copies. Wadsworth was, of course, one of the original signators to the Vorticist manifesto and regrettably that tradition shows through only occasionally and briefly in these draftsman-like renderings. Of particular interest to this cataloguer is the probability that the author of the captions is the same B.C. Windeler whose ELIMUS, with illustrations by Dorothy Shakespear, was published in Pound's INQUEST series three years earlier.

        Photograph of Richard Reti

Photograph card. Duodecimo (5 1/4" x 3 1/4") on heavy card stock. Signed and dated 22-3-1926 on the verso in black ink.Richard Réti was an Austro-Hungarian, later Czechoslovak chess player, chess author, and composer of endgame studies. He was born in Pezinok which at the time was in the Hungarian part of Austria-Hungary, where his father worked as a physician in the service of the Austrian military. Réti came to Vienna to study mathematics at Vienna University. One of the top players in the world during the 1910s and 1920s, he began his career as a combinative classical player, favoring openings such as the King's Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.f4). However, after the end of the First World War, his playing style changed, and he became one of the principal proponents of hypermodernism, along with Aron Nimzowitsch and others. With the exception of Nimzowitsch's book My System, he is considered to be the movement's foremost literary contributor. He had his greatest early successes in the period 1918 through 1921, in tournaments in Kaschau (Ko?ice) (1918), Rotterdam (1919), Amsterdam (1920), Vienna (1920), and Gothenburg (1921). The Réti Opening (1.Nf3) is named after him. Réti defeated the world champion José Raúl Capablanca in the New York 1924 chess tournament using this opening ? Capablanca's first defeat in eight years, his only one to Réti, and his first since becoming World Champion. Réti was also a notable composer of endgame studies. Réti composed one of the most famous chess studies. It was published in Ostrauer Morgenzeitung 4 December 1921. In the problem it seems impossible for the white king to catch the advanced black pawn, while the white pawn can be easily stopped by the black king. The idea of the solution was to move the king to advance on both pawns at the same time using specific properties of the chess geometry. In 1925 Réti set a world record for blindfold chess with 29 games played simultaneously. He won 21, drew six, and lost two. His writings have become classics of chess literature. Modern Ideas in Chess (1923) and Masters of the Chess Board (1933). Réti died on 6 June 1929 in Prague of scarlet fever. His ashes are buried in the grave of Réti's father Dr. Samuel Réti in the Jewish section of Zentralfriedhof cemetery in Vienna, in Section T1, Group 51, Row 5, Grave 34.Signed Reti material is very scarce.Condition:Verso slightly soiled else a very good item.

Tribal Tattooing and Scarification in the Congo: A Physician's Manuscript Field Journal. With Sketch Diagrams.

      - Belgian Congo, 1926-1928. Manuscript journal of an Italian physician who travelled extensively throughout the Belgian Congo for two years, documenting among other traditions, those of tattooing and scarification, which are illustrated with over 40 sketch diagrams drawn on the spot. 8vo. 140 pages. Text is primarily in French, with occasional notes in Italian, and a scant few in Greek, the latter possibly chosen for reasons of security due to content. Brown cloth boards, soiled from heavy field use, otherwise very good condition, internally sound. Together with an assortment of correspondence, newspaper clippings, receipts for medical supplies including caskets, and a coloured sketch plan hand drawn on an envelope by the doctor, the lot loosely inserted. The journal's first entry is 12 March 1926, upon arrival at Boma, suggests that the physician has already been in the Belgian Congo for a period of time. By 10 April he mentions a departure for Stanleyville, now known as Kisangani, in the Orientale Province. Travelling extensively throughout the Belgian Congo for at two full years, March 1926 to March 1928, Bagga was commissioned by the Belgian government for medical work, in particular to focus on the epidemic sleeping sickness. Some of his time is spent in Boma, Kikwit, Lomela, Lusambo and Ouala near Brazzaville. Little known places, isolated even today, are also visited and named, a few of which are Bodja, Okoka, and Bokela. Whether by curiosity, insight, or in the interest in sociological advance, the doctor seized every opportunity to find a willing subject to stand still as he hand sketched the intricately patterned tattoos and flesh scars, taking care to illustrate such details as the means of incising into the torso. Tirelessly the doctor fills the hours of his days, completing tests and examinations to this end, then spending hours acquainting himself with the members various tribes to learn their traditions and sketching their markings, before packing up and travelling yonder. He describes the divorce process among the people of Bahambo clan of Bantu, of the Nande or Banande group, which involves a panel of elders. As well as customs of physical ornamentation in the form of tattooing, scarification, hair braiding and weaving, he learns of traditional rites of passage, beliefs surrounding death and funerals, fertility and war dances. The toils of agriculture and food preparation are also described, including the manual grinding of flour and the gathering of fruit. Always fascinating is the fabrication of implements, especially of a dugout boat carved from a hollowed tree trunk, the Congolese variety evidently originating from the Nigerian Dufuna canoe. His own field-related survival experiences, such as navigating river passages, procuring supplies, and sometimes perilous confrontations, brings liveliness to the account of work and travel in Equatorial Africa. In addition, his daily journeys are chronicled with much detail on the means and conditions of travel, including available light from the sun or moon, and frequent storms in the rain season. Bagga travels mainly by river with the aid of porters, although often they are unreliable, requiring tactics of intimidation to hold them to their commitment. In 1927 detailed plans are being made for a the contruction of a large structure and compound for colonisers. Little is known of Doctor Gabba other than what is in his journal, although other contemporary physicians and missionaries who ventured into the Congo are mentioned within, and research along those veins may yield further information of his work. In Bandundu he met and stayed for three days with Dr. Wolf, who had been in the Congo since 1915. Here he witnesses great numbers of people with malaria, sleeping sickness, bronchitis, pneumonia or ulcers. Other Italian doctors with whom he crossed paths incluve Dr. Avanzini, Dr. Mazzocchi, and Dr. Polledro who established a cassava farm. In Djna he meets doctor Dennare

Hollywood: Metro Goldwyn Mayer, 1926. Superb early & rare 8" x 10" candid still of Garbo and her frequent co-star and some say lover John Gilbert. The still pictures them supposedly listening to a prize fight over the radio and was used as publicity for their just released film "Flesh And The Devil." I've never seen this picture reproduced in any book on Garbo. Caption on verso. Minute chipping to the left white margin along with some small tape mends to the verso of the photograph. The image itself is near fine. . Original Photograph. Paper.

Paris: Contact Editions. 1926. First Edition, Inscribed by the author on the ffe, "H. D. / London / 1926." Also inscribed in another hand, "Marcella Burke 1927 - Unity Degues gave / this to me - it is the copy / H. D. sent her." 8vo; (vi), 338pp; original buff printed wrappers in original glassine, spine chipped at both ends about 1/4", corners bumped, a few closed tears, some chipping and darkening to glassine which has closed tear at lower front hinge about 3", a bit of age-toning to page edges, about very good. Printed by masterprinter, Henri Darantiere in Paris for Robert McAlmon&#39;s Contact Editions in 1926, this was the first of McAlmon&#39;s publications that did not have problems with American censorship. Still, McAlmon later sold 700 copies of the sheets to Houghton, Mifflin that year. The American publisher subsequently brought out a hard-cover edition of the author&#39;s first book of prose at the end of 1926. McAlmon&#39;s publishing venture was funded by his father-in-law, Sir John Ellerman, a wealthy Englishman. His was a marriage of convenience as Winifred Ellerman [Bryher] was living with H.D.& Hilda Doolittle (1886-1961), poet and prose writer, experimented with new lyric, mythic, and mystical forms. This three-part story sequence, PALIMPSEST, is dedicated to Bryher, who was H. D. &#39;s most significant companion in her most mature years. "In her commentary [on Euripides&#39;s ION], modern life is seen as at a turning point, and an Athena-like new world woman is predicted...H. D.&#39;s research into and uses of mythological, astrological and psychological sources of identity for women has made her an important poet for women..." - NAW. Women&#39;s Writing in the United States, pp. 379-381. NAW, Modern Period, pp. 198-201. Ford, Published in Paris, pp. 34-94. <br>See an <A HREF= >Image.</A><br>

        Nigger Heaven

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1926. First Edition. Van Vechten&#39;s enduring and controversial fictional chronicle of the Harlem Renaissance, drawing upon his close friendships with such figures as Wallace Thurman, Langston Hughes, and Nella Larsen. Though the book went into at least a dozen printings in the Twenties, it is notoriously difficult to find any copy retaining the fragile dustwrapper. This example, though imperfect, is among the best we have seen. HANNA 3616. COAN p.192. Octavo (19cm). Brown, ribbed cloth stamped in purple on spine and front cover; dustjacket; 286pp. Deep blue top-stain. Faint, almost imperceptible, spotting to edge of rear board, else a tight, bright copy, very Near Fine, with top-stain slightly faded. Retaining the rare and fragile dustwrapper, minutely chipped at extremities and with a 1" triangular loss at upper front panel (not affecting text); slightly faded on spine as usual, but still perfectly legible; Very Good and most unusual thus.
