. . Albert Ehrenstein: Werke Bd. 3, Boer Verlag). - Schöner Brief über Ehrensteins Arbeit als Herausgeber.

TITINA: THE DOG THAT FLEW OVER THE NORTH POLE

New York: Il Carroccio Publishing Co, 1926. New York: Il Carroccio Publishing Co, 1926. First Edition. Stapled Pamphlet. Very Good binding. The story of the little terrier who was on Amundsen';s expedition over the North Pole. Penned by Antonio Quattrini, the Italian journalist who accompanied the journey, along with Umberto Nobile who was Titina';s master and the engineer and pilot of the dirigible Norge. Titina joined the expedition because she simply could not stand being separated from her master. Sixteen people and one dog -- led by Amundsen and Lincoln Ellsworth -- crossed the North Pole from Norway to Alaska in the Norge. Upon the triumphant return, the crew -- including Titina -- were feted worldwide. At the White House, when meeting Calvin Coolidge, Titina peed on the carpet. Front cover with splashmark, small puncture to inner hinge of front cover. Occasional light spotting. A very good copy. First edition. "It is not extravagant to claim this work and not Keynes's General Theory as the fountainhead of modern macroeconomic dynamics" (Blaug).

Against the Grain (A Rebors) [together with] Down There (La-Bas)

London: The Fortune Press,. London: The Fortune Press,, [1926 and 1930]. 2 works, octavo. Original black buckram, titles to spines gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With the dust jackets. Work 1: rubbing to the corners, mild spotting to endpapers and tanning to the margins of leaves; work 2 only mild tanning to the endpapers. Both excellent copies in mildly rubbed, spine-tanned and soiled jackets. Limited issue Fortune Press editions of Huysman's two major works (originally published in 1884 and 1891 respectively); Against the Grain: first English edition, first printing, one of just 250 numbered copies in the better binding; Down There: one of a numbered 2000 copies on Antique Laid Paper. A Rebors, Huysman's celebrated decadent novel, has long been revered, both in its own right and because it was famously the book which Oscar Wilde made Dorian Gray read as his tutelary manual of aestheticism, describing it as "the strangest book he had ever read". Copies of this limited edition of Against the Grain are very scarce in this state. La Bas introduced Huysman's semi-autobiographical character Durtal who, disgusted with the shallow vulgarity of the modern world, turns to the mediaeval past for solace, and eventually finds (and enters) a thriving underworld of black magic and practising Satanism in fin de siècle France.

Various limitations but all about 1000 copies. The most important English language periodical devoted to typography. Filled with important articles, tipped-in plates and other illustrations. The first four volumes were edited by Oliver Simon and the last three by Stanley Morison. Original dust jackets are present on volumes one, three, and seven (pieces missing from each of the jackets). One of the most notable journals of typography of this century, The Fleuronachieved an internation reputation not only for the quality of its articles but also for the quality of its production. As quoted by Grant Shipcot in Typographical Periodicals Between the Wars, the core of contributors to The Fleuron were also "taking the typographical initiative of the time; this was particularly true of Stanley Morison, who as typographical adviser to the Monotype Corporation and later to Cambridge University Press exerted a very great influence."         Temple Emanu-El

Anton Joseph Friedrich Schutz, New York 1926 - Drypoint and etching on paper. Signed and numbered "#25" in pencil lower right. Signed in the plate lower left and dated 1926. 11.75 x 8.75 inches, plate mark. Etching of the imposing façade of Temple Emanu-El, overlooking the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 43rd Street, which bustles with cars and pedestrians. Designed by Leopold Eidlitz and Henry Fernbach, this building was the largest synagogue building in the United States when it was built in 1868 as the first permanent home for New York's first Reform Jewish congregation. Its distinctive towers are also readily identifiable in a lithograph view of Fifth Avenue from 42nd Street, looking north, based on an 1879 photograph and published in 1904. When Schutz made this etching, in 1926, the congregation had purchased the property at its current location at 1 East 65th Street, and the 1868 building was about to be torn down, which may have motivated him to document it. His print remains as a record of a now-vanished landmark. Another print from the edition is in the collection of the Museum of the City of New York. Anton Joseph Friedrich Schutz (1894-1977), artist and etcher of this print, was an etcher, writer, and editor, born in Germany. He studied at the University of Munich and the Royal Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts. By 1925 he relocated to New York City, where he studied at the Art Students League. He created an extensive series of etchings of New York City scenes during the 1920s and 30s, 24 of which were published in his book New York Etchings (1939). Schutz was a member of the Society of American Etchers and the Chicago Society of Etchers. During his lifetime his works were exhibited and collected by major institutions in the U.S. and abroad, including the Library of Congress, the British Museum in London, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the New York Public Library, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Schutz also contributed etchings to the 14th edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, served as director of the New York Graphic Society, authored Fine Art Reproductions of Old and Modern Masters (1951) and served as publisher and co-editor of 16 volumes in the UNESCO World Art Series, each on the art of a different country (1954-58). The New York Historical Society has 121 etchings of New York City scenes by Anton Schutz as part of the James Boyd Collection of New York City Etchings. Condition: Generally very good overall, recently professionally cleaned and deacidified, with only minor remaining toning and wear. Large margins with slight rippling.

BEAU GESTE (Inscribed Copy with an ALS from the Author re: The Ronald Colman film adaptation)

London: John Murray, 1926. London: John Murray, 1926. Wren, P. C. BEAU GESTE. London: John Murray, 1926. First Deluxe Edition limited to 1000 SIGNED copies of which this is #40, preceded by the extremely uncommon first trade edition which appeared and disappeared in 1924. A FINE and pristine example, having been long-protected by its original VERY GOOD or better dust wrapper (lightly dust-soiled, a few small chips but complete). The silent film version of BEAU GESTE made a star out of Ronald Colman and helped make famous to the viewing public the romantic concept of joining "The French Foreign Legion." Although the Gary Cooper 1939 version is better known, the silent film has always been considered the best of the novel's four cinematic adaptations. Laid into this copy is a two-page handwritten letter from the author (Nicosia, Cyprus, May 15, 1928) to a friend in which Wren pleasurably discusses the Ronald Colman movie ("The film was fine"). Also discussed in the letter is the movie's "talking sequel" BEAU IDEAL as well as BEAU GESTE's upcoming adaptation to the London stage. Housed in an open-end cloth box.. Signed by Author. Edition De Luxe. Fine/Very Good to Fine. Illus. by Helen McKee.
