        The Deluge

London: by Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press,, 1926. and other poems. Octavo. Original marbled paper over boards, paper title label to front board. Extremities rubbed, spine and top edge of boards darkened, starting to head of front joint, occasional spotting to leaves. A good copy. First edition, first impression, one of 400 copies. Inscribed by Trevelyan to his Bloomsbury group friend Irene Cooper Willis on the first blank, "Irene, from Bob, 1926". Willis was a close friend of Trevelyan and received inscribed copies of most of the poet's books. As well as being an author in her own right, she was notably the literary executrix of Thomas Hardy, and also the friend and executrix of Vernon Lee [pseud. of the Florence-based aesthete author Violet Paget: 1856-1935]. Willis had connections to the whole Trevelyan clan: R. C. Trevelyan's younger brother the historian George Macaulay Trevelyan was involved in the founding of the British Institute of Florence, to which Willis bequeathed Vernon Lee's substantial library; and Willis also sat with Trevelyan's older brother Charles Philips Trevelyan on the executive committee of the Union of Democratic Control (the left-wing political group dissenting against British policy during the First World War), of which R. C. Trevelyan was also a member.

        Winnie the Pooh

London: Methuen & Co, 1926. The First Edition Online Bookstore has the very collectable children's illustrated book A.A. Milne Winnie the Pooh first edition book for sale. Written by A.A. Milne and illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard (E.H. Shepard) Winnie the Pooh is the second book in the series of books by A.A. Milne for his son Christopher Robin Milne. A.A. Milne Winnie the Pooh was first published by Methuen in 1926, and this is the Winnie the Pooh first edition and first impression of this classic children's illustrated book of the twentieth century. It should be noted that A.A. Milne Winnie-the-Pooh is the correct title with the hyphens in the character's name being later dropped when The Walt Disney Company adapted the Winnie the Pooh stories into a series of Winnie the Pooh featurettes that became one of the company's most successful franchises worldwide. This is probably one of the most important children's illustrated books of the twentieth century. The original publisher's green boards bear a gilt border to the front board with gilt decoration of Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin; and with gilt lettering to the spine. The boards are in Very Good condition with very light marks to the front and back boards; and very light knocks to the corners and the top and bottom of the spine. The green and gilt coloration is still very bright and vibrant. This is a lovely set of boards for this very collectable A.A. Milne Winnie the Pooh first edition book from 1926. There are 158 numbered pages, all top edge gilt. This classic A.A. Milne Winnie the Pooh first edition book has the double page illustration to the front and rear endpapers featuring the 100 Aker Wood including the compass to the top left corner spelling POOH. Contained on these pages are the now iconic illustrations of Winnie the Pooh and his friends by E.H. Shepard. The endpapers that show the map to the 100 Aker Wood are in Very Good condition and have the characteristic browning to the paper. These are an excellent set of endpapers for this A.A. Milne Winnie the Pooh first edition book. There are 158 numbered pages, all top edge gilt and in Very Good condition with stunning and now iconic illustrations of Winnie the Pooh and his friends by E.H. Shepard. All pages are very clean and tightly bound-in with only very slight and occasional foxing that is mainly confined to the margins. Internally this A.A. Milne Winnie the Pooh first edition book is very attractive. This is a lovely A.A. Milne Winnie the Pooh first edition book, with stunning illustrations by E.H. Shepard throughout and probably one of the most important children's illustrated books of the twentieth century that will make a wonderful addition to any A.A. Milne Winnie the Pooh book collection or any collection of children's illustrated books.. First Edition. Original Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by E.H. Shepard.

KRITISK REVY. Red. af Poul Henningsen.

1.-3. årg. i 11 hefter. (Det udkomne). Kbhvn. 1926-28. Rigt illustr. 4to. Indbundet i ét privat halvlæderbind. Bindet signeret Harry Larsen.

The British Gazette, full set of 8 issues

London: His Majesty's Stationary Office (from The Daily Telegraph building), 1926. 1st Edition. Paperback. Very good. The British Gazette ran for eight issues between 5 May and 13 May 1926 (excluding Sunday 9 May). It was championed and edited by Churchill during the General Strike of 1926. The British General Strike of 1926 began on May 4 of that year and presented a major national crisis. By some estimates, 1.5 to 1.75 million workers were involved. On May 5, the British government struck back using its resident master wordsmith and orator, Winston Churchill, who was then serving in the cabinet as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Churchill was put in charge of a major propaganda effort. Under his editorship, the government made its case through a short-lived but highly effective newspaper series called The British Gazette. According to Churchill Bibliographer Ronald Cohen, "Although Churchill did not actually write an article in every one of the eight issues, he played a major role in the mounting of the enterprise, the solicitation of personnel to publish the newspaper and paper on which to print it, as well as the editorial guidance of its content. The articles he wrote are all unsigned." The influence of the publication was clearly significant, circulation well exceeding 2 million by the final issue. The short publication run ended when the strike was abandoned. Offered here is a complete set of the original eight issues. Each issue was a broadsheet newspaper, each of 4 pages, the first two issues printed on one side of the sheet only. Each issue measures 23.25 inches x 17.75 inches. All eight issues show the usual creases from being previously folded in four, as well as some age toning and trivial marginal tears. However, condition is better than we usually see and very good overall given the age and fragility of the issues. All issues are well protected and stored flat within a purpose-made, oversized cloth portfolio with ribbon ties, tri-fold flaps to protect the issues within, and a gilt stamped morocco leather label on the front cover. The portfolio measures 24.5 inches by 19.25 inches. Given the large portfolio dimensions, additional shipping charges will likely be required.         LETTER (TLS, signed) with COLOR (signed)

New York: October 30, 1926. original typed letter, signed, on OPPORTUNITY: JOURNAL OF NEGRO LIFE letterhead. The 100+ word letter is addressed to "My dear Miss Deane" and addresses her troubles with living in the south, and Cullen expresses his feelings toward his poetry contained in the volume COLOR (Harper & Brothers, 1925). The letter reads, in part: "I am sorry that you are beginning to feel the oppressive influence of the south already. Although I have never been there any length of time, I have gathered innumerable evidences of its devestating spirit. I hope you will not be caught in its coils . . ." Cullen goes on, in part: "Thank you for your kind comment on COLOR; I wish I could get the whole south to read it. I never write my poems for the express purpose of pointing a moral, but I believe . . . biased southerners would profit by reading them . . ." A wonderful and expressive, heartfelt letter that provides a vision of the black struggles in the south, and the spirit of Cullen's poetry to express it. Along with the letter is a signed copy of Cullen's book, COLOR. The letter has one correction in Cullen's hand, shows original fold creases for mailing, and minor edge wear, else fine. The book also shows minor edge wear, else fine. A remarkable and unique offering.

        2 typed letters signed ("Kandinsky").

Dessau, 15. V. and 13. X. 1926. - 4to and 8vo. Altogether 4 pp. on 2 ff. To John Schikowski (1867-1934), editor of the magazine "Vorwärts" in Berlin, about hostility against abstract art: "Various opponents who remained silent for several years have become courageous again by various processes and are happy about the almost universal reaction that overwhelmed the arts. But mostly they are happy because they can write again about the arts in their ancient, superficial tone [.] The attitude that the abstract art has only an artistic and commercial value and can only produce pure ornamentation has become the usual point of view. The latter, for example, was claimed by Carl Einstein in the 'Propylaea Art History' where he discussed my work [.]" (15. V. 1926; transl. from the German original). - In his letter from October 10, 1926, Kandinsky discusses Schikowski's book on modern dance in detail. - John Schikowski was considered one of the best critics of modern art and modern dance at that time.

Folio (45,5 x 32,5 cm). 2 typographische Bll. (Titel & Tafelverzeichnis) and 20 photolithographische Tafeln mit hervorragendem Pochoirkolorit. Ansonsten in hervorragendem Zustand. Erste Ausgabe. Sehr selten. - Nissen, ZBI 3796. In comparison with their (i.e. Séguy’s works) variety and brilliance, much Art Deco illustration seems pallid and constrained.” (Ray, The Art Deco Book in France). - ENGLISH: Large-folio (45,5 x 32,5 cm). 2 typographic leaves (title & plate index) and 20 photolithographic plates with pochoir-colouring. Loose sheets as issued in original portfolio with ties, and with illustrated title lable mounted on front board. Titlepage shows even browning and minor fraying to outermost right margin. Else in fine to mint condition. First edition. Very rare. – Nissen: Die Zoologische Buchillustration. No. 3796. – A fine complete copy with all 20 plates – the index calling only for 16 plates, not stating the ornamental designs on the last four plates. Amazing large scale compositions of insects in bright colours, devoted to all generas of insects except for butterflies, on which Séguy had published a separate work. The plates are as decorative as scientifically exact, and display cicadas (pl. 1-2), longhorn beetles (3-4), wasps & bees (5-6), locusts, grasshoppers, orthoptera (7-8), dragonflies & damselflies (9-10), beetles (11-15), plant-hoppers (16) and their application to ornamental patterns (17-20). Until today very little is known about the artist, although he had published a few more works on decorative arts. Probably for the wide appreciation of this work on insects he is very often mixed up with the entomologist Eugène Séguy (1890-1985), who never published on arts at all. Nevertheless, all of Séguy’s works gained an enormous influence on the transition of the Art Nouveau to Art Deco and are today considered masterpieces of decorative arts: “In comparison with their (i.e. Séguy’s works) variety and brilliance, much Art Deco illustration seems pallid and constrained.” (Ray, The Art Deco Book in France).
