        The Torrents of Spring

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926 First edition, first printing of the author's first novel. A near fine copy, with slight wear to the spine head and tail, minor rubbing to the corners, minor smudging to the half-title page, otherwise clean pages, in a first issue unclipped dust jacket, with nine titles to the real panel, slight rubbing to the hinges, some toning to the spine, light staining to the edges of the rear panel and flap, minor chipping to the corners, some loss to the top edge of the front panel, small losses to the spine head and tail and top edge of the rear panel, some tape reinforcement and a few small repairs to the jacket verso at the spine, else good. The Torrents of Spring is Hemingway's first novel and first book published by Charles Scribner's Sons. In this satirical novel written in only ten days, Hemingway parodies Sherwood Anderson's 1925 Dark Laughter and critiques the larger literary trends of his contemporary popular writers, or the "great race." The Torrents of Spring was first rejected by Boni and Liveright, the same publishing house that produced Anderson's Dark Laughter, before being printed in a run of 1,250 by the more commercially successful Charles Scribner's Sons. While his critique of Anderson, who had mentored the young writer and helped him get signed with Boni and Liveright, was correctly seen as disrespectful, Hemingway's The Torrents of Spring helped bring him the publicity and new writing opportunities he desired; the author would subsequently publish shorter pieces for Scribner's Magazine and became professionally affiliated with F. Scott Fitzgerald, whom he had met in Paris and had influenced Hemingway's decision to switch publishers.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

L'ITALIANO.

- 2 (28 gen.) - 3 (11 feb,) - 8 (3 giu.) - 12/13 (7 ott.) - 14/15 (15 nov.) // "Mancano": nn. 4- 5- 6 -7 - 9 - 10 - 11 - 16/17. - 1927 (Anno II): n. 1/2 (15 febbr.) - 3/4 (21 mar.) - 7/8/9 (30 giu.) - 10/11 (31 lugl.) - 12/13 (30 sett.) - 14/15 (8 nov.) - 16/17 con il Lunario (ultimo num. 20 dic.) // "Manca" n. 5/6. - 1928 (Anno III): n. 1/2 (15 febbr.) - 3/4/5 (15 apr.) - 6/7 (28 magg.) - 8/9 (28 giu.) - 10/11 (24 lugl.) - 12/13 (15 ott.) - 14/15 (30 nov.) - 16/17 (31 dic.). Completo. - 1929 (Anno IV): n. 1 (31 genn.) - 2/3/4 (19 mar.) - 5/6 (17 apr.) - 7/8 (12 magg.) - 9/10 (20 giu.) - 11/12 (1 sett.) - 13/14 (30 sett.) - 15/16 (30 ott.) - 17/18 (ultimo num. 15 dic.). Completo. Complessivam. esempl. ben conservato. .

        The Old Mulford House (Easthampton)

1926. Etching. Signed in pencil. Image measures 8.25" x 10.75". Sheet measures 11.25" x 15.25". This print provides a lovely view of the Old Mulford House, a colonial farmhouse in Easthampton, basking in the shadow of a tree in the front yard. Hassam has rendered both with a remarkable Impressionist penstroke which appears spontaneous and immediate even in the more enduring medium of etching. By dispersing white spots throughout the shadow, the artist conveys the shadow's flickering impermanence. The print contains the artist's signature and date and is signed again below in pencil. The print is in good condition, with the artist's tack holes at the sheet edges. Childe Hassam (1859-1935) was an American Impressionist painter who lived in New York City. He spent much of his time out on Long Island, where the abundant natural light allowed him to experiment with rendering its reflection in both pen and paint. This beautiful print, an edition of which can be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a fine example of Hassam's impressive work.

London: Etchells & Macdonald, 1926.. Quarto. Cream linen spine and orange cloth over boards, stamped in gilt. Faint dust soiling to spine, trace of normal offsetting to endsheet gutters, otherwise a fine copy in lightly worn slipcase. First edition. Introduction and captions to the illustrations by Bernard Windeler. Illustrated with twenty-three original copper engravings by Wadsworth, printed from the plates, both full-page and vignette, and some delicately handcolored. One of four hundred and fifty copies. Wadsworth was, of course, one of the original signators to the Vorticist manifesto and regrettably that tradition shows through only occasionally and briefly in these draftsman-like renderings. Of particular interest to this cataloguer is the probability that the author of the captions is the same B.C. Windeler whose ELIMUS, with illustrations by Dorothy Shakespear, was published in Pound's INQUEST series three years earlier.

        Photograph of Richard Reti

Photograph card. Duodecimo (5 1/4" x 3 1/4") on heavy card stock. Signed and dated 22-3-1926 on the verso in black ink.Richard Réti was an Austro-Hungarian, later Czechoslovak chess player, chess author, and composer of endgame studies. He was born in Pezinok which at the time was in the Hungarian part of Austria-Hungary, where his father worked as a physician in the service of the Austrian military. Réti came to Vienna to study mathematics at Vienna University. One of the top players in the world during the 1910s and 1920s, he began his career as a combinative classical player, favoring openings such as the King's Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.f4). However, after the end of the First World War, his playing style changed, and he became one of the principal proponents of hypermodernism, along with Aron Nimzowitsch and others. With the exception of Nimzowitsch's book My System, he is considered to be the movement's foremost literary contributor. He had his greatest early successes in the period 1918 through 1921, in tournaments in Kaschau (Ko?ice) (1918), Rotterdam (1919), Amsterdam (1920), Vienna (1920), and Gothenburg (1921). The Réti Opening (1.Nf3) is named after him. Réti defeated the world champion José Raúl Capablanca in the New York 1924 chess tournament using this opening ? Capablanca's first defeat in eight years, his only one to Réti, and his first since becoming World Champion. Réti was also a notable composer of endgame studies. Réti composed one of the most famous chess studies. It was published in Ostrauer Morgenzeitung 4 December 1921. In the problem it seems impossible for the white king to catch the advanced black pawn, while the white pawn can be easily stopped by the black king. The idea of the solution was to move the king to advance on both pawns at the same time using specific properties of the chess geometry. In 1925 Réti set a world record for blindfold chess with 29 games played simultaneously. He won 21, drew six, and lost two. His writings have become classics of chess literature. Modern Ideas in Chess (1923) and Masters of the Chess Board (1933). Réti died on 6 June 1929 in Prague of scarlet fever. His ashes are buried in the grave of Réti's father Dr. Samuel Réti in the Jewish section of Zentralfriedhof cemetery in Vienna, in Section T1, Group 51, Row 5, Grave 34.Signed Reti material is very scarce.Condition:Verso slightly soiled else a very good item.

Tribal Tattooing and Scarification in the Congo: A Physician's Manuscript Field Journal. With Sketch Diagrams.

      - Belgian Congo, 1926-1928. Manuscript journal of an Italian physician who travelled extensively throughout the Belgian Congo for two years, documenting among other traditions, those of tattooing and scarification, which are illustrated with over 40 sketch diagrams drawn on the spot. 8vo. 140 pages. Text is primarily in French, with occasional notes in Italian, and a scant few in Greek, the latter possibly chosen for reasons of security due to content. Brown cloth boards, soiled from heavy field use, otherwise very good condition, internally sound. Together with an assortment of correspondence, newspaper clippings, receipts for medical supplies including caskets, and a coloured sketch plan hand drawn on an envelope by the doctor, the lot loosely inserted. The journal's first entry is 12 March 1926, upon arrival at Boma, suggests that the physician has already been in the Belgian Congo for a period of time. By 10 April he mentions a departure for Stanleyville, now known as Kisangani, in the Orientale Province. Travelling extensively throughout the Belgian Congo for at two full years, March 1926 to March 1928, Bagga was commissioned by the Belgian government for medical work, in particular to focus on the epidemic sleeping sickness. Some of his time is spent in Boma, Kikwit, Lomela, Lusambo and Ouala near Brazzaville. Little known places, isolated even today, are also visited and named, a few of which are Bodja, Okoka, and Bokela. Whether by curiosity, insight, or in the interest in sociological advance, the doctor seized every opportunity to find a willing subject to stand still as he hand sketched the intricately patterned tattoos and flesh scars, taking care to illustrate such details as the means of incising into the torso. Tirelessly the doctor fills the hours of his days, completing tests and examinations to this end, then spending hours acquainting himself with the members various tribes to learn their traditions and sketching their markings, before packing up and travelling yonder. He describes the divorce process among the people of Bahambo clan of Bantu, of the Nande or Banande group, which involves a panel of elders. As well as customs of physical ornamentation in the form of tattooing, scarification, hair braiding and weaving, he learns of traditional rites of passage, beliefs surrounding death and funerals, fertility and war dances. The toils of agriculture and food preparation are also described, including the manual grinding of flour and the gathering of fruit. Always fascinating is the fabrication of implements, especially of a dugout boat carved from a hollowed tree trunk, the Congolese variety evidently originating from the Nigerian Dufuna canoe. His own field-related survival experiences, such as navigating river passages, procuring supplies, and sometimes perilous confrontations, brings liveliness to the account of work and travel in Equatorial Africa. In addition, his daily journeys are chronicled with much detail on the means and conditions of travel, including available light from the sun or moon, and frequent storms in the rain season. Bagga travels mainly by river with the aid of porters, although often they are unreliable, requiring tactics of intimidation to hold them to their commitment. In 1927 detailed plans are being made for a the contruction of a large structure and compound for colonisers. Little is known of Doctor Gabba other than what is in his journal, although other contemporary physicians and missionaries who ventured into the Congo are mentioned within, and research along those veins may yield further information of his work. In Bandundu he met and stayed for three days with Dr. Wolf, who had been in the Congo since 1915. Here he witnesses great numbers of people with malaria, sleeping sickness, bronchitis, pneumonia or ulcers. Other Italian doctors with whom he crossed paths incluve Dr. Avanzini, Dr. Mazzocchi, and Dr. Polledro who established a cassava farm. In Djna he meets doctor Dennare
