3 Autograph letters to Francis Bickley on four Pages (September 1925?- April 1926)

      - Each letter written to Francis Lawrence Bickley, author of The Adventures of Harlequin which was one of early fine books he illustrated. Each written on his letterhead John Austen. The September letter is not dated by year but from internal evidence points to 1925 when his "Rogues in Porcelain" was issued by Chapman and Hall. Austen writes that he is glad he thinks well of the "Rogues" and I look forward to your criticism of it. [In a case of apparent censorship, he writes:] "A[rthur]. Waugh, publisher of Chapman and Hall, is [desolatest?] because forsooth I have included "The Dove" its evidently the first line he had read it, as he knew well that I was to use it and now he says its indecent and will probably stop sales. I suggest it only increases them. I will certainly tell him to include the Bookman in his list but probably has already done so." He goes on to note: "I enclose the proof of your story which I enjoyed muchly--wish I could decorate a volume of such. Certainly, I will do something with them and will post the drawings when complete, we may be lucky with them." If you have seen Harry Clarke since his visit here, you will have a graphic description of our little estate. Letter of Feb 14th (1928), he notes he is at work on illustrations for Byron's Don Juan for John Lane and also something for Geoffrey Bles, suggests a project for which he proposes to do decorations (though there will not be money in it), mentions his new Rolls Royce and offers to give Bickley a tour if he can trust Austen's "wild driving" In the letter of April 20 invited him to enjoy the country life which he and his wife already have come to love. John Austen is known in the U.S. for his many illustrations for George Macy's Limited Editions Club though his English illustrated books are far more scarce.

Group of manuals for the Trans-Jordan Frontier Force

Zerqa: TJFF, c1931-3. Zerqa: TJFF,, c1931-3. 4 volumes, small octavo. 3 in original wraps with Arabic titles and TJFF crest to upper panels, one contemporary cloth with the wraps bound in. Full details given in the note below. A little shabby, service-worn, but overall sound. First editions, fragile and produced entirely for use in unforgiving climatic conditions, and consequently extremely uncommon survivals. "The TJFF was formed in 1926 and disbanded in February 1948. Unlike the Arab Legion, it was a British Crown force, it was funded from British sources, and its role was deal with banditry, insurgence, arms smuggling, and illegal infiltration in both Jordan and Palestine. In practical terms, much of its effort was directed at trying to keep the peace between the Arabs and the Jews along the length of the Jordan Valley" (Perkins p226). The great majority of other ranks comprised of fellahin, Arab peasants from Palestinian villages. In general better educated, Jews and town Arabs served in technical and administrative post, and by 1935 just under 25% of the Force were drawn from the Circassian minority. The senior commanders were all British, but junior officers were drawn from all the ethnic groups represented in the force. The manuals offered here are as follow: Cavalry Training Manual No. I, Volume I. in the original printed manilla wraps, c.200pp text in Arabic, 20 half-tone plates from photographs, numerous full-page diagrams, 2 folding tables, titled translated into English on the upper wrap, and the date 1931 added; Infantry Training Manual Volume I. Original red cloth-textured wraps, lettered in black on the upper panel, c.160pp Arabic text, 27 half-tone plates, diagrams to the text, with neat pencil translations into English throughout, date of 11/10/33 inked to the upper wrap; Small Arms Training Manual Volume I. Contemporary coarse-grained red cloth, original red cloth-textured card wraps bound in, c.160pp, 25 half-tone plates from photographs, several sketches & diagrams, a scatter of pencilled translations to the text, dated 11/10/33 on the upper wrap; Cleaning & Maintenance of Rifle. Wire-stitched in the original red cloth-textured card wraps, c.40pp., 16 plates, quantity of neatly pencilled translations to the text. Fascinating resource for this short-lived and unusual unit, operating in what remains one of the major trouble-spots of the world.
