Tess of the D'Urbervilles [with the inscribed visiting cards of Thomas and Florence Hardy laid in]

London: Macmillan and Co. Ltd, 1926 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). First Thus. [frontispiece] xiv, pp 1-508. [folding Wessex map to rear] A presentation copy of the limited edition of Hardy's tragic novel, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, inscribed by his second wife, Florence Hardy with the couple's visiting cards laid in. The books is bound in the original blue buckram over bevel-edges boards with top edge gilt and gilt spine lettering. The spine is faded. Florence Hardy has written on the first blank to an unknown recipient: 'With every good wish from Mr & Mrs Thomas Hardy. November 1927'. Laid in are the visiting cards for both Thomas Hardy and his wife. The author's card conforms to the usual late Victorian pattern and dimensions of 3x1.5 inches with Hardy's London Club, The Athenaeum, and Max Gate addresses printed in the lower corners and written above his name: 'Good wishes, from' in a contemporary hand that seems likely to be that of Hardy's first wife, Emma Hardy, but is certainly not Florence Hardy's hand nor, apparently, the author's own. Florence Hardy's visiting hand accompanies that of her husband and, interestingly, is about twice the size of his card with her Max Gate address only and, written in her hand, 'With good wishes' below her printed married name. The 'h' of 'wishes' displays her characteristic trailing approach to the letter that is also displayed in the book's inscription. This little collection of cards and inscribed book, no doubt put together by a near contemporary of Hardy, is a testament to the celebrity status that Hardy possessed as an author during his last two decades.         Turandot: Dramma Lirico in Tre Atti e Cinque Quadri...di G. Adami e R. Simoni; [with] Manuscript Musical Autograph Sheet From Turandot

Milan: G. Ricordi & Co., 1926. 4to, (14), 398 pp. Quarter beige cloth, printed paper over boards. Some wear at extremities of fragile boards. Decorative endpapers. Front hinge cracked. The manuscript autograph sheet is a single folio leaf measuring 12 x 13-inches. Music notation penciled on both sides. A few short and scattered tears not affecting the text. Both housed in recent and matching quarter morocco clamshell boxes. First Italian edition. An important pair of items from PucciniÕs final opera. Giacomo Puccini died 29 November 1924 from complications associated with cancer surgery, roughly one year after his diagnosis; yet Turandot was incomplete and finished later, with considerable dispute over the quality of his work, by Franco Alfano as commissioned by Toscanini. The present manuscript autograph leaf contains nine bars of boldly written notational shorthand, three of which Puccini has crossed out for unknown reasons, especially notable because Ã’it is not generally realized that Puccini was an inveterate reviser, constantly changing and improving his work right up until the time of his death..Ó (Hopkinson, introduction). The librettists Guiseppe Adami and Renato Simoni Ã’based their libretto on Carlo GozziÕs 4th dramatic Fable, Turandotte...[and] Puccini had become familiar with this work through Andrea MalfeiÕs Italian translation of Friedrich SchillerÕs German adaptation of the originalÓ (Fairtile in Giacomo Puccini: A Guide to Research).

Two autograph letters signed, with manuscript juvenilia,

Frognal, London: , 1926. [together with] The Beanstalk [published in] London [by] University College School [in] March, 1926, [and] The Path to Caister and other poems by Violet Spender [published in] London [by] Sidgwick & Jackson, Ltd. [in] 1922. Two separate A.L.S.s on 6 folded leaves; one octavo-sized single quire with white card wrappers printed in black, stapled at the fold; and an octavo book, original blue cloth, titles gilt to spine and upper board. General light toning and occasional spotting to the leaves of all the works, with light rubbing to the corners of the Path to Caister, and some weakness to the spine of the Beanstalk. The whole set in very good condition. An extremely uncommon example of early Spender juvenilia, giving an insight into his troubled youth. These two letters (which contain no less than 5 full original unpublished poems, along with commentary and numerous other snippets and references to his own nascent poetic preferences) were written when Spender was 16. The recipient of these outpourings of youthful creativity was Sylvia Crum, his "nanny" who also happened to be his father's mistress. After the death of his invalid poet mother in 1922 (on Christmas Day), Spender, who did not get on with his "Victorian" father, found a surrogate focus for his filial affections (and palpable need of encouragement) in his father's mistress, and these letters evince a close bond. The first letter, which was sent with a copy (latterly signed by Spender) of the termly school creative writing pamphlet "The Beanstalk" containing what is certainly a very early (perhaps the first) appearance of Spender's poetry in print, contains details of Spender's visit to Oxford, with the endearingly precocious statement that "[I] have a great longing to go there; so great, that I am reading Gibbon; and L'Ile des Pingouins in the French and translating the Germania of Tacitus." It also includes a poetic composition entitled "I MUST not write about the spring", which of course goes on to fail in this respect. The second letter, much longer and more literarily involved than the first, reveals in the young Spender a particularly intense brew of that teenage mixture of self-recriminating doubt and proud aspiration. In it he copies out and comments upon a series of his sonnets, with his judgements ranging from, "That is the VIth, which I can look upon with true contempt. VIII is almost as bad", to "IX is serious and contains the gorgeous phrase, '...and clouds / that frown upon their slaving lord the wind'. Isn't that lovely? It is the first of three sonnets on the futility of my existence, produced by failing in Latin in Smalls + On Reading His Past Sonnets. But they are really very serious." Along with a sonnet entitled, "O I shall write great poems and books one day!", his worshipful references to Rupert Brooke, and the closing remark apologising for his "being elated, but I have been mildly depressed for some weeks, and on Tuesday I am going a ten-days walking tour with Cornforth on Exmoor!", this letter provides a rare insight into the chiaroscuro inner life of a passionate and sensitive boy working his way out of a gloomy childhood and towards a bright[er] future. Some pathos is added to this prospect by the fact that Sylvia Crum would later commit suicide over the impossibility, not to mention the moral agony, of her relationship with Spender's father. The final part of the set, The Path to Caister, is the copy of the posthumously published poems of Spender's mother (as her bereft husband Harold puts it, "it has been a sacred task to collect these scattered leaves") that Sylvia Crum inscribed to her own mother. It has also been latterly inscribed "by the mother of Stephen Spender" on the half-title by Spender himself, and contains a letter from Crum to her mother marking this out as a birthday gift, with a poem apologising for her absence. An unique set of documents that give a rare insight into the difficult childhood of a major 20th century poet, and include several hitherto unseen poems that give a key to the origins of his style and sensibility.

CRAWFORD BY RUTH HARRIET LOUISE (1926)

MGM 1926 - Vintage original 10 x 13" (25 x 33 cm.) black-and-white double weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, USA. One of the earliest and most elegant of all Joan Crawford portraits ever photographed -- and Joan loved working in the portrait photographers' studio! She, along with Greta Garbo, adored working with the great portrait artist, Ruth Harriet Louise -- and Louise took some of the most unusual images of Crawford. Louise worked at MGM between 1925 and 1930. Here Crawford is wearing a spectacular beaded and sequined fur wrap and beaded gown. Though not credited, it is likely that this was designed by Erte who worked at MGM in 1925 and 1926 and designed the costumes for Crawford's first featured role in SALLY, IRENE AND MARY and her 1926 film PARIS, for which this is likely a portrait. This still features the Ruth Harriet Louise blind stamp at the lower right corner, her MGM ink stamp on the verso as well as the Joan Crawford Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer ink stamp. The epitome of early Art Deco glamour. FINE.

Basne na pohlednice. (Gedichte für Ansichtskarten.) 137. Band der Edition Aventinum.

Praha, Otakar-Storch-Marien, 1926.. - "Otakar Mrkvicka (1898 - 1957) studied in Prag and Munich and in the early 1920s he made magazine and book covers, advocating the principles of constructivism in collaboration with Karel Teige, using photomontage in a very early stage. ... He was co-founder of the leftist satirical journal 'Trn' and his illustrations for that journal show the influence of George Grosz, whose drawings were prominent in the first yer (1924) of 'Trn'." (John Vloemans, Avantgarda) - Umschlag berieben, etwas angestaubt, wenig angebräunt bzw. etwas lichtrandig, etwas bestoßen, die den Schnitt überragenden Ränder mit kleinen Läsuren. Seitenränder papierbedingt nur leicht angebräunt. Ansonsten ordentliches Exemplar. - Die Vorzugsausgabe (die ersten 50 von Nezval signierten Exemplare) ist selten.

Ephraim Deinard, New Orleans, Louisiana 1926 - In Hebrew. 4. 184 pages. Original wrappers bound in later boards. Additional scans available. OCLC: Number of libraries worldwide that own this item: 8. Deinard (1846-1930) was "born in Sasmakken, Latvia. Deinard wandered in his youth, collecting ancient manuscripts and books in many countries, and then established a bookshop in Odessa. In 1897 he tried unsuccessfully to found an agricultural settlement in Nevada (U. S. ) . An active Zionist, he settled in Palestine in 1913 where he investigated the possibilities of Jewish settlement. After being expelled by the Turks in 1916 he returned to the United States and continued his bibliographical work. His two most noteworthy bibliographical works are Or Mayer: Catalogue of the Old Hebrew Manuscripts and Printed Books of the Library of the Hon. Mayer Sulzberger of Philadelphia (1896) and Koheleth America (1926) , a listing of Hebrew books published in America from 1735 to 1926. The first part of the latter work contains essays on the state of Hebrew literature in America, which are written in his unadorned, but typically acerbic, style. He laid the foundations of the Hebrew book and manuscript collections of the Library of Congress with the financial aid of Jacob Schiff. A violent polemicist on many controversial subjects, he attacked Reform Judaism, Hasidism, Christianity, and Karaism. Deinard was a prolific Hebrew writer, producing more than 50 books and pamphlets often signed with his pseudonym, Adir. These included Toledot Even Reshef (1879; a biography of Abraham Firkovich, whom he knew in the Crimea) ; Sefer Massa Krim (1878; on travels in Crimea) ; Massale-Erez Kedem (1883; travels in Palestine and Egypt) ; Sefer Miflagot be-Yisrael (1899; on the Subbotniki and Hasidim) ; Zikhronot Bat Ammi (1920; a history of Russian Jewry over the previous 70 years) . He also published several short-lived Hebrew and Yiddish journals, among them Ha-Le'ummi, one of the earliest Hebrew periodicals in America. " (Kressel in EJ, 2007) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

THE OLD SERGEANT'S STORY, WINNING THE WEST FROM THE INDIANS AND BAD MEN IN 1870-1876

Frederick H. Hitchcock, 1926., 1926. First edition. Cloth, 220pp., 8 plates. The author was a recognized Medal of Honor recipient; a participant in many campaigns against Comanche and Kiowa hostiles with Col. Ranald Mackenzie's 4th Cavalry. In 1919 & 1920, he published several pamphlets, now rare, about his Indian-fighting experiences on the southern plains. John B. Charlton, the "Old Sergeant", a comrade of Carter's throughout their years with the 4th Cavalry, read Carter's stories and wrote to Carter in 1921. This began a year and a half of frequent, lengthy correspondence between Carter and Charlton, that ended with Charlton's death in March, 1922. Through the detailed, warm correspondence between the two, Carter presents an insightful, first-hand account of the legendary campaigns of Mackenzie's 4th Cavalry from 1871 through 1874. "Mackenzie's Raid" into Mexico; the capture of outlaw "Red" McLaughlin by Charlton and, famous scout, Jack Stillwell; and the 4th Cavalry battles against the Comanches and Kiowas at McClellan's Creek, Palo Duro Canyon, and the north fork of the Red River are among the many incidents recorded. Of special interest is Charlton's account of the killing of Setank, by Charlton, when Setank, Big Tree, and Satanta were being transported to Ft. Richardson, Texas to stand trial for the killing of 7 teamsters of the Warren Wagon Train when they were attacked by Indians east of Ft. Richardson. In addition, Charlton tells Carter about his experience in Colorado, as an independent freight hauler, when, under escort of Major Thornburgh, they were attacked by Ute Indians and kept under siege for 6 days before being rescued. Charlton was hauling freight to the White River Agency in 1879, when the Utes killed Agent Meeker, captured Meeker's wife and daughter, and wreaked havoc throughout the region. Great history, and a warm and occasionally touching reflection y two "old soldiers". Indian wars historian, John M. Carroll wrote that "Carter's enormously important writings on frontier military history will be recognized as source material for all future historians." An important, first-hand record. Previous owners bookplate on front pastedown, else a fine, bright copy in protective slipcase.
