        WINNIE-THE-POOH

Methuen & Co. Ltd. 1926 - 1st 1926. Nearly fine condition in a nearly fine dustwrapper. Dark green cloth, gilt titles to spine, gilt border and vignette to front cover. Pictorial endpapers. Top edge gilt. Absolutely delightful b/w illustrations of Pooh Bear and friends. A children's classic. Very lightest of bumps to top and tail of spine. Hint of rubbing to a couple of corners, which are still lovely and sharp for age. Foxing/browning to endpapers and a few foxspots to outer page edges and a couple of page margins, else contents are fine. Wrapper (117th thousand on rear flap denoting first issue) is a little grubby to edges/folds and spine with lightest of creasing in a couple of places - a really fantastic example of a wrapper this age - has been really well looked after. Book is now also contained in a custom made black slip-case, which is in excellent condition and has helped to keep the book in superb condition! This copy would make a wonderful gift.         Winnie-the-Pooh.

London: Methuen & Co., 1926 - Octavo. Finely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in green morocco, titles and pictorial centre tools to spine, rule to boards gilt, multiple pictorial blocks to boards, floral endpapers, twin rule to turn-ins, gilt edges. A fine copy. Illustrated by E. H. Shepard. First edition, first impression. The little bear described by Christopher Milne in his autobiography as his "inseparable companion" has also become the inseparable companion of generations of children, often remaining the object of that faith late into adulthood. First appearing in 1924, along with his troop of animal friends, in When We Were Very Young, Winnie-the-Pooh was immortalised in Milne's two volumes of poetry and two story books. The illustrations by E. H. Shepard are probably as much loved as Milne's words - the combination of their talents making the books' appeal so remarkably enduring.

        ULYSSES

Paris Shakespeare and Company 1926 - The first printing of Ulysses to have the type entirely reset, work accomplished with Joyce’s participation, the 8th printing overall and one of the key Shakespeare and Company printings, very early and desirable. Small 4to, in a handsome contemporary binding of three-quarter green morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, the spine evenly toned to a pleasant honey color and with simple raised bands ruled in blind, red morocco label lettered and framed in gilt, t.e.g. (6), 735 pp. A very desirable copy in contemporary binding, the paper still quite fresh for this title and all very sturdy and sound. With a bit of quite pleasant and expected mellowing by time. ONE OF THE KEY PRINTINGS BY SYLVIA BEACH’S SHAKESPEARE AND COMPANY OF THIS LANDMARK OF 20th CENTURY LITERATURE. It is the first reprinting of the work to use entirely reset type. The work was accomplished with Joyce’s participation. The copy is bound as is often found on printings of the period in a simple style designed to draw little attention to itself due the controversy of the text within. In all a highly collectable copy. ULYSSES can be viewed as the pinnacle of the Modernist movement, and its impact on all subsequent western literature is unmistakable. Such writers as Virginia Woolf, John Dos Passos, William Faulkner, Samuel Beckett, Malcolm Lowry, and Anthony Burgess have all paid tribute, consciously or unconsciously, to Joyce's influence. Burgess as well pronounced it the greatest single work in the English literature of the century, and he was not alone in that opinion. At the beginning of the present century the Modern Library placed ULYSSES in the number one spot on their 100 best books of the 20th century list. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        La Tentation de Saint Antoine

Paris: Societe D' Editions et de Librairie Henri Reynaud, (1926). Text in French. 20 full color pochoir illustrations printed on Imperial Japon paper with an additional suite of the same 20 images bound in throughout on Arches paper. Contemporary burgundy morocco binding with raised bands and marbled slipcase. a.e.g. A Fine copy.& & LIMITED EDITION. One of 30 deluxe numbered copies (out of a total edition of 343) printed on Imperial Japon paper.& & These exquisite, dreamy images from Szyk's Paris period represent the artist's mastery of symbolism and mysticism. It is not unreasonable to suspect that Szyk might have been influenced by Hieronymus Bosch's nightmarish 16th diptych of the same title. Szyk's unique style in the Temptation is wholly uncharacteristic of Szyk's familiar medieval -influenced work and is found in only one other work, Le Puits de Jacob (also from the Paris period).& & The pochoir printing technique used here reproduces illustrations that are nearly three-dimensional in quality.& & St. Anthony the Great (c. 251 - 356 CE) is the fabled “first Christian monk” and the father of the ascetic doctrine.&

Paris: Albin Michel, Editeur, 1926. Text in French. Two volumes. 221pp. and 239pp. Profusely illustrated black and white line drawings and sketches. Original pictorial wrappers printed on acid paper. Wrappers fragile. Very scarce.& & FIRST EDITION. Szyk's political and satirical wit is exulted in these books of illustrated cartoon jokes divided into categories such as education, hygiene, cafes, and society life.& & Szyk's wife Julia wrote in her memoirs…“In 1925, Arthur illustrated a small book called 'Le Juif Qui Rit'. It was a book of jokes and humorous stories…illustrated with satirical works. It came about in a curious manner. One night while sitting in a cafe in Montparnasse a friend of ours brought to our table the gentlemen Bienstock and Curnonsky. They were introduced as the greatest humorists of the times. They began to relate anecdotes. Arthur, always a lover of stories and humor began to tell them Polish stories. The evening was spent in laughter. At the end of the evening Mr. Curnonsky broached the subject of a book of stories just related. Arthur was not enthusiastic since he had always used his art for a definite purpose. They finally prevailed upon him to say 'yes' and the book was eventually printed in France that year.” The title of his book was not chosen by accident, “The Laughing Jew”. It serves as “both an answer to our detractors as well as a way for us to see images of truthfulness about ourselves.”&

DE MAUPASSANT, GUY. La Maison Tellier. Illustre par Lobel-Riche. Paris: Javal et Bourdeaux, 1926. First Edition with these illustrations, Hors de Commerce copy, separate from limited edition of 375 copies. Small 4to, light green printed wraps, text in loose signatures, as issued, 12 full-page and 3 smaller engraved reproductions of occasionally erotic drawings by Lobel-Riche, extra loose set of the engraved illustrations printed in sepia with small remarque illustrations in margins (plus one additional plate not called for in the book) , and single sheet of green paper with four (4) original pencil sketches by Lobel-Riche (several heightened in red pencil) , signed at bottom right by the artist. Wraps sun-browned at spine, minor wear at edges, original glassine over wrapper chipped and torn at edges with early owner's hand-lettered title in ink at spine torn and partly lacking, text quite good, slight aging, text and plates very clean, sheet with original illustrations with some aging at edges, offsetting to protective paper folder. The edition consisted of 75 copies on Japon Ancien with the plates in four or five states, and 300 copies on Velin d'Arches with plates in two or three states; there were also 42 additional lettered or Roman-numbered copies on Japon Imperial or Arches. This copy is an Hors de Commerce copy similar to the 200 copies on Arches with plates in two states, with the addition of the sheet with original drawings; the limitation leaf cites no other issue which also included an original drawing although there probably were some. One set is with and one without additional small drawings in the lower margin. A number of additional graphics are available. ; 0 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
