London: Mills & Boon. (1926). First. First edition. Octavo. 136, 16 ads pp., plates. Green cloth. A slight bump on the front board, very good or better without dustwrapper. Inscribed by one of the co-authors: "To George Standing in grateful remembrance of the pleasure of meeting. Clarence N. Bruce. Jan. 1928." Not to be confused with either tennis or squash, rackets or racquets is an indoor racquet sport played in the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada. The sport is infrequently called "hard rackets," possibly to distinguish it from the related sport of squash (formerly called "squash rackets"). Both authors were rackets champions and the recipient, George Standing, was the head professional at the New York Racket and Tennis Club, and was runner-up for the World Championship in 1897. .

Original Photo Portrait of Douglas Fairbanks in The Black Pirate

United Artists, Hollywood 1926 - A beautiful original 8" x 10" portrait of Douglas Fairbanks as he appeared in the silent film classic "The Black Pirate." A couple of tiny chips along the white margins and a couple of tiny mends to the verso of the photo. Near fine. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

AUTOGRAPHED LETTER SIGNED (ALS) to his son James about football, Warm Springs, and building a dam

13 October 1926, Warm Springs - A superb two-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER on both sides of Roosevelt's personal Hyde Park stationery, completely in FDR's hand, to his son James Roosevelt SIGNED as "Father." Roosevelt begins by talking about Jimmy's life at school, especially football--"your old Dad is keen to hear about it all-- and he was once a Freshman himself!"--before talking about Warm Springs from which this letter is addressed: "I'm working hard on my exercises down here & our medical experiment period has been a joint success--all of the 25 patients have greatly benefited. I hope this winter to get enough people to finance it on a much larger permanent basis" (FDR established the Warm Springs Foundation in 1927). "Next winter I will come here in Feb. instead of going to Florida & I wish much that you would come down here at the midyears or at Easter- I would love to have you here alone. There are lots of interesting problems- Just now I am organizing the fishing club & getting ready to let the contract for the big dam which will make a 35 acre lake. This project should finance itself in 3 years- Lots of love-- Take care of yourself. Affect. Father." Wonderful content touching upon many of FDR's interests and foreshadowing the TVA program begun in his administration. James Roosevelt became an insurance executive, a position he left in 1937 to become secretary to his father in the White House. He was decorated for his service as a Marine in World War II. Autograph letters completely in Franklin Roosevelt's hand are quite scarce, most especially so when to a family member. Normal creases from folding. About Fine [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Going Somewhere

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1926. First. First edition. Some very light chipping to the cloth at the crown, some dampstaining to both the boards and the bottom margins of the pages, a sound, fair only copy lacking the dustwrapper. This copy Inscribed to Dorothy Peterson: "For Dorothy Peterson this book of caricature of scenes with which she is familiar, Max Ewing. New York. January 5 - 1933." Peterson was the model for the female heroine of Carl Van Vechten's novel Nigger Heaven. According to Notable Black American Women (p.842-4), "Van Vechten... modeled the heroine of the novel, Mary Love -- the beautiful librarian concerned with her racial heritage, after Dorothy Peterson." He also modeled the home of another character on her home, which was one of Harlem's most important and well-attended literary salons. Peterson, who co-founded both the Harlem Experimental Theatre and the Harlem Suitcase Theatre, also devoted herself to collecting manuscripts of Harlem Renaissance notables, and eventually helped Van Vechten donate the material that was the basis for the James Weldon Johnson Memorial Collection of Negro Arts and Letters at Yale University. She was a sponsor of the short-lived but influential periodical Fire!!, and was also reputed to be "the one Afro-American woman [Jean] Toomer [who soon after married a white woman] was once thought to care about." (Langston Hughes, before and beyond Harlem, p.214). The inscription in this book would indicate that Ewing was apparently familiar with the literary party scene of which Peterson was near the center. Not surprisingly, Ewing's papers also went to Yale, whether through Peterson's intercession is not known to us. .

        The Long Journey

1926 - Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951) was an American Impressionist artist, and a member of the Ten American Painters. He began his Studies at the school of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1879, under Otto Grundmann, and later studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Upon return to America, he would become an instructor at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1888 Benson gained favorable attention in his first showing with the Society of American Artist in New York, with a piece that suggested the influence of academic Realism rather than Impressionism. By the early 1890s he began using his family as subjects; Benson later recalled having realized at the time that ¿design¿ was the most important component of painting. Consequently, works of the period provided evidence of a greater interest in patterns, silhouette, and abstract design. Late in his career, Frank Benson returned his boyhood interest in ornithological illustration. Following the 1913 Amory Show, Benson quietly moved to revolutionize the field of American sporting art. His rendering of wildlife, hunting, fishing, and camping infused the field with heightened artistic sensitivity, and reinvigorated a tradition- burdened field. Historical accounts indicate that Benson¿s teenage bird studies were extremely realistic. We can infer that they were similar to works by Alexander Pope (American, 1849-1924) and Louis Agassiz Fuertes (American, 1874-1927). Those painters concentrated on painting objects with precision. Each blue jay painted by Fuertes had exactly the same color tones and patterns. This is realism in the sense that twelve jays in a cage look precisely the same. In contrast, Benson¿s artistic training brought him to realize that a viewer¿s experience of a jay¿s appearance varies with the tint of light cast by the sky, whether the jay is front lit or back lit, and the background. Furthermore, Benson realized that we did not perceive the precise feather pattern of a bird at a distance of 20 feet. Benson had learned that our eyes perceive light, not objects, and he introduced that realization into the sporting art field. Other artists such as Roland Clark, A. L. Ripley, and Richard Bishop quickly followed his lead. In 1915 he first exhibited etchings of wild fowl, to popular acclaim. After 1920 Benson turned increasingly to the depiction of landscapes featuring wild life, an outgrowth of his interest in hunting and fishing, from then on producing a steady and profitable output of etchings and watercolors in this vein. At the request of fellow artist and conservationist Jay Norwood ¿Ding¿ Darling, Benson designed the second Federal Duck Stamp on 1935. Etching, 13 3/4 x 16 inches

To Jesse Lasky, in New York City: "Enclosed is a letter I received from Percival Wren, the author of BEAU GESTE. I am also sending a copy to Mr. Zukor. You once said.that it was your ambition to produce a picture which could be released on the same day and date in every principal city in the world. It is naturally my ambition to direct this picture. What we all did with Beau Geste Proves that we Americans can produce a picture which will appeal equally to every Anglo-Saxon mind in the world."; Paramount Pictures released "Beau Geste" on August 1, 1927, directed by Herbert Brenon. The cast included Ronald Colman, Neil Hamilton, Ralph Forbes and Alice Joyce. AUTOGRAPHS VERY GOOD. Signed by Author(s).

The Secret of the Ages Vols. I-7

ROBERT COLLIER, NY 1926 - Published as The Book of Life in 1925 First edition thus General wear, worn corners/extremities, tanned spines, age-toned pages, few vols. have foxing, hinges "opened," good binding, clean bodies and unmarked texts. The World's Greatest Discovery, "You can do as much as you think you can, But you'll never accomplish more; If you're afriad of yourself, young man, There's little for you in store. For failure comes from the inside first, It's there if we only knew it, And you can win, though you face the worst, If you feel that your going to do it."-Edgar A. Guest. What, in your opinion, is the most significant discovery of this modern age? The finding of Dinosaur eggs on the plains of Mongolia, laid-so scientists assert-some 10,000,000 years ago? The unearthing of the Tomb of Tutankham-Amen, with its matchless speciments of a bygone civilization? From "A Heap of Living" The Reilly & Lee Co. The radio-active time cloth by which Professor Lane of Tufts College estimates the age of the earth at 1,250,000,000 years? Wireless? The Aeroplane? Manmade thunderbolts? No-not any of these. The really significant thing about them is that from all this vast research, from the study of all the bygopne ages, men are for the first time beginning to get an understanding of that "Life Principle" which-some how, some way-was brought to this earth thousands or millions of years ago. They are beginning to get an inkling of the infinite power it puts in their hands-to glimpse the untold possibilities it opens up. This is the greatest discovery of modern times-that every man can call upon this "Life Principle" at will, that it is as much the servant of his mind as was every Aladdin's fabled "genie-of-the-lamp" of old; that he has but to understamd it and work in harmony with it to get from it anything he may need-health or happiness, riches or success. To realize the truth of this, you have but to go back for a moment to the beginning of things. The Purpose of Existence, No one can follow it down through the ages without realizing that the whole purpose of existence is GROWTH. Life is dynamic-not static. It is ever moving forward-not standing still. The one unpardonable sin of nature is to stand still, to stagnate. The Gigantosaurus, that was over a hundred feet long and as big as a house; the Tyrannosaurus, that had the strength of a locomotive and was the last word in frightfulness; the Pterodactyl or Flying Dragon- all the giant monsters of Prehistoric Ages-are gone. They ceased to serve a useful purpose. They did not know how to meet the changing conditions. They stood still-stagnated-while the life around them passed them by DATE PUBLISHED: 1926 EDITION: [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
