Telegramm.

Starnberg und Seebenstein, 22.VIII. 1925 - 8.I. 1926. Vollmer II, 67). - Mit altem Sammlungsumschlag.

MARK TWAIN Versus THE STREET RAILWAY CO. MARK TWAIN ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT MATERIAL FOR THE BOOK MARK TWAIN versus THE STREET RAILWAY CO

The original material used by John S. Mayfield in publishing his book, Mark Twain Versus The Street Railway Company (np. 1926) The letters and documents comprising the manuscript are all tipped into a first edition copy of Mark Twain's Autobiography (New York, 1924; Harper ad Brothers). Two volumes large octavo, dust jackets and original box. The material consists of the following items: 1. Autograph letter signed by Mark Twain, 2 pages on black bordered stationary, dated May 5, 1906, to Owen Root, Jr. General Manager of the railway company. Twain eloquently states that his daughters are "frequently robbed by conductors on the surface lines" and that this time his eldest daughter took note of "the thief's" number and the time and place of the incident. 2. Autograph letter signed "S.L. Clemens," 2 pages on black bordered stationary dated May 13, 1906, to Owen Root, Jr. General Manager of the railway company. Twain replies to the Owen Root letter of May 9, 1906 (in full): "Dear Sir: I thank you very much for the trouble you have taken in investigating the complain I entered, and acknowledge with thanks the receipt of stamps amounting to 20 cents. The conductor against whom that charge can be made only once in two years must be a valuable man, and I should be the last one to wish to get him into trouble. Yours Very Truly/S.L. Clemens" ("To Owen Root, Jr., Esq.") 3. Autograph letter signed "Clemens" to James Redpath, 1 page, dated June 14, 1871. Twain writes that he is "hard at work" on a book similar to the Innocents (The Innocents Abroad). 4. Autograph letter signed "Mark" to James Redpath, 1 page dated May 15, 1873. Twain writes to his friend that he is sailing in the Batavia (for London) on Saturday and gives his London address. 5. Autograph signatures of Twain "S.L. Clemens/Mark Twain" tipped into one of the preliminaries of volume one. 6. Black-bordered card tipped onto the title page of volume two: "Mr. S.L. Clemens, 21 Fifth Avenue." 7. Carbon copy of a type letter from Owen Root, Jr., V-P and General Manager of the railway company to Mark Twain, 2 pages dated May 9, 1906; Mr. Root apologizes to Mr. Twain and acknowledges that his conductor may have been mistaken. Mr. Root encloses 20 cents in stamps to reimburse Miss Clemens for change she should have received. 8. Autograph document signed (an affidavit) by John Burgess, the conductor involved in the incident; 3 pages dated May 1, 1906. The affidavit is accompanied by a TLS by the Division General Foreman, dated May 8, 1906, explaining his interview with the accused conductor; a map is attached to rear paste-down. 9. Autograph letter signed to Herbert S. Stone, from E.C. Stedman, 2 pages dated March 13, 1894. The letter concerns a Poe item in Stedman's possession, about which an article has appeared in the newspaper. Stedman tells Stone that he has found the other Poe like his-the only other one. It is The Tale of the Ragged Mountains, and W.E. Benjamin had it, but sold it to a customer for $500. 10. Autograph letter signed to Chauncey M. Depew (of Cambridge) from E.C. Stedman, April 17, 1888. Stedman writes that his and Depew's remarks against demands for "brain-testing" he is giving his friend, the editor of The Youths Companion, a letter to Depew (from a 3rd party). Stedman adds, "for I suspect that you would rather write a paper for the youngsters than to do anything else out of railroading ad politics." 11. A printed letter signed by the author, George Washington Cable, to Edmund C. Stedman [n.p., n.d.], saying hat it had been agreed among some 150 friends of Twain to write to him asking for his autograph. These letters would be mailed so that all would reach Twain on April 1st and would constitute an April Fool's Joke; none of the letters would contain a self-addressed stamped envelope. This Aprils Fool's joke includes the envelope postmarked March 29, 1884. 12. A first edition of the book Mark Twain vs. The Street Railway Company, (n.p. 1926). BAL 3540 All the abov.

Inscribed and signed by the author on the ffep: "To Alice Lewis—Sincerely. Will James III-'26." Beneath the inscription is a pen-and-ink drawing of a galloping horse, measuring approximately 3 ½ in x 2 ½ in. This copy is in an un-restored DJ which is in better condition than usually found. Early printings of this title signed are quite uncommon; inscribed and signed copies are even more uncommon; but an early copy signed, inscribed, and with an original drawing are quite rare.         Catalogue of the Edward E. Ayer Ornithological Library [2 Vols., 1926 1st Edition]

Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago 1926 - Chicago: Field Museum of Natural History, 1926. First Editions [2 volumes, Part I and Part II]. Original wrappers bound in. 8vo, modern buckram boards, spine lettered in gilt. Fine, flawless, including the original wrappers bound in, which look virtually as they must have when first printed. Probably the finest surviving set of the original masterwork by Edward Ayer, assembled by John Todd Zimmer for the Field Museum one year before Ayer's death. Ayer is described by the Museum as one who has been the "principal benefactor" of its library. His personal financial endowments were just part of that; his own accumulated book and print collections became the source for much of that library's essence. "His particular interest in the continuous development of the Ayer Ornithology Library during Ayer's lifetime was driven by his desire that it should be among the foremost collections of its kind. His success in achieving this goal became evident in the year before his death when the Museum published John Todd Zimmer's Catalogue of the Edward E. Ayer Ornithological Library (Chicago, 1926). This classic of ornithological bibliography clearly confirmed the Ayer Collection as one of the finest in the world." - From the Field Museum online site. An exceptional, pristine set.         ALL THE SAD YOUNG MEN

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926.. Green cloth, lettered in gilt and blind. Expert restorations to spine extremities and joints, light foxing to prelims, small discoloration at top edge of first several leaves, but a good, sound copy. Half morocco slipcase. First edition of this collection of short stories (presumably the earliest printing, with no signs of type deterioration on pages 38, 90 and 248). Inscribed by Fitzgerald on the front free endsheet: "For Anne Ober [/] Hoping that none of her descendents will be sad young men [/] F. Scott Fitzgerald." With the ink signature of Harold Ober on the opposite pastedown. Harold Ober served as F. Scott Fitzgerald's literary agent beginning in November 1919, and until the end of Fitzgerald's career, as his confidant and friend. Anne and Harold Ober were particularly significant in providing support for Scottie Fitzgerald after Zelda was hospitalized. There are a few small pencil notes in the table of contents. A fine association copy. BRUCCOLI A12.I.A.

        All the Sad Young Men

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. 1926. First. First edition, first issue. Two owner's names on the front endpapers, else a fine, bright copy in an attractive, just about fine dustwrapper with a couple of tiny nicks at the corners of the crown. The figure on the jacket has only nominally "battered" lips, supposedly an indication that it was printed early in the run. A lovely copy. .

        Satanu. Basen. (Satan. A Poem)

Prague: The artist (Vrsovice: L.P.) 1926 - Published in an edition of 17 copies, this is a highly dramatic work illustrating the eponymous poem by Carducci (1835-1907), noted poet, historian and politician. SATANU is a magnificent work in large format (59 x 34 cm) with 11 full-page hand-colored woodcuts and 3 smaller linocuts, also in color. Váchal made the paper by hand, created the 1000 printed characters of his own making, and printed it in his studio in the Prague district of Vrsovice. The book is signed in the colophon and numbered by three thumbprints and four fingerprints, making this the seventh copy. Vachal presents us with a series of visual meditations that are some of his strongest, including an abstraction with alchemical symbols and possibly one of the most remarkable busts of the Lord of Darkness in the frontispiece. The artist was a lover of fine literature and poetry, and Carducci provides ample catalytic power in his strong declaration of free thought and personal autonomy for the individual. This book was published in the period of what could be considered the zenith of Váchal’s output (1918-1933) and is one of his undisputed masterworks. This copy is unbound as issued. There is light offsetting as usual on the Title. This book was handmade by Váchal and, as was his general custom, issued in loose sheets to his buyers who would take it as is and have them bound if desired. Váchal did not normally bind his private printing, doing so in very few cases such as with the mammoth ŠUMAVA, and even then only three or four out of the full edition of eleven. Each of Váchal´s private works may be considered unique and differ from the works destined for larger publication which were normally bound and more consistent (“larger” publications usually ran between 75 and 150 copies). Often one finds slight variations between one and another copy, just as his work was subject to spontaneous elements ad libitum. It is unquestionably noted as a book production in the catalogue raisonné. References: JOSEF VÁCHAL, a catalogue raisonné. Prague: Argestea, 1994. Catalogue K20, page 457; illustrated pp. 331-333.         The Land Of Mist

New York, George H. Doran Company 1926., 1926. First US Edition. 8vo. Near fine in publisher's green cloth with titles in black to spine and front board. Some residue remains of a white paper label that appears to have been fixed to the lower edge of the front board, aprt from this residue and a slight bump to the upper right hand corner the book is exceptionally clean and lovely. Slight spotting to the page edges, the book is clad in a lovely example of the fragile dustwrapper, wear to extremities and chipping to the top right hand corner of the front panel and to the base of the spine, otherwise unfaded and bright, some slight toning to the green and cream rear panel and spine but the virtues far outweigh the shortcomings. Scarce in the wrapper and even scarcer in a wrapper that doesn't look like it heaved itself down the Amazon wracked with yellow fever and babbling about dinosaurs. The third story in the series featuring Professor George Challenger, one of the most memorable characters in speculative fiction. Doyle's other great character beside Sherlock Holmes, Challenger had already starred in two novels 'The Lost World' (1912), and 'The Poison Belt' (1913) and would later appear in 'When the World Screamed' and 'The Disintegration Machine'; Brilliant, witty, insufferable, and blessed with a booming voice and a huge black beard, Challenger is an eccentric and able champion of the human race. Given the author's preoccupation with Spritism at this time, 'The Land of Mist' turned out to be a psychic adventure. Green and Gibson; A Bibliography of Arthur Conan Doyle.

Typescripts with Author's Corrections for Two or Three Graces.

      - 103ff. typed carbon sheets comprising the typescripts for the complete contents of Huxley's 1926 collection, Two or Three Graces. In addition to the title novella, the collection contains three shorter stories: "The Monocle," "Fairy Godmother," and "Half-Holiday." This is likely the setting copy for the book, as some of the pencil notations are concerned with matters of font selection and page breaks; also, it has the Little & Ives receipt stamp on the verso of page 4, showing it as being received on 8 December 1925. Huxley composed almost all of his works on the typewriter, and these typescripts show the author's changes in black and red pen, as well as an editor's annotations in pencil for the printer. The title of "Fairy Godmother" was changed by Huxley, and the first page of the story has a slip from the publisher tipped into the margin. Housed in a specially-made, folding cloth chemise and a green morocco-backed slipcase. Some edgewear is present to the thin typing paper, and a marginal tear to page 74 has resulted in slight text loss. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
