        Ondes et mouvements

Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1926 - , vi, 133pp., sewn PAPERBACK, chipped at top and bottom of spine, and curved along bottom section due to slack shelving, a few substantive pencil notations in margins on a few pages, horizontal offsetting marks or similar printing anomaly on half-title and title, discount stamp on title page, Collection de physique mathématique, fascicule 1. Contents : La dynamique des quanta. - L’optique des quanta. - Statistique des quanta. / The de Broglie story is myth and history in one. Younger son of an old aristocratic family, with years of productivity lost to the first World War, then the almost sudden discovery of wave mechanics which he himself dated to his three notes of 1923, of which his 1924 thesis was an exanded version (Abragam, p.29). The great jury confronted with the thesis (Cartan, Langevin, Perrin, Mauguin) could not fully appreciate the discovery and it was sent to Einstein for evaluation. Schroedinger added the decisive steps in 1926. Or as Steven Weinberg re-tells it: "De Broglie guessed that the electron can be regarded as some sort of wave" and "he did not invent any sort of dynamical wave equation." And, despite the high expectations, "he did virtually nothing else of scientific importance"; it was "Schrödinger in Vienna who in 1925-26 transformed de Broglie's rather vague ideas about electron waves into a precise and coherent mathematical formalism" (Dreams of a Final Theory, pp. 69-70). The book is, in any case, a monument. . [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Gute Expl. THE GREAT GOD BROWN. THE FOUNTAIN. THE MOON OF THE CARIBBEES. And Other Plays

Boni and Liveright, New York 1926 - INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To/Elizabeth Shepley Sergeant--/Eugene O'Neill." Elizabeth Shepley Sergeant published her first article in 1910 in McCLURE'S MAGAZINE where she met Willa Cather, who was working as an editor there. Sergeant became one of the original contributors to THE NEW REPUBLIC and was sent by the magazine to Paris in 1917 to cover the war. Her own experience of being seriously wounded by a grenade was the basis for her book, SHADOW-SHAPES: THE JOURNAL OF A WOUNDED WOMAN (1920). Upon her return to the United States and on her doctor's advice, she moved to Taos, New Mexico, where she wrote about the Pueblo Indians and New Mexico until moving to New York in the mid-1930s. She authored several books and many biographical profiles of writers and other important American figures. A number of marginal marks and changes to publication dates in the text, all in pencil, possibly by Sergeant. Spine dull but readable with light wear to the tips. Very Good, lacking the dustwrapper [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

[Photo Album]: United States Travels in 1926 and 1927 including photographs of Charles Lindbergh's Paris Flight

United States, Paris. 1926-1927. Octavo. Sting-tied black leather measuring 7" x 9" with "Kodak Library" stamped in gilt on the spine. Contained within the photo album are 233 sepia toned photographs of various sizes affixed to stiff black paper with captions. Heavily rubbed boards, tiny tears, and some abrasions, else very good. A collection of photographs from trips across the United States from 1926-1927 starting in Southern California. The album documents the journey which included sand dunes, alligator farms, Hopi Indian runners, and the skeleton of a horse left to parish in the desert. The company traveled extensively with stops in Arizona, New Mexico, Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, New York, Philadelphia, and also Niagara Falls and Paris. Photographs of iconic American landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell are present along with family shots and landscapes. Mixed throughout the album are 28 photographs of various pilots and aircraft from the year of the race to fly over the Atlantic for the $25,000 Orteig Prize. Included in these are Clarence D. Chamberlin and his team, the "French flying ace," Rene Fonck and the wreckage from his crash landing where two of his team died; the "Miss America of Aviation," Ruth Elder; and the infamous Charles Lindbergh. The Lindbergh photos follow his iconic journey in The Spirit of St. Louis traveling from Long Island to Paris becoming the first person to make a solo flight and spend one day in both North America and Europe. There is an action shot of the plane captioned, "Lindy leaving for Paris," and one of the crowd of people in the streets cheering his arrival. An excellent portrait of a year of American history full of iconography and the thrill of early aviation celebrities. .

Wilson's chapbook describing his purchase of Auden's New York library, he specifically refers to this copy, purchased by Auden as a student: "...and some astute purchases made at that time, such as Laura Riding's first book A Close Chaplet... bearing his college signature." .

        The Close Chaplet

London: Published by Leonard & Virginia Woolf at The Hogarth Press,, 1926. Octavo. Original blue boards, white paper title label to upper board printed in black. Spine faded, boards rubbed at the edges. Very good. First edition, sole impression. One of an unknown number printed of which a proportion were sent to America and issued by the Adelphi Company. The Hogarth Press issue is a notoriously scarce book. We know of a tiny handful of copies. Why this should be is unclear but Riding was displeased by the appellation Gottschalk and copies of her two Hogarth publications are generally found with the Germanic name inked over. Perhaps she suppressed this publication.

        Luigi of Catanzaro.

London: Privately printed by E. Archer, 1926 - Octavo. Original cream wrappers printed in black. Wrappers rubbed, tanned, and spotted. Title leaf unopened. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. One of 100 copies privately printed and signed by the author on the limitation leaf. This story was also intended for inclusion in The Doomington Wanderer in 1934, but was suppressed before publication, though there exists at least one proof copy that includes it. Many of Golding's books have themes of Jewish identity and integration, and this story is no exception, centred around a heavenly debate over the canonisation of a saint who turns out to have Jewish ancestry. Though this item is listed in the mystery bibliography Queen's Quorum, it is not in fact a mystery story, and its inclusion in that volume is inexplicable. Rare.         Rollenportrait des Opensängers Fritz Soot. Orig.-Photo.

Um 1926.. Vintage print. Silbergelatineabzug. 22,8 x 17 cm.

TAMING THE BIG BEND. A HISTORY OF THE EXTREME WESTERN PORTION OF TEXAS FROM FORT CLARK TO EL PASO

N.P.: Privately printed, [1926]., 1926. First edition. 8vo. Signed and dated by the author on front fly leaf on 4/5/27. From the library of Captain & Mrs. R. L. George, Camp Marfa, Texas, April 5, 1927. Purple cloth, gold stamping on front cover and spine, viii, 215 pp., frontis. [photograph of the author's father], preface, illustrated, plates, portraits, folding map bound-in at rear of book, index. BTB 184 says, "This worthwhile account of the Big Bend region during the 19th century is especially valuable because one of Shipman's major sources was her pioneer father, of whom she writes: 'To my father, Captain Pat Dolan, I am especially indebted. He has lived on the Texas frontier for seventy-five years and with remarkable clearness of mind recalls the stirring events of the days gone by.' She also quotes extensively from other pioneers and transients in the region, such as John L. Bullis, commander of Indian Scouts under Mackenzie; A. J. Fairmore and P. Bougad on the El Paso Salt War; Mexican outlaw Victor Ochoa; and Texas Ranger T. T. Cook. The work contains chapters on the early mail routes, the boundary commission, the camel experiment and transportation, the military posts, freighting, civil affairs, Indian Campaigns, the El Paso Salt War, Texas Ranger campaigns, ranching, outlaws, mining, and Mexican revolutionary activities after the turn of the century. This is followed by a section of sketches of early pioneer and ranching families." Six Guns 2006 says, "Scarce." "In a chapter entitled 'Law West of the Pecos' the author deals with the Texas Rangers and lawlessness. In another chapter there is mention of the Lincoln County War, Billy the Kid, John Wesley Hardin, John Selman, and other gunmen of the Southwest." Near fine, bright, square copy. An exceptional copy and a fine account of the early Anglo settlement of the Big Bend region. BTB 184. SIX GUNS 2006. HERD 2063. HOWES S422.

An excellent portrait of a year of American history full of iconography and the thrill of early aviation celebrities. .
