CRAWFORD BY RUTH HARRIET LOUISE (1926)

MGM 1926 - Vintage original 10 x 13" (25 x 33 cm.) black-and-white double weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo, USA. One of the earliest and most elegant of all Joan Crawford portraits ever photographed -- and Joan loved working in the portrait photographers' studio! She, along with Greta Garbo, adored working with the great portrait artist, Ruth Harriet Louise -- and Louise took some of the most unusual images of Crawford. Louise worked at MGM between 1925 and 1930. Here Crawford is wearing a spectacular beaded and sequined fur wrap and beaded gown. Though not credited, it is likely that this was designed by Erte who worked at MGM in 1925 and 1926 and designed the costumes for Crawford's first featured role in SALLY, IRENE AND MARY and her 1926 film PARIS, for which this is likely a portrait. This still features the Ruth Harriet Louise blind stamp at the lower right corner, her MGM ink stamp on the verso as well as the Joan Crawford Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer ink stamp. The epitome of early Art Deco glamour. FINE.

Basne na pohlednice. (Gedichte für Ansichtskarten.) 137. Band der Edition Aventinum.

Praha, Otakar-Storch-Marien, 1926.. - "Otakar Mrkvicka (1898 - 1957) studied in Prag and Munich and in the early 1920s he made magazine and book covers, advocating the principles of constructivism in collaboration with Karel Teige, using photomontage in a very early stage. ... He was co-founder of the leftist satirical journal 'Trn' and his illustrations for that journal show the influence of George Grosz, whose drawings were prominent in the first yer (1924) of 'Trn'." (John Vloemans, Avantgarda) - Umschlag berieben, etwas angestaubt, wenig angebräunt bzw. etwas lichtrandig, etwas bestoßen, die den Schnitt überragenden Ränder mit kleinen Läsuren. Seitenränder papierbedingt nur leicht angebräunt. Ansonsten ordentliches Exemplar. - Die Vorzugsausgabe (die ersten 50 von Nezval signierten Exemplare) ist selten.

Tzelem BaHeikhal [= Idol in th Temple or A Cross in the Temple] Tselem ba-hekhal

Ephraim Deinard, New Orleans, Louisiana 1926 - In Hebrew. 4. 184 pages. Original wrappers bound in later boards. Additional scans available. OCLC: Number of libraries worldwide that own this item: 8. Deinard (1846-1930) was "born in Sasmakken, Latvia. Deinard wandered in his youth, collecting ancient manuscripts and books in many countries, and then established a bookshop in Odessa. In 1897 he tried unsuccessfully to found an agricultural settlement in Nevada (U. S. ) . An active Zionist, he settled in Palestine in 1913 where he investigated the possibilities of Jewish settlement. After being expelled by the Turks in 1916 he returned to the United States and continued his bibliographical work. His two most noteworthy bibliographical works are Or Mayer: Catalogue of the Old Hebrew Manuscripts and Printed Books of the Library of the Hon. Mayer Sulzberger of Philadelphia (1896) and Koheleth America (1926) , a listing of Hebrew books published in America from 1735 to 1926. The first part of the latter work contains essays on the state of Hebrew literature in America, which are written in his unadorned, but typically acerbic, style. He laid the foundations of the Hebrew book and manuscript collections of the Library of Congress with the financial aid of Jacob Schiff. A violent polemicist on many controversial subjects, he attacked Reform Judaism, Hasidism, Christianity, and Karaism. Deinard was a prolific Hebrew writer, producing more than 50 books and pamphlets often signed with his pseudonym, Adir. These included Toledot Even Reshef (1879; a biography of Abraham Firkovich, whom he knew in the Crimea) ; Sefer Massa Krim (1878; on travels in Crimea) ; Massale-Erez Kedem (1883; travels in Palestine and Egypt) ; Sefer Miflagot be-Yisrael (1899; on the Subbotniki and Hasidim) ; Zikhronot Bat Ammi (1920; a history of Russian Jewry over the previous 70 years) . He also published several short-lived Hebrew and Yiddish journals, among them Ha-Le'ummi, one of the earliest Hebrew periodicals in America. " (Kressel in EJ, 2007) [Attributes: Hard Cover]

THE OLD SERGEANT'S STORY, WINNING THE WEST FROM THE INDIANS AND BAD MEN IN 1870-1876

Frederick H. Hitchcock, 1926., 1926. First edition. Cloth, 220pp., 8 plates. The author was a recognized Medal of Honor recipient; a participant in many campaigns against Comanche and Kiowa hostiles with Col. Ranald Mackenzie's 4th Cavalry. In 1919 & 1920, he published several pamphlets, now rare, about his Indian-fighting experiences on the southern plains. John B. Charlton, the "Old Sergeant", a comrade of Carter's throughout their years with the 4th Cavalry, read Carter's stories and wrote to Carter in 1921. This began a year and a half of frequent, lengthy correspondence between Carter and Charlton, that ended with Charlton's death in March, 1922. Through the detailed, warm correspondence between the two, Carter presents an insightful, first-hand account of the legendary campaigns of Mackenzie's 4th Cavalry from 1871 through 1874. "Mackenzie's Raid" into Mexico; the capture of outlaw "Red" McLaughlin by Charlton and, famous scout, Jack Stillwell; and the 4th Cavalry battles against the Comanches and Kiowas at McClellan's Creek, Palo Duro Canyon, and the north fork of the Red River are among the many incidents recorded. Of special interest is Charlton's account of the killing of Setank, by Charlton, when Setank, Big Tree, and Satanta were being transported to Ft. Richardson, Texas to stand trial for the killing of 7 teamsters of the Warren Wagon Train when they were attacked by Indians east of Ft. Richardson. In addition, Charlton tells Carter about his experience in Colorado, as an independent freight hauler, when, under escort of Major Thornburgh, they were attacked by Ute Indians and kept under siege for 6 days before being rescued. Charlton was hauling freight to the White River Agency in 1879, when the Utes killed Agent Meeker, captured Meeker's wife and daughter, and wreaked havoc throughout the region. Great history, and a warm and occasionally touching reflection y two "old soldiers". Indian wars historian, John M. Carroll wrote that "Carter's enormously important writings on frontier military history will be recognized as source material for all future historians." An important, first-hand record. Previous owners bookplate on front pastedown, else a fine, bright copy in protective slipcase.
