        The End Of Laissez-Faire

London: Hogarth Press, 1926. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. A near fine copy in the rare dust jacket which has a large chunk out of the top of the front panel. In The End of Laissez-Faire, Keynes presents a brief historical review of laissez-faire economic policy. Though he agrees in principle that the marketplace should be free of government interference, he suggests that government can play a constructive role in protecting individuals from the worst harms of capitalism's cycles, especially as concerns unemployment. When the Great Depression struck a few years later, this work seemed very prescient. Keynes first earned widespread prominence immediately following World War I, when he published THE ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES OF THE PEACE. This book gained a good deal of notoriety because of its withering portraits of both French premier Georges Clemenceau and US president Woodrow Wilson. Keynes criticized the Allied victors for signing a treaty that would have ruinous consequences for Europe, if not modified as he suggested. Unfortunately, few leaders appreciated Keynes's criticisms, and he saw his worst fears realized in the rise of Hitler and the devastation of World War II.

        Oceanische Rindenstoffe

Oldenburg: Gerhard Stalling Verlag, 1926. Quarto, five coloured plates (including frontispiece), 29 black & white photographic plates, illustrated; a fine copy in the original brown publisher's cloth, gilt, printed green dustwrapper rubbed and showing some wear, sunned at spine. First edition: a very scarce and important monograph on tapa and kapa cloth, richly illustrated. Hambruch's work is the second modern monograph on the subject of tapa cloth and its production, preceded only by Brigham's Ka hana kapa (Honolulu, 1911). The plates include two colour images based on samples in Alexander Shaw's famous 1787 work, A Catalogue of the Different Specimens of Cloth collected in the three voyages of Captain Cook, here referred to as the "Engl. Musterprobenbuch" (or English book of samples). Hambruch's study is, in this sense, an important companion volume to Shaw's famously rare work. Paul Hambruch (1882-1933), had studied anthropology, ethnology and geography in Berlin, and was soon appointed as a member of the Hamburg Ethnographic Museum's South Seas Expedition of 1908-1910, which had been organised by Georg Thilenius, then director of the Museum. Hambruch went on to write many important monographs on Australia and the Pacific, of which this work on tapa is the rarest and most significant. Indeed, this is a notably scarce title, particularly in such good condition and with the dustwrapper present. Copies are recorded in the National Library of Australia and the State Library of Queensland.

Biscayne Bay Section. Coral Gables. Miami, Florida.

No date. Ca. 1926. - Black and white illustrations and maps, 24pp, 12 x 9 inches, pictorial paper wrappers (softbound). Two areas of front cover and first two sheets of textblock have paper loss, light soiling to front cover, stain and discoloration to first three sheets otherwise interior in very good condition. This scarce pamphlet lays out plans for the Biscayne Bay extension of Coral Gables: "This greatest section of Coral Gables has been given the general designation of 'Biscayne Bay Section.' It will be divided into various numbered parts and will be placed on sale as rapidly as possible. A comprehensive proposed plan of the entire section is shown on page 14 of this pamphlet, but this plan is merely suggestive of the probable development of this area and the right is reserved by the Coral Gables Corporation to make any later changes that may be found necessary or expedient in all parts of the plan, except Part I which was first offered for sale on December 15, 1925, an exact plat of which (subject to minor engineering changes) is shown on page 11 of this pamphlet, and Part II, shown on pages 12 and 13. Part II of the Biscayne Bay Section was first placed on sale on January 20. It will be noted that these plats extend to within a few hundred feet of the present shore line of Biscayne Bay. This shore line will be extended by filling to be done in Biscayne Bay." There are two full page maps (Part I of the Biscayne Bay section and 'Tentative Comprehensive Map Biscayne Bay Section of Coral Gables, Fla.') and a centrefold map 'Biscayne Bay Section Part II.' The text describes the luxurious features of the development and the building restrictions. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

KEUSCHE SUSANNE, DIE [GIRL IN THE TAXI] (1926)

Germany 1926 - Vintage original 37 x 49" (94 x 124 cm.) poster, Germany. Lillian Harvey, Ruth Weyher, Willy Fritsch, Wilhelme Bendow, Sascha Bragowa, Werner Fuetterer, Jean Gilbert, dir: Richard Desvallieres; Richard Eichberg-Film GmbH/UFA. By poster artist Robert Schmidt. Lillian Harvey, British born but brought up in Germany, became a sweetheart of German cinema, in this, her first film. Opera trained, she would go on to film a series of operetta type movies in the era of the early talking films, including some in Hollywood. In this film she became teamed with Willy Fritsch, and they would go on to make 11 films together. They were considered the "dream couple" of German cinema. This film (though silent) was based on an operetta (literally translated as "Chaste Susanne") by Jean Gilbert. What is important about this charming poster is that it represents German expressionism in its lightest and perhaps most pleasantly appealing form. Little is known about the Viennese graphic designer Robert Schmidt, but he did create exciting poster art for UFA, including METROPOLIS. On linen, NEAR FINE.

THE HAMILTON RICE EXPEDITION TO THE PARIMA MOUNTAINS IN BRAZIL; June, 1924 to June, 1925.

Self published, [1926]., [Boston]: - 66 pp. First edition; self published; hand bound presentation copy signed by Shattuck on March 16, 1970. Blue cloth with gold lettering stamped down spine; red and white headbands; typed sheets; illustrated with 51 original, black and white photographs; 4 hand-drawn maps. Holographic text with black and white photographs mounted on double weight gray archival paper. Binding tight; boards clean; internally pristine; see additional images provided. This work written c. 1970 from notes and memory by the author, a graduate of Harvard Medical School, 1901. At the time of the expedition, Shattuck was a member of the Dept. Tropical Medicine, Harvard Univ. He was asked by Hamilton ["Ham"] Fish, well-known medical man and explorer, to accompany him on an expedition to Manaus, along with Rice and others, "to make a study of the diseases of the region while he was preparing to explore the Rio Branco to its source." Rice had led other expeditions to South America before, and on this one he mapped the Rio Branco, Uraricuera, and Parima (all different parts of the same river) to its source. Reports of this expedition were written and published by Rice in the Geographical Journal. Very interesting and detailed account, in terms of medicine, indigenous culture, and history. The original photographs, which are the author's own, with typed captions beneath, are fine. A rare work, written late in life by a famous M.D. and medical researcher. Quoting the text, p. 54: "The Chief was a thoughtful-looking man and of intermediate age. Like the other men, he was practically naked. His old mother, who wore a bead apron, was vigorous and downright. One could easily believe that she made the decisions for the Chief. Rightly enough, she regarded us as intruders who would bring no good to her people. Perhaps for this reason the Chief steadfastly refused to sell us food or to permit his people to aid us in any way. Nevertheless, they held a fiesta to which we were invited. After a short time I was bored and returned to camp but Bull and others stayed there for most of the night. Fearing to arouse superstitions which might wreck the expedition, I made no attempt to examine any of the Indians nor did I offer treatment. This is a rare work and the accompanying original photographs make it truly unique. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT POEM (Juvenilia - 4 pages): "Bank Holiday"

[1926] 1926 - Exceptionally scarce 4-page AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT of a poem written by Auden as a teenager. Published in THE OXFORD OUTLOOK in November 1926 and not published in book form until 1994 in W. H. AUDEN JUVENILIA edited by Katherine Bucknell, from which much of the information below was acquired. Two other manuscript copies of this poem are known to exist, in the collections of David Ayerst (Bloomfield J16) and of Christopher Isherwood, neither exactly identical to this but both resembling this much more than the published version which eliminated several stanzas present here. All told there are 78 lines divided into three sections on both sides of two 6-7/8" x 8-7/8" sheets of paper watermarked "Civic Bond" that have long ago been neatly joined by a conservator who also made several paper repairs. The poem begins "The queen's hand on the king's cold shoulder falling." Bucknell points out that the poem is reminiscent of THE WASTE LAND with the left out passages revealing some borrowing from Eliot's "The Hollow Men." This manuscript was acquired along with a letter from Auden to Robert Medley and was likely given to Medley at some point. Auden met and became friends with Medley in 1922 shortly after Auden's 15th birthday. It was Robert Medley who suggested that Auden try writing poetry. Later Medley helped to create the Group Theater where he provided scenery and costumes for the play ON THE FRONTIER by Auden and Isherwood. Several words on the last page are partly faded and obliterated by a repaired tear. A spectacular find in Good to Very Good condition
