Szyk's political and satirical wit is exulted in these books of illustrated cartoon jokes divided into categories such as education, hygiene, cafes, and society life.& & Szyk's wife Julia wrote in her memoirs…“In 1925, Arthur illustrated a small book called 'Le Juif Qui Rit'. It was a book of jokes and humorous stories…illustrated with satirical works. It came about in a curious manner. One night while sitting in a cafe in Montparnasse a friend of ours brought to our table the gentlemen Bienstock and Curnonsky. They were introduced as the greatest humorists of the times. They began to relate anecdotes. Arthur, always a lover of stories and humor began to tell them Polish stories. The evening was spent in laughter. At the end of the evening Mr. Curnonsky broached the subject of a book of stories just related. Arthur was not enthusiastic since he had always used his art for a definite purpose. They finally prevailed upon him to say 'yes' and the book was eventually printed in France that year.” The title of his book was not chosen by accident, “The Laughing Jew”. It serves as “both an answer to our detractors as well as a way for us to see images of truthfulness about ourselves.”&

First Edition with these illustrations, Hors de Commerce copy, separate from limited edition of 375 copies. Small 4to, light green printed wraps, text in loose signatures, as issued, 12 full-page and 3 smaller engraved reproductions of occasionally erotic drawings by Lobel-Riche, extra loose set of the engraved illustrations printed in sepia with small remarque illustrations in margins (plus one additional plate not called for in the book) , and single sheet of green paper with four (4) original pencil sketches by Lobel-Riche (several heightened in red pencil) , signed at bottom right by the artist. Wraps sun-browned at spine, minor wear at edges, original glassine over wrapper chipped and torn at edges with early owner's hand-lettered title in ink at spine torn and partly lacking, text quite good, slight aging, text and plates very clean, sheet with original illustrations with some aging at edges, offsetting to protective paper folder. The edition consisted of 75 copies on Japon Ancien with the plates in four or five states, and 300 copies on Velin d'Arches with plates in two or three states; there were also 42 additional lettered or Roman-numbered copies on Japon Imperial or Arches. This copy is an Hors de Commerce copy similar to the 200 copies on Arches with plates in two states, with the addition of the sheet with original drawings; the limitation leaf cites no other issue which also included an original drawing although there probably were some. Better than Near Fine (slight lean, fronrtend papers toned, several marginal stains to text) copy of Hemingway's first novel and second book to be published in America, one of only 1250 copies printed. Provenance: circular blindstamp of Ray McRae to front fly leaf, small bookseller's ticket of Brentano's, Paris, to lower paste down. Hanneman A4.A. The author's first novel, published by Scribner's after Boni and Liveright rejected it. In this slim volume, Hemingway parodied Sherwood Anderson's Dark Laughter (1925), and because Anderson was under contract with Boni and Liveright, that publisher chose not to publish the parody. According to the Literary Encyclopedia, The Torrents of Spring was on one level a declaration of literary independence (Anderson had served as something of a mentor to Hemingway), but many scholars also suspect Hemingway wrote the parody to escape from his three-book contract with Boni and Liveright. If that was the case, the plan worked, and Scribner's became Hemingway's publisher for the rest of his life. Still, some reviewers saw the book as a detour in Hemingway's own career, because Torrents of Spring had little in common with the excellent short stories he had published in his first U.S. book, In Our Time. Eyssen S. 146 - 147.. * Eins von 250 Exemplaren, in allen Colophonen der vier Teillieferungen (jeweils den hinteren Umschlag-Innenklappen) numeriert, im ersten Colophon signiert. - Auf kräftiges, handgeschöpftes Bütten gedruckt. Unser Exemplar im handgebundenen Vorzugseinband: Rotes Maroquin auf fünf unechten Bünden, mit schlichter Filetenvergoldung auf den Buchdeckeln, goldgepr. Deckel- u. Rückentiteln u. Kopfgoldschnitt. Das Buch ruht in einer von Roland Meuter gefertigten, farblich passenden Halbmaroquin-Kassette (das Leder teils minimal verblaßt), mit goldgepr. Rückentitel, Rohleinenüberzug u. Velourleder-Innenausstattung. - In jeglicher Hinsicht, vor allem, was Buchgröße, Illustrationen u. Aufwand betrifft, eine wahrlich monumentale Ausgabe, vielleicht die größte buchkünstlerische Huldigung, die Goethes "Faust" jemals zuteil geworden ist. Auch in diesem Werk bilden der leichte Satz aus einer nicht näher benannten Kursiv mit Slevogts Illustrationen eine äußerst harmonische, spielerische Einheit. Mit diesem seinem illustratorischen "Testament" hat Slevogt endgültig - nach den Illustrationen zur "Zauberflöte" - den Höhepunkt seiner Illustrationskunst erreicht. Dabei zeigt er sich auch hier völlig befreit von aller Rücksichtnahme gegenüber traditionellen, buchgestalterischen Forderungen, seine Illustrationen umrahmen als Arabesken und illustrative Girlanden den Text, spielen in die Textblöcke hinein mit Szenendarstellungen, in denen Slevogt wiederum seine "Meisterschaft im Festhalten von Bewegung" beweist, "in denen es darum geht, dramatische Zuspitzung zu fixieren (...) Ein Werk, das immer wieder zum Blättern und Betrachten verlockt, ein 'Bilderbuch' für Erwachsene... (Eyssen). - "Slevogt ließ sich gewiß tief beeindrucken von geschehnisreichen Stoffen. Der Kern seines Werkes, das ins Aquarell, ins Ölgemälde und in die Wandmalerei seine Ausläufer trieb, war die Bilderzählung für's Buch (...) Max Slevogt, der lebenssprühende Illustrator war im Grunde ein Maler, der des literarischen Geschehens (...) bedurfte.       London - The Nonesuch Press 1926 - Bound in cloth with gilt lettering, bevelled edges and unclipped dust wrapper. The dust wrapper is of a smaller size than the book, as is usual. Signed by the author. First edition. Limited edition, number 384 of 1,250. The dustwrapper is designed by Marion V. Dorn. The engraving is by Stephen Gooden. George Augustus Moore (1852 1933) was an Irish novelist, short-story writer, poet, art critic, memoirist and dramatist. As a naturalistic writer, he was amongst the first English-language authors to absorb the lessons of the French realists, and was particularly influenced by the works of mile Zola. His writings influenced James Joyce, according to the literary critic and biographer Richard Ellmann, and, although Moore's work is sometimes seen as outside the mainstream of both Irish and British literature, he is as often regarded as the first great modern Irish novelist. Marion V. Dorn (18961964) was a designer. Stephen Frederick Gooden (18921955) was an engraver. Gooden worked chiefly as a book illustrator, beginning in 1923 with the Nonesuch Press Anacreon. He contributed to twenty works, notably the The Fables of Jean de la Fontaine, and Aesop's Fables. In addition, Gooden designed and engraved more than forty bookplates, including those for Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth, and Princess Margaret, and four for the Royal Library, Windsor Castle. Condition: The binding isfirm. As good a copy as you are likely to see, including the very scarce dustwrapper. Internally the pages are clean and bright with a couple of handling marks. Du hast auch dirigiertechnisch ein Meisterstück vollbracht und in dieser einen, ersten Aufführung gleich den Stil für alle folgenden festgelegt. The author was born in Venezuela, was a mercenary in the Spanish-American War and the 1st Sino-Japanese War, returned home to take part in Venezuela's revolution, and got into trouble with the new Venezuelan government, which forced his exile. He is supposed to have worked with Sandino in Nicaragua, as a cowboy in Arizona and joined in the Alaska gold rush. The events of this book recount his experiences in the 1st World War, when he joined the army of the Ottoman Empire and witnessed firsthand the Armenian genocide. This copy INSCRIBED to another renowned adventurer; Alexander Hamilton Rice, who directed a base hospital in France during WWI, married Titanic survivor Eleanor Widener and as the founder of Harvard's Institute of Geographical Exploration organized 7 successful expeditions into the Amazon country. The inscription reads: "Al Sr. Doctor Alexander Hamilton Rice, atentamente dedicato por su (?) amigo/Rafael de Nogales./New York. Mayo 22/26." (The word before 'amigo' I cannot decipher.) .
