The Secret of the Ages Vols. I-7

ROBERT COLLIER, NY 1926 - Published as The Book of Life in 1925 First edition thus General wear, worn corners/extremities, tanned spines, age-toned pages, few vols. have foxing, hinges "opened," good binding, clean bodies and unmarked texts. The World's Greatest Discovery, "You can do as much as you think you can, But you'll never accomplish more; If you're afriad of yourself, young man, There's little for you in store. For failure comes from the inside first, It's there if we only knew it, And you can win, though you face the worst, If you feel that your going to do it."-Edgar A. Guest. What, in your opinion, is the most significant discovery of this modern age? The finding of Dinosaur eggs on the plains of Mongolia, laid-so scientists assert-some 10,000,000 years ago? The unearthing of the Tomb of Tutankham-Amen, with its matchless speciments of a bygone civilization? From "A Heap of Living" The Reilly & Lee Co. The radio-active time cloth by which Professor Lane of Tufts College estimates the age of the earth at 1,250,000,000 years? Wireless? The Aeroplane? Manmade thunderbolts? No-not any of these. The really significant thing about them is that from all this vast research, from the study of all the bygopne ages, men are for the first time beginning to get an understanding of that "Life Principle" which-some how, some way-was brought to this earth thousands or millions of years ago. They are beginning to get an inkling of the infinite power it puts in their hands-to glimpse the untold possibilities it opens up. This is the greatest discovery of modern times-that every man can call upon this "Life Principle" at will, that it is as much the servant of his mind as was every Aladdin's fabled "genie-of-the-lamp" of old; that he has but to understamd it and work in harmony with it to get from it anything he may need-health or happiness, riches or success. To realize the truth of this, you have but to go back for a moment to the beginning of things. The Purpose of Existence, No one can follow it down through the ages without realizing that the whole purpose of existence is GROWTH. Life is dynamic-not static. It is ever moving forward-not standing still. The one unpardonable sin of nature is to stand still, to stagnate. The Gigantosaurus, that was over a hundred feet long and as big as a house; the Tyrannosaurus, that had the strength of a locomotive and was the last word in frightfulness; the Pterodactyl or Flying Dragon- all the giant monsters of Prehistoric Ages-are gone. They ceased to serve a useful purpose. They did not know how to meet the changing conditions. They stood still-stagnated-while the life around them passed them by DATE PUBLISHED: 1926 EDITION: [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

In 1923, during a journey into the Arabian Peninsula, Cheesman collected over 300 specimens from the Hasa oasis, several of them previously unknown to science. These specimens are currently in the British Museum. He is credited with discovering Cheesman's Gerbil (Gerbillus cheesmani). Cheesman was the first man to map the Arabian coast from the Gulf of Salwa to Uqair. In 1924 he fixed the position of Hofuf and identified the site of ancient Gerrha. He presented his findings to Ibn Sa'ud at his court in Hofuf. He was later given the Gill Memorial Award for this work by the Royal Geographical Society.         Nigger Heaven.

London: Alfred A. Knopf, 1926 - Octavo. Original brown cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Cloth slightly faded along the edges. A beautiful, clean, and fresh copy in the dust jacket. First UK edition, first impression. Originally published in the US in the same year. Van Vechten's novel of the Harlem renaissance has faced criticism for its title, but the author was in fact a supporter of African American equality and a friend of many Harlem Renaissance intellectuals. The text itself explores the issue of racism through the story of a young couple whose love is thwarted by contemporary social attitudes. A stunning copy, rare found in such nice condition.         So this is Jazz

Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, , 1926. Octavo. Original orange cloth with title blocked in black to the spine and to the upper board with pictorial roundel of a jazz band in blue and black. In the textured paper, pictorial dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece and 10 other portraits, notation to the text. Endpapers a little browned, otherwise very good in slightly rubbed jacket, spine darkened and slightly chipped head and tail but remaining attractive. First edition. Considered to be the first American book on Jazz. The author, a former conductor of the Munich Royal Opera and an editor of Musical Courier, attempts to dispel the wider public's fear of Jazz, perhaps relying a little too heavily on Paul Whiteman - "The King of Jazz." Uncommon in jacket, a handsome book, this copy with the striking bookplate of noted California photographer Will Connell to the front pastedown.

One of 900 copies for amis de l'edition in a total first printing of 1053 copies. A very good+ copy with some dark shelf residues to bottom edge.

      - Formato in 16°, copertina in brossura.
