        Makhno et sa juive.

      - Editions EOS, Paris 1926, in-4° Couronne broché. Couverture illustrée et rempliée. 156 pages.

        Anne of Greene Gables

Boston: L.C. Page, and Company, 1926 Later printing (originally published February 1908) of the first book in the author's Avonlea series. Illustrated by Elizabeth R. Withington. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Second edition from / new plates, made in 1925: / the old plates of the original / edition in 1908, being worn / out. With new illustrations. / L. M. Montgomery Macdonald / April / 1926 / [cat illustration]". Bound in the publisher's ribbed light teal cloth, with gilt lettering to the front board and spine, illustration of a woman's profile to the front board, publisher's advertisements at the rear of the text. A very good copy, with wear and light rubbing to the extremities, bright spine, spine cracked between the half-title and the frontispiece, otherwise intact spine, small piece of tape to the rear pastedown. Additionally inscribed with a former owner's provenance note to the front pastedown: "This book, autographed by the / author, was presented in 1948 to / Sister Mary Kathleen, then superintendent / of nurses, St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, / by the author's son, Dr. Stuart / Macdonald, member of the / Staff of Obstetrics and Gynaecology [sic] / St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, Canada. / To Franie / Affectionately / Aunt Amy / Dec. 13, 1977". Overall, a clean and attractive copy with strong provenance. The only signed Anne of Green Gables we have seen. After inscribing the book, the author bequeathed this copy to her son, Dr. Stuart Macdonald, who presented this volume to the nursing superintendent at the Toronto hospital where he worked. In turn, the nurse gave this copy to "Aunt Amy," who chronicled the book's ownership history in her inscription. Aunt Amy gifted this book, and additionally inscribed it, to Franie. Franie passed the book down to the step-mother of the most recent owner. The personal nature of this volume's provenance emphasizes the rareness of a signed copy of this title. The author's inscription relates to Elizabeth Withington's eight illustrated plates, including one frontispiece. The earliest editions of Anne of Green Gables contain illustrations by W. A. J. and M. A. Claus. All three artists were painters working with a variety of mediums, meaning their works had to be copied by printers for mass reproduction. By 1925, the printer's plates of Claus' work had been used to the point that they were no longer producing clear images. Rather than making new plates from the original Claus illustrations, Withington created new original illustrations for the subsequent printings. Although the choice of illustrator was likely made by the publisher, Montgomery's inscription, which is accompanied with a small cat silhouette illustration, implies she was rather fond of Withington's artwork. Anne of Green Gables is a story about a young orphan girl, Anne Shirley, who is sent to live on a farm on Prince Edward Island with a family who had intended to adopt a boy. Montgomery drew much of the novel's setting from her own childhood experiences living with her grandparents on the eastern coast of the island. Like her readers, the author was quite taken with the jovial character she had created and wrote multiple sequels to this first installment of what would become a beloved children's series.. Illus. by Withington, Elizabeth R.. Inscribed by Author. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1926 - , vi, 133pp., sewn PAPERBACK, chipped at top and bottom of spine, and curved along bottom section due to slack shelving, a few substantive pencil notations in margins on a few pages, horizontal offsetting marks or similar printing anomaly on half-title and title, discount stamp on title page, Collection de physique mathématique, fascicule 1. Contents : La dynamique des quanta. - L’optique des quanta. - Statistique des quanta. / The de Broglie story is myth and history in one. Younger son of an old aristocratic family, with years of productivity lost to the first World War, then the almost sudden discovery of wave mechanics which he himself dated to his three notes of 1923, of which his 1924 thesis was an exanded version (Abragam, p.29). The great jury confronted with the thesis (Cartan, Langevin, Perrin, Mauguin) could not fully appreciate the discovery and it was sent to Einstein for evaluation. Schroedinger added the decisive steps in 1926. Or as Steven Weinberg re-tells it: "De Broglie guessed that the electron can be regarded as some sort of wave" and "he did not invent any sort of dynamical wave equation." And, despite the high expectations, "he did virtually nothing else of scientific importance"; it was "Schrödinger in Vienna who in 1925-26 transformed de Broglie's rather vague ideas about electron waves into a precise and coherent mathematical formalism" (Dreams of a Final Theory, pp. 69-70). The book is, in any case, a monument. . [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Gute Expl. [Photo Album]: United States Travels in 1926 and 1927 including photographs of Charles Lindbergh's Paris Flight

United States, Paris. 1926-1927. Octavo. Sting-tied black leather measuring 7" x 9" with "Kodak Library" stamped in gilt on the spine. Contained within the photo album are 233 sepia toned photographs of various sizes affixed to stiff black paper with captions. Heavily rubbed boards, tiny tears, and some abrasions, else very good. A collection of photographs from trips across the United States from 1926-1927 starting in Southern California. The album documents the journey which included sand dunes, alligator farms, Hopi Indian runners, and the skeleton of a horse left to parish in the desert. The company traveled extensively with stops in Arizona, New Mexico, Mississippi, Tennessee, Virginia, Alabama, New York, Philadelphia, and also Niagara Falls and Paris. Photographs of iconic American landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell are present along with family shots and landscapes. Mixed throughout the album are 28 photographs of various pilots and aircraft from the year of the race to fly over the Atlantic for the $25,000 Orteig Prize. Included in these are Clarence D. Chamberlin and his team, the "French flying ace," Rene Fonck and the wreckage from his crash landing where two of his team died; the "Miss America of Aviation," Ruth Elder; and the infamous Charles Lindbergh. The Lindbergh photos follow his iconic journey in The Spirit of St. Louis traveling from Long Island to Paris becoming the first person to make a solo flight and spend one day in both North America and Europe. There is an action shot of the plane captioned, "Lindy leaving for Paris," and one of the crowd of people in the streets cheering his arrival. An excellent portrait of a year of American history full of iconography and the thrill of early aviation celebrities. .

        Luigi of Catanzaro.

London: Privately printed by E. Archer, 1926 - Octavo. Original cream wrappers printed in black. Wrappers rubbed, tanned, and spotted. Title leaf unopened. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. One of 100 copies privately printed and signed by the author on the limitation leaf. This story was also intended for inclusion in The Doomington Wanderer in 1934, but was suppressed before publication, though there exists at least one proof copy that includes it. Many of Golding's books have themes of Jewish identity and integration, and this story is no exception, centred around a heavenly debate over the canonisation of a saint who turns out to have Jewish ancestry. Though this item is listed in the mystery bibliography Queen's Quorum, it is not in fact a mystery story, and its inclusion in that volume is inexplicable. Rare.
