Savonarola A Biography in Dramatic Episodes plus handwritten letters

New York: Robert M. McBride, 1926. First Edition First Printing . Hardcover. Very Good/Good-. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. The unique correspondence that is laid in is a set of letter to Maude Merrill who had appeared in the Peter Pan stage production. They are typewritten by Van Wyck in the course of October, 1930. He has signed them added handwritten notes and post scripts. They concern Van Wyck's life and domestic situation at the time, but there are also passages where Van Wyck rhapsodizes about their earlier relationship (for example -" Peter Pan and Wendy - Dear God what a long time that was and how poignantly it affects me even yet"). There is also a Passionate hand written love letter to "My Beloved" (although a later sentence contains "I have missed my Wendy! My love..."). This stated first edition is clean, tight, basically square and unmarked in an about good dust jacket that looks better in Brodart. It is lightly rubbed at the edges and front board has a slight bow. The dust jacket has edge wear with several small chips and the spine is darkened. It has gray end papers and 263 clear pages with some minimal foxing in a one-quarter binding with maroon cloth covered boards with titles on a paste down on the spine. The boards are covered in brown cloth. The signatures are on the correspondence.

Aus meiner Kindheit und Jugendzeit [Signed; Jack Palance's Copy] [From My Childhood and Youth; Memoirs of My Childhood and Youth]

      C. H. Beck'sche [C. H. Beck], 1926, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good, Dust Jacket Condition: very good, First editionA Very Good copy of the first German edition, first printing (spine ends modestly pushed, minor toning to the board extremities, a few tiny spots to the rear board, prior owner's ), in a Very Good toned dust jacket (chipping to the spine ends and panel corners, a small loss to the spine a bit below the center, small spot to front panel tape repairs on the verso (inside) to the spine, front panel's upper edge, upper rear flap turn), SIGNED BY ALBERT SCHWEITZER on the title page; Albert Schweitzer was all of Physician, Philosopher, medical missionary, organ virtuoso, Bach authority, New Testament Scholar, author, and winner of the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize. In presenting the Prize to Schweitzer, Gunnar Jahn, Chairman of the Nobel Committee, spoke extensively on Albert Schweitzer's youth and noted that "I have dwelt so long on Albert Schweitzer's youth because I believe that it explains all of his later life and work. Already at that time a flame burned within him, a flame which he has kept alight throughout his entire life and which has become the inspirational source for all his activity." This understanding of Schweitzer reveals the importance of the book herein described. Having a notable Provence, this copy belonged to the actor Jack Palance and carries the bookplate from the 2006 sale of this Personal Property loosely laid in.In our experience, signed copies of the book are quite scarce indeed. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY ALBERT SCHWEITZER.

Autograph letter signed "Z. Kodály" to Associated Music Publishers in New York

      - "With Bartók, [Kodály] was one of the creators of a new Hungarian art music based on folk sources, and he laid the foundation for the development of a broadbased and musically literate culture With the success of the Psalmus hungaricus Kodály had made a fresh start, and his career gained further momentum with the premières of the Singspiel Háry János (Budapest, 16 October 1926) and of the six-movement suite drawn from it (Barcelona, 24 March 1927). These works consolidated Kodály’s stature the world over: Toscanini and Mengelberg, Ansermet and Furtwängler were among the first to include them in their programmes. " László E sze et al in Grove onlineUniversal published Kodály's arrangement for cello and piano of Bach's 3 Chorale Preludes in 1924; we have not located an arrangement by Kodály for string orchestra of any of Bach's chorales published by AMP. Folio, ca. 292 x 185 mm. Dated Budapest, June 27, [1947?]. In blue ink. On a folded sheet advertising the Jägerhaus Hotel and Restaurant in Karlsbad. With the recipient's name and New York address in Kodály's autograph to address panel on verso."Universal Edition Vienna, ask[!] me to confirm personally the arrangement about my Bach Chorale you wish publish[!] in a string orchestra arrangement paying the sum of $50.00[?]. Agreed, and you send me a copy of the score and each separ[at]e part. Yours very truly.         THE OLD SERGEANT'S STORY, WINNING THE WEST FROM THE INDIANS AND BAD MEN IN 1870-1876.

Frederick H. Hitchcock, 1926. - First edition. Cloth, 220pp., 8 plates. The author was a recognized Medal of Honor recipient; a participant in many campaigns against Comanche and Kiowa hostiles with Col. Ranald Mackenzie's 4th Cavalry. In 1919 & 1920, he published several pamphlets, now rare, about his Indian-fighting experiences on the southern plains. John B. Charlton, the "Old Sergeant", a comrade of Carter's throughout their years with the 4th Cavalry, read Carter's stories and wrote to Carter in 1921. This began a year and a half of frequent, lengthy correspondence between Carter and Charlton, that ended with Charlton's death in March, 1922. Through the detailed, warm correspondence between the two, Carter presents an insightful, first-hand account of the legendary campaigns of Mackenzie's 4th Cavalry from 1871 through 1874. "Mackenzie's Raid" into Mexico; the capture of outlaw "Red" McLaughlin by Charlton and, famous scout, Jack Stillwell; and the 4th Cavalry battles against the Comanches and Kiowas at McClellan's Creek, Palo Duro Canyon, and the north fork of the Red River are among the many incidents recorded. Of special interest is Charlton's account of the killing of Setank, by Charlton, when Setank, Big Tree, and Satanta were being transported to Ft. Richardson, Texas to stand trial for the killing of 7 teamsters of the Warren Wagon Train when they were attacked by Indians east of Ft. Richardson. In addition, Charlton tells Carter about his experience in Colorado, as an independent freight hauler, when, under escort of Major Thornburgh, they were attacked by Ute Indians and kept under siege for 6 days before being rescued. Charlton was hauling freight to the White River Agency in 1879, when the Utes killed Agent Meeker, captured Meeker's wife and daughter, and wreaked havoc throughout the region. Great history, and a warm and occasionally touching reflection by two "old soldiers". Indian wars historian, John M. Carroll wrote that "Carter's enormously important writings on frontier military history will be recognized as source material for all future historians." An important, first-hand record. Previous owners bookplate on front pastedown, else a fine, bright copy in protective slipcase. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Der Kommandant von Kalymnos. Ein Mysterium aus dem Rokoko der Levante. Autograph Letter, signed Manuskript gedruckt. [With:] "Der verirrte böse Hund" [Typescript]

Venedig [i.e., Vienna: printed for the author by Paul Kaltschmidt], 1926. One of 100 copies, this being no. 79. With two illustrations after drawings by the author. 60 pp., [1] f. (imprint). 1 vols. 8vo. Original lavender cloth, front board titled in gilt. Near fine copy, inscribed by the author on the flyleaf "Herrn Otto S. Kraus gewidmet vom Verfasser. Fritz Herzmanovsky-Orlando. Meran Juni 1952". With 4-Page Typescript Story, 'Der verirrte böse Hund' Rare novella, issued in an edition of just one hundred copies by the Viennese-born author, dramatist, and artist Friedrich (Fritz) von Herzmanovsky-Orlando (1877-1954), long resident in the South Tirol region. With the four-page single-spaced typescript of his comic dramatic sketch entitled "Der verirrte böse Hund", with several manuscript corrections. The piece, written late in Herzmanovsky-Orlando's career, recalls an incident when the author encountered the intransigency of the royal Bavarian bureaucracy while attempting to report a runaway dog in Munich. The story is rich in southern German dialects and comic echoes of a vanished world. The story was published in Sämtliche Werke. Band V. Zwischen Prosa und Drama, edited by Susanna Kirschl-Goldberg (Vienna: Reklam, 1986); the editor notes that the transmission of this story is fragmentary. The Herzmanovsky-Orlando archives in Austria preserve another corrected typescript and its carbon, as well as a partial draft. The present typescript, erratically typed, largely follows the text in the Austrian archive. The 1958 catalogue of a Munich gallery exhibition of Herzmanovsky-Orlando's drawings is also loosely inserted.

Volume with foot of spine softened, small sticker ghost top ffep, ink inscription to front pastedown, else about fine. DJ with very tiny chips at flap folds and head of spine, small chips at foot of spine with rubbing and darkening and two closed tears (1-1/2" & 2") at foot of spine folds. "Copyright / CANADA, 1926 / BY McCLELLAND & STEWART, LIMITED / TORONTO." and "THE HUNTER-ROSE CO. LIMITED / TORONTO" on the copyright page, with no indication of additional printings (the second Canadian edition states "Second Printing, December, 1926"). Ads page [v], showing "BY THE SAME AUTHOR" titles up to only "EMILY CLIMBS" (pub. 1925), which immediately preceded "The Blue Castle". Thus, an early state of the Canadian edition text, bound in a later state casing (first edition binding lacked the castle illustration and was bound in grey cloth) with a later state dust jacket - assume 1929-33 (pastedown inscription dated 1933). Also of note is an early state binding spine treatment, with the volume's spine lacking the "A Love Story of the North Woods" statement (added to the spine of later McClelland & Stewart printings) which is however, printed onto the DJ spine. Published simultaneously with the Stokes U.S. edition in 1926, THE BLUE CASTLE is the only one of Montgomery's novels not set wholly or in part on Prince Edward Island and her only novel for adults.
