Seven Pillars of Wisdom, a triumph

[London: Privately printed by Manning Pike and C.J. Hodgson,], 1926. Quarto (252 × 187 mm). Original dark green full morocco by Roger de Coverly & Sons, title gilt to the spine, five bands with five small gilt dots equally spaced, double fillet panels to the compartments, similar panels to the boards with star and drawer-handle roundels to the corners, centre-tool of a lozenge with writhen strapwork, top edge gilt, the others uncut, single fillet gilt edge-roll and to the turn-ins, pictorial endpapers after Kennington. Housed in a green quarter morocco book-style drop-back box, pale grey cloth, title gilt to the spine, pale grey cloth chemise. 66 plates printed by Whittingham & Griggs, including frontispiece portrait of Feisal by Augustus John, many coloured or tinted, 4 of them double-page, by Eric Kennington, William Roberts, Augustus John, William Nicholson, Paul Nash and others, 4 folding colour-printed maps, that is 2 maps duplicated, rather than the 3 called for by O'Brien, laid down on linen, 58 illustrations in text, one coloured, by Roberts, Nash, Kennington, Blair Hughes-Stanton, Gertrude Hermes and others. Historiated initials by Edward Wadsworth printed in red and black. Very light shelf-wear, head-cap just slightly pulled, frontispiece map a touch rolled at the fore-edge, internally very clean and fresh, only the occasional leaf with a pale hint of foxing, overall an extremely bright copy in a very attractive binding. One of the Cranwell or "Subscriber's" edition of 211 copies, this one of 170 "complete copies", inscribed by Lawrence on p. XIX "Complete copy. 1.XII.26 TES", with one manuscript correction to the illustration list, a "K" identifying Kennington rather than Roberts as the artist responsible for "The gad-fly". This copy is in the usual state, with page XV mispaginated as VIII and as often without the two Paul Nash illustrations called for on pages 92 and 208; nor does it have the Blair Hughes-Stanton wood engraving illustrating the dedicatory poem found in only five copies. However, it does include the "Prickly Pear" plate, not called for in the list of illustrations. Superb copy of Lawrence's sumptuously-produced account of his rôle in the Arab Revolt, his "big book". In a letter to George Bernard Shaw he described it as an effort to combine 'record of fact' and 'work of art', "to make history an imaginative thing" (Karachi, 7/5/28), as Lawrence James, in his ODNB biography of him puts it, Lawrence created, " a personal, emotional narrative of the Arab revolt in which [he] reveals how by sheer willpower he made history. It was a testimony to his vision and persistence and a fulfilment of his desire to write an epic which might stand comparison in scale and linguistic elegance with his beloved Morte d'Arthur and C. M. Doughty's Arabia Deserta. Subtitled 'A triumph', its climax is the Arab liberation of Damascus, a victory which successfully concludes a gruelling campaign and vindicates Lawrence's faith in the Arabs. In a way Seven Pillars is a sort of Pilgrim's Progress, with Lawrence as Christian, a figure sustained by his faith in the Arabs, successively overcoming physical and moral obstacles".

Der Kommandant von Kalymnos. Ein Mysterium aus dem Rokoko der Levante. Autograph Letter, signed Manuskript gedruckt. [With:] "Der verirrte böse Hund" [Typescript]

Venedig [i.e., Vienna: printed for the author by Paul Kaltschmidt], 1926 - Rare novella, issued in an edition of just one hundred copies by the Viennese-born author, dramatist, and artist Friedrich (Fritz) von Herzmanovsky-Orlando (1877-1954), long resident in the South Tirol region. With the four-page single-spaced typescript of his comic dramatic sketch entitled "Der verirrte böse Hund", with several manuscript corrections. The piece, written late in Herzmanovsky-Orlando's career, recalls an incident when the author encountered the intransigency of the royal Bavarian bureaucracy while attempting to report a runaway dog in Munich. The story is rich in southern German dialects and comic echoes of a vanished world. The story was published in Sämtliche Werke. Band V. Zwischen Prosa und Drama, edited by Susanna Kirschl-Goldberg (Vienna: Reklam, 1986); the editor notes that the transmission of this story is fragmentary. The Herzmanovsky-Orlando archives in Austria preserve another corrected typescript and its carbon, as well as a partial draft. The present typescript, erratically typed, largely follows the text in the Austrian archive. The 1958 catalogue of a Munich gallery exhibition of Herzmanovsky-Orlando's drawings is also loosely inserted One of 100 copies, this being no. 79. 8vo. With two illustrations after drawings by the author. 60 pp., [1] f. (imprint). Original lavender cloth, front board titled in gilt. Near fine copy, inscribed by the author on the flyleaf "Herrn Otto S. Kraus gewidmet vom Verfasser. Fritz Herzmanovsky- Orlando. Meran Juni 1952" [Attributes: Hard Cover]

His artistic career spanned from the 1900s through the 1940s, during which time his work was exhibited throughout North America and Great Britain. In 1940 he was asked to become a resident artist at the Banff Centre, then known as the Banff School of Fine Arts, where he played an important role in the development of their visual arts program.         Fairyland of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite

1926. first edition. One of 1,000 Copies Signed by Ida Rentoul Outhwaite[OUTHWAITE, Ida Rentoul, illustrator]. Fairyland of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Verses by Annie R. Rentoul. Stories by Grenbry Outhwaite and Annie R. Rentoul. Melbourne: Ramsay Publishing, 1926.Edition-de-Luxe. Limited to 1,000 numbered copies, signed by the artist (this copy being number 281). Large folio (14 5/8 x 10 3/4 inches; 371 x 273 mm.). [4], 166 pp. Nineteen mounted color plates, with descriptive tissue guards, and thirty-two mounted black and white plates (all included in pagination).Original blue cloth decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Top edge gilt, others serrated. Pictorial endpapers. The black and white line drawings on pp. 3, 4, 8, 21, 37 138, 154 & 160 have been neatly hand colored. The mounted black and white plate on p. 111 has also been neatly heightened in color. There is some wear at the top and the bottom of the spine which has been neatly strengthened. There is a small stain (1/2 x 3/8 inch) on the front cover affection the "I" and the "T" of Outhwaite. This is a very good copy of an extremely scarce book.Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, born in 1888 is Australia's most famous children's book illustrator and is among the best woman illustrators of the first half of the twentieth century. Described as being just as petite and dainty as her fairies, Outhwaite was the first Australian children?'s book illustrator to achieve world fame. She loved to paint fairies that often played with the native kangaroos, koalas and kookaburras that populated her beloved bush land.In 1923, after a trip to Europe, Outhwaite returned to Australia to work on the long-awaited sequel to Elves and Fairies, Fairyland. Unfortunately, Fairyland did not sell as well as hoped, partly because it was more expensive. This was also Outhwaite?'s fifth colored book and her public already knew what to expect. In short, it was competing with her other books. She credits Hans Christian Anderson for introducing her to Fairyland but, in truth, it was her bush land countryside that caught her imagination. There is also an undeniable influence by Palmer Cox's Brownies. Other artists that she admired were Phil May, Aubrey Beardsley, Daniel Vierge and Gordone Browne citing her passion for black and white art.?"It was when I was eleven that someone gave me a bottle of Indian ink and Gillot nibs and I discovered the bliss of working in black and white, which always has been and always will be my favourite medium. There is something magical in seeing what you can do, what texture and tone and colour you can produce merely with a pen point and a bottle of ink; to find out that wind can be suggested with a few long sweeping lines, and a quiet moony sky by a few straight ones round the outline of a halfpenny.?"Most certainly, as a child, Outhwaite must have been exposed to the color work of Walter Crane, Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway. But as an adult in the publishing field, there is no doubt that the work of Edmund Dulac, Arthur Rackham and Kay Nielsen caught her attention. Marcie Muir & Robert Holden. The Fairy World of Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, p. 162; Marcie Muir. A Bibliography of Australian Children's Books. p. 644.

Television. Very fine copy in very fine dust jacket

London: Pitman, 1926. First edition. First Book on Television in English: Superb CopyDinsdale, Alfred. Television: Seeing by wireless. 8vo. 62pp. London: W. S. Caines for Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, 1926. 186 x 125 mm. Original printed paper boards, pictorial dust-jacket. Very fine copy. Boxed.First Edition of the first book in English on television. Dinsdale discusses the technical challenges faced by early experimenters (Jan van Szczepanik, Boris Rosing, Denoys von Kihaly and others), but focuses primarily on the work of the Scottish engineer John Logie Baird (1888-1946), the first person to produce televised pictures of objects in motion. In February 1924 Baird produced the first television image in outline, and in April 1925 he transmitted the first pictures between two televisions. By the following October Baird had succeeded in transmitting images with gradations of light and shade, and on January 27, 1926, he successfully transmitted recognizable human faces between two rooms by television. Of Baird's early experiments, Dinsdale writes: "Baird's weird apparatus-old bicycle sprockets, biscuit tins, cardboard discs and bullseye lenses, all tied together with sealing wax and string-failed to impress those who were accustomed to the shining brass and exquisite mechanism of the instrument maker. The importance of the demonstration was, however, realized by the scientific world . . ." (p. 49). Although he did not succeed in producing a viable system of television, Baird paved the way for future technical developments. Television reached a state of technical feasibility in 1931, and the first high-definition broadcasting system was launched in London in 1936 by the BBC.The copy we are offering is in nearly pristine condition, and is the finest copy we have seen in our four decades in business. The Richard Green copy, with a tape repair on the back panel of the dust-jacket and some minor rubbing, sold at Christie's on June 17, 2008 for $16,250.00. Spine and corners somewhat rubbed, covers bowing slightly, and a split between the Prologue and first page, else a very good copy of notable provenance. Announcement from the Press laid in.
