        Chad Gadya Had Gadya

Bnei Betzalel, Jerusalem, Eretz Israel 1926 - 10 color illustrations after Raban with free verse rendering of the traditional Passover song below, musical notes on last leaves. followed by publisher's ad. Perhaps the finest of Raban's illustrated works. Raban was a major Jewish artist born in Poland. He studied in Munich and Brussels and was heavily influenced by the jugendstil (art nouveau) movement of that era. He moved to Israel in 1912 and joined Boris Schatz's Bezalel School. 8vo, original color-pictorial wrappers, Ze'ev Raban (born Wolf Rawicki, 1890-1970), studied sculpture and the decorative arts in Europe, first in his hometown and later in Munich, Paris, and Brussels. At the Kunstgewerbechule in Munich, Raban learned design, including object and jewelry design, in Paris, he specialized in sculpture; and in Brussels, he was influenced by Symbolism and earned his living through architectural decoration projects. Raban reached Eretz-Israel in 1912 and joined the staff of the Bezalel School in Jerusalem, at the invitation of its director, Boris Schatz. In 1914, he was appointed director of the brass and copper repousse department. Raban viewed himself as a pioneer in the renewal of Hebrew art in Eretz-Israel and was actively involved in the forming of the ethos of the growing nation. He encouraged tourism through his poster art, illustrated Hebrew primers, and endowed decorative and functional objects with Jewish/Hebrew content. Raban underwent a metamorphosis in art from the western art of his studies to an incorporation of Eastern techniques and motifs, and the use of indigent flora and fauna. An important stage in that transformation was the adoption of the Yemenite as a model for the Biblical figure. Raban's acquaintance had been with a European Symbolism that was international, equivocal, and often personal. But in Erez Israel, Raban created a "Hebrew Symbolism" that was national and carried a clear message, although he still preferred the ideal and the archetypal over realistic. He developed a visual lexicon of motifs based on Jewish designs and topics, and to these he added his own Hebrew calligraphic script and other decorative elements, to form what was to become the "Bezalel style".         Den Gr?nne Hat

Copenhagen - Gyldendalske Boghandel, Nordisk Forlag, 1926 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A clean, bright, Danish translation of The Green Hat by Michael Arlen. Bound in half leather with gilt lettering and marbled paper-covered boards. Michael Arlen, 1895 1956, whose original name was Dikran Kouyoumdjian, was an Armenian essayist, short story writer, novelist, playwright, and scriptwriter, who had his greatest successes in the 1920s while living and writing in England. Although Arlen is most famous for his satirical romances set in English smart society, he also wrote gothic horror and psychological thrillers. The book that catapulted author Michael Arlen to fame and fortune in the 1920s, The Green Hat is a tale of the lost generation, those members of postwar fashionable London society. His characters are cynical and disillusioned, with a sharp, biting wit. Although sophisticated, the book is also a sentimental romance set in London and Paris. Condition: The binding is tight and firm. There is slight wear to the extremities, including slight bumping. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright, with some marks to the first few pages. Overall the condition is very good..

Included are the Poems in five volumes, the Glossary, Notes & Indexes in one volume, and the Letters in four volumes. Some sets were issued in standard cloth, while others (like this one) were issued at extra cost in this handsome morocco binding. All ten volumes are in fine condition (just a few small rubs), with many of the leaves still unopened.~Tipped in at the beginning of the first volume are several holograph items in the hand of Robert Ainslie (1766-1838), who was a friend, traveling companion and correspondent of Burns and the author of several books including IN THE LAND OF BURNS (in fact, about 16 letters to Ainslie are included in the Letters volumes of this set). Two of the holograph items, in Ainslie's hand, are a poem celebrating the anniversary of Burns's birthday and an "Extract" about the birthday celebration in Edinburgh. The other three tipped-in items are letters (written and signed by Ainslie) addressed to John Childs -- who was a printer in Bungay, Suffolk who made a name for himself publishing inexpensive but quality literature "for the millions." One of the letters thanks Childs for his "Tam o' Shanter," while the other two (dated January 1824) involve arrangements for the celebration of Burns's birthday. (Burns had died in 1796, but his 65th birthday would have been coming up on January 25th in 1824.) The items are all folded, and two of the letters have some tears at the folds, and chips due to the original sealing-wax.
