New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good dust jacket. Octavo. Blue/green cloth as issued with title stamped in blind on the front cover and in gold on the spine; a very bright copy in Very Good condition or better; light rubbing at the corners and spine ends; top corner of the back board is mildly bumped; the stamping on the spine remains bright; Scribner's seal on the copyright page; type on pages 38, 248 and page number 90 remains strong and unbattered; a few leaves have creases from having the corners turned down; vertical crease running the length of the front free endpaper; a few leaves at the beginning have been roughly opened; otherwise a clean bright copy in uncommon dust jacket; dust jacket is separated at the rear joint as well as at the bottom of the spine; all pieces are held in place in a mylar cover though there is evidence of a few pieces of tape on the verso; piece missing at the top of the spine affecting the title (a facsimile has been laid in to give the book a better shelf presence); flap folds have some closed tears; the lips on the front panel illustration are battered indicating it came a bit later in the run. A nice copy in scarce dust jacket of Fitzgerald's third collection of short stories. While Fitzgerald is most remembered for his novels, in particular The Great Gatsby, he made his living by his stories which were published in the popular magazines of the day -- Saturday Evening Post, The Smart Set, American Mercury, and others. Scholars have argued that Fitzgerald used the short stories to work out themes in service of the novels that followed. While his short stories were typically far more popular than his novels, it was in his longer fiction that Fitzgerald felt he was practicing his art. All the Sad Young Men is the collection that followed The Great Gatsby which at its publication was a critical and commercial failure but is now thought to be Fitzgerald's most important work—indeed some have gone so far to call it the ?"great American novel.?" All the Sad Young Men is a masterful collection including ?"Absolution,?" often thought to be a false start to Gatsby as well as often anthologized ?"Winter Dreams.?"

Über das Wasserstoffspektrum vom Standpunkt der neuen Quantenmechanik.

Julius Springer, Berlin 1926 - First edition, in original printed wrappers, of Pauli’s important derivation of the hydrogen spectrum from the new quantum mechanics, providing the first validation of Heisenberg’s theory. As Pauli explains in the abstract: "It is shown that the Balmer terms of an atom with a single electron are yielded correctly by the new quantum mechanics and that the difficulties which arose in the old theory disappear in the new theory." Heisenberg’s epochal ‘Über quantentheoretische Umdeutung kinematischer und mechanischer Beziehungen’ had appeared just a few months earlier, in September 1925. "The first nontrivial and physically important application of quantum mechanics was made soon afterwards by Wolfgang Pauli [in the present paper], who calculated the stationary energy values of the hydrogen atom by the matrix method and found complete agreement with Bohr’s 1913 formulas. From this moment, there was no longer any doubt about the correctness of the theory among physicists" (Max Born, Physics in My Generation (1956), p. 181)."Now the time had come to test the new formalism on the hydrogen atom. Dirac had solved a two-dimensional hydrogen model [‘Quantum mechanics and a preliminary investigation of the hydrogen atom,’ Proc. Roy. Soc.,Vol. 110 (1926)]. But the real thing apparently was too difficult even for Born. Heisenberg wrote in his contribution to the Memorial Volume for Pauli: ‘At that time I myself was somewhat unhappy that I did not succeed in deriving even the simple hydrogen atom.’ Liberated from his work on the ‘Quantentheorie’ [Handbuch der Physik, Vol. 23, pp. 1-278] Pauli had gone into this problem at full pelt, and on 17 January 1926 he submitted for publication his paper ‘On the hydrogen spectrum from the standpoint of the new quantum mechanics.’ Already on 3 November 1925 Heisenberg had written to Pauli: ‘I probably don’t have to tell you how much I rejoiced at your new theory of hydrogen and how much I admire that you have made out this theory so far,’ and he closed the letter with ‘hearty congratulations for your theory’" (C. P. Enz, No Time to be Brief (2002), pp. 134-5). B.L. van der Waerden, Sources of Quantum Mechanics, no. 16. Pp. 336-363 in Zeitschrift für Physik, 36. Band, 5 Heft, 27 March, 1926. 8vo (229 x 157 mm), pp. 325-400. Original printed wrappers. Very fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

L'ITALIANO Diretto da Leo Longanesi. Rivista settimanale della gente fascista.

      Bologna,, 1926-1930.. - 2 (28 gen.) - 3 (11 feb,) - 8 (3 giu.) - 12/13 (7 ott.) - 14/15 (15 nov.) // "Mancano": nn. 4- 5- 6 -7 - 9 - 10 - 11 - 16/17. - 1927 (Anno II): n. 1/2 (15 febbr.) - 3/4 (21 mar.) - 7/8/9 (30 giu.) - 10/11 (31 lugl.) - 12/13 (30 sett.) - 14/15 (8 nov.) - 16/17 con il Lunario (ultimo num. 20 dic.) // "Manca" n. 5/6. - 1928 (Anno III): n. 1/2 (15 febbr.) - 3/4/5 (15 apr.) - 6/7 (28 magg.) - 8/9 (28 giu.) - 10/11 (24 lugl.) - 12/13 (15 ott.) - 14/15 (30 nov.) - 16/17 (31 dic.). Completo. - 1929 (Anno IV): n. 1 (31 genn.) - 2/3/4 (19 mar.) - 5/6 (17 apr.) - 7/8 (12 magg.) - 9/10 (20 giu.) - 11/12 (1 sett.) - 13/14 (30 sett.) - 15/16 (30 ott.) - 17/18 (ultimo num. 15 dic.). Completo. - 1930 (anno V): n. 1 (9 genn.) - 2/3 (28 febb.) - 4 (15 mar.) - 5/6 (17 apr.) - 7/8 (15 magg.) - 9/10 (giu.) - 11/12 (31 lugl.) - 13 (15 ago.) - 14/15 (15 sett.) - 16/17 (28 ott.) - 18/19 (28 nov.) - 20/21 (30 dic.). Completo. Complessivam. esempl. ben conservato. .

A Girl from China (Soumay Tcheng)

Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York 1926 - A very good copy of the presumed first hard cover edition (no explicit edition or printing statement), lacking a dust-jacket. Previous bookshop stamp to front endpaper, with "The Rent of this Book is 10c for 7 Days / 5c per day overdue" stamped to front free endpaper; else the text is wholly unmarked, pristine, and the binding and jacket are bright and fresh in appearance. (This is NOT an ex-library copy.) Wear and fraying at the extremities of the boards, as well as at the crown and base of the spine. Gilt lettering on the front board is still quite bright, while the gilt on the spine has dulled to illegibility. All in all a sharp copy of this rare Van Vorst title.         The Great Gatsby

London: Chatto & Windus. (1926). First. First English edition. Dark blue cloth gilt, the primary binding (there were two later bindings: tan and light blue, thought to be remainder bindings). Miniscule tear at the crown and a bit of rubbing on the boards, still a very good or better copy lacking the very rare dustwrapper (at the time of publication of the bibliography Bruccoli had not seen one, but we subsequently located and sold it to him). The much rarer first English edition of an American classic with, according to various sources, as few as 1500 to 3000 copies printed versus 20,870 of the American edition. Fitzgerald's perception of the lack of support he received from his English publishers was the source of great consternation to him. According to one source: "On 15 June 1925, William Collins, Fitzgerald's English publisher for This Side of Paradise and The Beautiful and Damned, turned down The Great Gatsby, declaring that "to publish The Great Gatsby would be to reduce the number of his readers rather than to increase them." A rarity. Connolly 100. .

To Jesse Lasky, in New York City: "Enclosed is a letter I received from Percival Wren, the author of BEAU GESTE. I am also sending a copy to Mr. Zukor. I do this not because of any reference to me but rather because of what he says about yourself and Mr. Zukor as American Producers. You once said.that it was your ambition to produce a picture which could be released on the same day and date in every principal city in the world. It is naturally my ambition to direct this picture. What we all did with Beau Geste Proves that we Americans can produce a picture which will appeal equally to every Anglo-Saxon mind in the world."; Paramount Pictures released "Beau Geste" on August 1, 1927, directed by Herbert Brenon. The cast included Ronald Colman, Neil Hamilton, Ralph Forbes and Alice Joyce. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
