        THE SHIP OF ISHTAR .

New York, London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1926 - Octavo, pp. [1-2] [i-iv] v-vi 1 [2] 3-326 [327-328: blank] [note: final leaf is a blank], original red-brown cloth, front and spine panels stamped in yellow. First edition. Merritt's second book. Although Wentz notes "several printings" and G. Gordon Dewey in FANTASY ADVERTISER, December 1948 notes five "printings," there was but a single printing. ". Putnam had been unable to sell a pitifully small edition of a thousand copies of THE SHIP OF ISHTAR in book form and the sheets for the last three hundred copies were finally purchased by Munsey, and were bound and distributed to readers of ARGOSY- ALL-STORY Magazine." - Sam Moskowitz, Explorers of the Infinite (Cleveland: World, 1963), p. 203. This book is found in numerous variant bindings, no priority established, this copy bound in red-brown mesh weave cloth with yellow stamping and top edge not stained. ". the most fully realized of all his fantasies." - Cawthorn and Moorcock, Fantasy: The 100 Best Books 36. "The most romantic of Merritt's works. Very uneven as a novel. Sometimes fascinating, sometimes dull; pretentious, yet with a knowing wink of humor now and then; finely imagined, if not always executed." - Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction 1157. Anatomy of Wonder (1976) 3-42. Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, pp. 130-31. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 3-246. Currey, p. 365 (binding C). Bottom rear corner mildly bruised, else a fine copy in nearly fine pictorial dust jacket with a bit of wear along top and bottom edges, mainly at head and tail of spine panel and corner tips, some rubbing along folds, and light dust soiling to rear panel. A very attractive example of this scarce jacket. (#149291) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

      - FIRST EDITIONS OF ALL THREE PAPERS DEVELOPING MAX BORN'S REVOLUTIONARY STATISTICAL INTERPRETATION OF QUANTUM MECHANICS, also known as the probability interpretation of the wave function, or the probabilistic interpretation of the Schrodinger wave function. Born argues - an argument that would lead directly to Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle -- that quantum mechanics "could be understood as a probability without any causal explanation" (Wikipedia), prompting Einstein to reply in a letter to Born that "He [God] does not throw dice". Born came to his decisive breakthrough in understanding wave function when, "in a paper on the scattering of electrons from atoms, [he] observed that the most obvious interpretation of the wave function is that it represents the probability of finding the electron at a given location. More precisely, he added almost off-handedly in a footnote, its square represents probability, and this observation is now called the Born Rule" (Peacock, The Quantum Revolution, 58). In his "precise and very detailed" second paper, "Quantenmechanik der Stossvorgange," Born"states that matrix mechanics started out from the assumption that it is impossible in principle to exactly describe a process in space and time? In wave mechanics Schrödinger had tried to construct 'wave groups' [now called wave packets], which have small dimensions in all directions and obviously are supposed to represent the moving particle'. Instead, he proposes to try a third interpretation and to test its usefulness on scattering processes" (Brandt, The Harvest of the Century, 170). Born summarizes his interpretation with "The motion of a particle follows probability laws but the probability propagates according to the laws of causality." The third paper, "Das Adiabatenprinzip in der Quantenmechanik," is Born's further development on the statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics; here introducing the concept of quantum tunneling. Born won the Nobel prize in 1954 for "his fundamental research in quantum mechanics, especially for the statistical interpretation of the wave function" (Nobel Committee). ALSO INCLUDED: In Volume 37, O. Klein, "Quantentheorie und fünfdimensionale Relativitätstheorie" ZfP 37 (1926) pp. 895 [Kline's part of Klein-Gordon equation] + Bothe, Walther (1926). "Über die Kopplung zwischen elementaren Strahlungsvorgängen." ZfP 37, 547-567. ("On the coupling between elementary radiation processes"). In Volume 40, "Zur Deutung der Molekülspektren " by Friedrich Hund (ZfP 40 pp. 742-764, 1927) introduces the concept of quantum tunneling. "Über nicht kombinierende Terme in der neueren Quantentheorie" by Eugene Wigner (ZfP 40 pp. 492-500 and 883-892, 1926) introduced Hamiltonian invariance and its implications for quantum transitions. and "Der Comptoneffekt nach der Schrödingerschen Theorie" by Walter Gordon (ZfP 40 pp. 117, 1926) presents Gordon's part of Klein-Gordon equation. CONDITION & DETAILS: 4to. (9.25 x 6.25 inches; 231 x 156mm). Three volumes uniformly bound in a bluish, dark grey buckram; gilt-lettered at the spine; tightly and very solidly bound.         Fantaisies Oceanographiques

Paris: F. Dumas, 1926. Small stain affects corner margin of one plate, some wear of the cloth backstrip of the folding case, yet a fine set.. Set of twenty-five pochoir plates and decorated title page measuring 375 x 275 mm., an excellent set in the original folding portfolio case. A rare and exotic album of vivid French art deco undersea fantasies. These skilfully printed pochoir designs based are based on tropical corals, anemones, plankton and jellyfish, combined into enticing patterns for possible use in fabric and wallpaper designs. The designs are remarkable for their use of the stencil overlay process of pochoir printing to create remarkable atmosphere and depth of field, combining subdued background colouration with vivid aquamarines and turquoise highlighting to catch the eye and entrance the viewer. The portfolio was limited to 250 copies and is beautifully preserved in the original folding case with cloth ties and elegant lettering stencilled to the front board. Fantaisies Oceanographiques is a mysterious and alluring celebration of Parisian pochoir printmaking at its finest. This set is signed by the artist alongside a florid dedication by the publisher.

        Torres-García. 36 reproductions de pintures i dibuxos. 1926

Barcelona, Monografies d'Art. TWO WORLDS MONTHLY

Two Worlds Publishing, New York 1926 - 238 x 168 mm (9 3/8 x 6 5/8"). The journal's first 11 issues. Edited by Samuel Roth. Original printed paper wrappers. Isolated pencilled marginalia. Slocum & Cahoon C-68. Five spines with minor chip at tail, short splits to head of six joints, covers of last issue detached and chipped around the edges, covers a little soiled, with a couple of short fore-edge tears, occasional corner creases or short marginal tears, but the leaves clean and fresh, and the fragile volumes otherwise well preserved. These 11 issues contain bowdlerized (and unauthorized) reprints of 13 episodes of Joyce's "Ulysses," which had been banned in the United States on grounds of obscenity. This bold piracy certainly brought Roth to the attention of the literary world: according to Slocum & Cahoon, "This unauthorized serialization of Ulysses resulted in considerable public indignation and provoked the 'International Protest' signed by 167 artists and writers and printed in transition I (April 1927)." Roth had planned to publish 14 installments in 12 issues; however, the 12th issue never appeared individually, though that section did appear in a later two-volume bound edition. Joyce sought and obtained an injunction against Roth, but by that time "Two Worlds" had ceased publication. The author sued for damages, claiming that an American edition of "Ulysses" could make $500,000. The New York Times reported that Roth countered, "The circulation of The Two Worlds Magazine has decreased very appreciably since the announcement of the articles by Mr. Joyce." In addition to "Ulysses," the magazine contains writings by T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Djuna Barnes, Anatole France, D. H. Lawrence, and Octave Mirbeau's scandalous novel, "Diary of a Chambermaid." Complete sets of the individual issues are very hard to find, especially in good condition. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

2 ms. Postkarten mit eigenh. U.

[Wien], 4.X. und 4.XII.1926. - Zusammen 2 SS. [4.XII.1926]. - Die Unterschrift in Bleistift.

        The Land of Mist.

London; Hutchinson. [1926], 1926. First Edition. 8vo. Publisher's dark green cloth titled and decorated in light green, light edgewear, slight scuffing. Very good indeed. In a very good, bright and attractive dustwrapper, laid on to grey card at some point to forestall further deterioration and unfortunately lacking a significant corner of the upper rear panel. An attractive copy in the very scarce dustwrapper, albeit an example that has seen some handling and has some edgewear. Old paper label affixed to tail of spine panel. Internally clean, ownership to front pastedown, ownership stamp to title page and an admonition against dog-earing ink stamped to the bottom of the contents page. An attractive survival.

        The Sun Also Rises

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926 First edition, firs printing, first issue with "stoppped" for "stopped" on page 181. One of 5,090. Publisher's black cloth, with gold title labels to the front board and spine, Cleon vignette illustration to the title page. Near fine, with a hint of rubbing to the extremities, faint toning to the spine, label on the spine lightly lifting to one corner, an otherwise fresh binding, bright and clean interior. A tight copy, much nicer than usual. Hanneman A6a. The Sun Also Rises is Hemingway's second novel and is considered his most important work. The text tells the story of American and British expatriates who travel to the Festival of San Fermínin in Pamplona, Spain. The plot, which is based on Hemingway's own experience at the Festival of San Fermínin with literary expatriates then living in Paris, unites Hemingway's main interests that continue to appear in his subsequent novels. Additionally, The Sun Also Rises utilizes the Iceberg Theory so evident in much of Hemingway's writing, where the true essence of the story is not expressly said in the plot but rather is meant to be inferred. Hemingway's experiences in Pamplona inspired his interest and vast knowledge of bullfighting, which he showcased in his non-fiction work Death in the Afternoon (1932).. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

Rollenportrait des Opensängers Fritz Soot. Orig.-Photo.

Um 1926. - Vintage print. Silbergelatineabzug. 22,8 x 17 cm. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
