"He won't kiss strangers. I've trained him not to"

Probably published in The New Yorker magazine, 1926. The original pen and wash drawing, signed, of a cartoon, captioned in pencil, showing two ladies seated on a park bench with a small dog between them, to which the caption refers. Image size 8 x 9 1/4 inches, matted and framed to 14 3/4 x 18 3/4 inches. 1 vols. Fine condition. With the label on the back of the frame of M. Knoedler & Co., pre-eminent New York art gallery. 1 vols. Original Helen Hokinson Cartoon. Helen Elna Hokinson (1893-1949), was the foremost woman cartoonist of her generation--perhaps of any generation. She sold her first drawing in 1925 to the five-month-old New Yorker Magazine, and remained a highly popular contributor until her untimely death in a plane crash in 1949. "Her work", the editors noted, "was the product of loving observation and a boundless delight in all absurdity, none more than that she found in herself...". Dogs, and their owners, were a favorite subject, and this is an early example.

        The British Gazette

His Majesty's Stationary Office, May 5 - May 13, 1926., 39. 8 issues. A complete set of the British Gazette. All in very good, folded condition, with some light toning. Overall an exceptionally good set, housedin in a vintage folding cloth box with gilt titles to spine (rubbed and marked to spine panel). During the the General Strike of 1926, Churchill edited the paper, which was initiated to combat the closing-down of the newspaper offices. It was published from the Daily Telegraph building in Fleet Street, where it was also printed by a volunteer staff. The British Gazette ran for eight issues between 5 May and 13 May excluding Sunday 9 May. Its circulation figures are of interest, since they will probably never be equalled for relative increase. The figures are: 232,000; 507,000; 655,000; 836,000; 1,801,400; and 2,209,000. The sales for the last issue are not known, but they were well in excess of the 2,000,000 mark. It used to be thought that only one article could be ascribed to Churchill. It is now assumed that most of the paper was written by him. In the final issue, the article The Birth and Life of the British Gazette closes with the most Churchillian turn of phrase : 'It becomes a memory; but it remains a monument'.

International Exhibition of Modern Art: Arranged by the Societe Anonyme for the Brooklyn Museum

Societe Anonyme--Museum of Modern Art, New York 1926 - A WONDERFUL ASSOCIATION COPY: INSCRIBED BY "THE SOCIETE ANONYME" TO HUGO SCHEIBER, IMPORTANT HUNGARIAN MODERNIST PAINTER FEATURED IN THE CATALOGUE (pg. 53). A solid copy to boot of this seminal --and very uncommon-- catalogue of the November-December 1926 exhibition at The Brooklyn Museum. One of the great early documents of the Modern art movement, the 1926 Brooklyn show featured many of the leading lights of this nascent movement. From Man Ray to Picabia, Suzanne Duchamp to Franz Marc, Kurt Schwitters to Moholy-Nagy, the show had an inclusive, International feel to it and the catalogue, reflecting this, is indexed by nationality. Brilliantly designed --and illustrated-- by Katherine Dreier and the remarkable Russian artist Constantin Aladjalov (both of whom are featured in the show as well). This copy shows a bit of inevitable wear and very light soiling at the preliminaries. Half of pg. 51-52 (the "Holland" section, following Mondrian) has been neatly excised, clearly representing this copy's biggest flaw. Bu the binding is very strong, the text clean and bright, the Aladjalov-illustrated boards solid and very attractive. In spite of the half-page missing, the copy --in this bookseller's eyes-- still comfortably merits a VG. Quarto, 117 pgs. plus strikingly beautiful gallery ads (Rome, Berlin, New York, Bauhaus, etc.) at the rear. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Peking, 28. XII. 1926.. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. Mit eh. adr. Kuvert.. - Gelocht (minimale Buchstabenverluste).

Zur Quantenmechanik der Stossvorgange; Quantenmechanik der Stossvorgange; Das Adiabatenprinzip in der Quantenmechanik

Berlin: Julius Springer, 1926. FIRST EDITIONS of all three papers developing Max Born?s statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics. Born?s revolutionary work abandoned the notion of causality in quantum mechanics, leading directly to Heisenberg?s Uncertainty Principle and prompting Einstein?s famous objection that God ?does not play dice.? Noble Prize to Max Born awarded in 1954 ?for his fundamental research in quantum mechanics, especially for the statistical interpretation of the wave function.?. ?At the end of June 1926, Max Born submitted for publication a paper entitled ?Quantum Mechanics of Collision Phenomena.? He thought he had broken the Gordian knot by finding an interpretation that adjudicated some credit to both contenders [Heisenberg?s matrix mechanics and Schrodinger?s wave mechanics]. Schrodinger?s wave function was indeed unobservable, as Heisenberg maintained, but the magnitude of its square... was observable- it could be related to the probability of finding an electron. However, and this was the key, no absolute determination of an electron?s position was possible, only relative probabilities of detecting it in one position or another.?Although Born received the Nobel Prize thirty years later for the paper?s contents, Schrodinger and Einstein were no more pleased by this formulation than they had been by Heisenberg?s. It abandoned the notion of causality, the cherished link for them between cause and effect. One of Einstein?s most famous quotes is contained in a December 1926 letter on the subject to Born. He simply would not accept the notion that a probability measurement of an electron?s position was the best one could do: ?Quantum mechanics is very impressive. But an inner voice tells me that it is not yet the real thing. The theory produces a good deal but hardly brings us closer to the secrets of the Old One. I am at all events that He does not play dice.???By October, Heisenberg realized the potential of Born?s probabilistic interpretation... Four months later, Heisenberg wrote a fourteen-page letter to Pauli that contained all the basic elements of what came to be the uncertainty principle, holding that the more precise the measurement of the momentum of a particle, the less precise the measurement of position and vice versa.??Causality had been the basis for the laws of nature for centuries... Born?s statistical interpretation of Schrodinger?s wave function- an essential element of quantum mechanics- was causailty?s death knell.?Nancy Thorndike Greenspan, The End of the Certain World: The Life and Science of Max Born. Gino Segrè, Faust in Copenhagen: A Struggle for the Soul of Physics.Zur Quantenmechanik der Stossvorgange [Quantum Mechanics of Collision Phenomena]. ?Statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics.         Gatsby Le Magnifique (The Great Gatsby)

Paris: Simon Kra, 1926 Rare first French edition (#367 of 415 total) of Fitzgerald's masterpiece, and the first of his books to be translated into any language. A lovely, near fine copy with faint browning but clearly unread. Photographic frontis portrait of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Laid in is an 8-page catalogue "Les Editions du Sagittaire" listing Kra's other titles. This copy states "Edition originale" (First Edition) on the front panel. Copies are sometime offered with 2nd through 8th edition stated, with a suggestion that this edition number is "fictitious" and that these are really true firsts; I have seen no evidence for this contention, but would be interested to learn more about this. In any event, this copy states "Edition originale" as one would expect.

"For 'Doug' Jr" Superb, large portrait of the great John Barrymore (1882-1942) by the well-known Hollywood photographer of the the silent era, Melbourne Spurr, inscribed lower right to Douglas Fairbanks, Jr, (whose signature is on the verso), "For 'Doug' Jr with sincerest good wishes from his friend and contemporary John Barrymore 1926." A superb association between two Hollywood legends. Fairbanks' (1909 - 2000) idol, in fact, was none other than John Barrymore.

        The Land Of Mist

New York, George H. Doran Company 1926., 1926. First US Edition. 8vo. Near fine in publisher's green cloth with titles in black to spine and front board. Some residue remains of a white paper label that appears to have been fixed to the lower edge of the front board, aprt from this residue and a slight bump to the upper right hand corner the book is exceptionally clean and lovely. Slight spotting to the page edges, the book is clad in a lovely example of the fragile dustwrapper, wear to extremities and chipping to the top right hand corner of the front panel and to the base of the spine, otherwise unfaded and bright, some slight toning to the green and cream rear panel and spine but the virtues far outweigh the shortcomings. Scarce in the wrapper and even scarcer in a wrapper that doesn't look like it heaved itself down the Amazon wracked with yellow fever and babbling about dinosaurs. The third story in the series featuring Professor George Challenger, one of the most memorable characters in speculative fiction. Doyle's other great character beside Sherlock Holmes, Challenger had already starred in two novels 'The Lost World' (1912), and 'The Poison Belt' (1913) and would later appear in 'When the World Screamed' and 'The Disintegration Machine'; Brilliant, witty, insufferable, and blessed with a booming voice and a huge black beard, Challenger is an eccentric and able champion of the human race. Given the author's preoccupation with Spritism at this time, 'The Land of Mist' turned out to be a psychic adventure. Green and Gibson; A Bibliography of Arthur Conan Doyle.
