        Poems of Shelley

1926. History is a Cyclic Poem Written by Time Upon the Memories of Man"A Superb Example of Ramage's Remarkably Delicate, Careful, and Elaborate Gilt Work[RAMAGE, binder]. SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe. Poems of Shelley. Selected and Arranged by Stopford A. Brooke. London: Macmillan and Co., 1926. Golden Treasury Series. Sixteenmo (5 13/16 x 3 7/8 inches; 148 x 97 mm.). lxvi, [2], 340 pp. Title-page with vignette of Field Place - Shelley's birth place. Beautifully bound ca. 1926 by Ramage of London (stamp-signed in gilt on lower turn-in). Full green crushed levant morocco, covers paneled in gilt surrounding a very intricate design in gilt, spine with five raised bands, decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt board-edges, wide decorative gilt turn-ins, cream watered silk liners and end-leaves, all edges gilt. Neat early ink presentation (dated 1927) on front blank. A superb example of a later Ramage binding.Born in London in 1836, John Ramage served an apprenticeship with John Wright, then went to Paris, where he was able to work with the distinguished Marcellin Lortic (1822-1892), who opened his shop on the Rue St. Honoré in 1840. In 1860 Ramage purchased the binding business of Alexander Banks, Jr., in Edinburgh, then returned three years later to London, where he was in business at various locations into the 20th century. Though the range of their designs is broad, Ramage bindings are celebrated for their remarkably delicate, careful, and elaborate gilt work.Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was one of the major English Romantic poets, and is regarded by some as among the finest lyric, as well as epic, poets in the English language. A radical in his poetry as well as in his political and social views, Shelley did not see fame during his lifetime, but recognition for his poetry grew steadily following his death. Shelley was a key member of a close circle of visionary poets and writers that included Lord Byron; Leigh Hunt; Thomas Love Peacock; and his own second wife, Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein.Shelley is perhaps best known for such classic poems as Ozymandias, Ode to the West Wind, To a Skylark, Music, When Soft Voices Die, The Cloud and The Masque of Anarchy. His other major works include a groundbreaking verse drama The Cenci (1819) and long, visionary poems such as Queen Mab (later reworked as The Daemon of the World), Alastor, The Revolt of Islam, Adonaïs, Prometheus Unbound (1820) - widely considered to be his masterpiece - Hellas: A Lyrical Drama (1821), and his final, unfinished work, The Triumph of Life (1822).

        The Theory of the Gene

Yale University Press, New Haven 1926 - Octavo, xvi, 343 pages with 155 illustrations. Cloth a little sunned, marked and scuffed, with slight wear to the extremities; edges lightly marked; a very good copy. With the contemporary ownership details of 'I.F. Phipps, Cornell University . . . April 1926', and the later name-stamp of G.M.E. Mayo, University of Adelaide. While still a student at the University of Adelaide, Phipps had been appointed to head the plant breeding section at the Waite Institute; he was 'sent to the US to train under Cornell geneticists R.A. Emerson, Barbara McClintock, and George Beadle from 1925 to 1928' (David Steffes: 'The "Eco-Worldview" of Charles Birch', 2008). Some lightly pencilled marginal notes (confined mainly to the 'General Conclusions' chapter) appear to be by Phipps. The author, famous for his experimental research with the fruit fly and establishment of the chromosome theory of heredity, won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1933.         Complete Works of Abraham Lincoln

Harrogate, TN: Lincoln Memorial University, [1926]. Hardcover. Complete 12-volume set. Small 4to. Black cloth with gilt spine lettering and decorations. xxxi, 365pp; xv, 368pp; xlviii, 356pp; xvii, 387pp; xxxiii, 371pp; xix, 361pp; lvi, 310pp; liv, 334pp; lxiv, 304pp; xxviii, 356pp; xvi, 380pp; 373pp. Frontispieces wqith captioned tissue guards, illustrations (some foldouts). Very good. Mild rubbing to spine gilt of all volumes, else uniformly tight, clean and near fine. Not the first edition of this 1905 classic-- but arguably the best! Being the later "New and Enlarged Edition," which LMU published in different bindings that include a numbered green cloth edition and a leatherette edition. Interestingly, the Boy Rangers of America also published one of these later editions -- and while "Lincoln Memorial University" appears in gilt at the foot of all 12 spines of this set, the bottom of each title page cites Lincoln Memorial University on volumes 1 through 8 only and cites Boy Rangers of America in volumes 9 through 12. This is not a mixed set, however, as all match perfectly and the last four volumes are indistinguishable from the first eight volumes except for the citation at bottom of the title page -- merely a bibliographical mystery. In addition, this set contains one extra-illustration: Tipped into the preliminary leaves of the first volume is an outstanding head-and-shoulders steel-engraved portrait of Lincoln (image size 4" X 5¼"), perhaps the frontispiece from a Civil War-era Lincoln book, since the name of publisher "D. Appleton & Co." appears in fine print on the blank lower margin. An outstanding, dramatic example of the engraver's art, wonderfully nuanced and three-dimensional, as engraved by A.B. Hall of New York (as noted in fine print immediately below image). A superb set of a title most often found only in ex-library form. MONAGHAN 1471 note.

DEFENDU (Scientific Self-Defense) The Official Text Book for the Shanghai Muncipal Police, Hongkong Police and Singapore Police

Shanghai: North-China Daily News & Herald Ltd, 1926. 1st Edition. Oatmeal colored cloth binding with brown stamping to the spine & front board. Binding faded, and shows evidence of damping at some point in the past. Prior owner pencil inscription ["Chas Hamilton / c/o A. P. Co / Shanghai / China [underscore]"] to front paste-down. A Gd+ copy.. 171, [1 (blank)] pp. Profusely illustrated, with photographic illustrations by A. J. P. Coghlan. 8vo. ~ 10" x 6-1/2" This Fairbairn's seminal manual on close quarters combat. The book was the first to present Fairbairn’s system of fighting, a system that became legendary among practitioners of self-defense and battlefield skills. Through Defendu and his subsequent books (including All-In Fighting [1942] & Shooting to Live [1942, co-authored with Eric Sykes]) as well as his years spent training members of the Shanghai Municipal Police in the 1920s, W. E. Fairbairn had more influence on the evolution of practical hand-to-hand combat than any other individual in modern history. The work is a manual teaching self protection by any means necessary, against any conceivable opponent. With numerous diagrams and photos, this revolutionary work illustrates the most effective moves in close quarter combat, including techniques for defending against various holds, dealing with assailants armed with guns or knives, applying truly effective holds and throws, using the club and walking stick for self defense, and other types of close-in fighting. After enlisting in the British Royal Marines at age 16, Fairbairn spent the years between 1903 and 1907 stationed in Japan and Korea, carefully studying every form of martial art he encountered. He then accepted a position with the Shanghai Municipal Police department, which was struggling against the organized criminals and violent gangsters of early 20th C. Shanghai. Tasked with training the underfunded department, Fairbairn wove together his military training, mastery of Eastern martial arts, and everything he had learned from personal experience in street fighting into this new style of gutter fighting called Defendu. In the years spent on the streets of Shanghai, Fairbairn allegedly survived over 600 physical altercations, which left his body scarred from knife and bullet wounds. Upon leaving Shanghai, he accepted a job training elite agents for the British Secret Service. To this day Fairbairn retains his legendary status, having been credited with inventing the SWAT team, riot police, the bullet proof vest, and the Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife. He was the subject of a book published in England in 2006, The Legend of W. E. Fairbairn, Gentleman and Warrior: The Shanghai Years.  Another book concerning his time in Shanghai, The World's First SWAT Team: W. E. Fairbairn and the Shanghai Municipal Police Reserve Unit, was published in 2012.  (In 1926, the same year Defendu was published, the Shanghai police had fired upon demonstrators, which resulted in strikes and unrest. Fairbairn was charged with forming a specialized unit to deal with riots and armed encounters; the resulting Reserve Unit became the prototype for future SWAT teams.) The first edition of this work, as here, is quite rare, with RBH showing no copies coming to the market in recent, and the not-so-recent, past.  OCLC locates only 3 holdings, two in the British Library and one in the Library of the U.S. Marine Corps.

        The Sun Also Rises.

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1926 - First edition, first issue of the first printing, with the misprint ("stoppped") on page 181 line 26. Octavo, original black cloth. In near fine condition, with a touch of rubbing to the extremities. An exceptional example. The Sun Also Rises was published by Scribner's in 1926, and a year later in the United Kingdom by Jonathan Cape under the title Fiesta. Though it initially received mixed reviews, it is now "recognized as Hemingway's greatest work" (Meyers, 1985). The fictional plot depicts a love story between war-wounded and impotent Jake Barnes and the promiscuous divorcée Lady Brett Ashley, but the novel is a roman à clef; the characters are based on real people and the action is based on real events. Hemingway proposes that the "Lost Generation," considered to have been decadent, dissolute and irretrievably damaged by World War I, was resilient and strong. Naturally, themes of love, death, renewal in nature, and the nature of masculinity are heavily investigated. For example, the characters engage in bull-fighting, which is presented as an idealized drama: The matador faces death and, in so doing, creates a moment of existential nothingness, broken when he vanquishes the possibility of death by killing the bull (Stoltzfus, 2005). The Sun Also Rises is seen as an iconic modernist novel for future generations (Mellow, 1992), although it has been emphasized that Hemingway was not philosophically a modernist (Reynolds, 1990). "The Sun Also Rises is Hemingway's masterpiece--one of them, anyway--and no matter how many times you've read it or how you feel about the manners and morals of the characters, you won't be able to resist its spell. This is a classic that really does live up to its reputation" (David Laskin). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Turbott Wolfe

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company. Near Fine in Good dj. (c.1926). First American Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [extremely light bumping to a couple of corners, no other significant wear, vintage price sticker and bookseller's label (from the famous San Francisco department store The White House) on rear pastedown; jacket has shallow chipping along bottom edge (both panels and spine), also a bit at the upper corners, and the rear flap, which had been detached, has been expertly re-attached by a professional paper conservator]. Plomer's remarkable debut novel, published when he was just 23, deals with "the experiences of an over-sensitive Englishman in Africa -- Africa with its burning sun, luxuriant vegetation, its superstition, and the cruelty and stupidity of its white invaders," with its title character described by one latter-day critic as "a bizarre combination of Gatsby and Prufrock (and a possible genius)." When the book was reprinted a decade ago, Nadine Gordimer declared in a new introduction that it is "an inexplicable lapse on the part of literary scholars and critics that 'Turbott Wolfe' is not recognised as a pyrotechnic presence in the canon of renegade colonialist literature along with Conrad.” It caused a furor in South Africa upon its publication (by Leonard and Virginia Woolf's Hogarth Press), for its frank depiction of interracial love, and for daring to criticize the country's whites and their supposed benevolence toward the black population. Although born in South Africa, Plomer spent most of his childhood in England before returning with his family to the country (a British dominion until 1931), where he eventually became involved (with Laurens van der Post and Roy Campbell) in the short-lived magazine "Voorslag" ("Whiplash"), through which they intended to agitate in favor of racial equality. Local outrage over that publication and "Turbott Wolfe" itself led to Plomer's departure from South Africa in 1926; after several years in Japan, he returned to England, where his friendship with the Woolfs facilitated his acceptance into the British literary establishment. Although he wrote relatively little fiction other than short stories after 1934, he was a prolific reviewer, poet and essayist, and had a good deal of influence as the chief reader for publisher Jonathan Cape. He also collaborated (as librettist on several works) with composer Benjamin Britten, and published two autobiographies. The American edition of this landmark novel is much less common than the original Hogarth Press issue, and boasts a colorful dust jacket designed by Winold Reiss, a German-born American artist and graphic designer whose work showed the influence of Native American art and culture. [PLEASE NOTE that the rear jacket flap has been reattached by a professional paper conservator.] [This item is featured in ReadInk's E-Catalog 3.1, which can be perused in full at our website.         Iz istorii kampanii 1914 goda na russkom fronte. Nachalo voiny i operatsii v Vostochnoi Prussii [The history of the 1914 campaign on the Russian front. The beginning of the war and the operation in Eastern Prussia].

Prague: Plamia 1926 - Large octavo (25.5 x 18 cm). Original printed wrappers; X, 436 pp. 14 maps and schemes on separate coated paper. A very good, uncut and unopened copy; light soil to wrappers and spine strip and a few nicks to creases. One of the earliest and most detailed accounts of the Russian invasion of East Prussia following the declaration of war with Germany in 1914. General Lieutenant Golovin commanded numerous regiments during WWI; in 1919 he attempted to join the Kolchak White government in Siberia, but finding the latter in disarray he returned to Paris, where he became well known as a military historian and tactician. After the publication of this initial work on World War I, Golovin continued to study the war both from the perspective of Russian generals and through the memoirs of German and Austrian military leaders, and three further volumes appeared in Paris in 1930, 1936 and 1940 respectively. In the present volume, Golovin describes the outbreak of war, Russia's military position, as well as the first operations in Eastern Prussia. The extensive appendix reproduces a series of official orders as well as fourteen charts and strategic maps, loosely inserted on better paper stock. Savine 06239. Rare, especially with the complete set of cards. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Le nom

Liege: A la Lampe d'Aladdin, 1926. Original edition. Copy #2 inscribed “ respectueux hommage, quels meilleurs procédés pour enchanter le pčre que celui d'aimer ses enfants. Max Jacob '39" and with an original drawing by Jacob pasted in as frontispiece. Entire edition 395: 1 unique; 20 copies on Japon numbered 2-21 (as this); 40 numbered on Madagascar; 300 numbered on Vergé; 35 H.C. Edition rinted by Artisans Imprimeurs, F. Lefčvre, Paris. (5" x 7") Original wrappers, glassine, card slipcase. Very fine, unopened. “Painter René Rimbert mentioned in a letter to Jacob that if his expected child were to be a girl, he would name her Saskia after Rembrandts’s young wife. In his answer Jacob pointed out that Saskia is not a Christian name and that it is important not to subject a child to lifelong ridicule. This exchange of letters gave him the impetus to write the charming story.” (P.188 Black & Green). The story concerns a girl who is named Saskia much against her mother’s wishes. The inscription reflects Jacob’s intention of writing a playful parable for a young person “What better processes to delight the father than to love his children.” Jacob’s influence on modern French poetry was profound, and his modernist lyrical verse is still widely read. Encyclopedia Britannica notes of Jacob: [he] “played a decisive role in the new directions of modern poetry during the early part of the 20th century. His “novels,” mainly epistolary, are exercises in verbal mimicry, reproducing every nuance in the conversation of the petitbourgeois, of whom he was a sardonic but affectionate observer [as in Le Nom]. He influenced many of his contemporaries and toward the end of his life was surrounded by a devoted group of younger and older artists.” Ref: online Encyclopedia Britannica: http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/298950/MaxJacob; Black, Moishe & Maria Green (Ed and trans). “Hesitant Fire: Selected Prose of Max Jacob” U of Nebraska Press, 1991.
