Privately printed, [1926]., 1926. First edition. 8vo. Purple cloth, gold stamping on front cover and spine, viii, 215 pp., frontis. [photograph of the author's father], preface, illustrated, plates, portraits, folding map bound-in at rear of book, index. BTB 184 says, "This worthwhile account of the Big Bend region during the 19th century is especially valuable because one of Shipman's major sources was her pioneer father, of whom she writes: 'To my father, Captain Pat Dolan, I am especially indebted. He has lived on the Texas frontier for seventy-five years and with remarkable clearness of mind recalls the stirring events of the days gone by.' She also quotes extensively from other pioneers and transients in the region, such as John L. Bullis, commander of Indian Scouts under Mackenzie; A. J. Fairmore and P. Bougad on the El Paso Salt War; Mexican outlaw Victor Ochoa; and Texas Ranger T. T. Cook. The work contains chapters on the early mail routes, the boundary commission, the camel experiment and transportation, the military posts, freighting, civil affairs, Indian Campaigns, the El Paso Salt War, Texas Ranger campaigns, ranching, outlaws, mining, and Mexican revolutionary activities after the turn of the century. This is followed by a section of sketches of early pioneer and ranching families." Six Guns 2006 says, "Scarce." "In a chapter entitled 'Law West of the Pecos' the author deals with the Texas Rangers and lawlessness. In another chapter there is mention of the Lincoln County War, Billy the Kid, John Wesley Hardin, John Selman, and other gunmen of the Southwest." Former owner's inked name and address on the front pastedown sheet, else a very good square copy. A fine account of the early Anglo settlement of the Big Bend region.

Bye-Bye to BOWD Being a Dinner Given By The Members of the B.G.S. To celebrate The Leave-Taking of my Lord The Bishop of Nouveau-Croix. On the occasion of his Pilgrimage to Rome MCMXXVI.

London: Self-published., 1926. First edition. Paperback. Very Good. A large single sheet folded into 4. This was the menu to celebrate Edward Bouverie Hoyton ( BOWD) winning the Prix de Rome in 1926. The members of the B.G.S. (Bassett-Gray Society ) The cover is designed by Eric Fraser, who must have been 24 years old. (?'Nouveau-Croix?' translates as New Cross , this is where Goldsmiths Art College is based.) On reverse are the signatures of some of the well-wishers of the B.G.S who also attended these ?'Bibbings?'. They include Bouverie Hoyton, Paul Drury, William Morgan, Charles Thompson, S.W. Hayter, Henry Bassett, Graham Sutherland, Eric Fraser, Edmund Sullivan, Stanley Anderson, F.Marriott, Malcolm Osborne, Percy Buckmann, Cecil Notley, Clive Gardiner, Alfred Drury, (Paul Drury?'s father who was a sculptor), and Milner Gray. On the inside is the menu, and a is a list of ?'toasts?'. Loosely inserted, printed on hand made laid paper is yet another invite from ?'St.Bassett?' and ?'St. Gray?'. The menu is lightly foxed and dusty, the paper is a little worn. There is a previous owners (?) name on top margin. The separate invitation is clean and in very good condition. Scarce. (Only thirty three members-see details below, so the printing number would have been very small) Jolyon Drury has kindly sent us his book which I can highly recommend. ( Revelation to Revolution. The Legacy of Samuel Palmer.Drury and the Goldsmiths School in the 20th Century . Written and published by Jolyon Drury). All the extracts below are from his book. He explains in detail about the Milner Grey and Bassett-Gray Studio. Milner Gray first entered Goldsmiths in 1915, but due to the First World War he took time out and worked with the Royal Engineers in the camouflage section, returning to Goldsmiths Art College in 1919. Basset, like Gray, also returned from the war. By the time Drury and Sutherland had arrived at Goldsmith?'s, Gray and Bassett had set up their Bassett-Gray Studio. Working as an advertising and commercial art studio, with their offices in Imperial Buildings, Ludgate Circus, Gray and Bassett , being ex Goldsmiths students, needing young talented artists, got Goldsmiths students on their books. ?'Gray set out the principals of an association of essentially independent artists who, whilst working within the umbrella of Bassett-Gray, were free to develop their own specialisms. This philosophy survived through the development of the practice into The Industrial Design Partnership in 1935, to evolve into The Design Research Unit (DRU), which still survives to this day. It was this freedom of the association that attracted so many of the top designers and artists of the day.?'. ?'Milner Gray?'s mature vision of a group practice understood the value of social as well as industrious activity in team building both for his clients and supporters as well, as his associates. From 1924to 1929 there were annual dinners that were very carefully planned and choreographed to be seen to be different from anything else in the fledgling advertising industry.?' ?'The dinner was always held at ?'Ye Olde Dr. Butlers?'s Head Masons Yard in the city.?' These were called ?'Bibbings?'. ?'1926 celebrated Bouverie-Hoyton winning the Prix de Rome and Drury (Paul) election as ARE; the dinner was an altogether bigger affair. The menu was designed by Eric Fraser with the theme of Bouverie, nick ?-named Bowd as Durer?'s ?'Nemesis?' with Patrons drawn on the left and members drawn of the studio on the right . Thirty-three sat down to dinner on the 24th of September and ?'everyone?' was there; Alfred Drury RA, Malcolm Osborne RE,(to become President of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers and Engravers in 1938),Amor Fenn, (the then Head Master of Goldsmiths) , Frederic Marriott, (the recently retired Head master after thirty years?' service), Clive Gardener (the up and coming star), Edmund (Old Sully)

Mathematical Investigations in the Theory of Value and Prices

1926 - FISHER, Irving. Mathematical Investigations in the Theory of Value and Prices. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1926. Octavo, original navy cloth. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6000.Photo-engraved later printing of Irving Fisher’s groundbreaking doctoral dissertation at Yale, presentation/association copy, with numerous diagrams for the design of a hydraulic mechanism demonstrating equilibrium prices in a multi-market economy, inscribed to a famous economist: “To Mr. O. Gressens with the compliments of Irving Fisher. February, 1927.”While a graduate student at Yale, Fisher “studied mathematics under Josiah Willard Gibbs and political economy with William Graham Sumner. When the time came for a doctoral dissertation, Sumner suggested he combine the two fields, and this was how Fisher came to write one of the earliest works of mathematical economics by an American. The dissertation was published in 1892 in the Transactions of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences and rapidly won him an international reputation… Fisher’s economic research was marked above all by an ideal of quantification. Political economy, as the discipline had traditionally been known, underwent an important theoretical change in the 1870s and 1880s. The new neoclassical theory identified value with utility, or more precisely with the utility of the last increment of a product consumed. Because utility was defined ‘at the margin,’ this increment could be regarded mathematically as a derivative. That is, the new marginal utility theory permitted the calculus to enter economics as the fundamental basis of theory. This was why Sumner could recommend that Fisher join his study of political economy to that of mathematics. He relied for his dissertation mainly on books by the British economist William Stanley Jevons and by two Germans, Rudolf Auspitz and Richard Lieben” (ANB). Although Fisher was unaware of Walras’s Éléments dÉconomie politique pure (1874) prior to this thesis, he acknowledged the priority of that work on equations of general equilibrium in his preface, as well as the importance of Edgeworth’s Mathematical Psychics on the subject of utility surfaces. It is generally agreed that “although only a student, Fisher had independently developed a theory of general economic equilibrium that was identical to part of Walras’s and included the concept of indifference surface, one of the fundamental bases of modern economic theory” (IESS V:477).In his dissertation, Fisher delineates the machine he constructed, a “hydraulic-mechanical analogue model of a general equilibrium system, replete with cisterns, valves, levers, balances and camps. Thus could he display physically how a shock to demand or supply in one of ten interrelated markets altered prices and quantities in all markets and changes the incomes and consumption bundles on the various consumers. The model is described in detail in the book; unfortunately both the original model and a second one constructed in 1925 have been lost to posterity” (The New Palgrave II). Fisher continued at Yale as a distinguished and popular professor until his retirement in 1935. His “impatience and opportunity” theory on interest was introduced in The Rate of Interest (1907), later revised and enlarged by him in The Theory of Interest (1930). Other major works include: The Purchasing Power of Money (1911), and the monumental The Making of Index Numbers (1922). Joseph Schumpeter “predicted in 1948 that Irving Fisher’s ‘name will stand in history principally as this country’s greatest scientific economist” (ANB). The first edition of this work was published in the Transactions of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1892 and subsequently went out of print. This photo-engraved reprint edition was published in 1925 in respond to demand; this is the second printing of that edition. This presentation/association copy is inscribed to statistician/economist Otto [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

      - FIRST EDITIONS OF ALL THREE PAPERS DEVELOPING MAX BORN'S REVOLUTIONARY STATISTICAL INTERPRETATION OF QUANTUM MECHANICS, also known as the probability interpretation of the wave function, or the probabilistic interpretation of the Schrodinger wave function. Born argues - an argument that would lead directly to Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle -- that quantum mechanics "could be understood as a probability without any causal explanation" (Wikipedia), prompting Einstein to reply in a letter to Born that "He [God] does not throw dice". Born came to his decisive breakthrough in understanding wave function when, "in a paper on the scattering of electrons from atoms, [he] observed that the most obvious interpretation of the wave function is that it represents the probability of finding the electron at a given location. More precisely, he added almost off-handedly in a footnote, its square represents probability, and this observation is now called the Born Rule" (Peacock, The Quantum Revolution, 58). In his "precise and very detailed" second paper, "Quantenmechanik der Stossvorgange," Born"states that matrix mechanics started out from the assumption that it is impossible in principle to exactly describe a process in space and time? In wave mechanics Schrödinger had tried to construct 'wave groups' [now called wave packets], which have small dimensions in all directions and obviously are supposed to represent the moving particle'. Instead, he proposes to try a third interpretation and to test its usefulness on scattering processes" (Brandt, The Harvest of the Century, 170). Born summarizes his interpretation with "The motion of a particle follows probability laws but the probability propagates according to the laws of causality." The third paper, "Das Adiabatenprinzip in der Quantenmechanik," is Born's further development on the statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics; here introducing the concept of quantum tunneling. Born won the Nobel prize in 1954 for "his fundamental research in quantum mechanics, especially for the statistical interpretation of the wave function" (Nobel Committee). ALSO INCLUDED: In Volume 37, O. Klein, "Quantentheorie und fünfdimensionale Relativitätstheorie" ZfP 37 (1926) pp. 895 [Kline's part of Klein-Gordon equation] + Bothe, Walther (1926). "Über die Kopplung zwischen elementaren Strahlungsvorgängen." ZfP 37, 547-567. ("On the coupling between elementary radiation processes"). In Volume 40, "Zur Deutung der Molekülspektren " by Friedrich Hund (ZfP 40 pp. 742-764, 1927) introduces the concept of quantum tunneling. "Über nicht kombinierende Terme in der neueren Quantentheorie" by Eugene Wigner (ZfP 40 pp. 492-500 and 883-892, 1926) introduced Hamiltonian invariance and its implications for quantum transitions. and "Der Comptoneffekt nach der Schrödingerschen Theorie" by Walter Gordon (ZfP 40 pp. 117, 1926) presents Gordon's part of Klein-Gordon equation. CONDITION & DETAILS: 4to. (9.25 x 6.25 inches; 231 x 156mm). Three volumes uniformly bound in a bluish, dark grey buckram; gilt-lettered at the spine; tightly and very solidly bound.         Fantaisies Oceanographiques

Paris: F. Dumas, 1926. Small stain affects corner margin of one plate, some wear of the cloth backstrip of the folding case, yet a fine set.. Set of twenty-five pochoir plates and decorated title page measuring 375 x 275 mm., an excellent set in the original folding portfolio case. A rare and exotic album of vivid French art deco undersea fantasies. These skilfully printed pochoir designs based are based on tropical corals, anemones, plankton and jellyfish, combined into enticing patterns for possible use in fabric and wallpaper designs. The designs are remarkable for their use of the stencil overlay process of pochoir printing to create remarkable atmosphere and depth of field, combining subdued background colouration with vivid aquamarines and turquoise highlighting to catch the eye and entrance the viewer. The portfolio was limited to 250 copies and is beautifully preserved in the original folding case with cloth ties and elegant lettering stencilled to the front board. Fantaisies Oceanographiques is a mysterious and alluring celebration of Parisian pochoir printmaking at its finest. This set is signed by the artist alongside a florid dedication by the publisher.

        Torres-García. 36 reproductions de pintures i dibuxos. 1926

Barcelona, Monografies d'Art.
