He was the first European to travel across some of the desert areas (Murra, Jabrin) and his travels preceded those of Philby. A really sharp crisp and bright copy in the original gilt stamped cloth. Heavy beveled boards with NO wear at corners nor in hinges. Only minor wear at spine tips. Folding map in near fine to fine condition. Macmillan postcard laid inside front cover.         Falbalas & Fanfreluches: Almanach des Modes, Présentes, Passées et Futures

      Paris: Jules Meynial, 1926. First and only edition of French illustrator George Barbier's Art Deco masterpiece, Falbalas & Fanfreluches, one of six hundred copies, complete with sixty vibrant pochoir plates. Barbier's brilliant eye for color, lively historical imagination, and expertly controlled line made him one of the most sought-after artists of the 1910s and 1920s: "His images are frozen stills, small in scale, yet self-contained and perfect" (Meyer & Harlow). Barbier designed costumes for the Folies Bergère and the Ballets Russes, depicted the latest styles in Journal des Dames et des Modes and Gazette du Bon Ton, provided advertising for luxury brands like Renault and Cartier, and illustrated a series of deluxe limited editions, including works of Laclos and Verlaine. He produced a series of fashion periodicals and almanacs for French publishers, including Modes et Manières d'Aujourd'hui (1912-1923), La Guirlande des Mois (1917-1920), and Le Bonheur du Jour (1920-1924). In Falbalas & Fanfreluches (Ruffles & Frills), a series of five illustrated almanacs issued from 1922 to 1926, Barbier finally enjoyed complete artistic control of his production. The literary content was provided by a series of stylish Parisiennes: the poet Anna de Noailles (1922); the novelist Colette (1923); the actress Cécile Sorel of the Comédie-Française (1924); the poet Marie de Régnier, writing under her pen-name Gérard d'Houville (1925); and the poet Renée de Brimont (1926). The primary appeal of the almanacs, however, lies in Barbier's extraordinary suites of pochoir plates, each requiring up to thirty stencils to achieve the characteristically rich colors. His theme is romance, past and present: from secret liaisons in distant lands to jaded lovers in modern Paris, all presented with a sympathetic wink. Some of the most famous plates include his interpretations of the Seven Deadly Sins (featuring Proust-reading opium smokers in "La Paresse" and champagne-toasting restaurant diners in "La Gourmandise"), and his series depicting the elements and the seasons. Text in French. A perfect set, in original glassine, of a landmark of Art Deco illustration. Five octavo almanacs, original color pictorial wrappers. Color vignette to each title page, followed by twelve pages of letterpress text and twelve loose pochoir plates in each almanac. Printed on Arches paper, wrappers protected by original glassine. Set housed in a custom box of wood, leather, and marbled paper, spine panel lettered in gilt, within a marbled paper slipcase.

      Privately printed 1926 - SUBSCRIBER'S or "CRANWELL" EDITION, ONE OF 170 COMPLETE COPIES (from a total edition of 211 copies), INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR "COMPLETE COPY | 1.XII.26 TES." on p.XIX, 4to., single additional manuscript correction to the illustration list, printed in red and black, 66 plates (mostly in colour) and 58 illustrations in the text (one coloured), by Roberts, Kennington, Nash, Nicholson and others, 4 folding coloured maps, decorative initials by Edward Wadsworth, original brown morocco gilt by C. & C. McLeish (identifiable by the vertical alignment of the letters "TEL" in the spine lettering), spine gilt in compartments, endpapers by Kennington, collector's brown cloth folding box, minor spotting to fore-edge and a few leaves. A fine copy of the limited edition of Lawrence of Arabia's epic masterpiece, in which he "reveals how by sheer willpower he made history" (ODNB). Following his extraordinary military and diplomatic career in Arabia, and having already become a legendary figure in the public imagination, T.E. Lawrence purchased his Dorset cottage retreat Clouds Hill in 1924 to write his book about the war. The first draft of Seven Pillars of Wisdom was completed by November 1919, but soon lost, according to the author, on Reading Station. A second draft was finished during 1922, and finally appeared as a private edition, reflecting Lawrence's love of fine printing, in the present form in 1926. An abridged version, Revolt in the Desert, was published in 1927. "Subtitled 'A triumph', its climax is the Arab liberation of Damascus, a victory which successfully concludes a gruelling campaign and vindicates Lawrence's faith in the Arabs. In a way Seven Pillars is a sort of Pilgrim's Progress, with Lawrence as Christian, a figure sustained by his faith in the Arabs, successively overcoming physical and moral obstacles." (ODNB). Illustrated bookplate of stage and screen actress Florence Eldridge on paste down. Hemingway was a comrade and friend of her and her husband, star actor Fredric March. All were active in the Loyalist movement during the Spanish Civil War. Eldridge would give a 1937 presentation before the Library of Congress for Hemingway's documentary film The Spanish Earth. Hemingway also financed the film The 400 Million, which March narrated. Later March and Eldridge would act in a radio play of A Farewell to Arms.

A candid, on-the-set photograph of director Fritz Lang, cinematographer Karl Freund, and others working on an on a complex, double-camera shot (presumably outdoors and in cold weather, judging from the lighting and the clothing of those in the photograph) in which Maria (Brigitte Helm) attempts to warn the residents of the Lower City about an imminent flood. To accomplish this, she climbs a structure in the center of the town square, where she struggles with a large lever that will barely budge. When she finally moves the lever, the gong just above her begins to ring, alerting the populace to the danger. An extraordinary insight into the making of one of the most legendary films of all time. Shot by Horst von Harbou, brother of Lang's wife and frequent screenwriter, Thea von Harbou. Horst von Harbou worked as a still photographer for UFA on two of Lang's subsequent films, Woman in the Moon (1929) and M (1931). Publisher's dark green cloth, with Christopher Robin and Pooh image stamped in gilt to the front board, spine lettering in gilt, top edge gilt, pictorial endpapers. Near fine, with some light rubbing to the extremities, tiny dent and a few faint spots to cloth, covers slightly bowed, otherwise fresh binding, former owner's bookplate to a front flyleaf, bright and clean interior. Overall, a very clean and pleasing copy. Winnie-the-Pooh is the second in Milne's series of children's books featuring the adventures of the teddy bear character Winnie the Pooh and his friends. Each telling an individual and complete story, the chapters of Winnie-the-Pooh could be read independently of one another. Milne created the story of Winnie the Pooh for his son Christopher Robin, who had a teddy bear named Edward Bear. In his introduction, Milne explains how Edward Bear became Winnie the Pooh, although he notes that "we can't remember whether Winnie is called after Pooh, or Pooh after Winnie." The name "Winnie" comes from a bear that the Milnes saw at the London Zoo, while the name "Pooh" is from a swan whom the fictional Christopher Robin encountered in When We Were Very Young (1924).. An attractive copy with only very minor wear to the binding or gold labels. Corners of top board turn in, very slight separation within the page block in 2 - 3 places and a few leaves near the end roughly opened, with marginal chips. In all a pleasing example of this important early 20th century novel. Hemingway's classic novel -- a Roman a clef about a group of American and British expats in Spain, centered around the characters of Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley. It was based on Hemingway's own experiences in Spain in the 1920s, visiting there with his wife and friends and watching bullfighting. It is without question one of the great American novels -- perhaps the most important to depict The Lost Generation. The novel was an immense success - college students began to emulate the dress and manner of the characters and Hemingway was made a household name. Interestingly enough, the first printing of the novel was only around 5000 copies, but this, and a second printing of a few thousand copies, quickly sold out. Slim 8vo, [6], 69 pp. Illustrated with several woodcuts and wood-engravings throughout including five wood engravings by David Jones, three engravings by Eric Gill, and twelve other illustrations by Desmond Chute, Harold Purney, Joseph Cribb, Hilary Pepler, and John Beedham. . Original quarter cloth and boards, as new. Bookplate of Peter Summers FSA. Limited to 200 hand-numbered copies. Highly important association copy inscribed at the front by Eric Gill: “Printer Poet Publisher Prig PEPLER 18 xii 26”. In Gill’s typical calligraphy, with a large ‘P’ supplying the first letter to each line. By 1926 Gill had fallen out with Pepler who was the owner of the St. Dominic’s Press and this inscription is testimony to the bad feelings Gill had towards Pepler after several years of fruitful collaboration. “The Catholic convert Eric Gill, also exempt from war service while carving the stations of the cross at Westminster Cathedral, produced wood engravings for the book. This collaboration marked the beginning of nine years of close friendship between Gill and Pepler... [by 1924] there were disputes brewing between him and Gill over guild finances. Pepler came from an affluent background and favoured a pooling of resources between families, but Gill was more cautious. Further strain was caused by Gill's possessiveness as a father; he mistrusted the relationship of his eldest daughter, Elizabeth, with David Pepler. Gill left Ditchling and the guild in 1924. Pepler was devastated by his departure and for many years sought a reconciliation. David and Elizabeth married, despite the breach. Pepler missed Gill, as a working companion and as a singing companion in chapel or at rowdy press suppers. Gill on the other hand referred to Pepler as ‘Hilario Bottomlessfinance’ and resisted all pleas for a reunion.” In retrospect Gill’s hypocrisy is evident especially with regard to his relationships with his daughters, and calling Pepler a “prig” is deeply ironic.

Eine Wiener Schnurre aus dem modernen Barock", die neben einem Privatdruck die einzige Buchveröffentlichung zu seinen Lebzeiten war. Er schrieb phantastische Erzählwerke, u.a. sein Hauptwerk, den utopischen Roman "Das Maskenspiel der Genien" (1958), parodistische Dramen wie "Kaiser Joseph und die Bahnwärterstochter", ferner Pantomimen und Ballette sowie zahlreiche Erzählungen, die dem anekdotischen Umfeld seines Bekanntenkreises gewidmet sind. Title-page, full page map, 4 head and tail-pieces (2 hand-coloured) and 17 full page engravings of ships and barges printed recto only and all but one coloured by hand. All by Edward Wadsworth. Copper plates destroyed after 450 copies printed. There is such a harmonious elegance between the typeface (Koch Kursiv) and the engravings that one must agree with Peter Tucker when he says, in Matrix 11, "It was one of the most beautiful books to come from the Curwen Press in the 1920s, or indeed at any other time. " Wadsworth's only original book and completely successful. An especially fine copy clean unmarked very slight bumping at head and tail but no wear. The slip case has done it's job but is quite heavily soiled with professional repair made to the top of the slipcase. otherwise a marvelous book original in every way. In Good Condition. The main issue being the front board as it has a large splash mark, if it wasn't for this it would be vert good. It has had no restoration, the front board is very badly marked but has nice shiny, original gilt, nice spine cloth with good lettering with a couple of little marks, good rear board. Inside the hinges are very good (ever so slight weakness to the front). The pastedowns very yellow, signature to page 3, with a lovely photoplate.
