        Turbott Wolfe

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company. Near Fine in Good dj. (c.1926). First American Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [extremely light bumping to a couple of corners, no other significant wear, vintage price sticker and bookseller's label (from the famous San Francisco department store The White House) on rear pastedown; jacket has shallow chipping along bottom edge (both panels and spine), also a bit at the upper corners, and the rear flap, which had been detached, has been expertly re-attached by a professional paper conservator]. Plomer's remarkable debut novel, published when he was just 23, deals with "the experiences of an over-sensitive Englishman in Africa -- Africa with its burning sun, luxuriant vegetation, its superstition, and the cruelty and stupidity of its white invaders," with its title character described by one latter-day critic as "a bizarre combination of Gatsby and Prufrock (and a possible genius)." When the book was reprinted a decade ago, Nadine Gordimer declared in a new introduction that it is "an inexplicable lapse on the part of literary scholars and critics that 'Turbott Wolfe' is not recognised as a pyrotechnic presence in the canon of renegade colonialist literature along with Conrad.” It caused a furor in South Africa upon its publication (by Leonard and Virginia Woolf's Hogarth Press), for its frank depiction of interracial love, and for daring to criticize the country's whites and their supposed benevolence toward the black population. Although born in South Africa, Plomer spent most of his childhood in England before returning with his family to the country (a British dominion until 1931), where he eventually became involved (with Laurens van der Post and Roy Campbell) in the short-lived magazine "Voorslag" ("Whiplash"), through which they intended to agitate in favor of racial equality. Local outrage over that publication and "Turbott Wolfe" itself led to Plomer's departure from South Africa in 1926; after several years in Japan, he returned to England, where his friendship with the Woolfs facilitated his acceptance into the British literary establishment. Although he wrote relatively little fiction other than short stories after 1934, he was a prolific reviewer, poet and essayist, and had a good deal of influence as the chief reader for publisher Jonathan Cape. He also collaborated (as librettist on several works) with composer Benjamin Britten, and published two autobiographies. The American edition of this landmark novel is much less common than the original Hogarth Press issue, and boasts a colorful dust jacket designed by Winold Reiss, a German-born American artist and graphic designer whose work showed the influence of Native American art and culture. [PLEASE NOTE that the rear jacket flap has been reattached by a professional paper conservator.] [This item is featured in ReadInk's E-Catalog 3.1, which can be perused in full at our website.         Iz istorii kampanii 1914 goda na russkom fronte. Nachalo voiny i operatsii v Vostochnoi Prussii [The history of the 1914 campaign on the Russian front. The beginning of the war and the operation in Eastern Prussia].

Prague: Plamia 1926 - Large octavo (25.5 x 18 cm). Original printed wrappers; X, 436 pp. 14 maps and schemes on separate coated paper. A very good, uncut and unopened copy; light soil to wrappers and spine strip and a few nicks to creases. One of the earliest and most detailed accounts of the Russian invasion of East Prussia following the declaration of war with Germany in 1914. General Lieutenant Golovin commanded numerous regiments during WWI; in 1919 he attempted to join the Kolchak White government in Siberia, but finding the latter in disarray he returned to Paris, where he became well known as a military historian and tactician. After the publication of this initial work on World War I, Golovin continued to study the war both from the perspective of Russian generals and through the memoirs of German and Austrian military leaders, and three further volumes appeared in Paris in 1930, 1936 and 1940 respectively. In the present volume, Golovin describes the outbreak of war, Russia's military position, as well as the first operations in Eastern Prussia. The extensive appendix reproduces a series of official orders as well as fourteen charts and strategic maps, loosely inserted on better paper stock. Savine 06239. Rare, especially with the complete set of cards. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Le nom

Liege: A la Lampe d'Aladdin, 1926. Original edition. Copy #2 inscribed “ respectueux hommage, quels meilleurs procédés pour enchanter le pčre que celui d'aimer ses enfants. Max Jacob '39" and with an original drawing by Jacob pasted in as frontispiece. Entire edition 395: 1 unique; 20 copies on Japon numbered 2-21 (as this); 40 numbered on Madagascar; 300 numbered on Vergé; 35 H.C. Edition rinted by Artisans Imprimeurs, F. Lefčvre, Paris. (5" x 7") Original wrappers, glassine, card slipcase. Very fine, unopened. “Painter René Rimbert mentioned in a letter to Jacob that if his expected child were to be a girl, he would name her Saskia after Rembrandts’s young wife. In his answer Jacob pointed out that Saskia is not a Christian name and that it is important not to subject a child to lifelong ridicule. This exchange of letters gave him the impetus to write the charming story.” (P.188 Black & Green). The story concerns a girl who is named Saskia much against her mother’s wishes. The inscription reflects Jacob’s intention of writing a playful parable for a young person “What better processes to delight the father than to love his children.” Jacob’s influence on modern French poetry was profound, and his modernist lyrical verse is still widely read. Encyclopedia Britannica notes of Jacob: [he] “played a decisive role in the new directions of modern poetry during the early part of the 20th century. His “novels,” mainly epistolary, are exercises in verbal mimicry, reproducing every nuance in the conversation of the petitbourgeois, of whom he was a sardonic but affectionate observer [as in Le Nom]. He influenced many of his contemporaries and toward the end of his life was surrounded by a devoted group of younger and older artists.” Ref: online Encyclopedia Britannica: http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/298950/MaxJacob; Black, Moishe & Maria Green (Ed and trans). “Hesitant Fire: Selected Prose of Max Jacob” U of Nebraska Press, 1991.

        The Sun Also Rises

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First edition, first issue of the first printing, with the misprint ("stoppped") on page 181 line 26. Octavo, original black cloth. Rubbing to the spine, bottom and crown of the book panels, a good example. The Sun Also Rises was published by Scribner's in 1926, and a year later in the United Kingdom by Jonathan Cape under the title Fiesta. Though it initially received mixed reviews, it is now "recognized as Hemingway's greatest work" (Meyers, 1985). The fictional plot depicts a love story between war-wounded and impotent Jake Barnes and the promiscuous divorcée Lady Brett Ashley, but the novel is a roman à clef; the characters are based on real people and the action is based on real events. Hemingway proposes that the "Lost Generation," considered to have been decadent, dissolute and irretrievably damaged by World War I, was resilient and strong. Naturally, themes of love, death, renewal in nature, and the nature of masculinity are heavily investigated. For example, the characters engage in bull-fighting, which is presented as an idealized drama: The matador faces death and, in so doing, creates a moment of existential nothingness, broken when he vanquishes the possibility of death by killing the bull (Stoltzfus, 2005). The Sun Also Rises is seen as an iconic modernist novel for future generations (Mellow, 1992), although it has been emphasized that Hemingway was not philosophically a modernist (Reynolds, 1990). "The Sun Also Rises is Hemingway's masterpiece--one of them, anyway--and no matter how many times you've read it or how you feel about the manners and morals of the characters, you won't be able to resist its spell. This is a classic that really does live up to its reputation" (David Laskin).

        All the Sad Young Men.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First edition, first issue. Octavo, original green cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light rubbing to the spine crown. All the Sad Young Men is the third collection of short stories written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, published by Scribners in February 1926. Fitzgerald wrote the stories at a time of disillusionment. He was in financial difficulty, he believed his wife Zelda was romantically involved with another man, she had suffered a series of physical illnesses, and his play The Vegetable had been a failure. Upon publication--and somewhat belying the notion that Fitzgerald's most famous novel had not been enthusiastically received--the New York Times wrote, "The publication of this volume of short stories might easily have been an anti-climax after the perfection and success of 'The Great Gatsby' of last Spring. A novel so widely praised -- by people whose recognition counts -- is stiff competition. It is even something of a problem for a reviewer to find new and different words to properly grace the occasion. It must be said that the collection as a whole is not sustained to the high excellence of 'The Great Gatsby,' but it has stories of fine insight and finished craft." Ironically, in a letter nine months earlier, Fitzgerald had advised his editor Max Perkins against publicizing the book through the newspaper. "Rather not use advertising appropriation in Times--people who read Times Book Review won't be interested in me."

Paris, 1926. 8vo. original printed wrappers. Inner front hinge a little fragile, but a very well preserved, clean, and fresh copy. Richly illustrated throughout. Inscribed to half-title: "Hommage de l'auteur/ Dr. Noël/ 31 rue Marbeuf/ Paris". (2), 84 pp. + final blank.. Rare first edition; inscribed by the author, of the only work published by the first female plastic surgeon, Pioneer and innovator of several surgical procedures, Suzanne Noël's groundbreaking contribution to the modernization of cosmetic surgery, and the first work to deal with the social aspects of plastic surgery. "[I]t is almost mandatory to refer to one of the most remarkable people and the first woman in the history of aesthetic surgery. An early pioneer in the development of facelifting and eyelid plastic techniques was Madame le Dr. A. (Suzanne) Noël, whose book "La Chirurgie Esthétique: Son Rôle Social" appeared in 1926. A German translation of this book appeared 6 years later..." (Gonzales-Ulloa, The Creation of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, p. 17).The work constitutes one of the first richly illustrated works of plastic surgery and is among the very first to contain before- and after-pictures. It is furthermore one of the very first medical books devoted solely to plastic surgery published in the 20th century."Noël stated that her interest in cosmetic surgery began in 1912 when one of the great ectresses of France returned from America after a triumphant tour. All of the newspapers remarked how, by means of practical operation of the scalp, she had regained a surprising youthfulness. Thus some type of facelifting procedure was already being performed in America before or at least during 1912 by a surgeon or surgeons not identified by name. Impressed by these newspaper reports, Noël pinched the skin of her own face with her fingers in different places and in different directions to try to adjust the skin folds, She was surprised by what she was able to accomplish by merely lifting her facial skin with her fingers so she began to study this question seriously. Noël devised wooden clips, experimented with them in living anesthetized rabbits, and found that when applied to the skin the clips produced the same "lifting results" as she had previously achieved with her fingers... Her cosmetic surgery book was the only one of the five mentioned previously that included numerous photographs - 59 pre- and postoperative photographs of the results of her skillful surgery. Among those subjects described in detail in a book containing 11 operative illustrations and 51 photographs of technique for surgical correction are baggy eyelids, facial, forehead, eyelid, and neck wrinkles; and double chins. Also discussed are correction of redundant neck skin by massive excision of skin and scalp tissue and the nape of the neck and in the suboccipital scalp region.; the excision of large nevi (hairy and otherwise) of the breast, neck, and posterior auricular regions; the correction of keloidal burn scars of the neck, of flabby tissues of the arms of ageing women, and of protruding ears; and the excision of forearm tattoos." (Gonzales-Ulloa, pp. 19-20)
