        The Making of a Magazine.

New York: The New Yorker,, [1926]. A Tour Through the Vast Organization of The New Yorker. Octavo (42 pp.). Original patterned boards, paper label on front cover. Illustrations throughout by Johan Bull. Spine absent, boards a little loose and slightly dished. Housed in a custom made greyish-brown cloth solander box. First and only edition. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "To David Cort, Esq, with sincere regards, Corey Ford - Apr., 9, 1926". A very appealing New Yorker association: Corey Ford (1902-1969), humorist and writer, was the creator of the character of Eustace Tilley, who, as drawn by Rea Irvin, adorned the cover of the very first issue of The New Yorker (21 February 1925). David Cort (1904-1983) was a writer - contributing a handful of pieces to The New Yorker between 1926 and 1930 - who is perhaps better remembered as being the one-time lover of Lillian Hellman: "In New York [Hellman] had become involved in a passionate affair with David Cort, 'a bright, egotistical young would-be writer... who would later become the foreign editor for the yet unformed Life magazine'" (Carl Rollyson, Lillian Hellman: Her Life and Legend, 2008, pp. 26-27). Ford's creation, Eustace Tilley, is the hero of this slim volume, which gathers together a series of witty articles entitled "The Making of a Magazine"; these began on the inside front cover of the 8 August issue during that first summer of 1925. The stylish illustrations are by Johan Bull. Decidedly scarce: not in Copac, OCLC locates only 10 copies worldwide (all in US or Canadian institutional libraries).

        The Sun Also Rises

Charles Scribner's Sons 1926 - "The Sun Also Rises" by Ernest Hemingway. First edition, first printing, and first issue with the misspelling of the word stopped as "stoppped" on page 181, line 26. Published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1926. 12mo[5" x 7 3/8"], 259 pp. The book is bound in black leather with gilt titling to the spine. The leather is in fine condition. The interior is in very good condition. A faint notation in colored pencil on the title page which has been partially erased. The textblock is toned with some light scattered spotting. "The Sun Also Rises" is the first major novel written by Ernest Hemingway. Published in 1926, the novel was recognized as a major modern piece of literature and established Hemingway's status as a literary figure. "The Sun Also Rises" is about a group of American expatriates who live in Paris and travel to Pamplona, Spain to watch the bullfights. Based largely on Hemingway and his friends, deemed "The Lost Generation", which included writers, artists, and poets, the novel is a reflection on the group and the specific relationships and dynamics within it. On the surface, the novel is the love story between protagonist Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley, a divorcee and temptress. Within the course of the novel, though, Lady Brett manages to seduce a string of men, causing tensions to run high with bitter jealousy. It is a story of unrequited love, lust, envy, beauty, and seedy ugliness. One of Hemingway's most important works, "The Sun Also Rises" is an American classic.       [London]: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1926. First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good+ in Archival Plastic Cover. Shepard, E. H.. A really lovely copy of one of our favorite books, the most important of A.A. Milne's Christoper Robin books. To say that "Winnie-The-Pooh is a children's classic is to understate its importance, especially when the book we have is a very desirable First Edition. And this volume is one of the nicest we have seen. It is bound in the original dark green cloth with gold gilt on the covers, the titling on the spine and on the top edges. [iii]-xi, [5], 158, [2] pp. Illustrated by E.H. Shepard. The pictorial map endpapers are clean and bright as are the interior pages. There is a light touch of bumping at the spine ends but very minor -- otherwise the book is in fine (our best) condition. The precious original dustjacket has protected the book well but shows the wear and sunning typical of this dustjacket although it shows no signs of previous repairs. The creases are darkened and very small chips are missing at the crease edges but the dustjacket is complete. Protected by our archival dustjacket.

        Winnie the Pooh

London: Methuen & Co., Ltd., 1926 Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. First edition, first printing. Publisher's dark green cloth, with Christopher Robin and Pooh image stamped in gilt to the front board, spine lettering in gilt, top edge gilt, pictorial endpapers. Fine, with bright gilt, corners only very lightly bumped, former owner's 1926 inscription and bookplate to a front flyleaf, black and white magazine-clipped photograph of Milne and his son to the verso of a front flyleaf, otherwise bright and clean pages. Overall, a very handsome and extremely bright copy. Winnie-the-Pooh is the second in Milne's series of children's books featuring the adventures of the teddy bear character Winnie the Pooh and his friends. Each telling an individual and complete story, the chapters of Winnie-the-Pooh can be read independently of one another. Milne created the story of Winnie the Pooh for his son Christopher Robin, who had a teddy bear named Edward Bear. In his introduction, Milne explains how Edward Bear became Winnie the Pooh, although he notes that "we can't remember whether Winnie is called after Pooh, or Pooh after Winnie." The name "Winnie" comes from a bear that the Milnes saw at the London Zoo, while the name "Pooh" is from a swan whom the fictional Christopher Robin encountered in When We Were Very Young (1924).. Illus. by Shepard, Ernest H.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine.

        Five 1920s Regional Tourist Guides

Tashkent & Samarkand: Central Asian Committee for Museums and the Protection of Monuments, Art and Nature, and Uzbek Committee of Cultural and Natural Monuments,, 1926-9. Small octavo. Original pictorial wraps. Illustrations and plans to the text. All with careful restoration at the spines, overall lightly browned, but remaining very good. Uncommon, unusual and attractive tourist pieces. There are two editions of M.E. Masson's guide to The Registan and its Madrassas, first published Tashkent 1926 and subsequently Samarkand 1929, just four copies of the former and none of the latter on OCLC; guides dedicated to the Gur Emir and Timur's Mosque, also by Masson, single copies of these editions on OCLC; and a general guide to the sights of Samarkand by Vjatkin. Interesting insight into beginnings of "cultural-historical" tourism in the Soviet Union's Central Asian republics. Mikhail Evgenievich Masson (1897?1986) was an prominent Samarkandian Soviet archaeologist, the founder of the Central Asian School of Archaeology, and a fellow of the Turkmen Academy of Sciences. Following the First World War, Masson, who had begun training as an engineer at the Petrograd Polytechnic Institute in 1916, returned to his home city and began to work on the preservation of the landmarks of Samarkand. He was made curator of the Samarkand Oblast Museum, and began conducting archaeological excavations, adding to the museums' collection such finds as panels from the Samanid palace at Afrasiyab. In 1924, Masson went to Tashkent to become head of the archaeological department of the Museum of Central Asia. He led further expeditions including the Termez Archaeological Complex Expedition (1936?8); supervised the archaeological expedition accompanying the construction of the Great Ferghana Channel (1936), and was made head of STACE - the South Turkmenistan Complex Archaeological Expedition - (1946?68), and KAE - Kesh Archaeological Expedition - 1963. Vjatkin was also involved in Masson's Afrasiyab excavations, publishing on the wall-paintings.

ITA

Le film vi?rge Pathé. Manuel de développement et de tirage.

Paris: Pathe-Cinema, 1926. Early Cinematographic Manual with Developed Film Samples Pathé-Cinéma. Le film vi?rge Pathé. Manuel de développement et de tirage. 8vo. xii, 155 pp. 6 leaves of plates containing 107 examples of film (some colored). Paris: Etablissements Pathé-Cinéma, 1926. 239 x 155 mm. Original publisher’s quarter morocco, marbled boards, lower corners just a bit bumped, very slight edgewear. Fine copy. Former owner’s signature on flyleaf.First Edition of this rare technical manual of motion picture film developing and printing, issued by the famous French firm founded by the Pathé brothers in the early days of cinematography. By the 1920s the Pathé firm was producing “the requisites for the entire motion picture process; i.e., raw stock, cameras, laboratory equipment, studio and projectors” (Jenkins, “History of the Motion Picture” [1920], reprinted in Fielding [ed.], Technological History of Motion Pictures and Television, pp. 1-6). The firm’s manual contains detailed technical instructions on motion picture film development and printing, as well as information on several Pathé innovations such as the Pathé-Baby 9.5 mm. motion picture projectors and cameras for amateur use (introduced in 1922), Pathé’s “film inversible” (reversal film), and the firm’s techniques for tinting film stock and for producing full-color motion pictures. A stunning feature of the manual is its set of 107 actual frames of motion picture film, illustrating correct and incorrect development, the effect of temperature on film processing, and the various uses of the “teintures Pathés” with which the firm colored its film stock. The manual’s introduction contains a brief (and adulatory) history of the Pathé firm, and the first chapter is devoted to a description of its factory in Vincennes.
