Winnie-the-Pooh. With Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard.

London: Methuen and Co, 1926. Signed extra limited edition, number 10 of 20 copies on Japanese vellum signed by both author and illustrator. Quarto, original vellum. Inscribed with an original poem handwritten in Milne's hand as follows, "Vincent Seligman His Book. I know a bank where Vincent goes, And what he does God only knows, But something shady, I suppose. Yet he respects the worst of crooks Whose partiality for books Leads him to buy a Pooh-de-luxe. Doubtless the vellum covering Desired him, and he thought the Haine The pass-book of some Banker King. October, 1927. A.A. Milne." The recipient, Vincent Seligman was a banker who ran the London bank Seligman Brothers. He and his wife Barbara were close friends of the Milnes. In 1923 Seligman dedicated his book, Oxford Oddities, to A.A. Milne and, soon after the publication of the Pooh books, Milne gave prototypes of Pooh and Piglet soft toys to Barbara. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh has been considered a classic of children's literature almost since its publication" (Cooper & Cooper). In 1925, A.A. Milne purchased "a Sussex farmhouse for use as a weekend and holiday alternative to the family's London home... [that would] provide the setting for the stories he now started to write about [his son] Christopher's toys... Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner [its companion volume, published 1928] are, on their own terms, more successful as works written for children than anything else produced during children's literature's Golden Age" (Carpenter). "Ernest H. Shepard's illustrations, modeled after the actual toys, show character and movement in simple line vignettes, which add so much to the books that most people consider them to be inseparable from the texts" (Silvey).

The Tragical History of Young King Cole.

Venice: G. Zanetti,, 1926. By Didymus Belcampus. Octavo. Original cream-coloured wrappers, coloured illustrations on front and back. Housed in a flat-back cloth box made by the Chelsea Bindery. Title page printed in red & black, letterpress printed within a red wavy-line border, 6 illustrations in the text. Light soiling to covers, small nicks and chips to spine, general paper toning. A very good copy. First and only edition, privately published, number 83 of an unspecified limitation. A quite wonderful memento of a short-lived but entertaining spat between Sir Thomas Beecham and Cole Porter: "Beecham spent most of the summer of 1926 on the Continent with Maud Cunard. In Venice he had an altercation with the American master of musical comedy, Cole Porter. Hoping for peace and quiet, he found his nights shattered by the noise emanating from a black jazz band that Porter had imported from Paris to play on a barge moored outside the Salute. (Diaghelev, also in Venice, was another complainant.) Beecham, using the pseudonym Didymus Belcampus, wrote a poem that he arranged to have printed called The Tragical History of Young King Cole, who was finally swept out to sea and drowned" (John Lucas, Thomas Beecham: An Obsession with Music, 2008, p. 168). The final illustration shows an octopus grappling with a sinking saxophone that is still blasting out a jumble of notes ("while down below her author, jazzed and jazzed in ecstasy"). Porter didn't forget Beecham's light-hearted broadside and fought back with the skit "Operatic Pills" in his 1929 revue Wake Up and Dream; the "Operatic Pills" being a play on the fact that the conductor was part of the Beecham's pills dynasty. Decidedly scarce: not in Copac or OCLC.

        Rien Qu'un Homme

44 pp. play in seven acts by Deauville in response to the failed attempt at establishing an independent Catalan Republic in 1926 and the subsequent exile of many Spaniards to Brussels, including illustrator Helios Gómez. Illustrated with 8 graphic black-and-white plates after woodcuts by Gómez, signed within the plates. Large 4to. Orig. color illustrated wrpps. Some very minor soiling to covers. Brussels (Editions L'Equerre) 1928. Signed by author to title page. Limited edition of 200 copies. Max Deauville was a French-language author and member of the Belgian literary avant-garde. Helios Gómez was an important Spanish graphic artist, painter, revolutionary, anarchist-communist, and poet. His politically charged avant-garde black-and-white works were highly appreciated early in his career, prior to his exile from Spain in 1926 for his political views and activity. He returned to Spain in 1930 and was subsequently arrested multiple times for his involvement in and affiliation with Republican politics as both an artist and a politician. He was finally imprisoned in Barcelona for sedition in 1948 and was held until 1954. Very scarce; as of September 2016, WorldCat locates only one holding of this edition in North America.

Had I not Four or Five women once that tended me?

1926. Miranda and her Nurses"RACKHAM, Arthur, artist. "Had I not Four or five women once that tended me?" [London]. 1926. Original pen-and-ink and watercolor drawing, signed and dated "Arthur Rackham 1926" on lower left-hand corner, for the color plate facing page 7 in the Rackham-illustrated edition of The Tempest. London: William Heinemann, Ltd. [1926]. Image size: 10 x 7 5/8 inches: 254 x 194 mm. (board size: 16 x 13 5/8 inches: 406 x 347 mm.). Matted, framed and glazed. "'Tis far off/And rather like a dream than an assurance/That my remembrance warrants. Had I not/Four or five women once that tended me?" (Miranda to Prospero, Act 1, scene ii. 46).Written on the back of the watercolor in black ink, in Arthur Rackham's hand "The Tempest/No. 2 Miranda her nurses/by/Arthur Rackham".A very focused scene, with Miranda as a baby being held over a large blue and white bowl by a young woman with a sponge in her right hand. Another woman is standing over the child about to pour water from a blue and white striped jug over the babies head. Two other women are overseeing, one old woman holding a blanket facing the viewer and one younger woman kneeling facing away from the viewer. In the background is a wooden rocking crib with inlays and on the floor in the foreground is a pink rug. Lying on the rug is a small toy boat and a bowl with perhaps a piece of soap in it. The room is rather sparse with no other furniture in it. To the right is part of a window shedding some light into the room and to the left is a curtain closed shut. All the viewers attention is drawn to the center of the drawing - to the four women and the baby Miranda being bathed.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. Berlin, 20. I. 1926.

1926. 1 S. Gr.-4to.

2 typed letters signed ("Kandinsky"). Dessau, 15 May and 13 Oct. 1926.

1926. 4to and 8vo. Altogether 4 pp. on 2 ff. To John Schikowski (1867-1934), editor of the Berlin magazine "Vorwärts", about hostility toward abstract art: "Various opponents who remained silent for several years have become courageous again by various processes and are happy about the almost universal reaction that overwhelmed the arts. But mostly they are happy because they can again write about the arts in their ancient, superficial tone [...] The attitude that abstract art has value merely as arts and crafts and can produce only pure ornamentation has become the received point of view. The latter, for example, was claimed by Carl Einstein in the 'Propylaea Art History' where he discussed my work [...]" (15 May 1926; transl.). In his letter of 13 October, Kandinsky discusses Schikowski's book on modern dance in detail. - At the time John Schikowski was considered one of the best critics of modern art and modern dance.

Paris & Brussels, G. Vanoest, 1926.

1926. 3 volumes. VI, 73, [3 blank]; [3], [1 blank]; [3], [1 blank] pp. With 12 plans and 2 maps (mostly folding), and a total of 274 plates with heliotypes. Publisher's original, printed, blue paper wrappers. First edition in French of a work on the imperial palaces of Beijing by the Finnish-born Swedish art historian and professor Osvald Sirén (1879-1966). Besides the Italian Renaissance, Sirén was very interested in Chinese art and culture, and wrote various books on the subject, mostly in English. The photographs were all taken by Sirén himself, and he wrote an accompanying 40-page introduction on the so-called "Forbidden City", with two small chapters on the seaside and summer palaces. The heliotypes show mostly palaces, some from several angles, but also monuments, pavilions, statues, interiors and gardens, with short descriptions in both French and English. They give a unique view of the city in the early 20th century, since some of the buildings have vanished or are now settled in completely different surroundings. An English edition appeared simultaneous by the same publisher. - With a bookplate in each volume of W.A.S. Swets (1902-92). Minor foxing throughout, original paper wrappers heavily discoloured. Overall a good copy, wholly untrimmed and with the bolts unopened. R. Thiriez, Barbarian Lens: Western Photographers of the Qianlong Emperor's European Palaces, p. 182.

1926 - 8vo., original paper covered boards with paper labels on spine and upper board with scarce dust wrapper. Spine of wrapper slightly sunned, a little light chipping, small repaired tear to lower panel of wrapper, neat presentation inscription, bookplate, otherwise a very good copy preserved in custom made fall-down-back box with dark blue morocco spine lettered, panelled and decorated in gilt. A scarce item, especially in dust wrapper.         Stunning A.A. Milne ALS penned just weeks before publication of Winnie The Pooh with fabulous association

Chelsea, UK, September 29, 1926. 5.5" x 7.5". "Two sided ALS, signed in full signature ""A.A. Milne"". 5.5""x 7.5"" on stationary with letterhead of 13, Mallord Street, Chelsea, S.W.3. Tel Kensington 2074. Expected center fold. Near fine.An intriguing most humorous letter written by Milne dated Sept 29, 1926 as ""29 ix 26"" (with the month written in Roman numerals a format Milne used from time to time). The letter was written just weeks before the publication of Milne's most famous work which launched his status as a writer and introduced the world to his beloved character, ""Winnie The Pooh"". Of additional interest other than the insight into Milnes sense of humor, are several of Milnes references in his letter to touch points revolving around Winnie The Pooh. First Milne refers to a person in his letter as a ""cygnet"" (a young swan). A reference which may have been top of mind as Winnie The Pooh was a blended name created by Milne, being a combination of the name ""Pooh"", named after a (cygnet) swan they met on holiday and ""Winnie"", named after a Canadian black bear cub they often saw at the London zoo. And second there is a reference to Milne's publisher, Methuen, who he pokes fun with when he thought he was forced/required to write a letter to Methuen (Methuen was the publisher of the Pooh books) when clearly his preference instead he was looking forward to commence with a serial story for The Daily Mail as he ""thought he got a literary situation"" All-in a most humorous letter with Milne even making fun of practicing his signature. Below is the letter in full, which he signs using both his sarcastic nickname ""The Pen"", and again using his full name as ""A.A. Milne""""My Dear Sir I have arrived safely at the house to which you sent me and I think that I shall like the situation. I wanted to begin a serial story for the Daily Mail at once, but the man here said ""No, there's a letter we must write first"", I said ""Oh, I see"", and began writing ""Dear Methuen"" but he snatched me away from the paper and said it wasn't that sort of letter at all, which disappointed me rather because I thought I had got a literary situation. But he promises me we should (illegible) some poetry afterwards, so I said ""All right"" And of course which he began ""Dear Vincent"", I said ""Oh I know that man well; let me write the letter, while you get the ink off your hands"" He was terribly pleased with me, and I'm to keep on saying ""Thank you"" until I ran out of ink. I expect he has only (illegible) me of those common pens before, because if I went on saying ""Thank you"" until I had run out of ink, we should never get that (illegible) done today. But I really am to say ""Thank you very much … and I'm ... proud of my pen"", and something about hoping his work would be worthy of me, but here he is coming down from the bathroom, so I must close.Assuming you, Sir of my respects, and again thanking you for obtaining me this literary situation which I had always wanted from a cygnet or to speak.I am Yours faithfull [sic]The PenP.S. It was his fault about the ink, not mineP.P.S. Now we are going to practice his signature: A.A. MilneP.P.P.S. He says that the best (illegible)""A.A. Milne was most loved for his Winnie the Pooh series of books, all illustrated by E.H. Shepard, starting with :""When We Were Very Young"" in 1924 (Pooh's first appearance in poem #38, as ""Teddy Bear"", with the implied narrator of Christopher Robin""Winnie The Pooh"", 1926""Now We Are Six "" 1927""The House At Pooh Corner "" 1928A wonderfully fun early letter by Milne, likely written in a jocular manner to his friend Vincent Seligman, who was a German Jew whose family emigrated to the London and the USA in the 19th century. The letter just barely predates the vast success he achieved with his trilogy following the stories of The Adventures of Christopher Robin and Winnie The Pooh."

The Tempest

1926. Ariel, Iris, Ceres & JunoThe Title-Page Design for Arthur Rackham's Illustrated Versionof William Shakespeare's Play "The Tempest"RACKHAM, Arthur, artist. "Ariel, Iris, Ceres & Juno" [London, 1926]. Original pen-and-ink and watercolor drawing, signed "Arthur Rackham" on lower right-hand corner. The design for the title-page in the Rackham-illustrated edition of The Tempest. London: William Heinemann, Ltd. [1926]. Image and board size: 15 1/8 x 10 7/8 inches: 384 x 276 mm. Matted, framed and glazed (frame size: 25 3/4 x 20 3/4 inches; 654 x 526 mm.).The title-page drawing appeared in the book uncolored. As was often the case, Arthur Rackham has added background and full watercolor to the image in order to enhance its salability. This exquisite ethereal watercolor from Shakespeare's Tempest, depicts a pastoral scene with the airy spirit Ariel in a pale blue smock looking like it is spun from melody and fragrance. He is dancing by the side of a wispy, highly detailed tree and is holding a flute-like instrument in his left hand. He looks so happy as if he's just been freed by Prospero. In the background there are some distant trees and hills - a very peaceful scene. The tree in the foreground is somewhat different to Rackham's usual trees as it doesn't have his signature faces and arms within it. It is delicate and light hearted with leaves and berries growing within its trunk and branches. There is a squirrel sitting just above Ariel's head and birds can be seen in the overhanging branch. In the top half of the watercolor, Iris, Ceres, and Juno are dancing above the long branch, each of them playing an instrument - a lute, a shawm or flute and a tambourine. Arthur Rackham manages with the strokes of his pen and brush to capture all that has ever been and all that ever will be, one beautiful thought, one moment depicted exquisitely.Ariel: A spirit of the island, over whom Prospero becomes master after ousting Sycorax. He is the source of Prospero's magical powers, causing the tempest and many of the conspiracies in the play, and works for Prospero somewhat against his will. He is an intelligent, capable servant, and is finally freed by Prospero for his devoted service.Iris, Ceres, Juno, Nymphs, Reapers: Figures that appear in Prospero's betrothal masque for Miranda and Ferdinand in Act IV. Iris, Ceres, and Juno are goddesses from Roman myth; Iris is goddess of the rainbow, Ceres presides over agriculture, and Juno is queen of the gods. The parts are all performed by spirits, with Ariel performing the part of Ceres.
