Autograph cheque signed ("J. H. Ross"). London, 26. XI. 1926.

1926. Narrow oblong 8vo. 1 page. On a pale blue cheque form. A Bank of Liverpool & Martins cheque filled in and signed by Lawrence. - The subscribers edition of "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" appeared in December 1926, lavishly illustrated by Eric Kennington and other contemporary artists. The plates were printed by Charles Whittingham & Griggs, a difficult task, made the more so by Lawrence's perfectionism. Artistically, it was a resounding success, but the cost of printing meant that Lawrence sustained a substantial loss on the edition. This cheque for £45-11-6 (equivalent to roughly £1200 in modern terms) is most likely partial payment for the plates.

Smoky is born in the wild, but is captured and trained by a cowboy named Clint. Clint is taken by Smoky's intelligence and spirit, and uses him as his personal steed. Under his guidance, Smoky soon becomes known as the best cowhorse around. Unfortunately, Smoky is among a number of horses stolen by a horse thief. When Smoky refuses to allow the thief to ride him, being loyal only to Clint, he is beaten repeatedly in punishment. Developing an intense hatred for humans from this treatment, Smoky eventually attacks and kills the thief.

Parades End Tetralogy: Some do not; No more Parades; A Man could stand up; Last Post.

Four Volumes. Some Do Not; first American edition, 4th printing; No More Parades, first American edition, 5th printing; A Man Could Stand Up, first American edition; The Last Post, first American edition. Each 8vo. In publisher's cloth and original printed dust jackets. All four volumes are inscribed by the author to Jeanne Foster. The inscriptions are "The Gods to each assign a differing lot, Some rest on snowy bosoms some do not". Jeanne Foster from Ford Madox Ford New York Dec MCMXXVI; "The adjutant wd stand the B. at ease, the band wd play Land of Hope & Glory then the adjutant wd say: "There will be no more Parades" To Jeanne Foster from Ford Madox Ford New York Dec MCMXXVI; "You want to stand up! Take a look around .. Live as if you want to breathe deep after bein in a stooping posture for a long time" p142 Jeanne Foster from Ford Madox Ford New York Dec MCMXXVI; Jeanne Foster from Ford Madox Ford New York Dec 1927. First three housed together in publisher's illustrated card slipcase, which is inscribed and addressed in pencil by the Author to Foster. Jeanne Robert Foster was an American poet, model and literary editor of the American Review of Reviews, a post given to her by Ford. In 1916 she began to publish her own verse and also to travel in Europe. She met and became friends with such important figures of modernism as Ezra Pound, and William Butler Yeats. She also had a relationship with the author and occultist Aleister Crowley. Her relationship with Ford was close, although he stated in a letter to a friend in 1926 that they were not lovers, however a letter for Christmas 1926 reads very much like a love letter. The books are very good, the dust jackets are also very good with a tiny bit of fraying at head of spine panels, minor chipping at head of last title. The slipcase is worn and split and top panel is missing. A very rare inscribed set of one of the 20th centuries greatest works.

[Waugh, Evelyn- Waugh's Own Copy with Inscriptions] P.R.B. An Essay on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, 1847-1854

[London]: Alistair Graham, 1926. First edition. Original gray paper covered boards, blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine. [One of 50 copies printed]. WAUGH'S OWN COPY, with inscription to front free endpaper "To Elspeth Waugh, the author's godmother this bibliographical rarity (only fifty copies printed) from her brother, the author's father." And below that in EVELYN WAUGH'S HAND dated "Nov: xix: 1926" Bequeathed by her to the author Eveyln Waugh." Thus, Waugh's own copy of his vanishingly scarce first book (apart from an unprocurable juvenile story), bequeathed to him him by his godmother (i.e. his Aunt]. Waugh became interested in the Pre-Raphaelites in 1925, and especially after Alastair Graham suggested that he write something about the Movement for him to print. "The Pre-Raphaelites still absorb me. I think I can say without affectation that during this last week I lived with them night and day." - Evelyn Waugh, Diaries, 14th November 1925. Although Waugh took a keen interest in the production of the book, he nevertheless noted in his diary on 17th November 1926, "P.R.B. has arrived with an uncorrected mistake I had noticed before and forgot to put in the errata. It was presumably this error that Waugh added to the errata list in this copy in holograph green fountain pen. It was on the strength of P.R.B. that Waugh was able to secure the commission for his next book, Rossetti: His Life and Works . Waugh's father rather liked the essay and it could be for this reason that he decided to gift this copy to his sister Elspeth, despite the fact that relations between the two had allegedly been strained since the death of their parents 20 years earlier. Of Waugh's three aunts on his father's side, he always regarded Elspeth as his favourite. He described her as "selfish, capricious and sharp tongued" (A Little Learning, p.49)- it was perhaps this last attribute that would have attracted Waugh most. "Evelyn Waugh's essay on the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood is something more than a literary curiosity; it is also a fascinating art-historical document...The tone of the essay is lively and entertaining, and there are some enjoyable flashes of Wavian wit and sarcasm, in particular the reference to Christina Rossetti's poems in limp calf, and the 'line of Miss Siddal's neck." [From, "Postcript," by Christopher Wood, 1982. The Anthony Hobson Copy, purchased by Theodore Brinckman' in 2002, with his gilt label on inside of nice half morocco clambshell box. Included is a small collection of xeroxed communication from Brinckman to Anthony Rota about the book. Errata slip tipped in with additional ink correction at foot in the author's hand, browning to endpapers, original cloth-backed boards, light fading to head, corners a little bumped, a very good copy, preserved in custom morocco-backed drop-back box with small morocco book-label of Theodore Brinckman. Provenance: The Anthony Hobson Sale, Sotheby's 28th June, 1996. Apart from this copy, one of only a very small handful of copies of this work to appear on the open market in decades.

The Original Charleston. Musique de Cecil Mack et Jimmy Johnson dansé par Joséphine Baker dans l'Hyper-Revue des Folies Bergère "La Folie du Jour" ...

Paris: Editions Francis Salabert, [1926]. First Edition thus. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Quarto Original bifolium sheet music with pictorial covers, loosely inserted singlesheet, letterpress recto only. A little rubbed externally, with a soft diagonal crease through the front cover, but overall a very good example. Uncommon, just 3 copies listed by Worldcat (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, Biblioteca Comunale di Trento, Zentralbibliothek Zurich). <br><br><br />In 1926 Baker left the Revue Negre to join the Folies Bergère and her success became a sensation. The Charleston formed the finale of a frenetic show, the critic André Rouverge writing in the Mercure de France that "the Charleston, as danced à la Baker, fairly boils over with diabolic intensity". This score features a blissful dancing La Baker by R. de Valerio on the cover, and loosely inserted is a singlesheet "Théorie du Charleston" by Pradère-Niquet, Professeur de l'Académie Baraduc, giving detailed instructions for the dance.

Winnie-the-Pooh. With Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard.

London: Methuen and Co, 1926. Signed extra limited edition, number 10 of 20 copies on Japanese vellum signed by both author and illustrator. Quarto, original vellum. Inscribed with an original poem handwritten in Milne's hand as follows, "Vincent Seligman His Book. I know a bank where Vincent goes, And what he does God only knows, But something shady, I suppose. Yet he respects the worst of crooks Whose partiality for books Leads him to buy a Pooh-de-luxe. Doubtless the vellum covering Desired him, and he thought the Haine The pass-book of some Banker King. October, 1927. A.A. Milne." The recipient, Vincent Seligman was a banker who ran the London bank Seligman Brothers. He and his wife Barbara were close friends of the Milnes. In 1923 Seligman dedicated his book, Oxford Oddities, to A.A. Milne and, soon after the publication of the Pooh books, Milne gave prototypes of Pooh and Piglet soft toys to Barbara. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh has been considered a classic of children's literature almost since its publication" (Cooper & Cooper). In 1925, A.A. Milne purchased "a Sussex farmhouse for use as a weekend and holiday alternative to the family's London home... [that would] provide the setting for the stories he now started to write about [his son] Christopher's toys... Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner [its companion volume, published 1928] are, on their own terms, more successful as works written for children than anything else produced during children's literature's Golden Age" (Carpenter). "Ernest H. Shepard's illustrations, modeled after the actual toys, show character and movement in simple line vignettes, which add so much to the books that most people consider them to be inseparable from the texts" (Silvey).

The Tragical History of Young King Cole.

Venice: G. Zanetti,, 1926. By Didymus Belcampus. Octavo. Original cream-coloured wrappers, coloured illustrations on front and back. Housed in a flat-back cloth box made by the Chelsea Bindery. Title page printed in red & black, letterpress printed within a red wavy-line border, 6 illustrations in the text. Light soiling to covers, small nicks and chips to spine, general paper toning. A very good copy. First and only edition, privately published, number 83 of an unspecified limitation. A quite wonderful memento of a short-lived but entertaining spat between Sir Thomas Beecham and Cole Porter: "Beecham spent most of the summer of 1926 on the Continent with Maud Cunard. In Venice he had an altercation with the American master of musical comedy, Cole Porter. Hoping for peace and quiet, he found his nights shattered by the noise emanating from a black jazz band that Porter had imported from Paris to play on a barge moored outside the Salute. (Diaghelev, also in Venice, was another complainant.) Beecham, using the pseudonym Didymus Belcampus, wrote a poem that he arranged to have printed called The Tragical History of Young King Cole, who was finally swept out to sea and drowned" (John Lucas, Thomas Beecham: An Obsession with Music, 2008, p. 168). The final illustration shows an octopus grappling with a sinking saxophone that is still blasting out a jumble of notes ("while down below her author, jazzed and jazzed in ecstasy"). Porter didn't forget Beecham's light-hearted broadside and fought back with the skit "Operatic Pills" in his 1929 revue Wake Up and Dream; the "Operatic Pills" being a play on the fact that the conductor was part of the Beecham's pills dynasty. Decidedly scarce: not in Copac or OCLC.

        Rien Qu'un Homme

44 pp. play in seven acts by Deauville in response to the failed attempt at establishing an independent Catalan Republic in 1926 and the subsequent exile of many Spaniards to Brussels, including illustrator Helios Gómez. Illustrated with 8 graphic black-and-white plates after woodcuts by Gómez, signed within the plates. Large 4to. Orig. color illustrated wrpps. Some very minor soiling to covers. Brussels (Editions L'Equerre) 1928. Signed by author to title page. Limited edition of 200 copies. Max Deauville was a French-language author and member of the Belgian literary avant-garde. Helios Gómez was an important Spanish graphic artist, painter, revolutionary, anarchist-communist, and poet. His politically charged avant-garde black-and-white works were highly appreciated early in his career, prior to his exile from Spain in 1926 for his political views and activity. He returned to Spain in 1930 and was subsequently arrested multiple times for his involvement in and affiliation with Republican politics as both an artist and a politician. He was finally imprisoned in Barcelona for sedition in 1948 and was held until 1954. Very scarce; as of September 2016, WorldCat locates only one holding of this edition in North America.

Had I not Four or Five women once that tended me?

1926. Miranda and her Nurses"RACKHAM, Arthur, artist. "Had I not Four or five women once that tended me?" [London]. 1926. Original pen-and-ink and watercolor drawing, signed and dated "Arthur Rackham 1926" on lower left-hand corner, for the color plate facing page 7 in the Rackham-illustrated edition of The Tempest. London: William Heinemann, Ltd. [1926]. Image size: 10 x 7 5/8 inches: 254 x 194 mm. (board size: 16 x 13 5/8 inches: 406 x 347 mm.). Matted, framed and glazed. "'Tis far off/And rather like a dream than an assurance/That my remembrance warrants. Had I not/Four or five women once that tended me?" (Miranda to Prospero, Act 1, scene ii. 46).Written on the back of the watercolor in black ink, in Arthur Rackham's hand "The Tempest/No. 2 Miranda her nurses/by/Arthur Rackham".A very focused scene, with Miranda as a baby being held over a large blue and white bowl by a young woman with a sponge in her right hand. Another woman is standing over the child about to pour water from a blue and white striped jug over the babies head. Two other women are overseeing, one old woman holding a blanket facing the viewer and one younger woman kneeling facing away from the viewer. In the background is a wooden rocking crib with inlays and on the floor in the foreground is a pink rug. Lying on the rug is a small toy boat and a bowl with perhaps a piece of soap in it. The room is rather sparse with no other furniture in it. To the right is part of a window shedding some light into the room and to the left is a curtain closed shut. All the viewers attention is drawn to the center of the drawing - to the four women and the baby Miranda being bathed.
