      China. 1926-1946. Three volumes. Octavo measuring 6" x 8.5"; quarto measuring 8" x 10", oblong quarto measuring 8.5" x 11.5". Two of the volumes are string-tied cloth, one with an embroidered dragon illustration on the front board, the other is textured leather over paper boards. Contains 455 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1.5" and 6" x 8" with some captions. All volumes near fine with slight edgewear with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by Noelie Frances Gutierrez between 1926 and 1946 while living in China. The albums are a collection of family, school, and later military photos compiled by Noelie during her childhood and early adulthood. All the captions are written in English and it is assumed they were Americans stationed in China or that she moved to America after the war. The photos are not kept in complete chronological order but cover two decades of Noelie's life. A large part of her young life was involved with the Coy Guides, a Chinese version of the Girl Scouts. There are photos of the girls in uniform, picnicking, and camping. The girls are seen in group photos in uniform with the 4th Company of the Coy Guides. Noelie's father, who is seen throughout the albums, was a military man sometimes referred to as "Captain Daddy" by Noelie. There are photos of a military base, a few portrait photographs of Mr. Gutierrez, and one of a uniformed man in a bike taxi. The family photos show Noelie and her family around their family homes. One section of photos shows Noelie's first communion in 1936 with photos of her in her white dress and a procession with a statue of the Virgin Mary. In one album a trip to Shanghai is documented with photos of Noelie standing by the Embankment building and a group posing in a garden. The last few pages of one of the albums contains a collection of photostrip portraits of Noelie's family and friends with some signed and dedicated to her. One photo of a destroyed city street has a stamp on the verso saying it is property of "North China Daily News."The final album shows Noelie, with her family apparently still stationed in China, posed with a young soldier during World War II. The album focuses on war related imagery including barracks, an airstrip, ships in a harbor, and soldiers surrounding the 701st MP, Provost Marshals, HQ 5. A series of sweet portrait photos of Noelie and her soldier beau is featured here with the two of them looking cute and in love. The album shows photos of Noelie posing on a mini-golf course and with friends. Later in the album there are photos of a military medal ceremony with soldiers standing at attention and being presented with accolades. After these there is a section of photos showing a fire with images of men on ladders and with water hoses trying to abate the crisis. Men are seen posing around the barracks with military jeeps, enjoying leisurely activities such as playing games in the yard, and working on equipment. Light rubbing to foot of spine, an excellent uncommonly bright copy in the jacket with lightly toned spine, light nicks to extremities, 3 small closed tears to head of front panel, 1 to head of rear panel, another to head of spine. First French edition, number 80 of 100 copies, a facsimile of Gauguin's original manuscript journal, which, "represents an important project in book-making by this major artist". It is less common than the German edition, published in the same year with a total limitation of 400 copies. Only eight copies of the French edition have been traced at auction.

        Mathematical Investigations in the Theory of Value and Prices

Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6000.Photo-engraved later printing of Irving FisherÂ’s groundbreaking doctoral dissertation at Yale, presentation/association copy, with numerous diagrams for the design of a hydraulic mechanism demonstrating equilibrium prices in a multi-market economy, inscribed to a famous economist: “To Mr. O. Gressens with the compliments of Irving Fisher. February, 1927.”While a graduate student at Yale, Fisher “studied mathematics under Josiah Willard Gibbs and political economy with William Graham Sumner. When the time came for a doctoral dissertation, Sumner suggested he combine the two fields, and this was how Fisher came to write one of the earliest works of mathematical economics by an American. The dissertation was published in 1892 in the Transactions of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences and rapidly won him an international reputationÂ… FisherÂ’s economic research was marked above all by an ideal of quantification. Political economy, as the discipline had traditionally been known, underwent an important theoretical change in the 1870s and 1880s. The new neoclassical theory identified value with utility, or more precisely with the utility of the last increment of a product consumed. Because utility was defined ‘at the margin,Â’ this increment could be regarded mathematically as a derivative. That is, the new marginal utility theory permitted the calculus to enter economics as the fundamental basis of theory. This was why Sumner could recommend that Fisher join his study of political economy to that of mathematics. He relied for his dissertation mainly on books by the British economist William Stanley Jevons and by two Germans, Rudolf Auspitz and Richard Lieben” (ANB). Although Fisher was unaware of WalrasÂ’s Éléments dÉconomie politique pure (1874) prior to this thesis, he acknowledged the priority of that work on equations of general equilibrium in his preface, as well as the importance of EdgeworthÂ’s Mathematical Psychics on the subject of utility surfaces. It is generally agreed that “although only a student, Fisher had independently developed a theory of general economic equilibrium that was identical to part of WalrasÂ’s and included the concept of indifference surface, one of the fundamental bases of modern economic theory” (IESS V:477).In his dissertation, Fisher delineates the machine he constructed, a “hydraulic-mechanical analogue model of a general equilibrium system, replete with cisterns, valves, levers, balances and camps. Thus could he display physically how a shock to demand or supply in one of ten interrelated markets altered prices and quantities in all markets and changes the incomes and consumption bundles on the various consumers. The model is described in detail in the book; unfortunately both the original model and a second one constructed in 1925 have been lost to posterity” (The New Palgrave II). Fisher continued at Yale as a distinguished and popular professor until his retirement in 1935. His “impatience and opportunity” theory on interest was introduced in The Rate of Interest (1907), later revised and enlarged by him in The Theory of Interest (1930). Other major works include: The Purchasing Power of Money (1911), and the monumental The Making of Index Numbers (1922). Joseph Schumpeter “predicted in 1948 that Irving FisherÂ’s ‘name will stand in history principally as this countryÂ’s greatest scientific economist” (ANB). The first edition of this work was published in the Transactions of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1892 and subsequently went out of print. This photo-engraved reprint edition was published in 1925 in respond to demand; this is the second printing of that edition. This presentation/association copy is inscribed to statistician/economist Otto Gressens. Gressens wrote “On the Measurement of Seasonal Variations” (Journal of the American Statistical Association, June 1926, pp. 203-10), as well as “The Validity of Correlation in Time Sequences and a New Coefficient of Similarity” (with E.D. Mouzon, Jr., ibid, Dec. 1927, pp. 483-92). The latter gave birth to a widely used concept known as the Gressen and Mouzons Coefficient.Only slightest rubbing and soiling to cloth. A most desirable inscribed presentation/association copy in near-fine condition.

Two leaves, 8-1/2 by 11 inches, of O'Neill's letterhead, writing on rectos only. $5000.Lengthy autograph letter signed by Eugene O'Neill to his agent Richard Madden, discussing a London edition of his works and productions of his plays Marco Millions, Beyond the Horizon and Desire Under the Elms.The letter, to his agent Richard Madden, reads in full: ""April 30th. Dear Dick: Just a line. Yes, it is alright for Cape to go ahead on the new volume—except give him to know that I am sore because I never notice a damn line of notice or ad about my stuff in his publishers magazine. He ought to do better by me. How about 'Beyond' - London? I don't get it. I never saw or signed any contract for that production and they must have started before they got your warning about using cut version. I don't like that kind of work. Campbell is too swift. Belasco wrote me + sent copy of his letter to you. He is some faker, what? I have written him, told him he could have all time he wanted if he forfeited his advance and always could have had—thereby calling his bluff. You may inform him ditto. I have a line from [George Jean] Nathan. He says he hasn't heard from you. Better keep in touch with him on 'Marco'. He is strong for it and has good hunches. He says he will urge it on [Winthrop] Ames if I am submitting script to him. I am writing Nathan to go ahead and get in touch with Ames as Ames has script already. If he hasn't, will you see he gets one at once? Please, for Gawds sake, bring in some royalties! I have written Kenneth [Macgowan] a strong protest against what I feel is unfair treatment. It is all McKaig's fault. Why don't James and Green make good 'Desire' royalties out of that advance they got? They ought to. All best! Gene.""The letter opens with a reference to Jonathan Cape, O'Neill's English publisher, and to a possible London production of Beyond the Horizon, but proceeds swiftly to discuss theater impressario David Belasco, who had contracted to produce Marco's Millions on Broadway in 1925, promising to spend the (then astounding) sum of $200,000 on the production. Over time, O'Neill had become frustrated with Belasco's delays, and questioned Belasco's commitment to the play; after Belasco withdrew from the project (only a few days before this letter), O'Neill had trouble finding a suitable replacement, and it was not until January, 1928 that Marco's Millions premiered at New York's Guild Theatre. George Jean Nathan, co-editor and drama critic of the literary magazine The Smart Set, was one of O'Neill's fiercest advocates in the theater world; in addition to reading and commenting on drafts of work, he would actively advocate for the production of works he believed in. Producer Kenneth Macgowan ran the Provincetown Playhouse with O'Neill in the early 1920s, and remained a close friend of his throughout his life; Winthrop Ames was a prominent theater directors in the teens and 20s; and Alexander McKaig was the business manager of the Greenwich Village Theatre, which was the main venue for O'Neill dramas in New York in the 20s. One small smudge to the first page, not affecting readability. Near-fine condition.

(They are a bit like 'paziente' and 'impaziente', 'patient' and 'impatient'). Following the March on Rome in October 1922, Mussolini became Prime Minister, the youngest till 2014 in Italian history. Master of his public image, the message of the present portrait is clear. Since my coming to power, all obstacles (to replacing socialism by totalitarian fascism) have been overcome and will continue to be. (By the way, in April 1926 I brushed off an assassination attempt). Relations with the Roman Catholic Church (whose power I envy but recognise) will be settled (in fact by 1929, with the creation of the Vatican State and laws making the church the church of the country). Italians including fascists have often looked back to Ancient Rome – for example, in my equestrian portrait here – but greater things are to come.

He attended the wedding at Westminster Abbey and was responsible for running their household and the receptions that the young couple held. During WWI Mr Seaton had served in France with the Royal Horse Guards and in 1919 took up special duties with Prince Henry and Prince George. He left the Duke and Duchess owing to a serious operation (performed by George V's surgeon) to go into the hotel business, then in WWII joined the RAF. He was assigned to furnishing and catering aboard the Avro 'York' Transport adapted to carry VIPs, in particular the King and Mr Churchill. When George VI flew to North Africa in 1944 he was delighted to re-introduce Mr Seaton to the Queen and Princess Elizabeth on the runway.

Mild partial toning to endpapers, neat contemporary inscription in ink to front blank, spine tips gently bumped. Overall a bright and sharp copy in the jacket slightly nicked at the head and lightly rubbed along the spine panel and top front panel. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. After the huge success of When We Were Very Young, first published on 6 November 1924, Milne was asked to contribute a story to the London Evening News. "The Wrong Sort of Bees", published on Christmas Eve 1925, was based on a bedtime story that Milne had told his son Christopher. It starred Christopher's stuffed bear, who had made his first public appearance in the poem "Teddy Bear", published in Punch in 1924 and later in When We Were Very Young. The original toy was a top-of-the-range Alpha Farnell bought at Harrods for Christopher Milne's first birthday, known initially as Edward or Edward Bear, then later rechristened Winnie-the-Pooh (after a favourite bear cub at London zoo). Winnie-the-Pooh was an immediate success and garnered even more enthusiastic reviews than its predecessor, with one critic writing that "When the real Christopher Robin is a little old man, children will find him waiting for them. It is the child's book of the season that seems certain to stay" (Thwaite p. 317). The book was first published in London on 14 October 1926 in an edition of 30,000 regular trade copies.

      His Majesty's Stationary Office, May 5 - May 13, 1926.. 8 issues. A complete set of the British Gazette newspaper. All in very good condition, folded, with some toning as expected with newsprint. Overall an exceptionally good set, housed in a leather-spined clamshell box with gilt titles to spine. During the the General Strike of 1926 Churchill edited this paper, which was initiated to combat the closing-down of the newspaper offices. It was published from the Daily Telegraph building in Fleet Street, where it was also printed by a volunteer staff. The British Gazette ran for eight issues between 5 May and 13 May excluding Sunday 9 May. Its circulation figures are: 232,000; 507,000; 655,000; 836,000; 1,801,400; and 2,209,000. The sales for the last issue were well in excess of the 2,000,000 mark. It is currently thought that most of the paper was written by Churchill himself. In the final issue, the article 'The Birth and Life of the British Gazette' closes with the most Churchillian turn of phrase: 'It becomes a memory; but it remains a monument'.

This paper further contains his attempted proof of the continuum hypothesis which led to the later work of Kurt Gödel and Paul Cohen. (Van Heijenoort: From Frege to Gödel, pp.367-92:) "Hilbert devoted to the foundations of mathematics a series of papers ... Among all these contributions the 1925 paper [the offered item] stands out as the most comprehensive presentation of Hilbert's ideas. It is the text of an address delivered in Münster on 4 June 1925 at a meeting organized by the Westphalian Mathematical Society to honor the memory of Weierstrass. In addition to the original version [ibid], two modified ones [were published in 1927 and 1930]. These, however, are abbreviated and besides other passages, omit entirely the section that deals with the continuum problem ... The paper consists of two quite distinct parts. The first is a clear and forceful presentation of Hilbert's ideas at the time on the foundations of mathematics. It starts by recalling how Weiserstrass eliminated references to 'infinity' in analysis (Hilbert could have mentioned Cauchy and D'Alembert) and reviews the role played by infinite in physics, set theory, and, when we deal with general propositions, logic. Leaning on the example of arithmetic, it introduces the distinction between finitary and ideal propositions, and it undertakes a simultaneous formalization of logic and arithmetic ... The second part of the paper is a sketch of an attempted proof of the continuum hypothesis. Stated for the first time by Cantor at the very beginning of the development of set theory (1878), presented by Hilbert as Problem no. 1 in his famous list of unsolved mathematical problems (1900), the continuum problem for years resisted the efforts of mathematicians. The only partial result known at the time of Hilbert's attempted proof was König's: the power of the continuum is not a limit of denumerably many smaller cardinal numbers ... Instead of the set of real numbers Hilbert considers the equivalent set of number-theoretic functions and undertakes to prove that there is a mapping of the set of ordinals of the second number class onto the set of these functions. By dealing with the definitions of functions rather than with the functions themselves the argument takes on a metamathematical aspect that is absent from Cantor's work. The fact that the values of a number-theoretic function may be made to depend on the solvability of a certain mathematical problem establishes a connection between the second part of the paper and the first, and Hilbert invokes his previously expressed conviction that every well-posed mathematical problem is solvable. If the definition of a function involves the solvability of a mathematical problem, it will contain an unbounded existential quantifier, or, in Hilbert's system, the ε-function. Convinced of the possibility of justifying the transfinite part of mathematics by metamathematical means, Hilbert states as Lemma I that such definitions of functions can be replaced by recursive definitions, in which, except for a string of prenex universal quantifiers, no quantifier occurs. ... Hilbert then proceeds to show that, since recursion equations defining functions contain 'variable-types' of increasing height, these equations parallel the definitions of the ordinals of the second number class. ... Among several unproved statements, it contains in particular, as Lemma II, the assertion that in the definitions of number-theoretic functions transfinite recursion can be replaced by ordinary recursion. Hilbert's attempt aroused few comments. Paul Lévy recalls: 'Zermelo told me in 1928 that even in Germany nobody understood what Hilbert meant'. ... The continuum hypothesis was proved by Gödel (1938, 1939, 1940) to be consistent with the customary axioms of set theory and by Cohen (1963-64) to be independent of these axioms. ... In his review of Gödel's second paper of the consistency of the continuum (1939), Bernays wrote: 'The whole Gödel reasoning may also be considered as a way of modifying the Hilbert project for a proof of the Cantor continuum hypothesis, as described in [Über das Unendliche, 1925], so as to make it practical and at the same time generalizable to higher powers'.".       Ramsay Publishing Pty. Ltd, Melbourne 1926 - Folio 27.5 x 38cm, blue cloth with gilt stamped titles and vignette to the front and spine. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut, pictorial endpapers, (ii), 166pp with 51 tipped in illustrations, 19 of which are colour and have captioned tissue guards and numerous black and white images throughout the text. This is an unusual copy in that it has the limitation page and list of subscribers, but is neither numbered nor signed. There is rubbing to the spine tips and fore edge corners with two small splits in the cloth of 2-4mm at the foot of the spine and rubbed through at the corners. The top corner of the upper board and the bottom corner of the lower board are lightly bruised. There is a patch of the front board that is slightly lighter (see image). Internally, all plates and tissue guards are present. The plates themselves are not creased but 5 of the tissue-guards are wrinkled/creased and one has what looks like a grubby mark at the top, as does the top right hand corner of one of the black and white plates. In addition one of the tissue guards has a closed tear of 7cm to the top edge, there is a 3cm tear at the gutter of p82 which extends up from the bottom edge and one has faint initials in pink pencil. Pages 132 & 138 have had the words "v. good 1" and "v.ex 1" erases but the impression still remains. Also, three of the small black and white images on pages 4, 21 and 37, have been coloured in, albeit very neatly. There are occasional finger marks and other light marks in the margins throughout. Johnson had included several of Braithwaite's poems in his pioneering Book of American Negro Poetry (1922)

Color pictographic / pictorial map, 23 3/4 x 34 1/2 inches on sheet size 25 x 35 1/2 inches, now professionally mounted on linen backing minimising wear along creases, extra fold along lower left fold. A whimsical pictorial map of Cape Cod by Melanie Elisabeth Leonard distinguished by a mythical green and orange sea creature, its tail forming the Cape Cod Canal. Images of historical and natural events ("Easterly Gales") and places on the Island enhance the decorative border of fish. The legend shows the pictographs used to indicate noteworthy sights, from Light-houses to Salt Haycocks, from fishermen to bootleggers.
