        Schriftsteller (1886-1950): Eigenh. Brief mit U. Berlin, 14. III. 1928. 4. 1/2 S.

Passenger To Teheran.

London: The Hogarth Press, , 1926. Octavo. Original marbled brown and black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Frontispiece and 31 black and white plates. Ends and corners only a trifle rubbed, faint spotting to edges, endpapers and very occasionally within, an excellent copy of the book with the dust jacket dust soiled, and chipped at corers and along the edges but withal in good condition considering the rarity. First edition, first impression, in the rare dust jacket, and inscribed by the author to her lover Hilda "Stoker" Matheson (1888-1940). The inscription, to the front free endpaper, reads "From V. Dec 1928". This book was one of several inscribed by Vita and given to her then-lover Hilda Matheson (1888-1940), whom she nicknamed "Stoker", in December 1928. Matheson was Director of Talks at the BBC, and on 11th December Vita had delivered a radio broadcast there, appropriately on the subject of "The Modern Woman". They spent the night together, and Hilda was off work "sick" on the 12th. On the 13th, in one of the over 100 letters from Hilda to Vita which survive, she wrote "All day - ever since that blessed and ever to be remembered indisposition, I have been thinking of you - bursting with you - and wanting you - oh my god wanting you." It is possible that this book was gifted by Vita to "Stoker" during this "ever to be remembered indisposition", or at some other moment in this month at the height of their affair. The coupled also travelled in Savoy together in 1929, and Vita dedicated her poem from that venture "Storm in the Mountains" (1929) to Hilda. When Matheson died in December 1940 after a botched hospital operation, Vita in an obituary described her characteristically as a "sturdy little pony". Passenger to Teheran relates the author's travels with her diplomat husband Harold Nicolson through Egypt and Iraq to Tehran, Persia (Iran), to witness the coronation of Reza Shah. This is a superb presentation association in the rare dust jacket - we have only ever handled one other copy in jacket, and can trace only one at auction, in 1974.

        The Weary Blues

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. Very Good+. 1926. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Hardcover. SIGNED. This copy includes a laid-in postcard signed, and inscribed by the author - the book itself is not signed. This book is in Very Good++ condition and is lacking the scarce dust jacket. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. There is some light bumping and rubbing to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. This copy includes a postcard with a holograph (autographed) inscription and signature (and address to recipient). This is the author's first book and one of 1500 copies. " "The Weary Blues" takes place at an old Harlem bar on Lenox Avenue. There is a piano player playing the blues. As he plays, the speaker observes his body movement and the tone of his voice. Throughout the poem, several literary devices are used to guide the reader through the mixture of emotions the blues player is feeling." also: "James Mercer Langston Hughes (February 1, 1902 ? May 22, 1967) was an American poet, social activist, novelist, playwright, and columnist. He was one of the earliest innovators of the then-new literary art form called jazz poetry. Hughes is best known as a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. He famously wrote about the period that "the negro was in vogue", which was later paraphrased as "when Harlem was in vogue"." ; Signed by Author .

1926. Illustrierter Beobachter. 1. Jahrgang 1926, 1. Nummer. Titel: "Juli 1926. 3.-4. Juli.

Traktat o zihilishche [A Treatise on housing].

Moscow & Leningrad: "Zemlia i Fabrika",, 1926. Octavo (173 x 131 mm). Wire-stitched in the original illustrated wrappers by Konstantin Eliseev. Pale ownership stamp to title. Front wrapper lightly creased, paper stock very slightly browned, pale damp mark to lower margin; a very good copy of a very scarce book. Extremely rare first edition of a collection of short satirical stories by Bulgakov. It is one of only three books published in the USSR during his lifetime. The collection includes four stories: "A treatise on housing"; "Psalm"; "Four portraits"; and "Moonshine Lake". Three of the stories are semi-autobiographical reportage on the housing crisis as it affects the narrator, who, like Bulgakov, is struggling to earn a living in Moscow while writing a novel.

        The Sun Also Rises.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First edition, first issue of the first printing, with the misprint ("stoppped") on page 181 line 26. Octavo, original black cloth. In very good condition with some rubbing to the extremities. The Sun Also Rises was published by Scribner's in 1926, and a year later in the United Kingdom by Jonathan Cape under the title Fiesta. Though it initially received mixed reviews, it is now "recognized as Hemingway's greatest work" (Meyers, 1985). The fictional plot depicts a love story between war-wounded and impotent Jake Barnes and the promiscuous divorcée Lady Brett Ashley, but the novel is a roman à clef; the characters are based on real people and the action is based on real events. Hemingway proposes that the "Lost Generation," considered to have been decadent, dissolute and irretrievably damaged by World War I, was resilient and strong. Naturally, themes of love, death, renewal in nature, and the nature of masculinity are heavily investigated. For example, the characters engage in bull-fighting, which is presented as an idealized drama: The matador faces death and, in so doing, creates a moment of existential nothingness, broken when he vanquishes the possibility of death by killing the bull (Stoltzfus, 2005). The Sun Also Rises is seen as an iconic modernist novel for future generations (Mellow, 1992), although it has been emphasized that Hemingway was not philosophically a modernist (Reynolds, 1990). "The Sun Also Rises is Hemingway's masterpiece--one of them, anyway--and no matter how many times you've read it or how you feel about the manners and morals of the characters, you won't be able to resist its spell. This is a classic that really does live up to its reputation" (David Laskin).

Very good or better, with a slight lean and a hint of sunning to the spine, crease and some wear to the spine title label, light rubbing to the extremities, a few very faint spots to the endpapers, otherwise very bright and fresh interior. A clean and pleasing copy. Hanneman A6a. The Sun Also Rises is Hemingway's second novel and is considered his most important work. The text tells the story of American and British expatriates who travel to the Festival of San Fermínin in Pamplona, Spain. The plot, which is based on Hemingway's own experience at the Festival of San Fermínin with literary expatriates then living in Paris, unites Hemingway's main interests that continue to appear in his subsequent novels. Additionally, The Sun Also Rises utilizes the Iceberg Theory so evident in much of Hemingway's writing, where the true essence of the story is not expressly said in the plot but rather is meant to be inferred. Hemingway's experiences in Pamplona inspired his interest and vast knowledge of bullfighting, which he showcased in his non-fiction work Death in the Afternoon (1932).. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

The Weary Blues. With An Introduction By Carl Van Vechten

First edition of Hughes' first book. One of 1500 copies printed. Dickinson 1. Presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title page by Hughes to George Gershwin: "For George Gershwin, / creator of beauty / in blues, this / book, / Sincerely, / Langston Hughes / New York, January 31, / 1926". Hughes inscribed this copy to Gershwin at the publication party for The Weary Blues: "On Sunday, January 31, about two hundred persons gathered at the Shipwreck Inn at 107 Claremont Avenue, between West 120th and 121st Street near Columbia University, to help Hughes launch his first book. . . . The reading was a thorough success. Later, he signed books until his wrist ached. . ." Hughes and Gershwin would have been introduced to each other by Carl Van Vechten, their close mutual friend and patron, at one of Van Vechten's celebrated parties, to which both artists would have been invited. Van Vechten, one of the most influential music critics of the period, and an early champion of Gershwin and American vernacular music, met Gershwin in 1919; and it was Gershwin who "provided the music for most of the Van Vechten parties during the years that followed." - Bruce Kellner, Carl Van Vechten and the Irreverent Decades (University of Oklahoma Press, 1968), p. 193. "Gershwin came nearly every night, as Van Vechten recalled: 'There was a wonderful fire in him. The room would light up when he came in. . . . You were intimate with him the moment you saw him, and he had thousands of intimate friends.' . . . The Van Vechten parties provided an opportunity for Gershwin to fraternize . . . with such prominent black figures as the Johnson brothers (James Weldon and John Rosamond), Paul Robeson, and Bessie Smith . . ." - Arnold Rampersad, The Life of Langston Hughes (Oxford University Press, 1986), Vol. I, pp. 105-106, 124. Not only was Van Vechten responsible for Langston Hughes' literary debut, Van Vechten was also responsible for arranging for Gershwin's musical debut, when he encouraged mezzo-soprano Eva Gauthier to perform a group of American popular songs with Gershwin as an accompanist at the Aeolian Hall in 1923. Following Gershwin's performance of his Rhapsody in Blue at the Aeolian Hall in February 1924, Van Vechten wrote the first and most important article devoted to Gershwin to appear in a major magazine. In "George Gershwin: An American Composer Who Is Writing Notable Music in the Jazz Idiom", which was published in the March 1925 issue of Vanity Fair, Van Vechten called Rhapsody in Blue "the finest piece of serious music that had ever come out of America" and concluded his review by saying: "Negro spirituals, Broadway, and jazz are Gershwin's musical god parents. Whatever he does, or however far he goes in the future, I hope that these influences will beneficently pursue him." Van Vechten also declared: "Jazz may not be the last hope of American music, nor yet the best hope, but at present, I am convinced, it is the only hope." Decades later, in his introduction to The Gershwin Years, Van Vechten recalled: "I find many references to George in my diaries of the period and it is interesting to remember that my interest in the Negro began in 1924-25 and that George's interest grew up parallel to mine. We met many of the same people together, attended many of the same parties, concerts, and other events in Harlem together, and were equally cognizant of the same phenomena. . . . Some time during 1924-25 George began to express a desire to write a serious opera. Approaching me, he asked if I had any suggestions for a novel, story, or play he might use as a book. . . . Later he read Porgy and decided it was his dish." - Jablonski & Stewart, The Gershwin Years. With an Introduction by Carl Van Vechten (Garden City, N. Y.: Doubleday, 1958), pp. 24-25. It is impossible to overestimate Van Vechten's vital role in the Harlem Renaissance, or in promoting Hughes' and Gershwin's young careers; or in fostering the appreciation of them in later years. In 1944, Van Vechten founded the James Weldon Johnson Memorial Collection of Negro Arts and Letters at Yale; and soon afterwards, he established the George Gershwin Memorial Collection of Music and Musical Literature at Fisk University, where Langston Hughes delivered the inaugural address at the gala opening of the collection in April 1947. A stellar association copy Small 8vo, original blue cloth-backed decorated boards. Covers lightly rubbed, lacking the rare dust jacket (as was the case with all of Gershwin's books), otherwise in very good condition.
