North American Indians. Being Letters and Notes on Their Manners, Customs, and Conditions, Written During Their Eight Years' Travel Amongst the Wildest Tribes of Indians in North America. 1832-1839.

Edinburgh: John Grant, 1926 - 2 volumes, large octavo, original pictorial red cloth, titles gilt to spines and front covers with pictorial decoration in gilt and black, top edge gilt, others uncut. Very light bumps and rubbing to ends of spines and tips; an excellent, fresh set. Over 300 colour illustrations on 180 plates, including 3 coloured maps, one folding. A young lawyer turned portraitist, Catlin set out in 1830 from his home in Pennsylvania to record on canvas the indigenous tribes of North America and their way of life. His eight years among the major tribes of the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains resulted in his "Indian Gallery," an enormous collection of artefacts as well as more than four hundred paintings, including portraits and scenes of tribal life. The resultant book, first published with uncoloured plates in 1841, is "one of the most original, authentic and popular works on the subject" (Sabin). "The history and the customs of such a people," Catlin wrote, "preserved by pictorial illustrations, are themes worthy of the lifetime of one man, and nothing short of the loss of my life, shall prevent me from becoming their historian" (Hassrick). Hassrick 15; Sabin 11536.

Map of the State of New Hampshire.

Elizabeth Shurtleff & Helen F. McMillin. Copyright 1926. Color poster / pictorial map on sheet 34 x 23 1/2 inches, multiple folds as issued now mimimised by professional mounting on linen. Fold separations at upper centre and at right centre have been repaired with some unevenness of color where inpainted. Owing to the detail and bright coloration of the design this is not very noticeable. A very decorative pictorial map of New Hampshire by Elizabeth Shurtleff. The ornate scroll border at left and right is used to great effect in highlighting different seals associated with the state, its towns and colleges. The main body of the map is filled with little pictographs representing historical events and contemporary activities. The influence of MacDonald Gill's Wonderground map of London Town is apparent in the "speech bubbles" with short pithy sayings or quips emerging from the mouths of many of the characters. A beautifully designed map.

        Anne of Green Gables

L.C. Page, and Company, Boston 1926 - Second edition from / new plates, made in 1925: / the old plates of the original / edition in 1908, being worn / out. With new illustrations. / L. M. Montgomery Macdonald / April / 1926. Illustrated by Elizabeth R. Withington. Extremely Rare - Inscribed by the Author. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper. Additionally inscribed with a former owner's provenance note to the front pastedown: "This book, autographed by the / author, was presented in 1948 to / Sister Mary Kathleen, then superintendent / of nurses, St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, / by the author's son, Dr. Stuart / Macdonald, member of the / Staff of Obstetrics and Gynaecology [sic] / St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, Canada. / To Franie / Affectionately / Aunt Amy / Dec. 13, 1977". Overall, a clean and attractive copy with strong provenance. The only signed Anne of Green Gables we have seen. After inscribing the book, the author bequeathed this copy to her son, Dr. Stuart Macdonald, who presented this volume to the nursing superintendent at the Toronto hospital where he worked. In turn, the nurse gave this copy to "Aunt Amy," who chronicled the book's ownership history in her inscription. Aunt Amy gifted this book, and additionally inscribed it, to Franie. Franie passed the book down to the step-mother of the most recent owner. The personal nature of this volume's provenance emphasizes the rareness of a signed copy of this title. The author's inscription relates to Elizabeth Withington's eight illustrated plates, including one frontispiece. The earliest editions of Anne of Green Gables contain illustrations by W. A. J. and M. A. Claus. All three artists were painters working with a variety of mediums, meaning their works had to be copied by printers for mass reproduction. By 1925, the printer's plates of Claus' work had been used to the point that they were no longer producing clear images. Rather than making new plates from the original Claus illustrations, Withington created new original illustrations for the subsequent printings. Although the choice of illustrator was likely made by the publisher, Montgomery's inscription, which is accompanied with a small cat silhouette illustration, implies she was rather fond of Withington's artwork. Anne of Green Gables is a story about a young orphan girl, Anne Shirley, who is sent to live on a farm on Prince Edward Island with a family who had intended to adopt a boy. Montgomery drew much of the novel's setting from her own childhood experiences living with her grandparents on the eastern coast of the island. Like her readers, the author was quite taken with the jovial character she had created and wrote multiple sequels to this first installment of what would become a beloved children's series. Bound in the publisher's ribbed light teal cloth, with gilt lettering to the front board and spine, illustration of a woman's profile to the front board, publisher's advertisements at the rear of the text. A very good copy, with wear and light rubbing to the extremities, bright spine, spine cracked between the half-title and the frontispiece, otherwise intact spine, small piece of tape to the rear pastedown Illustrated by Elizabeth R. Withington Second edition from / new plates, made in 1925: / the old plates of the original / edition in 1908, being worn / out. With new illustrations. / L. M. Montgomery Macdonald / April / 1926.         The Imperial Palaces of Peking

Paris: Librairie National d'Art et d'Homme, G. Van Oest, 1926. First Edition. Three volumes; folio (33cm.); publisher's navy blue cloth, gilt-lettered spines, top edges gilt, others untrimmed; vi,67pp. & 274 collotype plates; additional 14 plates of maps and plans, all but one folding; frontispieces in each volume. Boards very gently shelf worn and corners bumped, upper cover of Vol. I dampstained; some plates starting to separate and one plate (no. 121) loose, not an uncommon occurance as the textblocks are too heavy for the bindings. Still, quite a nice, better than usual set in the original binding. The collected photographs taken by the Swedish art historian and sinologist during his stay in Peking in 1922.

        Winnie-the-Pooh.

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd,, 1926. With Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine, pictorial decoration and ruling to front board, and top edge gilt, yellow map endpapers. Illustrations throughout by Ernest H. Shepard. Spine rolled with bumps to spine ends, internally fresh; an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. With the publisher's order form for the deluxe editions laid in. After the huge success of When We Were Very Young, first published on 6 November 1924, Milne was asked to contribute a story to the London Evening News. "The Wrong Sort of Bees", published on Christmas Eve 1925, was based on a bedtime story that Milne had told his son Christopher. It starred Christopher's stuffed bear, who had made his first public appearance in the poem "Teddy Bear", published in Punch in 1924 and later in When We Were Very Young. The original toy was a top-of-the-range Alpha Farnell bought at Harrods for Christopher Milne's first birthday, known initially as Edward or Edward Bear, then later rechristened Winnie-the-Pooh (after a favourite bear cub at London zoo). Winnie-the-Pooh was an immediate success and garnered even more enthusiastic reviews than its predecessor, with one critic writing that "When the real Christopher Robin is a little old man, children will find him waiting for them. It is the child's book of the season that seems certain to stay" (Thwaite p. 317). The book was first published in London on 14 October 1926 in an edition of 30,000 regular trade copies.

Berlin: August Scherl. Berlin, August Scherl, 1926. First Edition. Third Impression. An important book, with four stills (complete) from the science fiction epic of the same year. The third issue in wraps. Preceded by the first thousand with the Willy Reimann illustration (of which was have a copy in stock as of writing), and the second thousand matching this issue. Condition is near fine. Externally just lightly worn, internally with a fairly trivial waterstain to first couple of dozen leaves. Doesn't really detract. Spine a little worn, but a very presentable copy. Thea von Harbou and her husband, Fritz Lang, worked on the film concurrently. The plot of the film and book were produced together. It was a massive undertaking, and hugely popular. It remains one of the era's most important films, and the present title is one of the most collectable books in science fiction film. Uncommon.         Television: Seeing by Wireless.

London: W. S. Caines for Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, 1926. First Edition of the first book in English on television. Dinsdale discusses the technical challenges faced by early experimenters (Jan van Szczepanik, Boris Rosing, Denoys von Kihaly and others), but focuses primarily on the work of the Scottish engineer John Logie Baird (1888-1946), the first person to produce televised pictures of objects in motion. In February 1924 Baird produced the first television image in outline, and in April 1925 he transmitted the first pictures between two televisions. By the following October Baird had succeeded in transmitting images with gradations of light and shade, and on January 27, 1926, he successfully transmitted recognizable human faces between two rooms by television. Of Baird's early experiments, Dinsdale writes: "Baird's weird apparatus--old bicycle sprockets, biscuit tins, cardboard discs and bullseye lenses, all tied together with sealing wax and string--failed to impress those who were accustomed to the shining brass and exquisite mechanism of the instrument maker. The importance of the demonstration was, however, realized by the scientific world . . ." (p. 49). Although he did not succeed in producing a viable system of television, Baird paved the way for future technical developments. Television reached a state of technical feasibility in 1931, and the first high-definition broadcasting system was launched in London in 1936 by the BBC. The plates include a view of the very first television picture. The Richard Green copy, with a tape repair on the back panel of the dust-jacket and some minor rubbing, sold at Christies' on June 17, 2008 for $16,250.00. Shiers, Early Television: A Bibliographic Guide to 1940, p. 841. 8vo (184 x 125 mm), pp 62, including portrait of Baird and 11 further full-page plates, original printed paper boards, pictorial dust-jacket (upper capital with a small professional repair, hardly visible), custom cloth clamsell box, a fine copy.

Photograph album documenting six years in the life of an itinerate west coast laborer, whaler, and general seaman

Oregon, at sea, and in many ports of call 1926 - The album measures 15.5" x 9" and contains 100 pages with over 300 photographs (mostly 3" x 5"), several pieces of personal ephemera, about 15 newspaper or periodical clippings, and 46 different beer bottle labels. The photos are arranged in somewhat chronological order, and almost all are in nice shape; a couple are creased or torn. Everything is pasted/glued to the pages save for a few newspaper clippings. Most pages are captioned in now faded white pencil. The album is worn. The back cover has been mended and the binding cord replaced. The pages are edge-worn. Deneen apparently was a seaman and laborer who moved from job to job, documenting his life with a camera and occasionally selling photos and short articles to magazines, e.g., "Dangerous Static" in Science and Invention, a short photo-essay about his experience working as a steeplejack on a 600' tall radio antennae. The album includes: 5 photos of the funeral of Nestor Varrio, a seaman and member of the Sailors Union of the Pacific who was shot at Linnton, Oregon during a gun battle with police after he and other members used a firearm to threaten scab dockworkers. 11 photos and a magazine clipping showing Deneen's work cleaning insulators on a 600' radio antennae for station KKK at Hillsboro, Oregon. 11 photos of a bullfight in Lima, Peru. 18 photos of a whaling expedition for the American Pacific Whaling Company that brought in the first whale of 1920 season including images of a fin-back whale at sea, firing the harpoon gun, and the dead whale in the water and on a dock. 6 photos of Hot Springs, Arkansas including the New Arlington and Waukesa Hotels and The Geary and Quapaw Bathhouses. 4 photos from 1900 of the shipwreck of three-masted saling ship, the Helga, at Waikiki Beach. Several photos of Deneen and shipmates holding caught fish including barracuda, sailfish, mahi-mahi, etc. Several photos of the Hood and Columbia River. A few photos of clam digging for canneries. A number of photos of shipmates and ships (both sailing and steam) upon some of which Deneen sailed including the Frank H. Bunk, S. S. Tennessee, Lyman Steward, and Meriden. Many other photos at sea and of harbors, cities, and countryside of Alaska, Alexandria, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, Portland, Richmond (California), and Shanghai. 46 large and colorful labels from beers of Australia, the Canal Zone, Germany, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Panama, and the Philippines. A truly fascinating visual record of a seaman's life in the early 1920s.

Winnie-the-Pooh. With Decorations by Ernest H. Shepard.

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1926 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine, pictorial decoration and ruling to front board, and top edge gilt, yellow map endpapers. Spine rolled with bumps to spine ends, internally fresh; an excellent copy. Illustrations throughout by Ernest H. Shepard. Über nicht kombinierende Terme in der neueren Quantentheorie [Parts I-II, complete]. [Offered with:] Zur Erklärung einiger Eigenschaften der Spektren aus der Quantenmechanik des Drehelektrons [Parts I - III, complete].

Berlin: Julius Springer, 1926-28. First editions, very rare offprint issues, of the papers that laid the foundations of the role of symmetry in quantum mechanics. "Wigner was a member of the race of giants that reformulated the laws of nature after the quantum mechanics revolution of 1924-25. In a series of papers on atomic and molecular structure, written between 1926 and 1928, Wigner laid the foundations for both the application of group theory to quantum mechanics and for the role of symmetry in quantum mechanics" (David J. Gross, 'Symmetry in Physics: Wigner's legacy,' Physics Today, December 1995, pp. 46-50). Wigner was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1963 "for his contributions to the theory of the atomic nucleus and the elementary particles, particularly through the discovery and application of fundamental symmetry principles." Provenance: the last three offprints with the signature of German physicist Gregor Wentzel (1898-1978), who made important contributions to quantum mechanics; he is best known for the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation for finding approximate solutions to linear partial differential equations with spatially varying coefficients. "Eugene Paul Wigner (1902-1995) contributed in a seminal way to theoretical physics. He is distinguished from other physicists who laid the foundations of quantum mechanics from the mid-1920s by his pioneering application of group theory and symmetry principles to quantum mechanics... Steven Weinberg has seen in the introduction of symmetry principles to physics the core of the revolutionary world view which has come to dominate modern physics: 'Out of the fusion of relativity with quantum mechanics has evolved a new view of the world, one in which matter has lost its central role. This role has been usurped by the principles of symmetry, some of them hidden from view in the present state of the universe...' "Wigner was a key figure in building the new language Weinberg is writing about, especially in the domains of quantum mechanics and fundamental particle theory. While Wigner was not alone in carrying out this momentous project, he was a pioneer in applying symmetry considerations and group theory on a grand scale to quantum mechanics... while Hermann Weyl is sometimes thought of as the originator of the group-theoretic approach in quantum mechanics, Wigner's groundbreaking papers on group theory appeared before Weyl's important work on the subject" (M. Chayut, 'From the Periphery: the genesis if Eugene P. Wigner's application of group theory to quantum mechanics,' Foundations of Chemistry 3 (2001), 55-78). "In the spring of 1926, Heisenberg had written a paper ['Mehrkörperproblem und Resonanz in der Quantenmechanik,' Zeitschrift für Physik, 38 Band, pp. 411-426] on quantum states of two identical electrically charged oscillators symmetrically coupled to each other. These, he found, separate into two sets of states, one symmetric, the other antisymmetric, under exchange of the oscillator coordinates. He further discovered that radiative transitions can occur only between states within each set, never between one set and the other. He went on to conjecture that non-combining sets should likewise exist if the number of identical particles is larger than two, but had not yet found a proof. Six weeks later, this work led Heisenberg to give the theory of a famous, yet unsolved two-electron problem, the spectrum of the helium atom. "Wigner, who had read these papers soon after his return to Berlin, had become interested in this more-than-n identical particle problem. He rapidly mastered the case n = 3 (without spin) [the first offered paper]. His methods were rather laborious; for example, he had to solve a (reducible) equation of degree six. It would be pretty awful to go on in this way to higher n. So he went to consult the mathematician Johnny von Neumann. In the late 1950s Wigner explained to me what happened next... "When he posed his question to von Neumann - Wigner told me - Johnny walked to a corner of the room, faced the wall, and started mumbling to himself. After a while he turned around and said: 'You need the theory of group characters.' At that moment Eugene had no idea what that theory was about. Whereupon von Neumann went to Issai Schur, obtained reprints of two of his papers, and gave them to Wigner. '[Those were] so easy to read, and of course it was clear that that was the solution.' Within weeks, he had completed a second paper, now for the general n-particle problem [the second offered paper]. It contains these lines: 'It is clear that one can hardly apply these elementary methods [he had used for n = 3] to the case of 4 electrons, since the computational difficulties get to be too large. There exists, however, a well-developed mathematical theory which one can use here: . . . group theory. . . . Herr von Neumann has kindly directed me to the relevant literature. . . . When I told Herr von Neumann the result of the calculations for n = 3, he correctly predicted the general result' ... Thus did group theory enter quantum mechanics. "Wigner has said later: 'I had a bad conscience because I felt that I should have published [that] second paper together with von Neumann.' Joint publications did soon follow, however, three papers on atomic spectra which take account of the spin of the electron" (Pais, The Genius of Science, p. 335). "Wigner perfected the group-theoretical 'explanation of certain properties of spectra' in three later communications [the last three offered papers] by taking care of the specific 'quantum mechanics of the spinning electron,' which he signed together with his friend John von Neumann and submitted in December 1927, February 1928 and June 1928, respectively... Von Neumann frequently came from Berlin to discuss matters with Wigner, who recalled: 'These papers were written principally by me, but I felt that I had to express my gratitude to von Neumann for having introduced me to the work of Frobenius and Schur; therefore I proposed to him that we should publish them together.' "The authors began their first paper with the remark that 'the purpose of the present note is to use Pauli's description of the rotating electron for an explanation of certain spectroscopic rules - by a method which has already been applied by one of the authors to derive a part of the spectroscopic experiences from quantum mechanics (without the rotating electron!) [Part I, p. 203], and announced the following programme: (1) to obtain the kinematics of the electron from Pauli's idea; (2) to apply the theory to derive those spectroscopic laws that are strictly valid if the magnetic interactions of the spinning electron are included; (3) to consider the rules for the situation in which these interactions can be neglected. That is, von Neumann and Wigner wished ... to derive essentially the complete spectroscopic structure of atoms" (Mehra & Rechenberg, The Historical Development of Quantum Theory, Vol. 6, pp. 495-6). "In the [1928] papers of von Neumann and Wigner, the whole apparatus of group characters and representations was put into action and the complete system of term zoology, including selection rules, intensity formulae [and] Stark effect was developed (Van der Waerden, quoted in ibid., p. 488). Born in Budapest, Wigner began his university career in chemistry at the insistence of his father, who wanted him to work in his tannery business. After one year at the Technical Institute in Budapest he transferred to the Technische Hochschule in Berlin where, alongside his chemistry work, Wigner studied physics and mathematics on his own. He attended the physics colloquium and witnessed first-hand the emerging understanding of quantum mechanics. During his third year in Berlin, Wigner began working at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in the suburb of Dahlem, where he met Michael Polanyi, a physical chemist who was also a native of Budapest. Polanyi agreed to be Wigner's thesis advisor for a doctoral dissertation in chemical engineering that contained the first theory of rates of disassociation and association of molecules. After receiving his doctoral degree in 1925, the twenty-two-year-old Wigner dutifully returned home to Budapest to help his father at the tannery. After just one year, however, he accepted an assistantship set up by Polanyi with the x-ray crystallographer Karl Weissenberg at the University of Berlin. Recognizing Wigner's fine command of mathematics, Weissenberg assigned him a problem that required an exploration of the elementary aspects of group theory. After a few months, Weissenberg arranged for Wigner to work with Richard Becker, who had recently been given a chair at the university in theoretical physics. In 1927 Becker, in turn, suggested that Wigner work with David Hilbert at the University of Göttingen. But Hilbert became ill and retreated from professional work, leaving Wigner without formal responsibilities. Wigner's time in Göttingen was hardly unproductive, however ... at the suggestion of fellow Hungarian Leo Szilard, Wigner began a book, Group Theory and Its Application to Quantum Mechanics (1931), which became famous. By the time he left Göttingen, Wigner had firmly launched a career in science. Not only had he begun the book that would make his name, he had started the line of research that would later lead to his award of the Nobel Prize. Together five offprints from Zeitschrift für Physik 40 Bd., 7 Heft (1926); 40 Bd., 11/12 Heft (1927); 47 Bd., 3/4 Heft (1928); 49 Bd., 1/2 Heft (1928); 51 Bd., 11/12 Heft (1928). 8vo (229 x 155 mm), pp. 492-500; 883-892; 203-220; 73-94; 844-858.
