James Joyce
France: Egoist Press, 1925. Hold to the now, the here, through which all future plunges to the past. Here we offer the first edition, stated 7th printing, of the classic modernist novel, Ulysses, by James Joyce, published by Shakespeare and Company, Paris, for Egoist Press, London, in 1925. One of the books targeted by the Nazi book burnings, Ulysses is rated the best novel ever written by Modern Library. These were all published in a large format, but in acidic paperback binding, so that they are found either in a brittle original binding, or, as is the case here, they were at some time rebound in hardback. This particular treatment has applied the paper from the original binding atop the cloth, so that the book is well protected and easy to read, but the appearance of the original form is also preserved. Boards are worn, mostly at the head and foot of the spine, and original paper cover is soiled (please see pics.) Uninscribed endpapers are worn at gutters. Binding is very tight and square. Age toning at edges of text pages is typical for this title. Text is very clean, bright, and crisp. 736 pages, including several pages of errata. The book measures approx. 8.75 x 6.75-inches. This will make a wonderful centerpiece to your firsts collection or a very generous and thoughtful gift. ** Have you seen all the amazing first and rare editions of iconic books we offer? SEGUY, E A
Paris: Tolmer editeur, 1925. Iridescent pochoir printmaking A rare and astonishingly beautiful French art nouveau design album based on the butterflies of the world, featuring species from China, India and Asia. Eugene Alain Séguy (1889-1985) was a leading French designer of the art nouveau and art deco periods who produced 11 stunning design portfolios with a range of styles and inspirations. Séguy had an acute interest in scientific study of insects, and utilised this knowledge to produce two albums on this theme including this brilliant set of butterfly designs. For Séguy, insects were both beautiful objects and wondrous mechanical creations, and formed a rich subject matter for illustration and more abstract design possibilities. In Papillons he accomplished both goals. The album features remarkably detailed and accurate depictions of butterflies from across the globe in addition to breathtaking art nouveau abstract designs derived from their shimmering patterns. The pochoir stencil printmaking process was ideally suited to this task, capturing the subtlety and iridescence of light playing across the butterfly wings. Complete collection of 20 pochoir plates measuring 448 x 323 mm., with title-page, introductory note and list of plates housed in the original folding case with cloth ties, pochoir design to the front board, a superior copy.

Shipping is $4.39 in the USA. No international shipping! Combined shipping is always no extra charge. Raphaelson, Samson. THE JAZZ SINGER. New York: Brentano's, 1925. FIRST EDITION. A bright, FINE copy in the rare original publisher's dust jacket which is VERY GOOD (slightly chipped at the top of the spine and the back panel, a little dust-soiled). A PRESENTATION COPY from the author to New York City's DRAMATISTS GUILD. A superb association: "For Dramatist's Guild/Samson Raphaelson/1977 (51 years later)." The Jazz Singer, filmed by Warner Brothers in 1927, was the first feature-length motion picture with synchronized dialogue sequences; it brought about the rise of the "talkies" and the decline of the silent film era. Using the Vitaphone sound-on-disc system, star Al Jolson sang a half-dozen songs making this the first true musical film as we think of it today. But its not just a major milestone in film history, Samson Raphaelson's story is a powerful one; Jakie Rabinowitz who goes against the traditions of his orthodox Jewish family by singing popular songs in a beer hall, is castigated by his synagogue cantor father and driven from home. Fast forward, Jakie becomes Jack Robin, a brilliant but tormented jazz singer. This story of an entertainer's hopes and dreams for a career coming into conflict with his culture and his faith is a classic and serves as the prototype for an entire … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pannill, Henry C.
Oklahoma City: 1925. Typewritten manuscript (200 x 270 mm), 290 pp. printed on rectos only, bound in green cloth covered boards, backstrip plain, upper board titled in gilt "An Elk's Diary / Pannill", rear board blindstamped (upside down) "Behind the Horns / Henry Clay Pannill". Manuscript a little yelllowed but entirely legible and well preserved with all insertions and corrections secured in the original sturdy custom binding. § Unpublished typewritten manuscript, with many revisions, additions, deletions, and manuscript annotations, written by Henry C. Pannill an itinerant paralyzed man who travelled over 40,000 miles around the country between 1910 and 1925 seeking charity from Elk's lodges and advocating for other disabled people. An autobiographical account of an extraordinary journey, the manuscript is also intended as an exposé of the hypocrisy and internal corruption of charitable organizations (specifically the Elks) and as a general lesson to the reader on the suffering and daily indignities faced by a physically disabled person in America at that time. Henry Pannill appears to have been born around 1887 in Oklahoma. In 1910 he made a misjudged dive from a second story balcony into a hotel swimming pool and was paralyzed from the neck down. As an Elk in good standing he applied to his home town lodge of Lawton, Oklahoma, for charity. After some initial kindness, the local lodge, unable or unwilling to support him further, sent him on to the lodge in Galveston, TX, a pattern that was to be repeated for the next 15 years, sending Pannill and his nurse along the len … [Click Below for Full Description]

The appendices also note the various stages in the development of the British military system of training. A very important work and one that has become uncommon. WHITE, E.B
[The New Yorker], [1925]. Hard Cover. Good / No dust jacket. Item #033503 White's first book, a collection of humorous advertisements he wrote anonymously for The New Yorker, showing how subscribing to the magazine could offset one's social shortcomings and enhance one's prestige. Short vignettes, each illustrated with photographs White took of a couple, "Sterling and Flora Finny," embodied by mannequins from Wanamaker's department store. Inscribed by White (as "Sterling Finny") to himself: "To E.B. White/ without whose skill with a camera, untiring desire to make money, and patience, I and Flora would still be in Wanamaker's where we belong. - Sterling Finny." Taped to the verso of the title page is a typed note signed "EBW" and dated August 27, 1967, giving the background on the Finny advertisements and on the book, which was put together by the advertising department as a good-will offering to agents and customers, without Harold Ross's knowledge, and with a prologue and epilogue by John Hanrahan (credited in the book only in pencil, by White). A very scarce publication: OCLC locates only seven copies, none of them signed by the author let alone with a humorous inscription/commentary by him, and an explanation of the book's history. We can find only one appearance at auction listed in the online records we reviewed. A thin, hardbound volume: text block separated from the front board, thus a good copy, now housed in a custom clamshell case. The best possible copy of the scarce first book by the great New Yorker essayist and the author of the classic, Charlotte's Web, amon … [Click Below for Full Description]
