Kerzhentsev, P.
Moscow: [Molodaya gvardiya], 1925. 96pp.: tables. 20.3x14.3 sm. In original illustrated publisher's wrappers by Ruvim Mazel (1890-1967). In good condition. Loss of the small fragment at the lower right corner of the front wrapper, tears of the spine, foxing. Second enlarged edition. First edition published in 1923. Scarce. Wrapper design by the Soviet artist and graduate of the Munich Academy of Art, Ruvim Mazel (1890-1967). Dedicated to the problem of time-management, this book was written by Platon Kerzhentsev (1881-1940), one of Proletkult's leading theoreticians and the founder of the mass social organization "The League of Time" (later The League of Scientific Organization of Labour). The World War I, revolution and civil war had caused a dramatic drop in industrial production in Russia. The situation worsened even further when many workers returned to their native villages in order to participate in the redistribution of the large estates (the general number of workers in industries declined from 2.6 million in 1917 to 1.1 million in 1920). A drastic fall in labor productivity was accompanied by the reduced labor-discipline flowing from the unbearable living conditions during the civil war. With the industrialization underway, the labor effectiveness became a major concern for the authorities. Against this background, the early 1920s witnessed a proliferation of efficiency-worshipping organizations, among which "The League of Time" (alongside CIT) held particular place. The organization was founded at the initiative of Platon Kerzhentsev in July 1923 and was intended … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Western Photographica]. [Arizona]
[Primarily Arizona and New Mexico], 1925. Very good plus.. 277 photographs on forty-nine leaves, most measuring 2.75 x 4.5 inches. With some additional postcards and ephemera. Oblong octavo album. Original black cloth, string-tied, cover gilt. Light wear to binding, contemporary ownership inscription inside front cover. Many images captioned. Photographs clean and crisp. A wonderful vernacular photograph album assembled by Robert Lindsley of Wichita, Kansas, documenting a road trip taken across the Southwest to the Grand Canyon and the Painted Desert in Arizona. A note in the back indicates he left Wichita on July 19, 1925 and returned September 5th, having traveled 3,685 miles. The first two leaves contain images of stops made in Texas and New Mexico, while the remainder of the album is comprised of images of Arizona and New Mexico. These begin with the Cochise Mining Camp and the Keystone Mine. There follow images of Tucson, the Arizona State Prison at Florence, the Roosevelt Dam, Flagstaff, and scenes of camping in the countryside en route to the Grand Canyon. After a series of photographs in and around the Canyon, the party moved to Tuba City, in Navajo country, and the next few leaves contain images of Navajo and Hopi Indians and their dwellings and environs. Two striking images show a Native American woman seated on the ground outside a house with three small children, a drop spindle at her side and a coffee cup by her knee. In the second of these she looks piercingly into the camera, perhaps having just noticed the photographer. Another is labeled as "Navaj … [Click Below for Full Description]

Modern audiences are well acquainted with Gaston Leroux's infamous Phantom of the Opera, the tale of Erik, a horrifically disfigured man who lives in the underground beneath the Paris Opera House, where his creative genius mingles - and festers - with madness. First published in 1910, the Phantom's obsessive and consuming love for the beautiful young chorus girl Christine has captivated readers, film goers and musical theater fanatics for over 100 years. The Phantom of the Opera has become the source for numerous adaptations, including the 1925 film starring Lon Chaney and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Tony Award-winning musical. A series of two lectures given in 1924 by Dr. Ryszard Ganszyniec (1888-1958), a renown Polish cultural historian and philologist against Poland's attempt to legally restrict the number of Jewish students in its schools. Indeed, in 1923, Poland tried to introduce an infamous numerus clausus law, but faced objections from the League of Nations. The numerus clausus attempt by the Polish government was a clear manifestation of the widespread anti-Semitism which had bedevilled Poland during the interwar years. Riecke, Erhard
Gustav Fischer, 1925. First edition. 4to, 40 pp. + 24 photographic plates, reproducing 94 photographs. Printed wraps. One of the most important early scholarly tattoo works, remarkable for the superb 94 photographs of tattooed subjects which make up the latter half of the work, which number as one of the most important early photographic records of the modern European tattoo. The text is distinguished for focusing specifically on the symbolism of the modern European tattoo, especially those with a sexual or criminal context. Rudolf Erhard Riecke (1869-1939) was a dermatologist and the first director of the influential department of skin and venereal diseases at the University of Gottingen. Spine lightly creased, with a couple of closed tears beginning at the head and foot of spine, and some additional closed nicks and a small chip to margins, else a bright and sound example. The book was poorly bound and fragile, especially given the weight of the photographic plates, and this copy is in far better condition than usually found. [Attributes: First Edition]

A.A. Milne
fine book. Alan Alexander Milne (1925) 'When We Were Very Young', UK first deluxe edition, bound in blue leather (just like the original trade edition which was published in blue cloth), published by Methuen. In addition, an original letter handwritten and signed by author A.A. Milne. This is an extremely rare edition and certainly the least common of the four leather bound Winnie-the-Pooh books issued in a few hundred copies. 'When We Were Very Young' was originally published in 1924 as a regular trade edition only. It was immediately successful and the first printing sold out in one day. The publisher Methuen then decided to issue a deluxe leather bound version in three colours: blue, red, and green. The paper stock of the seventh printing of the trade edition (March 1925) was used for that purpose. In 1926 when 'Winnie-the -Pooh' was published it was issued as a deluxe leather bound edition in three colours as well keeping that tradition for the remaing two Pooh books. Condition: a fine and abolutely beautiful copy. No previous owner's scribbles inside, the leather binding is crsip and clean like on the day of publication. No rubbing to the gilding. Page block edges gilded as called for. The original glassine warpper is present and without any chips or tears, now of course yellowed as over 90 years have passed since publication! The original box is near fine with no structural damage at all and a whiff of foxing and darkening as to be expected. The best condition on the marekt and extremely rare to find as the vast majority of deluxe copies are the second editions which … [Click Below for Full Description]

Luigi Bartolini (Cupramontana 1892 - Roma 1963)
Impressione eccellente, dai neri intensi. Ottimo stato di conservazione. Ampi margini oltre la battuta. Firma in lastra in basso a destra, in una porzione orizzontale bianca, "L. Bartolini". [Click Below for Full Description]
