Achille (Ferrara, 1890 - Appiano Gentile, 1972) FUNI
Milano: Hoepli, Arte Moderna Italiana , 1925. Brossura (wrappers). Molto Buono (Very Good). N. 4 (Serie A - Pittori n. 3). Nota biografica e bibliografia. 16mo (cm 17x12,5). pp. 20 + tavole. Molto Buono (Very Good). Titolo riportato a penna sul dorso (Title written in pen along spine). I ed. di 1000 copie numerate. I ed. of 1000 copies.

Oeuvre originale

Olsuf'ev, Iurii Aleksandrovich (1878-1938)
Moscow: self-published, 1925. Octavo (23 × 15 cm). Original paper wrappers; 23, [1] pp. Signed and inscribed by the author to V. Arsen'ev in the year of publication. Light wear to wrappers; else very good. Count Iurii A. Olsuf'ev (1878-1938) was a scholar of ancient Russian art and iconography, as well as a conservation specialist, who played a key role in saving ancient Russian religious art works and objects in the early Soviet period. He is perhaps best known for his work on the inventory of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, a large monastery complex seventy kilometers outside Moscow. After the October Revolution, the monastery was closed, though parts were designated as a museum, where Olsuf'ev continued his work of documenting, describing, and researching the many riches held by the lavra, such as the miniatures in the monastery library or various decorative and sacral objects. He was one of the founders of the science of icon restoration and played a leading role in the restoration of the famous "Trinity" icon by Andrei Rublev. Ultimately, much of the collection was stolen and sold, and the lavra was only returned to the Russian Orthodox Church after World War II. In 1939, Olsuf'ev himself fell victim to the Great Purge: he was arrested and shot for distributing anti-Soviet rumors. As early as 1925 he had first been accused of counter-revolutionary activities, and was temporarily imprisoned as well as the subject of a public campaign against him. Olsuf'ev descended from Count Vasilii Olsuf'ev (1796-1858), a veteran of the War of 1812 and close confidant of Alexander I … [Click Below for Full Description]

Potonniée, Georges
Paris: Publications Photographiques Paul Montel, 1925. First edition. 8vo., 319, [1] pp., 99 illustrations from photographs, drawings and charts in text. Printed wrappers which are moderately stained; bump to the lower corner at the spine. A near very good copy. Georges Potonniée, a French photo-historian, set out to correct the record concerning the discovery and early history of photography - before his HISTOIRE DE LA DÉCOUVERTE DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE, the contributions of the French were largely ignored in the existing literature; "l'histoire de la photographie est essentiellement française. The history of photography is predominantly French. It is a Frenchman, Niépce, who invented it; it is a Frenchman, Daguerre, who disclosed it). Potonniée was largely correct in his assessment of Niépce's importance, but he did err with his chronology, dating Niépce's first photograph from nature a full two years earlier than in actuality. His assessment of Talbot's early process as "unworkable" was clearly wrong. It was through his efforts that a statue of Niépce was erected at Saint-Loup-de-Varennes.

Balazs, Bela
Moscow; Leningrad: Gosizdat, 1925. 96 pp. 23x16 cm. In original constructivist wrappers designed by Boris Ender (1893-1960), Soviet avant-garde artist. Very good, small repairs of the front cover, loss of the spine and back cover (neatly replaced with paper of same color), small tears of the last page (repaired). First Russian translation. Translated from the German original Der sichtbare Mensch [i.e. Visible Man, or the Culture of Film], first published in 1924. Edited and with introduction by Adrian Piotrovsky (1898-1937), art director of Leningrad Film Studio. Supplemented with short review of Charlie Chaplin and Soviet cinema. The famous work by Bela Balazs (1884-1949), Hungarian-Jewish film critic and writer, probably the first major work on film theory. It had a big influence on such major Russian filmmakers as Vsevolod Pudovkin and Sergei Eisenstein, and were among the first studies to examine filmic syntax, grammar, and editorial structure. ''In this ninety-page treatise, Balázs stakes a claim for film as an art that may restore to modernity the lost expressive capacities of the visual body. Under such headings as 'Type and Physiognomy', 'The Play of Facial Expressions', 'The Close-Up' and 'The Face of Things', he presents a typology of expressive elements which together comprise the 'only shared universal language', the image-language of film''. Goethe, Johann Wolfgang; Illustrated by Harry Clarke; John Anster, translator from the German
New York: Dingwall Rock Limited, n.d. [1925]. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. Number 141 of 1000 copies printed for the United States, signed and numbered by Harry Clarke. There were also 1000 copies printed for England. Clarke (1889 - 1931), an Irish illustrator and stained glass artist, was heavily influenced by the Art Noveau and Art Deco movements. His bold, haunting illustrations reflect the styles of Beardsley and Dulac. This book is considered by many to be his most famous work; it was completed just a few years before his early death at age 42. Although Clarke is probably best known today for his mysterious and beautiful illustrations, he spent most of his life making stained glass and considered this craft to be his real career. To quote from Maria Popova's piece on "Brain Pickings Weekly" about this edition of Faust: "Harry Clarke's unmistakable aesthetic, which became a centerpiece of the Irish Arts and Crafts movement and which he had applied to Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination just a few years earlier, lends the Goethe masterpiece an additional dimension of haunting beauty - the kind that calls to mind Rilke's famous assertion that "beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are still just able to endure, and we are so awed because it serenely disdains to annihilate us." Bound in half white vellum with grey paper boards with gilt titling to spine. Vellum is somewhat soiled and spine is faded. Paper boards are discolored along edges with small black spot on front cover and corners are bumped. t.e.g. :pve;u decorated endpapers. Fir … [Click Below for Full Description]

[African-American Music]
Chicago, 1925. [24]pp. Large octavo. Original pink pictorial wrappers. Light dust soiling to wraps, light toning to text. Very good. An attractive songbook promoting the Williams' Jubilee Signers. The text contains piano and vocal scores for twenty-five works, including several classics and many less familiar tunes, as well as a history of the company since its founding in 1904 by Charles Williams. "They began their work in the west, where competition was not so keen, and have had the pleasure of singing in or under the auspices of nearly all the colleges, Y.M.C.A.'s and normal schools on the Pacific Coast. Their personnel has been practically the same throughout their history, and it has become a saying that a member must die before there is a vacancy among the 'Williams' Jubilee Singers." The wrappers of this work contain individual and groups portraits of the company's members.
