Fitzgerald, F Scott
New York: Scribners, 1925. First edition. Near Fine. First issue, with the four main issue points present: 1) pg. 60, line 16 "chatter" 2) pg. 119, line 22 "northern" 3) pg. 205, lines 9-10 "sick in tired" 4) pg. 211, lines 7-8 "Union Street station." Original publisher's cloth binding with gilt to spine and blind embossing to front board. Near Fine with minor foxing mostly at the early pages, top edge a bit dusty. In all, a pleasing and complete copy of this exceptional novel, which introduced the Lost Generation to the world. Fitzgerald's masterpiece and one of the great novels of the 20th century. Fitzgerald intended the novel to be a "consciously artistic achievement" and "something extraordinary and beautiful and simple, and intricately patterned." The book took Fitzgerald two years to write, and he worked on it under a variety of different titles, including Dinner at Trimalchio's and Under the Red, White and Blue. Unfortunately, when it was first released "The Great Gatsby" was neither a commercial nor a critical success. In fact, even though Fitzgerald received a great deal of praise from many literary lights of the period - including TS Eliot and Willa Cather -- the book did not achieve its current level of popularity and renown until after Fitzgerald's death, when it was distributed as a cheap paperback to GIs during World War II. The book has maintained its critical and commercial acclaim ever since, and has sold over 25 million copies. In 1960, the Times would call it "a classic of twentieth century American fiction." It has been adapted into numerous film ve … [Click Below for Full Description]

AJ REYNOLDS
(London): [ca. 1925?]. Condition: Very Good / SIGNED by Reynold's to front pastedown. Oblong 4to. cloth-bound album. 25 x 36cm. 103 original photographs, most (92) approx. 3.5 x 5.5" with remaining 7 x 9.5". Almost all images accompanied by typed detailed captions. SIGNED by Reynold's to front pastedown. Covers rather rubbed and wrinkled. Else sound and internally fine. Very good overall. An excellent annotated album of bull-fighting by a noted writer. Reynolds, a British journalist, was the author of three books of travel: FROM THE IVORY COAST TO THE CAMEROONS (1929), BY DESERT WAYS TO INDIAN SNOWS (1932), and AFRICAN PASSAGE (1935). Most images taken by Reynolds (with his stamp and penned comments to verso of many pictures). Subjects encompass the totality of Tauromaquia: from the selection of the bulls and the opening processions to the spectacle of the ring. Numerous action shots, including several gorings. The images primarily show the matadors and toreadors: Maera, Joselito, Cojida, and Nino de Palma - said to be the model for Pedro Romero in THE SUN ALSO RISES. With Reynolds' concise but informative typed captions, an engaging portrait of the culture and sport of bullfighting we suspect was a intended for eventual publication. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Milne
1925. Author: A.A. Milne Title: A Gallery of Children Edition: Signed, Limited Numbered Publisher: Stanley Paul & Co. Year: 1925 Condition: Very good Description; 105ps. White bevelled edge gilt decorative cloth. TEG. This edition is limited to five hundred copies numbered and signed by the author, this being #412. There are 12 color plates by Saida (H.Willebeek Le Mair) as well as a color illustration on the title page. The hinges are in excellent condition. There is a 1 1/2 inch splotch on the front panel to the upper left of the lettering. The spine is a bit darkened, and the pages are a bit wavy. A few of the plates have light foxing, otherwise the text block is bright and clean. The gilt on the panels and spine very bright. "Published just after 'When We Were Very Young' and before 'Winnie-the-Pooh', this book displays a transition in Milne's writing. Although the title would suggest it was written for children, it's probably more correct to say it was written for parents. The stories, while good, are not quite the exciting tales we might tell our children today, but have that distinct rhythm of Milne's that is very soothing and will aid in the children falling asleep. The joy is not so much in the stories themselves, but in the manner in which they are told. There are eleven stories in the book, and in several you can see the foundations for what would be the Pooh books.".

Milne, A.A. (Alan Alexander)
Methuen. A.A. Milne (1925) When We Were Very Young , UK first deluxe edition, bound in blue leather, published by Methuen. In addition, an original letter handwritten and signed by Milne. This is an extremely rare edition and the least common of the four leather bound Winnie-the-Pooh books issued in a few hundred copies. When We Were Very Young was originally published in 1924 as a regular trade edition only. It was immediately successful and the first printing sold out in one day. The publisher Methuen then decided to issue a deluxe leather bound version in three colours: blue, red, and green. The paper stock of the seventh printing of the trade edition (March 1925) was used for that purpose. In 1926 when Winnie-the -Pooh was published it was issued as a deluxe leather bound edition in three colours as well keeping that tradition for the remaing Pooh books as well. Condition: a fine and abolutely beautiful copy. No previous owner s scribbles inside, the leather binding is crsip and clean like on the day of publication. No rubbing to the gilding. Page block edges gilded as called for. The original glassine wrapper is present and without any chips or tears, now of course yellowed as over 90 years have passed. The original box is near fine with no structural damage at all, with a whiff of foxing and toning as to be expected. The best condition on the marekt and extremely rare to find as the vast majority of deluxe copies are the second editions which used the tenth printing paper stock. The letter: Single page autograph letter, signed as A.A.Milne , on stationary with letterh … [Click Below for Full Description]

Allen, Warner
John Hamilton, 1925. First Edition. Rare in or out of jacket. Pulp thriller in which a journalist and a detective battle the Expropriation Society, a criminal organization whose ostensible goal is the establishment of a worldwide communist utopia. The Society's seemingly impossible crimes are the results of an insane doctor's careful use of post-hypnotic suggestions on his unsuspecting patients. Macabre elements include a corrupt industrialist who psychologically tortures his young wife with his collection of snakes and a criminal mastermind who is determined to revenge himself on a romantic rival by injecting the young man with a strain of leprosy. While much of "The Devil That Slumbers" is routine commercial fare, the concluding chapter of the novel prefigures the lurid weird menace scenarios of the Shudder Pulps of the 1930s. Rear board mottled, else Very Good in a Very Good dust jacket. Jacket is chipped, with the "T" in "The" on the front panel missing, with a few short closed tears, light creasing, and a dampstain to the verso of the front panel. Vermutl. um 1925. 8°. Tafeln: 19,8 x 14,5 cm (Zeichnungen abzgl. --- Einige Tafeln leicht braunfleckig und vereinzelt leicht fingerfleckig. printed at S. Dominics Press, n.d., Ditchling Common, Hassocks, Sussex, 1925. Folio broadside approx. 15½" x 9", printed in red and black; small, neat professional repairs to breaks in the top edge; fine. Neatly matted to archival standards. Taylor describes the S. Dominic's posters "as among the most striking and original of his productions. But posters are of their nature ephemeral, and very few St. Dominic's Press posters have survived." Pepler himself wrote that "Were personal taste the deciding factor in the choice of work I think the Hand Printer would prefer poster printing to any other kind. It is full of variety and soon over . The poster should contain as little information as possible and that of the greatest moment. It should say one thing and supply only sufficient directions for getting it." Taylor & Sewell D-17, citing copies at the Gleeson Library in San Francisco and the Whittington Press. Not found in OCLC.

FITZGERALD, F. Scott
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1925. Octavo, 218pp. Meets all of the first issue points. A fine, lovely copy, beautifully rebound in full green morocco with gilt edges, borders, dentelles, and marbled endpapers. Raised bands with lovely gilt details to the compartments. An expertly rescued copy, with the original cloth cover and spine preserved at rear in the classic French style. A small marginal stain was professionally repaired at the top of a few leaves, barely noticeable. Arguably the best American novel of the 20th century, "Gatsby" is among the most sought after modern first editions. While a nice, clean copy in the publisher's dark green cloth can be obtained without much difficulty, an unrestored dust jacket will now set you back six figures. Here's a chance to own the real thing in a unique, elegant binding. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Woolf, Virginia
Hogarth Press, London, 1925. First edition of one of Woolf's best-known novels, one of only 2000 copies. Octavo, original orange cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with some light wear to the extremities. From the library of Virginia bibliophile and historian Christopher Clark Geest with his bookplate to the pastedown. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional example, scarce and desirable in the original dust jacket and in this condition. "In Mrs. Dalloway Woolf breaks decisively with the fictional conventions of the realistic novel. The technique is almost orchestral, introducing and then interweaving the strains of the different characters' thoughts, and finally engineering, through a subtle sequence of readjustments and realignments, a new and delicate harmony between them at the close of the book. Mrs. Dalloway thus initiated Woolf's sequence of radical experiments with literary form, embodying a striking combination of fluid sympathy and secret resistance. Through the novel's rapid transitions between apparently disconnected, but secretly related stories, Woolf was able to suggest the hazards of neatly pigeonholing human character according to social situation or gender" (Parker, 110-11). in 2005 it was included on Time's list of the 100 best English-language novels written since 1923. It was adapted to the 1997 film starring Vanessa Redgrave in the title role. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
