REXROTH, Kenneth
Rexroth's notes date the painting to 1925, and give the remark: "'Cubist' colors as of the period", perhaps an allusion to Braque's palette. A man and a woman in profile turned towards each other, the painting recalls Francis Picabia's work with its rounded, curvilinear forms. The colors of the painting are monochromatic shades of gray brightening to blue, and beige deepening into black. For the 1981 UCSB retrospective, Rexroth gave the painting the title "Abstraction: The Dignity of Jugglers Affected by Night". San Francisco Museum of Art label on the back, with title given as "Abstraction", dated "6/29/42". Wax, silica, and pure decorator colors on fiberboard, 13" wide x 18 1/2 high, ca. 1925, signed "K. Rex" at the bottom-edge. Loose in frame, some light wear at edges, a few light surface marks, some small areas of surface loss (approximately 1/2" x 1/2" and 1/3" x 1/3") at diagonally opposed corners, otherwise in very good condition. WHITEHEAD, Alfred North & RUSSELL, Bertrand
University Press, Cambridge, 1925. Errata leaf in each volume. Original blue cloth, exteriors faintly rubbed and spine of first volume a bit shaken, still an excellent set in an open-end box. Volumes 1 and 2 with Whitehead's presentation note on the first blank, "S.M.W. from A.N.W." and the bookplate of South-west Essex Technical College and School of Art Library. First edition of all three volumes, and extremely scarce. John Slater, in his introduction to Bertrand Russell (ABMR, Jan. 1988), notes that less than fifty copies now survive in private hands. The greatest single contribution to logic to appear in the two thousand years since Aristotle was the result of the collaboration of two great philosophers and mathematical logicians, Whitehead (1861-1947) and Russell (1872-1970). Inspired by Giuseppe Peano's and Gottlob Frege's invention of a new ideography for use in symbolic logic (which contradicted the Kantian doctrine of a separate philosophy of mathematics), the authors attempted to set up a still better system of logic on which to base mathematics. This effort reached its climax with the publication in 1910-13 of the three-volume Principia mathematica, now considered a historic masterpiece of mathematical architecture. FREUD, SIGMUND
Leipzig, Vien, Zurich: Internationaler Psychoanalytic Verlag, 1925-1934. Twelve volumes of Freud's collected works (in German); in all likelihood a mixed set bibliographically; all are in original cloth and in near fine condition, with the exception of a very good single volume with a faded spine and a small chip at the top of the spine. The first volume was presented in 1933 with warm birthday wishes to Dr. Heinz Hartmann; the inscription is in German, entirely in Freud's hand, and signed Sigm Freud. The final volume was not issued until 1934, but, given that Hartmann's birthday was towards the end of the year, this may have already been available to Freud, or was perhaps acquired shortly later by Hartmann. An exceptional association; the recipient was an acolyte and favored pupil of Freud, who also psychoanalyzed him.

Heisenberg, Werner WITH Bothe, Walther; Geiger, Hans WITH Slizard, Leo WITH Lanczos, Kornel [Cornelius]
Berlin: Julius Springer, 1925. FULL VOLUME 1st EDITION OF A NUMBER OF IMPORTANT WORKS, AMONG THEM, ONE BY HEISENBERG ON THE COMPLEX SPECTRA OF MANY-ELECTRON ATOMS. Details on other significant works in this volume follow beneath the Heisenberg discussion. In spring 1925, Heisenberg was convinced that what was needed was "a theory which abandoned the classical description of the electron orbits inside the atom and instead concerned itself with quantities that were accessible to observation" (RS Bio Memoirs, 220). On the heels of his work describing anomalous Zeeman effects and an early spring meeting in Copenhagen with Bohr, Kramers, and Pauli, Heisenberg received a letter from Pauli noting that while he [Pauli] still disagreed in principle with the Copenhagen radiation theory, he would probably come to terms with Heisenberg about the theory of complex structure" (Mehra, 200). Encouraged, Heisenberg began work on this paper, his third on quantum theory. In it, Heisenberg provides a complete discussion of the issues including the various models of many-electron atoms used in his data -- the standard atomic core-series electron model, Pauli's model (wherein the electron was assigned four quantum numbers), and a model proposed by Russel and Saunders (an atomic core-series electron model). Heisenberg begins "his treatment of complex spectra with the following hypothesis: 'If an electron and an atomic core interact… then the energy of this interaction possesses a reciprocal duplicity such that for given well-defined stationary states of the atomic core and the outer … [Click Below for Full Description]
