Biblical Text]; Gill, Eric (Illustrations
The Golden Cockerel Press, 1925. Gill, Eric. Limited Edition. Hardcover. No. 86 of 750 copies, quarto size, 45 pp. Near fine. Eric Gill (1882-1940), English sculptor and printmaker, perhaps best known for his wood engravings, illustrated numerous fine press books; he designed and printed many wood engravings for The Golden Cockerel Press, and his work is characterised by sensual line work and elegent characters with a deep spirituality. This publication by The Golden Cockerel Press takes the text from the biblical text "The Song of Songs" and presents it with characters forming the story of the poetic passages; the text is divided into acts and scenes, as would an opera, with some initial capital letters printed in red throughout. Eric Gill's wood engravings portray the characters in a beautiful and intimate light, interweaved with the text, to bring a more modern light to the biblical poetry. As he himself wrote in "Art & Love", "Therefore the love-song and the love-picture which take human love as the symbol of Divine Love are everywhere recurrent and such love, so taken, is still rightly the theme of themes for poets and picture-makers". ___DESCRIPTION: Full white buckram, gilt lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edges uncut, title page with red wood engraving "Holy Spirit as Dove" (P315) by Eric Gill, twenty wood engravings by Eric Gill throughout, some initial capitals in red, colophon with printer's device in black; Caslon O.F. type, Batchelor handmade paper, quarto size (10.25" by 7.75"), pagination: [1-8] 9-42 [43-44] [1 colophon], one of 750 copies, this numbe … [Click Below for Full Description]

If you need a particular title, let me know as I may have one available. The Knave of Hearts, by Louise Saunders with illustrations by Maxfield Parrish is one of the most magical children's books ever created. The 1925 hardcover edition is especially rare in this condition. The book measures 11 3/4" X 14". The cover is strong with a minor one-inch scratch going through the spoon on the far right. There are a few tiny flea bites that are barely notieable. I mention these to be as accurate as possible. The corners are firm and not bumped. The color is outstanding with no fading. The front end papers of Parrish's Romance, is pristine but for a dog ear in the lower right. The printing is bright with perfect resolution. The rear end papers are fine. The binding between the copyright and title pages is just pulling, but this is the only place where the binding has any issues. The interior is very fine with no problems. **AUTOGRAPHED HANDWRITTEN LETTER SIGNED BY** ROBERT FROST IN APRIL, 1925 One sheet of white wove paper measuring approximately 5" by 7 1/2 inches. The letter concerns a reading that Frost gave at a women's and some books that the Poet had intended to distribute to the "girls." The letter begins: "My dear Miss Patton: Thanks for the pleasant time you gave me..." And on the back of the letter, it concludes: "With best wishes to you and Miss Jenny. Sincerely yours Robert Frost" In the lower left-hand corner on the back of the letter is written in pencil within parentheses: "(April, 1925 / Troy, N.Y.)" As shown in the picture above from the Russell Sage College Newspaper, The Quill, of April 22, 1915, Robert Frost gave a reading on April 13, 1925 atRussell Sage College, a private women's college founded in 1916 in Troy, New York to offer women the means of independence through a combination of a broad education in the liberal arts and preparation for specific professional careers. Miss Patton taught English and Literature at Russell Sage College and was among the college's original faculty in 1916. The "enclosed books" probably refer to a 4-page pamphlet entitled "Several Short Poems by Robert Frost" which was published by Henry Holt and Company for distribution at Robert Frost's lectures and readings [See Crane A8]; however, so many audience members asked Frost to sign their copies after his readings that the Poet soon discontinued the practice (or in this case, Frost just "forgot" to bring the books with him). The letter is written with the Poet's typical fountain-pen-and-bla … [Click Below for Full Description]

DARROW, Clarence
New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925 (1928). Third Edition. hardcover. A gorgeous copy, beautifully preserved, with the original dustwrapper which has a long, jagged but closed tear on the front panel that, under mylar, is not terribly offensive. Fine in a lovely dustwrapper. A novel that is really a thinly disguised autobiography of the great labor lawyer. INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper "To my good friend Geo/Bye- who managed to get/money for stuff that he would/have been glad to pay any/journalists or magazine editors/for printing them/With regard and affection of" and SIGNED "Clarence Darrow/June 6th 1929." Bye was a public relations and literary agent who worked for Darrow placing his articles as well as for other notable figures such as Eleanor Roosevelt. Darrow's sharp humor is readily apparent in his inscription.

Rosen, Phil (director); Josef von Sternberg (director, screenwriter); Joseph Farnham, Alice D.G. Miller (screenwriters ); Alden Brooks (novel); Myrna Loy, Renee Adoree (starring)
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], Culver City, CA, 1925. Draft script for the 1926 film. Based on the 1924 novel "Escape" by Alden Brooks. File copy rubber stamp to the front wrapper. Conrad Nagel and Renée Adoree star in this Silent film, today lost, originally directed by Josef von Sternberg. Midway into shooting Von Sternberg was fired by MGM and replaced by Phil Rosen. Rosen's many changes completely altered von Sternberg's version to the point that it was unrecognizable, and in a bizarre twist, MGM ultimately released both versions: the original one as "Exquisite Sinner" in 1926 (credited to both Von Sternberg and Rosen, running 60 minutes), and Rosen's extensively reworked version as "Heaven on Earth" in 1927 (runtime unknown). AFI Catalog notes that von Sternberg was replaced as director on January 17, 1926, which would place this script, dated in mid-December 1925, firmly within the time frame that von Sternberg was still the director. It is rumored that the Warner Brothers and Turner Entertainment archives hold a full print of this film, but as of 2014 no print has surfaced. Only a few images, promotional artwork and productions stills are currently known to exist. Set in France. Pale yellow titled wrappers, rubber-stamped copy No. 2 and production No. 1510, dated Dec 19, 1925, with credits for screenwriters Marion Orth and Harvey Gates. Title page integral with the first page of text, dated Dec. 12, 1925, with credits for screenwriters Orth and Gates. 128 leaves, with last page of text unnumbered. Spirit duplication. [Theater - Marionettes] Brunner, John D.K. and Vivian
1925. The papers and photographs of The Popcorn Theatre, a popular marionette show operated in Southern California for three decades by John D.K. Brunner (1925-93) and his wife Vivian (1926 -2005) along with their son Paris. This collection contains hundreds of original photographs, negatives, sketches for puppets, story concepts, and flyers for promoting shows. Also included is the iconic Popcorn Theatre wooden sign that was used at countless shows and two marionettes. The Brunner's, who were both raised in Southern California, married in 1947 and moved to Paris to study at the Sorbonne, where they often enjoyed watching puppet shows in the city's parks. When they returned to the Unites States, Vivian worked as a dress designer and John as an art director. Neither was happy, so they quit their jobs in 1962 and founded their touring marionette show The Popcorn Theatre. Their son Paris is seen in photographs assisting with puppets from an early age. The Popcorn Theatre was a staple at Southern California schools and performed regularly at area malls, parks, and community centers. Their versatile puppet cast included nearly 100 marionettes, all which were hand crafted by the couple. The most detailed puppets took as much as 600 hours to carve, paint, costume, and string. This archive includes two example marionettes. One is a felt green and blue character called a piñata with moving eyes and mouth that stands about 22 inches tall. The second is a 27-inch-tall grizzled old man. The strings and wooden controller are still attached to both; however the strings are badly tangled. … [Click Below for Full Description]

DARROW, Clarence
Boni & Liveright 1925 (1928), New York. A gorgeous copy, beautifully preserved, with the original dustwrapper which has a long, jagged but closed tear on the front panel that, under mylar, is not terribly offensive. Fine in a lovely dustwrapper [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Folio broadside approx. 15-1/2" x 9", printed in red and black; small, neat professional repairs to breaks in the top edge; fine. Neatly matted to archival standards. Taylor describes the S. Dominic's posters "as among the most striking and original of his productions. But posters are of their nature ephemeral, and very few St. Dominic's Press posters have survived." Pepler himself wrote that "Were personal taste the deciding factor in the choice of work I think the Hand Printer would prefer poster printing to any other kind. It is full of variety and soon over. .. The poster should contain as little information as possible and that of the greatest moment. It should say one thing and supply only sufficient directions for getting it." Taylor & Sewell D-17, citing copies at the Gleeson Library in San Francisco and the Whittington Press.
