Fitzgerald, F. Scott
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1925. First Edition. Near Fine. First issue, with the four main issue points present: 1) pg. 60, line 16 "chatter" 2) pg. 119, line 22 "northern" 3) pg. 205, lines 9-10 "sick in tired" 4) pg. 211, lines 7-8 "Union Street station." A Near Fine copy of the book with the spine a trifle cocked and slight rubbing to the boards. Spine gilt bright, internally an excellent copy. Fitzgerald's masterpiece and one of the great novels of the 20th century. Fitzgerald intended the novel to be a "consciously artistic achievement" and "something extraordinary and beautiful and simple, and intricately patterned." The book took Fitzgerald two years to write, and he worked on it under a variety of different titles, including Dinner at Trimalchio's and Under the Red, White and Blue. Unfortunately, when it was first released "The Great Gatsby" was neither a commercial nor a critical success. In fact, even though Fitzgerald received a great deal of praise from many literary lights of the period - including TS Eliot and Willa Cather -- the book did not achieve its current level of popularity and renown until after Fitzgerald's death, when it was distributed as a cheap paperback to GIs during World War II. The book has maintained its critical and commercial acclaim ever since, and has sold over 25 million copies. In 1960, the Times would call it "a classic of twentieth century American fiction." It has been adapted into numerous film versions, including a 1974 production starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, and with a script by Francis Ford Coppola. New York: G. W. Bromley & Co., 1925. 1925 edition. VERY GOOD+. Pages are near fine; lightly toned along the outside margins but otherwise clean and unmarked, the colors clear and bright. Pages are exceptionally fine no tears on pages but are fragile & must should be handled with care. Black cloth hardcover, red stamped title on front, is clean, moderately rubbed along edges and hinges. Cloth is frayed at spine ends, corners and several spots on the outside edges. Binding intact. All pages are firmly held. An extraordinarily detailed record of Manhattan in a series of 191 maps clearly showing the streets and outlines of each and every structure, every park, every railroad track including elevated railroads, water and sewer pipes and even fire hydrants, from Battery Park to 228th Street. Even more miraculously, details about the buildings are supplied through ingenious keys. Clearly noted are the number of stories, the depth of the building, presence of basements, of storefronts, and elevators. Even structure (brick, frame or iron covered) is indicated by coloring. Each of the plates has been meticulously hand-tinted in pinks, blues, yellows - and greens if a park is present. To help the user navigate the maps a 1-page Block Index (printed on the front pasted endpaper), 4-page Street Index and 5-Page Map Index (which include the "Explanations" or keys) are provided at the front of the book. The 191 plates follow. Book measures 16-3/4 x 11-3/4". An unusually well-preserved copy of this scarce, very desirable work. Additional photos available on request.. Hardcover. Twain, Mark
Harper & Brothers, Publishers, New York and London, 1925. Octavo, original cloth, frontispiece. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Rare in the original dust jacket. Mark Twain toured the British Empire in 1895, during which time he began concocting a travelogue about the experience that was published in 1897. Twain's narrative spans the globe, from Australia to Hawaii. Full of tall-tales and real-life criticisms of imperialist arrogance, it is written with Twain's characteristic wit and enthusiasm for a good, entertaining story. Following the Equator was Twain's last travel book, and "also his most serious. He relates the narrative as himself. The serious tone in some ways makes this is best travel narrative" (MacDonnell, 53). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures Of Robinson Crusoe; The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe; Serious Reflections During the Life and Suprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe
1925. The first Robinson Crusoe story was originally published anonymously in 1719 as the memoir of its protagonist, leading many to believe that it was a true chronicle. It tells the story of a castaway who spends thirty years on a tropical island, encountering cannibals, mutineers, and other perils. The two subsequent works continue his adventures, and were written following the first work's astonishing success. The Robinson Crusoe stories taken as a whole are one of the most popular fictional works in Western literature. By the end of the nineteenth century no book had more editions, spin-offs, or translations. There are estimated to have been more than 700 alternative verisions, including those for children. This edition was printed verbatim from copies of the first editions. The illustrations in the first two volumes (Adventures & Further Adventures) are by Stothard and are taken from the popular edition of 1790, again printed in facsimile. The title page from that edition is included in those two volumes. This edition was limited to 750 copies. Direct from the library of the late Hugh Selbourne MD (1906-1973) a noted book collector and diarist. Collated: complete CONDITION In a cloth binding with gilt detailing and lettering to the spines. Externally very smart indeed, with just very light shelf wear and bumping to the extremities. The edges are untrimmed and as a result a little dusty. Otherwise, however, generally clean and bright throughout and firmly bound. Overall Condition: Fine.

Boni and Liveright, New York, 1925. First edition of the first of Hemingway's books to be published in the United States, one of 1335 copies. Octavo, original cloth. In near fine condition with a touch of wear. An exceptional example. "No other writer stepped so suddenly into fame, or destroyed with such insouciance so many other writers or ways of writing or became such an immediate symbol of an age" (Connolly, The Modern Movement 50). This superb collection of stories presented a number of Hemingway's finest short pieces to the American public, including "Indian Camp," "The Battler," "The Three Day Blow," and both parts of "Big Two-Hearted River." In 1924 the Three Mountains Press in Paris published the similarly titled in our time in an edition of only 170 copies; that much-shorter work contained only the vignettes that are here called "Chapters" and interspersed among the 15 longer stories collected here for the first time. (Two of the 18 pieces that originally appeared in in our time were given titles and included here as full stories: "A Very Short Story" and "The Revolutionist."). Without rare original dust jacket. Daniel Defoe
London: Constable & Company, 1925.

Biblical Text
Waltham St. Lawrence: 1925. Condition: Near fine. No. 86 of 750 copies, quarto size, 45 pp. Eric Gill (1882-1940), English sculptor and printmaker, perhaps best known for his wood engravings, illustrated numerous fine press books; he designed and printed many wood engravings for The Golden Cockerel Press, and his work is characterised by sensual line work and elegent characters with a deep spirituality. This publication by The Golden Cockerel Press takes the text from the biblical text "The Song of Songs" and presents it with characters forming the story of the poetic passages; the text is divided into acts and scenes, as would an opera, with some initial capital letters printed in red throughout. Eric Gill's wood engravings portray the characters in a beautiful and intimate light, interweaved with the text, to bring a more modern light to the biblical poetry. As he himself wrote in "Art & Love", "Therefore the love-song and the love-picture which take human love as the symbol of Divine Love are everywhere recurrent and such love, so taken, is still rightly the theme of themes for poets and picture-makers". DESCRIPTION: Full white buckram, gilt lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edges uncut, title page with red wood engraving "Holy Spirit as Dove" (P315) by Eric Gill, twenty wood engravings by Eric Gill throughout, some initial capitals in red, colophon with printer's device in black; Caslon O.F. type, Batchelor handmade paper, quarto size (10.25" by 7.75"), pagination: [1-8] 9-42 [43-44] [1 colophon], one of 750 copies, this number 86. HILBERT, David.
Springer 1925/1926, Berlin. Very rare separate printing (WorldCat locates just two copies) of the most detailed exposition of Hilbert’s proposal for the foundation of classical mathematics, which became known as Hilbert’s Program. This paper further contains his attempted proof of the continuum hypothesis which led to the later work of Kurt Gödel and Paul Cohen. (Van Heijenoort: From Frege to Gödel, pp.367-92:) "Hilbert devoted to the foundations of mathematics a series of papers . Among all these contributions the 1925 paper [the offered item] stands out as the most comprehensive presentation of Hilbert’s ideas. It is the text of an address delivered in Münster on 4 June 1925 at a meeting organized by the Westphalian Mathematical Society to honor the memory of Weierstrass. In addition to the original version [ibid], two modified ones [were published in 1927 and 1930]. These, however, are abbreviated and besides other passages, omit entirely the section that deals with the continuum problem . The paper consists of two quite distinct parts. The first is a clear and forceful presentation of Hilbert’s ideas at the time on the foundations of mathematics. It starts by recalling how Weiserstrass eliminated references to ‘infinity’ in analysis (Hilbert could have mentioned Cauchy and D’Alembert) and reviews the role played by infinite in physics, set theory, and, when we deal with general propositions, logic. Leaning on the example of arithmetic, it introduces the distinction between finitary and ideal propositions, and it undertakes a simultaneous formalization of logic and arith … [Click Below for Full Description]
