Alexandr Blok
Prague: Nakladem Plamja. Condition: Very Good +. The 1925 1st Czech edition of Alexandr Blok's "Dvanact", widely considered "one of the first poetic responses to the October Revoluton of 1917". The Russian lyrical poet Alexandr Blok (1880-1921) centered his story on "The march of twelve Bolshevik soldiers (the Twelve Apostles) through the streets of Revolutionary Petrograd, with a fierce blizzard raging around them". The illustrations, highly-evocative woodcuts by Czech artist Vaclav Masek, powerfully complement Blok's verse-in-translation and the book's design --also by Masek-- captures the ominous mood of the "march" while achieving a deeply artistic, very stylized aesthetic. The poem, in its fragile pictorial wrappers, has held up well and is solid and clean and VG to VG+, with very light creasing along the panel edges. Quarto, 8 Masek woodblocks thruout (including the front cover), 47 pgs. of text. [Attributes: First Edition]

De ces belles promenades dans le parc, nous ne rapportions plus l'odeur du tabac fumé en cachette, mais le parfum des petites Américaines. Était-ce le géranium ou le réséda ?" Biblical Text
Waltham St. Lawrence: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1925. Condition: Near fine. No. 86 of 750 copies, quarto size, 45 pp. Eric Gill (1882-1940), English sculptor and printmaker, perhaps best known for his wood engravings, illustrated numerous fine press books; he designed and printed many wood engravings for The Golden Cockerel Press, and his work is characterised by sensual line work and elegent characters with a deep spirituality. This publication by The Golden Cockerel Press takes the text from the biblical text "The Song of Songs" and presents it with characters forming the story of the poetic passages; the text is divided into acts and scenes, as would an opera, with some initial capital letters printed in red throughout. Eric Gill's wood engravings portray the characters in a beautiful and intimate light, interweaved with the text, to bring a more modern light to the biblical poetry. As he himself wrote in "Art & Love", "Therefore the love-song and the love-picture which take human love as the symbol of Divine Love are everywhere recurrent and such love, so taken, is still rightly the theme of themes for poets and picture-makers". DESCRIPTION: Full white buckram, gilt lettering on the spine, fore- and bottom edges uncut, title page with red wood engraving "Holy Spirit as Dove" (P315) by Eric Gill, twenty wood engravings by Eric Gill throughout, some initial capitals in red, colophon with printer's device in black; Caslon O.F. type, Batchelor handmade paper, quarto size (10.25" by 7.75"), pagination: [1-8] 9-42 [43-44] [1 colophon], one of 750 copies, this number 86. New England Telephone
New Hampshire: New England Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1925. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. An archive of more than one hundred 7 1/2 x 11 inch photographs mounted on linen. Enclosed in boards secured by two screw posts. The front board is marked "Outside Plant - General Store and Garage Equipment - General Tools and Implements as Included in Inventory and Appraisal of Property New England Telephone and Telegraph Company State of New Hampshire as of April 1, 1925" The photographs are broken up into several categories. The first category tab has a stamp on it marked "Exhibit No 14 New England Tel & Tel Co, New Hampshire P.S.C. No D. 964 Witness GK Manson". Each section documents visually a portion of NE Telephone's inventory or property, mostly physical plant. A sample section is "Exchange Pole Lines Summary - Reproduction Cost - Fully Owned and Jointly Owned". Most photographs have typed explanations at bottom. Boards. A legal expert advised us that this archive was probably 'an exhibit compiled for use in a state rate case - a substantial portion of which consisted of proving that the physical plant included in the company's 'rate base' [on which it was allowed to earn its 'fair return'] was 'used and useful' and fairly valued.' In other words, NE Tel was attempting to prove that the rates it charged to customers were fair and appropriate based in part on the inventory and property documented here. A fascinating view into the state of the art in telephone/telegraph cabling and outside plant in 1925. Sections include Pole Lines, Exchange Poles, Toll Poles, Aerial … [Click Below for Full Description]
